OUTLOOK FOR '64
The athletic complexion at BSC will change somewhat this year as the Freshman rule will be invoked
in all intercollegiate sports. This should result in
more careful sifting of freshman athletic ability and
enable a more gradual adjustment for incoming
freshman athletes to college competition.
Football at the college will experience a great
change this year as three new faces appear on the
coaching staff.
Appointed last Spring as Head
Coach was Russell E. Houk, BSC Athletic Director
and Head Wrestling Coach.
Houk has retained
George Wilwohl and Dick Mentzer from last year's
staff and has added Bob Davenport and Ron Novak.
The 50 candidates that reported on September 1 for
football practice have been narrowed down to 44.
Returning lettermen from last year's squad are:
Neil Mercando-T; Lou Ciocca-G; Dick Greco-T;
Bob Kurzinsky-QB; Rich Boerner-HE; Hal ArnottHB; Roy Resavage-FB; Jeff Ward-E; Mike BonacciE; Jerry Doto-E; Bob Letca.vage-T; John Mulka-G;
Fred Stoichefl'-HB; Clip Martin-FE; Steve BilykHB: Joe Lowe-E; John Whitelock-C; King Perry-T.
With the graduation from last year's squad of such
key players as Larry Tironi, Dick Davala, Joe Casarella, Gary Barnaba, Bart Wilenski, Roy Peffer and
with the Freshman Rule being in effect, Coach Houk
and the staff are lacking depth in almost all positions.
The backfield is shaping up but is minus a real speed
demon. Weight is a definite factor absent in the
line. It appears BSC linemen will be drastically outweighed in almost every contest. Coach Houk will
have to rely on good physical condition and hustle
to out-maneuver the opponents.
Some promising
newcomers are Tony Mattucci, George Masich, J erry
Robinson, and Robert Tucker.

at Cresson High School, before going to Hollidaysburg where he was head football and baseball coach
in junior high school competition. Mentzer later
became head backfield coach, jayvee basketball coach,
and head track coach at the Hollidaysburg Senior
High School. Following an appointment as head
coach at Eastern High, Washington, D. C., his teams
logged 120 victories, 53 losses, 6 ties - winning many
area championships. Dick joined the BSC coaching
staff last Fall and will also coach baseball.
Freshman Coach George Wilwohl, an outstanding
athlete at North Catholic High School, Pittsburgh,
attended Slippery Rock State College where he
served as captain of that team and was voted on
the All-Teachers College 1952 team. He later coached at his alma mater, North Catholic High School,
and while teaching in Pittsburgh area schools, became an outstanding official in football and basketball
in Western Pennsylvania. George, who was end

this Fall, also is Head Track Coach.
Assistant Freshman Coach Ron Novak is a native
of California, Pa., where he graduated from high
school and California State College. Prior to coming
