football. A native of Alabama, he also
received his Master of Arts degree from
the University of Alabama.
In addition to playing football at his
Alma Mater, he was a member of the
varsity baseball squad for three years ,
and played freshman basketball. Following his college career , he was a
successful player-coach of a semi-pro

Alabama, where he also served as head
basketball coach, assistant football

also has served as head baseball coach
of the Huskies since the 1969 season.
Defensive Line - CARL HINKLE joined
the Health and Physical Education
Department in 1971 as freshman football
coach and assistant track coach.
After being an outstanding high
school football player in his native town
of Berwick, Pennsylvania, he matriculated at Montana State University where

An outstanding athlete at Shippensburg State, he excelled in both baseball
and football for the Red Raiders. He later

track during his teaching experience at
Logan Area Junior High School in
Altoona; Nativity B.V.M. High School in
Pottsville; Valley Forge Military; and the
Greencastle-Antrim High School in
Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
Defensive Backs JOE DeMELFI, a
former grid standout, is a welcome
addition to this year's staff. In his native
town of Berwick, Pennsylvania, DeMelfi
was a member of the 1960 Eastern Conference championship Bulldog high
school team where he was a center and
linebacker. Named all-state on both the
AP and UPI selections, he was voted the
most valuable player in the 1961 big "33"
game.
He matriculated at University of Tennessee, playing football for two years
before transferring to Delta State where
he co-captained the Statesmen for two
years and was the team's most valuable
defensive player. He taught and coached
at Berwick High for three and one half
years before completing his Master of
Education degree at Delta State where he
assisted with the football program.

(Continued on page 11)

CAPTAINS
CHARLES BENDER - 5'7'', 155 lbs.,
defensive back - one of the smallest
men on the squad but pound for pound is
one of the hardest hitting players; named
to the second defensive team of the
eastern division of the Pennsylvania
Conference in 1972 and 1973; as the
number one defensive player for the
Huskies last year, he collected 171 points
on 41 assisted tackles, 48 unassisted
tackles, 2 sacks, 7 passes broken up, ·3
interceptions, and 1 fumble recovery;
should be up for Pennsylvania Conference honors again.
GERALD HOBAN - 5'9", 180 lbs., wide
receiver - saw limited action last year as
number three quarterback; showed real
potential as a wide receiver in this year's
spring drills and should give the Huskies
more flexibility on offense with a deep
pass threat; on rare occasions he could
also be utilized as a passer.
6'3", 225 lbs.,
GENE REJENT
defensive linesman - last year was sixth
on the team in defensive points with 90
as defensive end; had 44 assisted
tackles, 21 unassisted tackles, 7 sacks, 2
passes broken up, and 1 blocked kick;
the combination defensi~e leadership of
Rejent and Bender should give SSC one
of its better years on defense.

SEASON'S OUTLOOK
Coach Bill Sproule has 24 lettermen returning,
along with some 30 other candidates, from which to
mold his 1974 team.
Lost from last year's squad are 13 starters and
three other seniors that saw considerable action.
Included in the loss of players is the entire starting
backfield. Sproule and hi~ assistants plan on a
number of offensive changes, including a muchimproved passing game. Returning quarterback
Stan Gurecki, will be challenged for the number one
signal calling position by Ken Haynie and Gene
Markoski.
The BSC defensive unit came on strong towards
the end of the season last year, and Sproule feels
that continued improvement is needed on defense in
order for the Huskies to win consistently. Fortunately, many of the young players picked up
valuable experience last year. Two main problem
areas will be the interior offensive line and finding a
big, tough fullback to replace George Gruber and
John James. Two fine wide receivers, Dwight
Hunsberger and converted qu~rterback Gerald
Hoban , will help make the deep pass a threat.
Other outstanding performers should be Charles
Bender, defensive back, Linc Welles, defensive back
and punter, Dave Kelley, offensive tackle, and Gene
Rejent, defensive end. Tri-captains are Bender,
Hoban, and Rejent.
Sproule states, "We have a lot of hard work to
do, but we are going to surprise a lot of people. Our
players have a great competitive nature, and we have
better depth in most positions, so we're looking
forward to a good year."
