Clarion University Student Senate Meeting Minutes September 24, 2018 I. II. III. IV. V. Call to Order President Shepherd called the meeting of the fall semester of the Clarion University Student Senate to order at 7:30PM. Roll Call Absent: Senator Henderson Senator Bumoskey Senator Mason Additions to the Agenda Senator Krupa – 1 under new business. Approval of the Minutes The minutes were approved as presented. Officers Report A. Vice President of Student Affairs – Dr. Fenske Dr. Fenske is looking for students’ ideas on the NSSE survey; specifically, what incentives to offer to students. The current incentive is the opportunity to win a $750 gift card to book store courtesy of the CSA, a $500 Clarion University Leadership Award (aka a scholarship), a North Face backpack, or 1 of 10 $25 restaurant or retail gift cards. Senator Klanica recommends the offer of additional flex. Senator Matotek recommends using a gift card to Crooks as one of the gift cards. President Shepherd recommends using local stores as gift card options. Clarion University has recently learned of the passing of one of our faculty. Anyone impacted by loss, or if you notice your friends are heavily impacted, please go to counseling center on campus. This will be a tough time. Student Senate took a moment of silence in honor of Mel Michele. B. Advisor’s Report – Mr. Shaffer On October 24, Clarion University will hold its 2nd annual Domestic Violence Awareness Day. In the Gemmell MPR, there will be many activities and resources. A beta test was conducted on the check-in software last week. It was successful, though there are some additional questions for Campus Labs. C. Director’s/Board of Director’s Report – Ms. Machokas Last year, we started to send out movie polls. There will be a new poll sent out tomorrow. The poll will be sent through email and conducted on CU Connect. There is a CSA board meeting this Thursday, September 27 at 6:00PM in Suites on Main North. D. President’s Report – President Shepherd President Shepherd welcomes Dr. Dale to the meeting. Dr. Dale and her husband are settling into the house. Dr. Dale has met with President Shepherd, to discuss student concerns. Trustee Zuzzio has been committed to working with students. Dr. Dale is aware of the housing and food concerns. She hopes to work together to resolve some issues. The True North program has begun, which hopes to work with enrollment and pricing. They are looking for a student to sit on that committee. Dan Greenstein is working to better the system. He will be here Oct 16 and he wants your feedback. Dr. Dale looks forward to working with the student body this year. The Student Senate retreat was this past weekend. We brainstormed ideas on how to be active on campus. This weekend, Friday September 28, 2018 – Sunday September 30, 2018, seven senators will be attending the BSGP Conference at Bloomsburg University. We are also working on the contest to name Dr. Dale’s Car. All students on campus can submit an idea on CU Connect starting on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. The winner of the contest will be announced the following Wednesday, October 4, 2018. The winner will get to have dinner, with a menu of their choosing, with Dr. Dale and a friend. Tomorrow, September 25, 2018, is National Voter Registration Day. There will be tabling throughout campus tomorrow as well as an informational event in the evening. We will be participating in Stuff-A-Truck this year. There is a box in the office for donations. On October 4, 2018, we will turn them in to ABLE. E. Vice President’s Report- Vice President Bumbarger Student Senate had a very successful retreat. There were some great ideas for the committees this year. We have started ad hoc Relay for Life committee. F. Treasurer’s Report- Treasurer Custer i. Large Item Capital Balance: $151,660.40 ii. Capital Fund: $327,709.04 iii. Senate Budget: $28,010.89 G. Vice President Rules and Regulations Report- Vice President Hinchberger This is the last week of club re-registrations. H. Student Trustee’s Report- Trustee Zuzzio On Thursday, September 20, 2018, the Council of Trustees met at the Venango Campus. There is a new math tutoring center in Becht Hall. It has been successful, helping over 50 students. The council discussed offering a new nursing degree in Somerset county. VI. Venango Campus is working with the county and a local plastics industry to set program to help train new hires. Clarion University has hired ten new tenure track faculty. The steam lines on campus have been approved and the asbestos has been removed from them. The Board of Governors are currently working on redesigning the system, looking at over 100 policies to rollback to give more power to university presidents and allow things to be handled internally without as much bureaucracy. The Venango Senate has set their 2018-2019 goals, which include: extending the library and lab hours, updating classrooms, and adjusting parking prices. They have had success with programming by working in conjunction with faculty. Trustee Zuzzio will be attending, and later reporting on, the PACT conference October 12, 2018 in Harrisburg. I. Secretary’s Report- Secretary Boyle No Report. J. Faculty Senate Report- Senator Skunda Faculty Senate held their biweekly meeting today. Dave Dollins came in and gave a presentation on enrollment and retention. He presented a lot of data, mostly showing how we compared to other schools, and had great ideas. Representative Committee Reports A. Clarion Call No Report B. University Technology Advisory Committee- Senator Bolha 52 Computers are up for redistribution through the fall 2018 cycle, the call for tech proposals and requests are due October 15, 2018. C. Panhellenic Committee We have Bonnie Shade coming in. She’ll be at Hart Chapel talking about sexual assault/violence awareness. National Hazing Prevention Week starts this week. We will be tabling to raise awareness Tuesday, September 25, 2018, Wednesday, September 26, 2018, and Thursday September 