HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
JERRY DENSTORFF joined
the Health and Physical Education Department of BSC in
January 1968 and is in his second
year as head football coach of
the Huskies.
A native of Danville, Illinois,
he matriculated at Louisiana
State University and later transferred to Evansville University,
Evansville, Indiana, where he earned his Bachelor's
degree in Physical Education. His Master's degree
was awarded from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Indiana. From 1960-1963 he served as head football
coach at Mitchell High School, Mitchell, Indiana,
and one of his star pupils, Terry Cole, is currently
a fullback with the Baltimore Colts in the NFL. For
four years prior to coming to BS C, Jerry was
assistant football coach at Morehead State University,
Kentucky.
During his senior year at Evansville, he was team
captain and selected to the All-Indiana Foo.tball
i eam as a guard. In his third year of coaching at
Mitchell High School, his team lost only one game
and the following year was undefeated and unscored
upon in conference competition. This resulted in
his being voted Southern Indiana Coach of the
Year by the Louisville Courier Journal.
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
RUSSELL HOUK has been
athletic director and head wrestling coach at BSC since joining
the Health and Physical Education Department in 1957. He
has also served as head football
coach from 1964-1967 and assi stant football coach from 1957Three members of his
1961.
1967 team have gone on into
professional football-tight encl
Bob Tucker is with the Pottsville Firebirds, quarterback Dick Lichte! and wingback Stan Kucharski are
with the Harrisburg Caps.
A graduate of Lincoln High School in Elwood
City, Pa., Houk won several varsity letters in footbali,
wrestling, and track at Lock Haven State College
where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
1952. He received his Master of Education degree
from Bucknell University in 1957.
Prior to coming to BS,C, he coached successiul
wrestling teams at South Williamsport and Muncy
High Schools. When Houk became Athletic Director, BSC had the five varsity sports of football,
basketball, wrestling, baseball, and track. Under his
direction, the intercollegiate varsity sports program
was expanded to include tennis and cross country,
which were re-activated, and golf and swimming as
new sports.
Throughout his tenure, these various teams have
at one time or another excelled in Pennsylvania
State College Athletic Conference competition and,
in some instances,
ational Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and National Collegiate Athletic
Association competition. It is anticipated that as the
athletic facilities of the college expand, consideration
will be given to the addition of other varsity sports.
SEASON'S OUTLOOK
The 1969 Husky aggregation, although
slighLy more experienced than the 196b
edition, still lacks being termed a "seasoned"
squad. Coach Jerry Denstorff, who introduced a new pro-type offense to the Huskies
in his initial season at B.S.C. last year, feels
that he had a good spring practice producing a more experienced team with greater
depth in almost every position.
The one position that will definitely lack
experience is the quarterback slot. Junior
Terry Lessman was scheduled to be the
number one signal caller but a freak leg
injury this summer will keep him on th e
sideli11es for a number of games. Two
untried passers, junior Pete Grandell and
sophomore Alex Kopaez are vying for the
position.
How well the team rounds out in its fir st
few games will depend on the leadership of
several senior veterans led by Mike Barnhart, ca ptain and line-backer. Others in this
group are Bill Derr, an injured end last year
who has been converted to a tackle this year;
defensive tackle Bill Nagy; linebacker John
Stutzman; wingback Greg Berger; defensive
tackle Daryl Swan; and offensive tackl e
John Schaedler.
Returning junior veterans include two
scatbacks Bill Firestine and Mike Kolojejchick; fullback Paul Skrimcovsky; defensive
backs John Davis and Hugh Jones; offensive guards Joe Bottiglieri and Ernie Vedral;
center Steve Harrnanos; defensive tackle
Jeiry Lastowski; offensive tackle Jim McCue; linebacker Lamar Kerstetter; and split
end Marv Serban.
An inspired group of Sophomores is led
by transfer student Bob Warner, who showed
up superb at wingback in spring practice and
could develop into one of BSC's all-time
greato. Along with Warner, three offensive
backs will be in the thick of the fight ior
starting positions Jack Bucehioni and
brothers Jim and John Henning. Ken Klock
is a tine linebacker prospect; Bob Neubert
could start at offensive tackle; Jack Skelding
has Ic,oked good at defensive end while Dan
Skrimcovsky, brother of fullback Paul, will
probaJly see a lot of action as a wingback.
Two offensive end prospects are sophomore s Bob Massaker and Chris Sweet.
All the teams in the Pennsylvania Conference appear to be stronger than last year
which will keep the Huskies stepping to improve on their last year's 3-4-1 record. West
Chester and East Stroudsburg will again be
the strongest opponents on the Huskies'
schedule while Millersville and Kutztown
could also spell trouble. Bloomsburg will
welcome newcomer Adelphi University to its
schedule in the first Husky home appearance
on October 3.
With possible groundbreaking this year of
the 11ew athletic complex on the upper
ca111p11s, the football picture at B.S.C. is
much brighter. Denstorff began an extensive recruiting program last year which
shoul games this season. The advent of the new
facilities on the upper campus will be an
incentive for coaches, players, and the recruiting program.
