In weather more suited for
penguins, polar bears and a
guy named Claus, the Slip-
pery Rock tennis team braved
the elements for a 2-2 week.
The Rock netters started
their tennis ventures this
week at home against
Bloomsburg St. and once a-
gain as we looked at the
scoreboard, the popular
score of 8-1 was flashing in
our eyes in the Huskies favor.
Bob Jones scored the Rock
point, a point by the way
which was the first one ever
scored against Bloomsburg.
Next stop for the Rockets
was at the home of the tennis
playing Dukes of Duquesne.
The Rock netters were able to
get back on the top side of the
.500 mark with a 6-3 win.
Chet Czyz got the ball rolling
and Henry Schechter added
a straight set win to keep up
the momentum. Rich Zangle
was not to be denied as he
added a win and Brian Gwin
put the fourth Rocket point on
the board with his victory.
In the doubles department
the teams of Czyz-Brown and
Zangle-Jones also netted
wins.
The Rock came back home
in a match played in weather
that coach Jim McFarland de-
scribed as "“bitter cold” and
for the first time in ten years
they were upended bv Grove
City 7-2. Harold Lueken and
Jones put the Rock tallies in
the books. McFarland also
commented on the weather
saying that the team has been
playing with a lot of heart this
year, but froze their courage
in the cold against Grove
City.
The final match of the week
pitted the Rock against Ro-
bert Morris, again played in
freezing temperatures.
Lueken led off the winning
ways and Zangle, Schechter,
Jones, and Doug Brown fol-
lowed suit to keep things in
the Rock’s favor. The Rockets
added two doubles victories
to put the lid on a 7-2 win.
Coach McFarland is pleas-
ed with the Rock’s play to a
point so far this year, saying
"we are doing better than ex-
pected, but not as well as we
would like.” But certain in-
dividuals have stood out in
his mind for their perfor-
mances this season. Schech-
ter and Jones have earned
high marks for their consis-
tent play on the campaign.
Lueken has also played well
according+o McFarland say-
ing "he has done a commend-
able job playing against the
top players of each squad. He
has faced the toughest of
serves all year.”
The Rock will play again a-
gainst Lock Haven tomorrow
at home.
Men's Lacrosse
(Continued from page 18.)
burg State, 12-8. Roberts,
and Thuman each got hat-
tricks and Jim Sayre, "Studs”
Chernow, and Lacrosse
added two each.
Battling Bob MacLaughlin
added two assists over the
weekend along with “consis-
tent defensive” according to
defender Steve Emmons.
"Our goalie’s been playing
well all year and he's a big
reason for our success this
season,” continues Emmons.
“If we keep getting the of-
fense and our defense be-
comes more consistent we'll
be alright.”
