THE COACHES
Head Coach Walt Blair will hold the reins of the Husky grid
machine for the first time after serving two years as assistant coach
at Bloomsburg. Blair was an outstanding athlete at Northeast Iti.gh
School in Philadelphia, lettering in football, baseball, and basketball.
Military service in the Anny during World War II ended a brief
stay at Temple University. While in the service, Blair played football
with the Eighth Armored Division and Camp Polk Teams. In September,
1946, he entered West Chester S. T. C. to begin an outstanding careeer
in college competition under Coach Glenn Killinger. It was durin5 this
period that the Rams became one of the nation's small college gridiron
powers. Blair played in three post-season bowl games, seeing service
in both the line and backfield.
An able and enthusiastic competitor, Blair used his know-how to
good advantage while coaching at Neshaminy, Je1I1Kintown, and Chambers-
burg High Schools.
His teams rolled up 30 victories, 13 losses, amd
1 tie.
In the fall of 1955, Blair received a call to come to Bloomsburg
as assistant coach. Jack Yohe, then head man of the Huskies, had
observed Blair's prowness firsthand when Yohe served as backfield coach
at West Chester under Killinger.

Coaching three intercollegiate sports keeps Harold Shelly busy
from September through May. A graduate of Ohio Northern University,
Shelly acts as trainer, scout, and assistant coach during the football
season. As head coach of Bloomsburg's basketball squad for eight years,
he has never had a losing season. When the court season ends, Shelly
directs the destinies of the Husky track and field squad.

Newcomer to the coaching staff is Russ Houk who piled up an
enviable record in football and wrestling while a student at Look
Haven S. T. C. For the past five years, Russ has turned out championship wrestling squads at South Williamsport and Muncy High Schools. In
addition to assisting with football, Houk will coach the Husky grapplers
and will serve as Athletic Director.

Bloansburg, has returned to complete his degree. Sidelined because
of injuries sustained in military service, Puckey will handle the job
of coaching Bloomsburg 1 s JV squad.

1957 OUTLOOK
One of the most inexperienced squads since World War II will
represent Bloomsburg this year in the annual gridiron wars. Twenty
four of last year's squad are missing from the current roster due to
graduation, injury, withdrawal, or academic difficulty. Most noticeable
among the absentees are ends Bob Stroup, Dick Strine, and Bob Asby,~,
Harry Hughes, who won all-state recognition for the past several years
at tackle, will be sorely missed on the forward wall, and Joe Wascavag~
and Frank Kaminsky, bulwarks 'Of defense at guard, leave a gap that will
be hed to fill. Husky opponents should be relieved at the absence of
"Tanker" Joe Malczyk a.nd "Bo" Rainey, backfield stars noted for their
plunging and bru'lsing tactics in the last two years.
1
The bulk of the work at end will fall on two jupiors, Stan
Covington and Morrie Schultz. Botha re lettermen but lack game experience. The number of reserve ends are 1:1,.mited and inexperienced. ·
Due to the graduation of Hughes and the possible shifting of
"Chick" DeFebo to center, the tackle spots will be wide open. Vying
for varsity berths are Tom Vaxmonsky, a senior; Paul Spahr, a junior;
Jack Chidester, Hank Orband, Roy Shifflet, and Bob Lesko, all sophomores. Lack of experience will be the greatest problem to overcome at
this spot.
The brightest spot on the line seems to be at the guard position
where a host of scrappy candidates will be contending for recognition.
This group will be led by Frank Pruseh, a senior and one of the stellar
performers in last season's line. Ken Wood, a junior and two year
understudy to Wascavage, should come into h:i.s own during the season.
Others to be ~eckoned with are Leo Mulhall, and Joe Johnston, juniors;
and sophomores Joe Panichello, Paul Manko, and Phil Lockcuff.
With the loss of first-stringer Woody Rhoads, due to a summer
injury, and the ""-estionable performance of previously injured George
Chaump and Bernie Zaborowski, Coach Blair hopes to solve the gap at
center with the conversion of veteran °Chick11 DeFebo, a senior, from
tackle to center. Reserve strength is questionable pending the successful shifting of Bill Thomas and Phil Lockcuff.
Among a number of pranising freshmen are Kenneth Hill, Bob Warren,
Gary Reddig, Ray Naylor, Ed Wojciekowski, Jim Conrad, Walter Fake, and
Gerald Hittle.

