OUTLOOK FOR '65
Compared to a year ago when Russ Houk took
over the helm of the Huskies Gridiron fortunes , the
prospects of at least a break-even season are much
brighter . Last year being the first year under ithe
freshman rule, Houk was handicapped with lack of
depth from the sta11t . Then the team experienced
a series of key injuries that finally resulted in only
twenty some players availaible ,f or duty. Thus, a
rather dismal 2-win, 5-loss, 1-tie record resulted .
The freshman rule change-over will lbeigin ,t o pay
off this year as over 50 percent ,o f the regulars will
be from last year 's frosh team which posted ,a 2-2
record . The main contribution of this year's sophomores will be size to bolster last year's underweight line . Players like Big "Hoagie" Herrold
(at 6'5"-308 pounds is probably one of the largest
players in college ball in Pennsylvania), hard-hitting ,Bob Surridge and Bill Moul , both over 200
pounds , are 1bound to bring a smile to any coach's
face .
Houk will have t o relie on sophomore quarterbacks Dick Lichte! and John Farrelly , as Bob Opie
from last year 's squad did not report . Other promising offensive halfback sophomores are Joe Gerst
(outstanding as a frosh ) and Mike lNovak , who will
support returning scat backs, Gerald Schraeder and
Otis Johnson.
Unt ried newcomers .to the backfield are Tom
Vargo, an outstanding wrestler under Houk, Jim
Masich, Gary McManimen, and Terry Henry, a
gradualte from Hershey Junior College. Senior Clip
Martin is back at fullback with sophomore John
Watto ready to go .
Veteran linemen returning are Bob Letcavage,
J3arry Denes , Dick Greco , John Zarski, J ,a ck Mulka,
King Perry , Dave Force. Bernard S'chae!er ,will
replace John Whitlock at center who suffered a
severe knee injury .
A fine selecUon of ends are •available in (Bob
Tucker , Joe Lowe , !Paul Zenyuh , Stan Kurcharski,
Ed Osborne , Jerry Doto , Mike Bonnacci, Russell
Rudy. Line backers will consist of Zarski, Martin,
Kurcharski , and defenders Jerry Robinson , Wayne
Eddows, Doto and Masich.
