THE COACHES
Head Coach Walt Blair will hold the reins of the Husky grid
machine for the third year after serving two years as assistnat coach
at Bloomsburg. Blair was an outstanding athlete at Northeast High
School in Philadelphia., lettering in football., baseball., and basketball.
Military service in the Arll\'f during World War II ended a brief
stay at Temple University. While in the service., Blair played football
with the Eighth Armored Division and Camp Polk Teams. In September,
1946., he entered West Chester S.T.c. to begin an outstanding career
in college competition under Coach Glenn Killinger. It was during this
period that the Rams became one of the nation's small college gridiron
powers. Blair played in three post-season bowl games, seeing service
in both the line and backfield.
An a ble and enthusiastic competitor, Blair used his kno1-1-how to
good advantage while coaching at Neshaminy, Jenkintown., and Chambersburg High Schools. His teams rolled up 30 victories., 13 losses, and
1 tie .•
In the fall of 1955, Blair received a call to come to Bloomsburg
as assistant coach. Jack Yohe, then head man of the Huskies, had
observed Blair's prowess firsthand when Yohe served as backfield coach
at West Chester under Killinger.

Coaching three intercollegiate sports keeps Harold Shelly busy
from September through May. A graduate of Ohio Northern University,
Shelly acts as trainer, scout, and assistant coach during the football
season. As head coach of Bloomsburg's basketball squad for ten years,
he has never had a losing season. vlhen the court season ends, Shelly
directs the destinies of the Husky track and field squad.

This will be the third year at Bloomsburg for Russ Houk who piled
up an enviable record in football and wrestling while a student at
Lock Haven s.T.c. For five years, Russ turned out championship
wrestling squads a t South Williamsport am Muncy High Schools. In
addition to assisting with football, Houk coaches the Husky grapplers
and serves as Athletic Director.

Coach Blair is very happy to have a former college team and class
mate, Don Heilman, to serve as backfield coach with the Huskies.
Heilman joined the coaching staff in the fall of 1958 after 3 years
at Downington and 5 years as Head Coach at the Alexis I. DuPont High
School in Wilmington. He and Blair played for West Chester from
1946-1949 when Coach Killinger 1 s Rams won 36 while losing only 3--a
proud record for any team and coach.

1959 OUTLOOK
lrlhen Coach Walt Blair sent out invitations for pre-season
practice, it was very apparent that Husky gridiron fans would see
a lot of new faces in the 1959 campaign. As a result of graduation,
drop outs, academic and financial difficulties, and conflicts with
class schedules, last year's squad of 63 was reduced to 26. Of the
19 returning lettermen, 9 had won their monograms in the backfield, and
some of the 18 had completed the minimum requirements to earn a
varsity letter.
At the outset of pre-season practice sessions, Coach Blair took
immediate steps to knit new offensive and defensive line units with
the handful of returning veterans as a nucleus. To complicate matters
further, Bob Warren, crack junior guard from Mechanicsburg, turned
up for practice with an injured foot which will keep him sidelined
for half the season; Fred Frey, promising sophomore back from Tunkhannock could not report due to illness; Ed Lockman, Hazleton sophomore who lettered at guard last year, also sustained an injury during
the summer.
Two rather general factors will have a strong bearing on what
the Huskies can accomplish this season. Five games in the eight
game schedule will be played away from home, and the necessity of
traveling considerable distances and using an inexperienced squad
on a strange field can cause difficulties. Another factor to be
dealt with is the general build-up of strength among all the teams
in the Teachers College Conference.
Most problems tend to look relatively insignificant when campared
with the need for replacing stellar performers like big Stan Covington
and Morit~ Schultz, ends; Paul Spahr and Jack Chidester, tackles;
Leo Mulhall, Ken Wood, and Gary Allen, guards; Woody Rhoads,center;
Oscar Snyder, quarterback; Bob Bottorf and Jerry Natishan, backs.
Speaking of critical needs, the Husky mentor recently listed
these: finding a replacement for Stan Covington who was, for two
years, one of the leading punters among the small colleges in the
nation; developing a good place kicker; finding a back who can toss
passes like Ozzie Snyder did during the past two years; developing
a sound defensive and off ensive line to replace the effective combination riddled by graduation in May.
On the brighter aide, the Huskies can expect good performances
from a number of experienced, fairly speedy, hard-running backs
including Bobby Rohm, Dave Gerber, Johnny Johnson, Joe Rishkofski,
Joe Gronka and several promising freshman; Ed Galitsky, Stan Elinsky,
and ~Jayne Miller should be adequate or better in the pass-receiving
department; in pass-defense patterns, Johnson, Rohm, Glenn Gruber
and Fred Frey form a pretty sound coni>ination; offensive line
strength seems improved but should get progressively better with
the expected development of Dick Staber, Roy Shifflet, and two
freshmen -- John Sills and Gary Stackhouse.
1959 Outlook - continued
Sports Publicity Office
In a nutshell, it could be said that returning veterans will
equal or excel their performance of last season. The overall success
of the squad during the season will depend, however, on the performance of freshmen and eligible transfers and the extent to which the
coaching staff can develop reserve depth, especially in the forward
wall. Coach Blair is looking to Joe Rishkofski to take care of punting
assignments and do a lot of pass receiving and ball-carrying in general.
Among the promising freshmen who are likely to earn a starting
assignment during the season are: Al 11.Jilliams, end; Bernie Patynski
and Bill Garson, tackles; Otto Harazim, Gary Stackhouse, and John
Sills, guards; Bob Christina, center; Ron Jenkins, Bob Rohrer, Moses
Scott, and Jim Dixon, backs.
In the first 5 games of the 1958 season, the Huskies rolled up
victories against Shippensburg, King's College, Mansfield, Cortland
(New York) and Millersville. They meet the same five in that order
again this season, and Coach Blair is expecting each game to be a
critical test for his charges. Shippensburg dropped a harrd-fought
20-19 decision to the Huskies last year, and Bloomsburg pulled a 16-12
victory out of the fire at~ King's College after trailing 12-0 at the
half.
One thing is quite certain, and it adds up to the makings of
some good football. Squad enthusiasm and esprit de corps, which
played such an important part last year, are very much in evidence
again this season.
STUDENT COACHES
The coaching staff has welcomed the addition of two student
assistants who were outstanding performers for the Huskies before
being side-lined with injuries. Both men are seniors.
Big Don Wright nade his mark as a member of the Husky squad
during his freshman and sophomore years at Bloomsburg.Following a
tour in the armed forces, he returned to the line up but terminated
his playing career as a result of an injury. Last year Wright was
a big help working with the line and especially with freshmen and
the JV squad.
Jack Chidester earned three letters with the Maroon and Gold
squad before being side-lined by an injury last season. Jack is the
agressive, spirited, tough, and able competitor that Coach Blair
likes to have on the squad. It is hoped that during the year he can
communicate that same enthusiasm and know-how to some of the veterans
and especially to some of the newcomers on the squad.
