BLOOMSBURG STATE COLLEGE Senior Co-Captains Steve Eachus and Mark Bond 1978 CROSS COUNTRY OUTLOOK COACH The 1978 Bloomsburg State College cross country team, looking to better its last year 4-5 dual meet record, will be anchored by five seniors. Leading the senior group is two-time AllAmerican and co-captain Steve Eachus, who placed third in the NCAA Division II nationals in 1977 and 61 st in the Division I nationals. He is also defending champion of the Pennsylvania Conference. His time on Mansfield's 6.0 PC course last year was 29:15. Eachus also established six course records against BSC opponents in 1977, all of which have earned him the reputation of being the most prestigious cross country runner in the college's history. Other senior performers include co-captain Mark Bond, who placed 15th in the conference last year; Randy Griffith, who was forced out of last year's competition after being injured in the first meet; Aaron Johnson and Bob Kantner. The remaining returnee from last year's squad is junior Steve Johnson. Freshmen standouts are Charles Johnson, a two mile state high school champion, and Tom Groff who placed high in his districts and the state championships. As a result of cross country at BSC being determined a co-educational varsity sport under Title IX, three freshmen women, all honored in all-star teams following their 1977 seasons, are candidates for the team. Recently one of the women, Colleen Tomlinson, tied for first place among the women in a six mile race in Towanda with a time of 44 minutes. The Husky thinclads face a tough schedule and may find it difficult to improve on last year's record. Clark Boler, a member of the Health and Physical Education staff since 1968, is in his third year as cross country coach. In addition to his teaching duties, Boler is the head baseball coach and runs a fall and spring program. He was also an assistant football coach at BSC for eight years and for a number of years has been a qualified PIAA official. A native of Northport, Alabama, he was a member of the 1961 National Championship football team at the University of Alabama and a relief pitcher in baseball for the Crimson Tide. He also earned his master's degree and AA certification from that university. Boler previously was a head baseball coach, assistant basketball coach, and assistant football coach at Gadsden High School in Alabama. He has also served as a player/ coach for three years in semi-professional basketball as well as participating several years in YMCA leagues where he was quite successful.
