Mary Buchanan Joins Carlson Library Faculty The University Libraries is pleased to welcome Mary Buchanan as Carlson Library’s newest Reference and Information Literacy Librarian. Mary has helped us out in the past and now joins us as a permanent, full-time faculty member. Her responsibilities include assisting faculty in the classroom with information literacy instruction, providing reference services in Carlson Library, and helping to enhance the information resources and services available through the Libraries. Wireless Access Update Both Carlson and Suhr Libraries are equipped with wireless access. However, recent upgrades in hardware and software have caused access issues within Carlson Library and elsewhere on the Clarion Campus. Because of these problems, Carlson Library has suspended loans of laptop computers until the wireless network is once again stable. We apologize for this inconvenience but remind you that many desktop computers are still available for your use. Computer Tip: Get The Real Scoop At Snopes! Do you know about “Snopes”? Snopes.com is a Web site that is known as the “Urban Legends Reference Pages”. It’s a place where you’ll find out if something is true or not. Snopes is dedicated to finding out the truths and falsities of urban legends, modern day myths, and other stories that travel around the Internet and the world. Snopes.com is hosted by Barbara and David Mikkelson, a married couple from California. They are very determined to provide the complete truth to their Web site visitors. They don't want anyone leaving Snopes feeling like they still don't know the facts. They spend most of their time researching their topics and when I say research, I mean extensive researching. They also try to include references with their findings when they can. The official Web site address is http://www.snopes.com. Go there to read everything from Businesses to Old Wives' Tales and from Sports to food. They even have a special category for Disney myths and one for Coke products. Everything is covered! Each story on the Snopes website has a rating of either: True, False, Multiple Truth Values, Undetermined, or Unclassifiable Veracity. Each one will also have the facts behind why it's rated the way it is. The Mikkelsons try to keep the site updated as much as possible, so you can be sure you'll find the latest news there. If you'd like to add your own story to the site, you can use the message board to do so. Snopes also works with photos, so don't forget to check those out as well. Be careful, though! You could easily lose yourself in all of the great stories. Have fun and keep it real, my friends!
