OUTLOOK
Optimism continues to run high among third year
coach Ron Puhl and his staff as they feel the
Bloomsburg State Huskies have a real chance of
posting the first winning season since 1970.
Puhl and his able assistants have done much in the
past two years in beginning to turn around the football
fortunes of Bloomsburg. Two years ago the Huskies
were 2-7, missing a possible 5-4 season by only nine
points. Last year, in a 4-5 season, three games were
lost by seven points, one by 14, and another by one
point.
"We just have to be able to pull out those close
games and we'll be on our way," Puhl states. "We have
lost some key people from last year but, with our many
fine returnees and if our newcomers mature early, we
should be in good shape."
Among the main losses of personnel were two
All-Pennsylvania Conference eastern division first
team selections-tightend Ken Zipko, who graduated,
and sophomore offensive tackle Craig Meyer who,
along with his twin brother Chuck, defensive tackle on
PC second team, have taken jobs instead of returning
to school. "The loss of the Meyer twins was a blow to
us, and we'll be moving some personnel around to
compensate," Puhl said.
Three other second team PC selections have
graduated-wide receiver Tom Brennan, who was the
team's top receiver with seven catches for 221 yards;
defensive end Mark Collins; and linebacker Lou
Sannutti, captain and an Academic All-American.
Other key losses were offensive guards Barry Becker
and Bob Grantier, defensive end Chris Eurich, punter
Stan Kita, offensive tackle John Mondschein, wide
receiver/slot back Fred Pagani, offensive tackle Paul
Ruddy, linebacker Bruce Smith, wide receiver/slot
back Barry Staton, and linebacker Scott Vercoe.
Even with the loss of some of the above, the Huskies
should be in fairly good shape both offensively and
defensively. Among the returnees are five of the six top
defensive point getters for the Huskies including
linebackers Howie Gulick and Doug Pfautz, end Kurt
Pettis, and defensive backs Chris Betterly (first team
PC in the division) and Rob Keyser. Sophomores Sal
LaBue, Chuck Mueller, Jim Neary, Glen Folio, and Dan
Guzenski will be vying for down positions on defense.
Offensively, leading rusher Mike Morucci (100.6
yards per game average and a first team eastern
division PC selection) is back and Oil! sf ~vc,

will be pushed by sophomore Rick Knisely. A couple of
good offensive linemen to go with tackle Jim Knechtel,
guards Jim Linn (2nd team PC) and Bob Klacik, and
centers Bill Lund and Steve Long are needed to help
the running game.
Capable Ed Bugno will replace Brennan at wide
receiver and senior Chip Berezny appears to have the
edge at tightend. Puhl may make some changes in his
offense to utilize two other runningbacks, Joe Hepp
and Shaun Serfass, plus returning fullbacks Frank
Yanik and Dan Mccallum. The latter is also a kicker.
Incoming frosh will be led by 6-4, 240 lb. offensive
tackle Ray Distas.!2, a 1976 second team All-Stater

5-11, 200 lb. offensive guard, Lehighton, All-Conference, 1977.
If the pieces fall together this could be a great
turning point in Husky football. Bloomsburg opens its
ten-game schedule home against newcomer Ithaca
College on September 9.

HEAD COACH
RONALD PUHL is entering his
third year as head football coach
at Bloomsburg State College. It
was apparent to the entire college
community that his first two
seasons were a success despite
records of 2-7 and 4-5. The brand
of football displayed by the
Huskies won the overwhelming
approval of the fans.
Puhl has been able to transmit the same enthusiasm
to his football charges that proved so successful in his
previous nine years as head track coach and as
assistant football coach from 1960-70 under coaches
Russ Houk and Jerry Denstorff. His track teams from
1970-75 established an overall dual mark of 76 wins
against only eight losses.
He served as varsity track and field head coach for
several years at Phoenixville Area Senior High School.
A native of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Puhl was a
three letter winner in football, swimming, and track
and field while at Lock Haven State College from 1957
to 1961. He was named to the NAIA "Little
All-American Team" in 1960 for football and was a
F>ennsylvania State College Champion in the 200 yard

defensive player. He taught and coached at Berwick
High prior to completing his Master's degree at Delta
State.
•r

CARL HINKLE, who will be in

which he remained a year as the
heaa freshman coach. From 1970 to January 1977, he
was an assistant coach in charge of linebackers and
defensive linemen at the University of Toledo.

WILLIAM WOLFF brings a total of over 30 years of
football experience to the offensive backfield this fall.

Kutztown State College. He has a long coaching career
including three years at Pottsville Nativity, 17 years at

current pro stars Bob Tucker and Stan Kucharsky.
Lichtel has also coached seven years at
Mechanicsburg High School (Pa.) and spent two years
as a player/coach in the Seaboard League. After