27, 2018. Greek Sing will be March 23, 2019 D. Interhall Council Interhall Council is required to be affiliated with CAACUR. The conference is fantastic to learn about rules, policies, and meeting proceedings. This year it will be held in Ohio. Chad Thomas will be at our meeting this week to address the facility concerns of the students. Interhall Council will be selling Sheetz booklets. Clarion’s Got Talent is November 30, 2018 and is open to all. Clubs will be tabling and donating prize baskets. E. UAB VII. Glow yoga is this Friday, September 28, 2018 8:00PM – 9:00PM get tickets at info desk. The Miss CU pageant is this Saturday, September 29, 2018, and also has a glow theme. If you want to be on the PR Committee, see Aaliyah McMullen. F. ABLE ABLE is the biggest community service organization on campus. We average 2228 students each meeting. Stuff-A-Truck will be this weekend. We stuff a truck with as much food then we send it to a larger collector. We average 40% of donations. Interhall Council plan on having residence halls compete in collecting the most donations. CU Service Day is ABLE’s named event where they come together and bring as many students as possible. They go out in the community and offer students for service. They learned about what it is like to recycle. They went to a plant and saw how it was done. ABLE wants to start a recycling initiative on campus. The Kids at Heart committee works with kids to give back to the committee. The Service Trip committee is going to Gettysburg to learn about service and leadership. Conrad Warner will be at Tuesday’s meeting to see what concerns the community has, they are not sure if Donna Oberlander will be there. G. BSU BSU wants to spread the message that they are not only open to minority students, anyone can join. BSU’s Vibe Out was last Thursday, September 20, 2018. Their grill was stolen from the suites on main south if you know anything, please let BSU know. This Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM, in the library on level A is the annual student body meeting. The Unity Community dinner will be Sunday, September 30, 2018 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM in Moore Hall. H. Allies Allies now has a webpage on the clarion.edu website with resources for students, faculty, and staff, as well as a resource list of what is in the allies office, an all gender neutral bathrooms map, and they spoke with Dr. Radaker about creating a safe zone map. Standing Committee Reports A. Appropriations Committee- Treasurer Custer The appropriations committee moves to approve a $300 request for a float for ROTC/Leadership and Excellence Club. It will be designed like a tank in conjunction with ROTC. The motion passes with one abstention. VIII. IX. X. B. Student Relations Committee- Senator Klanica The Social Equity dinner will be November 14, 2018 at 7:00PM. Senator Klanica will be holding a meeting with Senator Henderson, Amy, and Matt next Monday, October 1, 2018, to find out what is required from her committee. They will be meeting to discuss budget and responsibilities. C. Academic Affairs Committee- Senator Skunda Watch for the GroupMe and the first meeting date. D. Rules and Regulations Committee- VP Hinchberger They begin training on reviewing new constitutions. They have four in right now. E. Student Facilities Committee- Senator Bolha The Student Facilities Committee survey has 100-180 responses. They are setting up meeting with others to discuss results of survey. They will also set up tabling times. The main focus is on what to put in the empty room by mail room. F. Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Concerns Committee- Senator Lopreiato Senator Lopreiato met with Vice President Bumbarger and discussed some new ideas. The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Concerns Committee will be starting cookies for comments, where they hand out cookies and take in comments from students. They will make safety facts posters. They could address BSU concerns and set up new, or more, cameras. They will also be setting up the Safety Walk. G. Community Relations Committee- Senator Claypool Senator Claypool met with Tyler Kitzmiller and decided to reschedule the Good Neighbor Program canvassing to 11:00AM – 2:00PM next Wednesday, October 3, 2018 and 1:00PM – 4:00PM Friday, October 5, 2018. Hopefully this extra time gives the committee a chance to get materials gathered and more students involved. They will meet with other organizations. Next Tuesday, October 2, 2018, the borough council will be meeting in the Clarion Public Library. They will mostly be discussing ALF. H. Website Management Committee- Senator Brush President Shepherd was the first senator of the week. It went over really well. The new senator, which was drawn tonight, is Senator Blakely. Student Senate is currently reaching over 500 people on all platforms. Unfinished Business New Business Senator Krupa moves to be excused from the September 17, 2018 meeting, as she was sick. Senator Skunda seconds. The motion passes without abstentions. Open Forum or Announcements XI. The Clarion County College Republicans is an RSO that upholds republican ideologies and assist republican candidates in local and state positions. They have worked closely with Donna Oberlander, as she is running for her tenth year. Her opponent is Warner. They have been door to door promoting Donna Oberlander, as well as calling the voter registration list. They have started fundraising. They hope to sell Scotty’s Donuts. They are growing in numbers. Last year they had 4 members, now they have 12 members. They hope to get to 14 members. They tabled at activities day. They have partnered with ABLE for CU Day of Service. They hope to expand by hosting events this year, we plan to partner with the College Democrats for a couple events. They plan to partner with Slippery Rock to host a large-scale debate, hopefully with Clarion College Democrats. Adjournment A. Motion to adjourn the meeting by Treasurer Custer.
