BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE SOCCER 1982 Soccer Outlook Head coach Lou Mingrone (55-35-4) feels the Huskies are ready to regain the successes in 1982 that they enjoyed a few seasons ago. The eighth year mentor led BSC to post-season action in 1977, 1978 and 1979 before heavy graduation losses forced a rebuilding phase that has seen the boaters record marks of 5-12-1 and 7-8-1 over the past two years. With a solid combination of young, talented newcomers and skilled, experienced veterans, BSC appears ready to return to its spot among the leaders in the Pennsylvania Conference. Mingrone's charges open the 1982 campaign at home on September 8 against a new opponent, Lehigh University. The boaters face a challenging 17-game slate against many traditional rivals including defending PC champion Lock Haven State. Two major voids that Mingrone will have to fill if the Huskies are to be successful were created by the departure of striker Mark Rinkus and midfielder Ken Neu beck. A pair of players who joined the club a year ago to give BSC an "international flavor", Sunny Makoge, Cameroon, and Prosper Osei-Wusu, both gained valuable experience and, along with senior linemen Jim Byrne and Bill Sypawka, should help establish BSC's offensive attack. On the defensive end, the Huskies boast four solid performers. Senior goalie Craig Rotile, an All-PC East selection in 1981, and Eric Pettis, along with the combination of co-captains Roger Stetler and Gary Gallagher at fullback, will force opponents tc earn every goal. Another senior, Mike Keller, will be the key to the midfield line and sophomores Wayne Hilker and Ted Peckham will be counted on heavily in that area. Mingrone commented, "We appear to have the makings of a very strong squad this year. Our skill level has improved each year and we're looking forward to an exciting season. I believe we'll be fun to watch and could be an outstanding soccer team ." Head Coach DR. LOUIS MINGRONE, professor of biology, was instrumental in the return of soccer as a varsity sport at BSC six years ago. After a 20-year absence of the sport on campus , he initiated a club in 1974 that posted a 24-1 mark . In 1975, when soccer was named BSC's 14th varsity sport, Mingrone's young squad finished the campaign with a respectable 4-5- 1 record. The Huskies improved to 7-4~1 in 1976 and the following season , only the team 's third year in collegiate soccer, BSC chalked up a fine 9-3 mark and captured the eastern division crown in the Pennsylvania State Athlet ic Conference. The boaters lost to western division titlist and eventual NCAA Division Ill champion Lock Haven, 1-0, in the conference championship game . The next year Mingrone's charges completed a 10-2 campaign with one of the losses coming to Missouri-St. Louis (1-0) in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament . In 1979 the Huskies won the ECAC Southern Regional title wh ile posting a 131 record, and after losing eight of eleven starters from that team , BSC dropped to 5-12-1 in 1980, and improved to a 7-8- 1 record last season with strong expectations for the 1982 campaign . Assistant Coach H. CECIL TURBERVILLE enters his first season as BSC's assistant soccer coach . He joined the Department of Health and Physical Education in January 1966 and is currently an Associate Professor . The Alabama native has served in a variety of athletic assignments since coming to Bloomsburg including assistant football coach and trainer. He was BSC 's Director of Athletics from 1977 to June of this year. Turberville received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Alabama .
