FOOTBALL OUTLOOK - 1962
Thirty-three upperclassmen, including 22 lettermen, along with 25 freshmen, reported for preseason practice on September 4. At the end of a
week, the coaching staff is expressing optimism.
With eight seniors setting a torrid pace and with a
number of frosh and last year's reserves showing
promise, the squad hopes to better last year's 4-4
record.
Candidates for guard and center form a strong
nucleus for both offense and defense. One or more
of the 5 able contenders for the center slot may be
moved to other positions to utilize their ability and
strengthen other spots. Bob Christina, who seems
headed for the best year in his career and a top
rating in the conference, is being challenged by Larry
Tironi and Joe Casarella. Lou Ciocca and Neil
Mercando have too much fight and experience to
be sidelined as reserves.
Six guards provide the Huskies with what seems
to be their strongest array of talent. Trevor Carpenter, John Sills, and Gary Stackhouse are veterans
of 2 or 3 years. Jack Rankin, Carl Sheran, and Jack
Currie have earned the plaudits of the staff during
drills. Although there is a lack of depth at tackle,
the trio of Don Denick, Ed Cawley, and Gary Barnaba have used their weight, strength, and experience to form a good nucleus.
Freshmen Gary McManimen and George Cunningham have joined Dick Davala, Art Tinner, Lee
Fredericks, and Jeff Ward at end to strengthen
what proved to be a weak point last year.
Dick Rohrer, senior quarterback, holds the key
to a large measure of the success of the Huskies in
1962. Ken Robbins, another senior, will spell Rohrer
and also direct the defense. Sophomore Bob Kurzinski has shown promise as a good passer, runner, and
field general.
There are able and tested runners and pass receivers in the backfield, including Moses Scott, Roy
Peffer, Stan Beiter, Rich Boerner, Gary Sprout,
Rocco Forte, and Tom Switzer. Scott can go all
the way at any time on either pass or running plays.
The schedule is tough West Chester, East
Stroudsburg, Lock Haven, Mansfield, King's College - to name a few, but the entire squad is anxious
to prove that the Huskies have a winning team.
THE COACHING STAFF
WALTER R. BLAIR, HEAD COACH
Walt Blair will direct the Husky grid machine for
the sixth year after serving two years as assistant
coach at Bloomsburg. Blair was an outstanding
athlete at Northeast High School in Philadelphia,
lettering in football, baseball, and basketball.
Military service in the Army during World War
II ended a brief stay at Temple University. While in
the Service, Blair played football with the Eighth
Armored Division and Camp Polk Teams. In Sep tember, 1946, he entered West Chester S. C. to begin
an outstanding career in college competition under
Coach Glenn Killinger. It was during this period
that the Rams became one of the nation's small
college gridiron powers.
Blair played in three
post-season bowl games, seeing service in both the
line and backfield.
An able and enthusiastic competitor, Blair used
his know-how to good advantage while coaching at
N eshaminy, Jenkintown, and Chambersburg High
Schools. His teams rolled up 30 victories, 13 losses,
and I tie. In the Fall of 1955, Coach Blair received
a call to come to Bloomsburg as Assistant Coach.
Jack Yohe, then head man of the Huskies, had observed Blair's prowess firsthand when Yoht; served
as backfield coach at West Chester under Killinger.
Blair's record as head coach since 1957 is 20-17-2.