THUMBNAIL SKETCHES - RETURNING Vl!!TERAR5
GEORGE CHAUMP Center - Senior - 21 - 5, 1011 - 180 - West Pittston, Penna. ,
One of the big question marks in the line-up this year as the
result of a knee injury early last season. Standout center for two
years prior to injury. His return to the line would be a big help to
the Huskies.
FRANK PRUSCH Guard - Senior - 20 - 5, 11" - 195 - Duryea, Penna.
-Former Duryea High School great. Winner of two varsity letters.
Key spark-plug in the forward wall. Noted for driving, slashing play.
Tough, well-built veteran.
THOMAS VAXMONSKY Tackle - Senior - 20 - 6 1 211 - 208 - Jenkins Township
For three years an understudy tackle to Harry Hughes, Tom now seems
ready to take his place as a stalwart in both offense and defense. Big
and rangy, Tom stands a good chance of being a stellar performer in the
line if he reaches his potential.
CARL DEFEBO Tackle - Senior - 21 - 6 1 111 - 220 - Berwick, Penna.
?or the past three years, 11 Chick11 has continued the same bruising
play that won him honors at Berwick High School. A three-letter winner,
Chick has given the Huskies a consistent, fired-up brand of football.
In spite of his weight, he has shown that he can go the full distance,
if necessary~
JOHN OUSTRICH Quarterback - Senior - 20 - 51 10" - 150 - Taylor, Penna.
The key to the Huskies' over-all success will rest on the shoulders
of this veteral signal caller. Returning for his second varsity assignment, John's spirited handling of the squad, his sharp passing, and his
football sense make him a definite asset in the gridiron picture.
JONAH GOOBIC Halfback - Senior - 22 - 5'1011 - 165 - Plains, PennaCoach Blair has high regard for this spunky halfback from Plains.
A fierce competitor, Jonah plays a hard-driving, scrappy brand of football.
Held in the shadows by former Husky greats, Goobic should display a brand
of ball which will delight Husky fans.
EDWARD WATTS
Halfback - Senior - 22 - 6• - 195 - Jenkintown, Penna.
good portion of the Husky running attack will be carried by Eddie
Watts, a former standout performer for Blair at Jenkintown High. The
two joined forces when Ed was a sophomore fledgling. Watts has developed
into a top-notch college back, picking up three varsity letters in the
gridiron sport and an equal number in track.
A
GERALD~ Fullback - Senior - 21 - 61 - 185 - Mechanicsburg, Penna.
Barring injuries, this compactly-built speedster should provide
considerable punch to the Husky offense~ Despite the fact that he
played behind the great "Tanker" Malczyk for two years, Gerry showed
enough pranise to win two varsity letters,
MORITZ SCHULTZ End - Junior - 23 - 61 - 180 - Plains, Penna.
Florrie returned from riilitary ser, vice last year and quickly reaestablished himself as a fleet, pass-snaring end. Bull-dog determination and
desire have high lighted his past performances~

Thumbnail Sketches - Con' t
STANIEiY COVINGTON End - Junior - 20 - 6 1 311 - 198 - Neshaminy, Penna.
Tallest man on the squad; Stan uses his big hands and long legs to
good advantage. Picked up a lot of poise while earning his first varsit;y
letter last season.
PAUL SPAHR Tackle - Junior - 19 - 6 1 211 - 205 - Collingdale, Penna.
Paul used his height and weight to good advantage last year, winning
his first varsity letter competing against such formidable performers as
Hughes, DeFebo, and Vaxmonsky.
LEO MULHALL Guard - Junior - 25 - 5 1 9" - 180 - Shenandoah, Penna.
This scrappy, durable Irishman is back for another try after a bout
with a serious illness two years ago. A service veteran, Leo is one of
the older members of the squad. A spirited but steady player, he uses
his stocky frame to good advantage.
KENNETH WOOD Guard - Junior - 19 - 5' 1111 - 185 - Mechanicsburg, Penna.,
Younger of the Wood brothers, both of whom were outstanding in high
school gridiron play, Ken is a solid, hard-hitting lineman who copped
,two letters playing ttheads-up" ball.
OSCAR SNYDER Quarterback - Junior - 20 - 51 8n - 160 ... Sunbury, Penna,
-Oscar proved himself while playing at Sunbury under Jimmy Hinds,
former Husky grid-great. A sharp passer, Oscar already owns two letters,
and should earn another pair for his play-calling skill,
ROBERT BOTTORF Fullback - Junior - 24 - 51 911 - 185 - Bellef ont e, Penna.
Bob returned to Bloomsburg last season after his military service,
determined to continue the feats which had already brought him one
letter. ttF earless 11 Bob is a fast-charging, hard-hitting runner who never
seems to give up.
ROY SHIFFLET Tackle - Sophomore - 19 - 6 1 - 210 - Williamsport, Penna,
Much improved over last year, Shifflet should be a big help in the
line. Played outstanding ball at Williamsport High and seems to have
hit his stride this year in college competition. Big, tough, and fast
for all his 210 pounds.
JACK CHIDESTER Tackle - Sophomore - 19 - 6 1 111 - 210 - Perkiomen Prep,Pa.,
Jack was one of the mainstays on the Perkiomen Prep squad and
battled his way to a varsity letter in his freshman year at Bloomsburg.
Steady, dependable, and tough, Jack should develop into an outstanding
Husky gridder.
ROBERT ROHM Halfback - Sophomore - 19 - 5, 1011 - 165 - Muncy, Penna,
A tough 1J1ah in both wrestling and football, Bob has the indomitable
spirit needed for a ball-carrier. His alertness, speed, and wiry physique made him one of two freshmen to win a varsity letter last year.

Bob returned to Bloomsburg last season after his military service,
determined to continue the feats which had already brought him one

seems to give up.

Husky gridder.
ROBERT ROHM Halfback - Sophomore - 19 - 5, 1011 - 165 - Muncy, Penna,
A tough 1J1ah in both wrestling and football, Bob has the indomitable
