BLOOMSBURG
STATE
FOOTBALL
1977
OUTLOOK
Optimism is running high among second-year
Coach Ron Puhl and his Bloomsburg State
College Huskies for the 1977 football campaign.
Having brought Bloomsburg's respectability back
during 1976, Puhl's goal is for a much improved
win loss record. Last year's 2-7 record doesn't
reveal that a possible 5-4 season was missed by a
total of only nine points. Bloomsburg was in
almost every game right up to the final quarter.
Puhl has a wealth of returnees as only six were
lost from last year's squad including defensive
backs Mark Marchegiani and John McCauley,
guard Jim Blockus, linebacker Mike Kowalick,
wide receiver Barry O'Connell, and tightend Mike
Steigerwalt; all saw considerable action.
Bloomsburg had a 2-4 mark in the eastern
division of the Pennsylvania Conference.
Key returnees such as al I-conference players
including linebackers captain Lou Sannutti, Doug
Pfautz, and Howie Gulick, and tackle Walt Savitts
will keep the defense spark ignited and fuel will
be added by linebacker Bruce Smith, ends Mark
Collins and Kurt Pettis, tackle Tom Koons, along
with defensive backs Dave Reidenouer, Chris
Betterly, and Rob Keyser. Among the better
defensive newcomers will be tackles Jim Neary
and Chuck Meyer.
Also back will be quarterback Mike Canzler and
all-conference wide receiver Tom Brennan who
combined to lead the Huskies as the best passing
team in the division with 181.4 yards average per
game. Canzler averaged 10. 7 completions per
game and threw for nearly 1,500 yards in 1976.
The passing offense was eleventh in NCAA
Division Ill and led both the east and west
divisions of the Pennsylvania Conference.
Brennan averaged 4.0 catches per game. Other
quarterback prospects include Joe Perrotti and
Dale Crooks.
All-conference halfback Mike Morucci will be
called on again to do the major ball carrying and
will be complemented by fullbacks Dan
McCallum (also kicker) and Frank Yanik and
tailbacks Joe Hepp, Tony Williams, and
newcomer Rick Swider. Wide receivers Barry
Staton, Ed Bugno, and Fred Pagani, and tightend
Ken Zipko will enhance the Husky aerial attack.
Other strong contributors will be tightend and
punter Stan Kita, offensive guards Bob Klacik,
Jim Linn, and Bob Grantier, centers Bill Lund and
Steve Long, offensive tackles John Mondschein,
Paul Ruddy, and newcomers Jim Knechtel and
Craig Meyer.
There are numerous other fine candidates who
will be vying for action on this year's team.
Without a doubt, Puhl has more depth and talent
than has been seen on a Bloomsburg team in a
number of years. Puhl also has one of the most
talented gridiron coaching staffs that has been on
the BSC scene for some time, which will result in
a closer look at all the prospects.
KEY RETURNEES
LOU SANNUTTI never played high school football
but has developed into one of the premiere linebackers
in the conference . Named captain , Lou, 5'11", 185 lbs.,
is a fine leader both on and off the field. An
All-Conference selectee last year, he was second in
defensive points on the BSC team with 102. His goal is
to be an Academic All-American football player.
MIKE MORUCCI, another local talent from
Bloomsburg that went to Central H.S. Mike was a
starter for the Huskies last year and was the leading
ground gainer with 379 yards and four touchdowns. He
is 6'2" and 205 lbs. and has good moves and spring-like
quickness. Mike was another member of the BSC team
that was elected to the 1976 All-PC team at
runningback .
TOM BRENNAN, Lancaster, a 5'11", 185 lb. wide
receiver who gained All-PC honors in his sophomore
year. He averaged 4.0 catches per game to lead the
Huskies in the receiving department. He was also a
focal point in the Huskies' offense that averaged 181
yards per game in the air. Tom is majoring in Business
Administration.
WALT SAVITTS, Clarks Summit, is a 6'4", 230 lb.
defensive tackle who was on the 1976 All-PC team.
Walt is a senior majoring in Business and who has
been contacted by the Dallas Cowboys last year. Puhl
feels that Savitts is one of the more quicker and
stronger defensive linemen in the conference.
