HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
WILLIAM SPROULE joined the Health
and Physical Education Department at BSC
in August, 1969, and for the past two seasons
served as assistant football coach in charge of
the offensive line and assistant wrestling
coach.
Sproule, a native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, was named acting head coach for the
1971-72 academic year during the latter
part of June. He played his college football
with the 1959 and 1960 Syracuse University
teams that played in theOrange Bowl and Cotton Bowl respectively. His Master of Science degree in physical education was received
teams that played in the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl respectively. His Master of Science degree in physical education was received
at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N .Y.
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg he was a member of the
faculty at the school district of Waterville, N. Y ., where he was
head football coach, as well as track and baseball coach, and a
teacher of physical education and driver education. Following his
graduation from Syracuse, he served for a year with the U.S.
Army and while stationed at Fort Dix, was game captain and
Director of the Post Football Clinic.

ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE DEPARTMENT
OF HEAL TH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND
ATHLETICS
DR. STEPHEN N. BRESETT, Associate
Professor of Health and Physical Education,
was appointed Acting Chairman of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and
Athletics at BSC in early September.
As Acting Chairman, Dr. Bresett is
responsible for the administration and supervision of the total Physical Education and
Athletic program at the College, including
varsity athletics, and will function until such
time as the official campus Search and Screening Committee
recommends to appropriate officials candidates for permanent
appointment.
A member of the faculty since 1969, Bresett received his
bachelor's degree and doctorate from Springfield College in
Massachusetts, an institution well-known for its programs in athletics and physical education. He received his master's degree from
Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Bresett's previous teaching and coaching experiences include
positions as Supervisor of Health, Physical Education, and
Recreation for the Ridgewood Public Schools in New Jersey;
Physical Education Instructor, Assistant Freshman Football
Coach, and Head Freshman Baseball Coach at Springfield College,
and Director of Athletics, Head Baseball and Football Coach at
South Brunswick High School, Monmouth, N. J. He has also
served as President of the New Jersey Athletic Directors
Association.

Season's Outlook
Bill Sproule, in his initial year at the helm of
the Huskies, has had to find a number of key replacements on both the offensive and defensive units
for players lost through graduation. Last year the
Huskies posted a 5-3 record under coach Jerry
Denstorff.
Following an analyzation of spring and preseason sessions, Sproule stated, "The strong point of
our team is the running game." Backing up this
statement is 6'2", 230 lb. senior tailback Bob
Warner, who received a number of honors in 1970
for totalling 801 yards inl59 rushes for an average of
5.3 yards per carry and 7 touchdowns. He also
caught 11 passes for another 161 yards.
Major renovations have been necessary for
Sproule on defense and at the quarterback slot. Last
year's leading linebacker Ken Klock is back in that
position with Dan Greenland replacing John Cox as
the other linebacker; the latter has been moved to
middle guard. Tom Baltuskonis returns at defensive
end with either Dave Pruett or Dan Collins, both
sophomores, at the other terminal. Filling out the
defensive line at tackles should be lettermen Henry
Johns and Glen DeWire.
Galen Troup is the only starter returning in the
defensive backfield. Punter Dan Stellfox and Bill
Tierney appear to be the twin safeties. Working
opposite Troup at halfback will be Steve Shiffert.
6'0" 190 lb. Bob Beiter has the inside track
at quarterback. The number one backup signal caller
should be Joe Geiger with Jim Hipple and Jim
Henning in reserve. ·Operating in the backfield with
Beiter and Warner are George Gruber at fullback and
fleetfooted Len House at flanker.
Tackle Rich Walton is the mainstay returning
from last year's ·offensive line with Rick Pierson at
the other tackle. Chris Sweet, who wasn't eligible
last year, has good promise at tight end along with
veteran Jeff White. Joe Courter will probably be at
split end. The balance of the offensive line will be
Larry Donovan and John Carroll at guards and
Gerry Whitcoski at center.
Junior Neil Oberholtzer, who is perhaps the
best place kicker in Husky history, will be available
for point after TD and field goal kicking.
Oberholtzer, coupled with Stellfox, should give
Bloomsburg the best 1-2 kicking combination in the
Pennsylvania Conference.
Of the 22 players designated for the two
starting units, 4 are seniors, 12 are juniors, and 6 are
sophomores. Since only half are lettermen, early
games are vital to Sproule and his staff in evaluating
future starting units and depth of positions.

