ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
RUSS HOUK resigned his position
as Head Football Coach dur~ng the
past year in order to concentrate on
his duties as Athletic Director and
Head Wrestling Coach; the latter
two positions he has held at BSC
since 1957. A graduate of Lincoln
High School in Elwood City, Pennsylvania, he won several varsity letters
in football , wrestling, and track at Lock Haven State
College where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree
iin 1952. He received his Master of Education degree
from Bucknell University in 1957.
Prior to coming to Bloomsburg State College, he
coached successful wrestling teams at South Williamsport
and Muncy High Schools. When Houk became Athletic
Director, Bloomsburg State College had the five varsity
sports of football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and
track. Under his direction, the intercollegiate varsity
sports program was expanded Lo include tennis and cross
country, which were re-activated , and golf and swimming as new sports.
Throughout his tenure, these various teams have at
one time or another exce lled in Pennsylvania State College Athletic Conference competition and, in some instances, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
aind National Collegiate Athletic Association competition. It is anticipated that as the athletic facilities of the
college expand, consideration will be given to the addition of other varsity sports.
Season's Outlook
Varsity
Following the several weeks of spring
football practice, coach J erry Denstorff
more or less conceded the fact that 1968
could be a lean year for footb all at
Bloomsburg State College. Quite a gap is
apparent in the Husky offense with the
loss through graduation of the "big
three" offensive punch - ends Bob
Tucker and Stanley Kucharski and
quarterback Dick Lichtel - all three
of whom were given consideration hy
the pros.
Selecting a starting quarterback will
be one of the important steps to be
taken by Denstorff prior to the openin g
with Lock H aven S.C . on September 20.
The position has been n arrowed down
to two sophomores-Terry Lessman and
Tom Schneider. R egardless of the starting selection, either player will need a
certain a mount of seasoning as both
played on last year's winless freshman
team.
Leading the returning letterm en will
be lin ebacker Mike Barnhart who should
be a candidate for the all-conference selections. Other returnees include Roy
Smay a t center, John Stutzman at guard ,
Bill Derr and Norbert Forcheskie at end,
Bill N agy and Bruce Krammes at tackle,
Art Sell at halfback, Dave Shell at defen sive back, and Jim Bonacci at safety.
Th e nucleus of the squad will be made
up of the above players and the balance
to provide most of the depth will be
comprised of untried sophomores. Denstorff will he introducing a slightly different offense ( basically a wing T ) in
co mparison to that of former coach
Russ Houk, and this will take time to
install.

CROSS COUNTRY
OUTLOOK 1968
The 1968 edition of the Cross-Country Team appears to have a brighter future than B.S.C. teams of
the last few years. Barring unforeseen in juries or acad~mi~ casualties, the Husky Harriers should have a
wmnmg season.
Coach Herbert is confident that his team will vastly
improve upon last year's season record of 4-4. His optimism is based on the addition of a number of last year's
freshman standouts to the varsity squad. Included in
this group are: Mike Engel, Mark Sepkowski, Mike
Horbal, Jim Carlin, and Dave Kelter. This group of
sophomores should comprise a nucleus which will give
Bloom~burg State College a formidable group of distance runners for the next three years.
Team captain Charles Moyer will be relied on by
Herbert to lead the way for the young runners. The
participation of another veteran, Dave Smithers, is
questionable unless he makes a rapid recovery from a
recent operation. Returnees Jim Gauger, Tom Henry,
Charles Moyer, and Bob Matukaitis will also be on
hand to give the Huskies the best team depth in the
last five years. New additions to this season's ten-meet
schedule are Lycoming College, Kutztown State College, and Mansfield State College.
HEAD COACH
WHEN DR. MICHAEL HERBERT
joined the faculty of Bloomsburg
State College in 1963, he immediately became one of the staunch rooters
for the Maroon and Gold. Over the
past five years, he has been vitally interested in the overall program of the
nine varsity sports.
Two years ago when Earl Voss became head basketball coach, "Mike" became his right
hand man as far as taking motion pictures, supervising
photographs, and scouting for the team. Through his
keen observation and basketball sense, he soon became a
raclio guest commentator on B.S.C. games.
Last fall Dr. Herbert was appointed coach of the cross
country squad and, working with a limited number of
personnel, did a very commendable job. In the spring he
took over the :nucleus of a good tennis team and applying
his coaching precision, produced a very good team.
In his teaching assignment at B.S.C., the University of
Maryland and Lehigh University graduate is a Professor
of Biology. He was formerly a member of the faculty of
the University of Massachusetts and Johns Hopkiins U.