DOUG PFAUTZ, Elizabethtown, is a 5'11" junior
majoring in Business. Doug was chosen to an All-PC
team in 1976 at the outside linebacker position. The
coaches are again looking to Doug to keep up his fine
defensive potential for another good year. Doug is also
on the track team and has excellent mobility.
MIKE CANZLER, Waverly , NY, is a 6'3" sophomore
quarterback who showed the fans that the Huskies will
be in contention for the Eastern title this year. Canzler
threw for a total of 1,481 yards last year with a 10.6
passes completed per game average and a 47.8
completion percentage. Mike has two main
thoughts-to improve his statistics and help produce a
winning season.
HOWIE GULICK, Easton, is a 6'0", 200 lb. linebacker
who was a starter for the Huskies last season and
hopes to fill the same position again this year. Gulick
was fourth on the team in defensive points last year
with 18 unassisted tackles, but led in the assisted
tackles department with 57. A sophomore majoring in
Business, Gulick was on the all-conference team as a
freshman.
MARK COLLINS, Easton, is a 6'2", 200 lb. defensive
end who has been a starter for the past three years and
is one of the defensive strongholds for the Huskies.
Last year Collins totalled 78 defensive points and led
the team in fumble recoveries with three. He is a senior
majoring in Special Education.
BRUCE SMITH, Nanticoke, is a 6'1", 205 lb.
linebacker that ranked third on team defense last year
with 24 unassisted tackles, 48 assisted tackles, two
fumble recoveries, and one interception. As a
sophomore, Bruce was named an All-PC selection.
Puhl is counting on this Elementary Education major to
help plug any offensive holes of the opposition.
DANIEL McCALLUM, West Reading, is a 5'10", 200
lb. running back with exceptional quickness to hit the
open hole for yardage. Danny is also a member of the
track team and placed second in the shot put in the

1977 PSCAC finals. His strength is evident in his ability
to life over 400 oounds on a bench press . McCallum
won the honor of Most Versatile on the 1976 squad. He
was the leading point scorer on the team with 30 points
with 18 attributed to field goals on extra points.
DAVE REIDENOUER, Pottstown, is a 6'1", 195 lb.
defensive back . Dave started for the Huskies in the '76
season and had three interceptions for the year. Dave
had 22 unassisted tackles, the most for any defensive
back.
KEN ZIPKO, Dover, NJ, at 6'0", 195 lbs., is a
tightend after previously active as a running back and
quarterback. Ken's speed in getting off the ball quickly
complements his offensive blocking and receiving
ability . The senior, majoring in Business Administration-Information Processing, gained 137 yards on 62
rushes last year.
BARRY STATON, Woodbury, NJ, is a 5'11"
flankerback with 9.7 yard speed. Staton poses a double
threat to opposing defensives as he has the ability to
catch the ball like a splitend and shows good,
quick-cutting ability as a runningback. This running
ability was highlighted last season when Staton ran
back a 92 yard kickoff return against Wilkes College.
ED BUGNO, Scranton, is a 6'2", 185 lb. split-receiver
with the height to go into crowds and come down with
the ball. Ed only played in seven games last year but
amassed a total of 227 yards with 16 catches and two
touchdowns. Now in his sophomore year, Ed is
majoring in Education and hopes to be a contender for
all-state honors.
SCOTT VERCOE, Wayne, is a 200 lb. linebacker with
quickness and hard hitting ability. He was an all-state
baseball player and is currently majoring in Elementary
Education.
CRAIG MEYER, Far Hills, NJ, is a 6'0", 220 lb.
sophomore transfer from Midland College, just like his
twin brother Craig. Chuck is a defensive tackle who will
be seeing considerable action in the next three
seasons.
CHRIS EURICH, Schwenksville, is a 6'1", 200 lb.
defensive end. Chris saw a good amount of action last
year and, like the rest of his teammates this year, is
very optimistic about the season.
JOHN MONDSCHEIN, a 6'0", 230 lb. senior from
Coplay, is an offensive tackle that Puhl describes as "a
steady player with a winning attitude". John is a
previous letter winner and his strength and quickness
will help provide openings for the Husky running
backs .
FRANK YANIK, Scranton, is a transfer from
Southwest State University in Minnesota in his junior
year. Frank is 5'9" and 190 lbs. with excellent speed.
He will see action in the fullback position this year
along with others. Frank is another member of the
Husky squad that can bench press over 400 pounds.
