Bloomsburg State College SOCCER 1980 Tri-Captain Toby Rank - 3 time All-Pennsylvania Conference selectee I Soccer Outlook • 1980 The uncertainty of a rebuilding season, along with cautious optimism, is present as soccer enters its sixth season at Bloomsburg State College. Eight of the eleven starters have graduated leaving Coach Lou Mingrone with a lot of holes to f i11. The initial campaign in 1975 saw the booters post a 4-5-1 mark and the very next season, 1976, BSC's first winning season at 6-5-1. A Pennsylvania Conference EasYern Division championship and an ECAC tournament bid came along with a 10-1 record in 1977, followed by a 13-1 season, a PC eastern division co-championship and an NCAA Division II tournament invite in 1978. Last season the Huskies compiled an impressive record of 13-1, another PC eastern division co-championship and an ECAC Southern Regional title. The booters outscored their opponents last season by a 74-10 margin while giving up only .71 goals per game. At season's end they were rated 8th in the NCAA Division II rankings. In the five previous seasons BSC has a combined win-loss record of 44-15-2. With all this past success and numerous state, regional and national tournaments to their credit, the Huskies are looking forward to future post season action and continued good fortune. Leading the list of returnees are tri-captains, Toby Rank, three-time All Pennsylvania Conference with a career 22 goals and 13 assists; midfielder Brian Farrell, All Pennsylvania Conference in 1979; and goalie Greg Malloch, who had a per game average of .71 goals scored against him. Other returners include: strikers-Tom Bloom, Ron Mattern, Scott McNulty, Mark Rinkus, Bill Sypawka; midfielders-Bill Bent, Greg Kane, Ken Neubeck, Luke Sakalosky; fullbacks-Mike Connell, Jeff Ehring, Gary Gallagher, Dave Mullican, Roger Stetler, Mike Wessner; goalie-Craig Rotile. Outstanding first year candidates include Mike Bartoszek, Fred Dudak, Terry Gross, Phil Hawkins, Rodney Koch, Fred McCaffrey, Lou Mickley, Joe Mitchell, Ed Secoges, Pete Sobrinski, Dave Waterman, Steve Whaley. Transfers preparing for the 1981 season are: Jim Byrne, Mike Keller, and Eric Pettis. Former Husky standouts Tim Knoster and Jim Mailey will serve as assistant coach and student assistant respectively, to aid Mingrone with the squad of 30-35 players in 1980.
