My project is a case study of a 7th grade student that I worked with during my student teaching in the Cumberland Valley School District. I created three lesson plans that were specifically targeted at improving the student's motivation to write. I completed an environmental assessment of the classroom and school, analyzed the possible reason for the behavior, and collaborated with my cooperating teacher to implement differentiated instruction to help the student meet their goal of completing writing tasks.

This project was my Winter/Spring 2020 Research which was funded by the Shippensburg University College of Arts and Sciences SFRE Grant, and it was mentored by Doctor Ji Young Choi. In this project, I studied topics involving congruence and read articles about divisibility and compiled a method to test for divisibility by a given prime number P.,This presentation was part of the Mathematics Student Research Presentations.

This study documents daily weather records (temperature, precipitation) for Assateague Island for 50+ years and compares these to tree ring records from this barrier island and neighboring areas. Instrumental records up to 2018 show trends toward: 1) warmer climate conditions for low and average temperatures, 2) decreasing snowfall rates, and 3) increasing rainfall. With warmer wetter conditions, annual tree growth histories should, hypothetically, show increased growth rates, however, tree growth rates are declining suggesting tree health is increasingly impaired in living forests irrespective of more optimum conditions for tree growth.,This presentation was part of the Honors Capstone Symposium, Part 2, and the Mathematics Student Research Presentations.

Small groups of participants took notes while watching a brief (10 minute) TED Talk in a classroom setting. Half of the groups were exposed to two confederates who silently used their cell phones throughout the video presentation. Confederates in the control condition took notes during the video presentation along with the participants. Participants' quiz scores were not affected by the confederates' phone use. Additional measures of involvement and interest were also examined.

Job-related burnout, a three-dimensional experience involving emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment is found to be common among those in the mental health field due to the nature and gravity of their work. With a growing focus on recovery-oriented care, many mental health agencies are increasing their employment of peer-providers. Peer providers are mental health workers with diagnosed mental illness who actively and intentionally use their personal experience with mental illness to help their clients. These workers may be prone to the experience of microaggressions and stigma related to mental illness in the workplace. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) were completed by mental health workers serving four counties in Pennsylvania. Among peer-workers, there were significant associations between levels of burnout and both sense of community and sense of control as measured by the community and control subscales of the AWS. These associations were not found among non-peer providers.,This paper was presented as a research talk at the Honors Capstone Symposium, Part 1.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) were completed by mental health workers serving four counties in Pennsylvania. Among providers with their own lived experience, referred to as peer workers , there were significant associations between levels of burnout and both sense of community and sense of control as measured by the community and control subscales of the AWS. These associations were not found among non peer providers.,This poster was presented at the Honors Capstone Symposium, Part 1, which took place on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at 2:00pm.

The Role of Gatekeeping on Fox News Network
In an age when discovering the truth remains at the core of the news-gathering process, it is important to understand how coverage of current events differs among news outlets and how these variations in coverage shape and even obscure truth for U.S. viewers. Fox News has been criticized for its conservative slant on current events. However, the network still provides viewers with news programs--originally created to provide unbiased, straightforward news reporting. In comparison, its opinion programs were created to provide a specific perspective on the same current events. Thus, Fox News is home to two different forms of programming, each serving a distinct purpose. Public media sources, like PBS NewsHour, emphasize the importance of universal access to information and balanced news coverage that does not exhibit an overt bias. With data and observational reports, my research illustrates how Fox News and PBS NewsHour present and shape viewers' understanding of American politics.,This paper was presented during Honors Capstone Symposium, Part 1.

Water is crucial for sustaining human life. However, in many parts of the world, clean water is a rare commodity. With population growth and boundary tensions, competition for clean water is growing in many regions of the world. By analyzing the Middle East's water scarcity crisis, we are able to foresee what the future may hold for tensions and possible conflict over water.,This video was created for and presented at the Virtual 2020 Minds at Work Conference.