STAN KITA, Manville, NJ, is a 200 lb.
tightend/punter. Stan handled the majority of the
punting for the Huskies last year and intends to
increase his average of 35.8 yards per punt this year.
Stan will also be sharing the tightend duties with
fellow New Jerseyian Ken Zipko.
ROBERT GRANTIER, Canton, is a 5'8" 220 lb. guard.
Bob is considered to be small physically but has the
toughness and desire of a big man. Puhl says that
Grantier is one of the players with the most enthusiasm
on the team.
BILL LUND, Devon, is a 19 year old sophomore vying
for the center position on the team. Bill is 6'0", 220 lbs.
and should be an asset to the offensive team.

graduate of BSC, Decarolis was a
Husky defensive back and place
kicker.
Richard Lichtel is in his second
year working with the quarterbacks. His name is easily
recognized as the former signal
caller who established many BSC
passing records in 1967 when he
teamed up with current pro stars
Bob Tucker and Stan Kucharsky.
Lichte! has also coached six
years at Mechanicsburg High
School (Pa.) and spent two years as a player/coach in
the Seaboard League. After graduating in 1968, Lichte!
played one year with the Baltimore Colts Farm Club in
the ACFL.
Paul G. Slocum, a native of
Massachusetts, was appointed
Physical Therapist at BSC in the
fall of 1972. He received a
Bachelor of Arts degree from
Dakota Wesleyan University, S.
Dakota, and was awarded his
Certificate of Physical Therapy
from the School of Allied Medical
Professions, University of Pennsylvania.

STATE
FOOTBALL
1977
OUTLOOK
Optimism is running high among second-year
Coach Ron Puhl and his Bloomsburg State
College Huskies for the 1977 football campaign.
Having brought Bloomsburg's respectability back
during 1976, Puhl's goal is for a much improved
win loss record. Last year's 2-7 record doesn't
reveal that a possible 5-4 season was missed by a
total of only nine points. Bloomsburg was in
almost every game right up to the final quarter.
Puhl has a wealth of returnees as only six were
lost from last year's squad including defensive
backs Mark Marchegiani and John McCauley,
guard Jim Blockus, linebacker Mike Kowalick,
wide receiver Barry O'Connell, and tightend Mike
Steigerwalt; all saw considerable action.
Bloomsburg had a 2-4 mark in the eastern
division of the Pennsylvania Conference.
Key returnees such as al I-conference players
including linebackers captain Lou Sannutti, Doug
Pfautz, and Howie Gulick, and tackle Walt Savitts
will keep the defense spark ignited and fuel will
be added by linebacker Bruce Smith, ends Mark
Collins and Kurt Pettis, tackle Tom Koons, along
with defensive backs Dave Reidenouer, Chris
Betterly, and Rob Keyser. Among the better
defensive newcomers will be tackles Jim Neary
and Chuck Meyer.
Also back will be quarterback Mike Canzler and
all-conference wide receiver Tom Brennan who
combined to lead the Huskies as the best passing
team in the division with 181.4 yards average per
game. Canzler averaged 10. 7 completions per
game and threw for nearly 1,500 yards in 1976.
The passing offense was eleventh in NCAA
Division Ill and led both the east and west
divisions of the Pennsylvania Conference.
Brennan averaged 4.0 catches per game. Other
quarterback prospects include Joe Perrotti and
Dale Crooks.
All-conference halfback Mike Morucci will be
called on again to do the major ball carrying and
will be complemented by fullbacks Dan
McCallum (also kicker) and Frank Yanik and
tailbacks Joe Hepp, Tony Williams, and
newcomer Rick Swider. Wide receivers Barry
Staton, Ed Bugno, and Fred Pagani, and tightend
Ken Zipko will enhance the Husky aerial attack.
Other strong contributors will be tightend and
punter Stan Kita, offensive guards Bob Klacik,
Jim Linn, and Bob Grantier, centers Bill Lund and
Steve Long, offensive tackles John Mondschein,
Paul Ruddy, and newcomers Jim Knechtel and
Craig Meyer.
There are numerous other fine candidates who
will be vying for action on this year's team.
Without a doubt, Puhl has more depth and talent
than has been seen on a Bloomsburg team in a
number of years. Puhl also has one of the most
talented gridiron coaching staffs that has been on
the BSC scene for some time, which will result in
a closer look at all the prospects.