CROSS COUNTRY
OUTLOOK 1971
With the top seven runners returning from last year's squad,
the 1971 edition of the BSC cross country team should have as
bright a future as the outstanding teams of the past two years
which posted 11-1 and 10-1 records respectively. These have been
the best CC records in the history of the college.
Coach Noble indicates his top two runners of the past two
seasons, Tim Waechter and Terry Lee, should continue to pace
the Huskies. Strong support is expected from Paul Pellitier and
Larry Horwitz, as well as Mike Hipple and Charles Graham.
Freshman Don Nauss and Bob Faux may work their way into top
positions.
The only runner lost from last year's team is Dave Kelter,
who graduated. In addition to Pellitier, other seniors on this
year's squad are Rod Dewing and Larry Strohl, last year's
captain.
Although it will be difficult to improve on the records of the
past two years, Noble is hoping to at least equal the performances.
The strongest competition is expected to be provided by Millersville, the only team to defeat BSC last year. Other top
competitio; will come from Lock Haven, Bucknell, and
Susquehanna.

HEAD COACH

r.

'9

DR. CLYDE NOBLE took over the
helm of tt,e BSC cross country team just
prior to the start of the 1968 season and
posted a 3-5 record. For the past two
years, his teams have established the
best cross country records in the history
of the college (11-1 and 10-1).
A native of Rockford, Illinois,
Noble received his Bachelor of Arts
degree from Grinnell College, Grinnell,
Iowa, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of
Hawaii. He has taken additional graduate studies at Carnegie
Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh.
In high school Noble earned four letters in track, three in
basketball, and two in football. He was also a member of the track
team at Grinnell College.
Noble's interest in all sports and .his knowledge of running
provides the Huskies with a definite asset to make it the third
winning season in a row.

ASSISTANT COACHES
Defensive Line - CLARK BOLER, a member of the University of
Alabama's 1961 National Championship Football Team, is in his
fourth year as defensive line coach. A native of Alabama, he also
received his Master of Arts degree from the University of
Alabama.
In addition to playing football at his Alma Mater, he was a
member of the varsity baseball squad for three years, and played
freshman basketball. Following his college career, he was a successful player-coach of a semi-pro basketball team in Alabama. He
previously taught at Gadsden High School in Alabama, where he
also served as head basketball coach, assistant football coach, and
assistant baseball coach. He is in his fourth year of football at
BSC and has served as head baseball coach of the Huskies since
the 1968 season.

Defensive Backfield - CECIL TURBERVILLE is in his fifth year
as a member of the BSC coaching staff. Last year he served as
freshman coach and previously directed the offensive line and had
the responsibility of head trainer.
A member of the Physical Education Department since
January 1966, he received both his Bachelor of Science and his
Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in his native
state. Prior to coming to Bloomsburg, he taught and was active in
the athletic programs at the two Alabama high schools of Southside in Selma and Lowndes County in Fort Deposit.
Turberville's quiet disposition and all-around knowledge of
football makes him a definite asset to the BSC coaching staff.

Offensive Line -

TOM L VONS, a graduate of Susquehanna
University this year, is a graduate assistant serving as an assistant
coach.

A native of Arwin, Pennsylvania, where he was a standout
athlete at Norwin High, he lettered for four years in football at
Susquehanna. In 1969 as defensive tackle he received Honorable
Mention on the Middle Atlantic Conference selections and last
year when the Crusaders won the Northern Division of MAC, he
was a middle guard and co-captain and received All-State Honorable Mention. His enthusiasm and recent game experience should
be a valuable asset for the Huskies.

Freshman Coach - CARL HINKLE joins the Health and Physical
Education Department this year as freshman football coach and
assistant track coach.
A native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, he was a member of t'he
BHS 1961 championship football team as a defensive end. He
received his BS degree in PE from Montana State University,
where he was a member of the 1964 NCAA (college division)
Pacific Coast Championship Team and also participated in
wrestling. He received his MS degree in PE from Ithaca College
where as a graduate assistant he served as assistant football coach
in 1968-69 and at Cornell University in 1969-70. Last year at
State University at Cortland, New York, he was assistant football
and assistant track and field coach. He also previously coached
two years of football and track and field in New York State high
schools.
