An art therapy workshop to increase therapeutic attunement
Abstract
The following research paper focuses on the opportunity for clinicians to integrate art therapy and sex therapy in practice and highlights the critical need for integrated educational opportunities between the two therapies. The author covers the definitions of art therapy and sex therapy and highlights several common theories, including Person-Centered Theory, Expressive Therapies Continuum, Attachment Theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competency. The literature review covers the historical and current ways mental healthcare and society have negatively impacted healthy sexual norms. Additionally, the current educational requirements for art therapists and existing courses integrating art therapy and sex therapy are addressed. A workshop curriculum is then developed as an introductory tool for clinicians to explore further art and sex therapy and the benefits of integrating the two fields. The author argues that further research is needed between art therapy and sex therapy for the development of both fields, as well as more educational opportunities at the graduate and CE levels.
