BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING 1987-88 The Program The biggest problem for the Huskies' men's swimming and diving program over the past few seasons has been a severe lack of depth. Secondyear head coach Dave Rider's team has made strides in the right direction and appears on the way to returning to a spot among the top teams in the Pennsylvania Conference. "We have more swimmers, and our balance will be so much better. We paid our dues a year ago, and now its time for us to go out in each meet and compete. The attitude is good, and the times are getting better and better." The 1987-88 roster includes just three seniors and has 11 performers in their first or second seasons with the squad. Rider's goal continues to be the addition of more quality swimmers and divers to enhance the overall team performance against a schedule that annually includes approximately 12 dual meets, a few invitationals, and the conference championships. Several individuals have also represented Bloomsburg at the N.C.A.A. Division II national championships in past seasons. Bloomsburg competes in the 14-member Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the nation's largest Division II conference. The men's swimming and diving program has enjoyed several good seasons, finishing among the conference's top four teams on 14 occasions in the 28 seasons since the sport was introduced at Bloomsburg in the 1959-60 season. Rider is the sixth head coach of the sport at Bloomsburg, succeeding Mary Gardner, who directed the unit for one season, and now serves as the university's athletic director. Gardner initiated the university's highly successful women's swimming and diving program and coached the squad for 12 years compiling an 88-28 record. Prior to Gardner taking over both the men's and women's teams in 1985-86, Eli McLaughlin was the head coach for 23 seasons from 1961-62 to 1984-85. Other coaches included Donald Heilman (1959-60), Bob Zeigler (1960-61), and Cecil Turberville (1969-70), who filled in for McLaughlin during a sabbatical leave. Rider likes his team's progress through the early part of his tenure. "Our people all swam' their personal best times as last season progressed, and we expect that improvement to continue. We will work to improve the schedule each year, so we'll have to have people mature quickly as we continue to build." _ _ _ The Coaching Staff _ __ Head Coach Dave Rider Dave Rider is in his second year as director of aquatics at Bloomsburg. His women's team finished 6-4 in dual meet competition, while placing 2nd in the Pennsylvania Conference and 13th in the NCAA Division II championships. Rider serves as head coach for both men's and women's swimming and diving programs and oversees the daily operations of the university's two pool facilities. Before coming to Bloomsburg, Rider served as head coach for the swimming and diving teams at Norwin High School (Pa.) for eight years. While at Norwich, he served as both men's and women's coach and established a combined dual-meet record of 159-63-3. His 1982 women's squad captured the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state championships, and his men's unit was PIAA runnerup in 1984. During Rider's tenure, 61 performers earned All-State honors and 16 competitors gained All-American status. He also established the Norwin Aqua Club, which boasted several junior and senior national qualifiers and placed performers in the United States olympic trials. The club also holds some national records. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Rider taught physical education and computer programming courses at Norwin. Previously, he taught in the North Allegheny (Pa.) School District, where he developed and administered the community's aquatic program. Rider was the school's men's swimming coach for two seasons from 1977 to 1978, compiling a 20-2 mark while handling 15 All-State and two All-American swimmers. He was the founder and coach of the Allegheny North Swim Club. From 1972 to 1974, he was on the staff at the Sewickley (Pa.) YMCA and served with the Peach Corps in Morocco from 1968 to 1971. Rider received his bachelor's degree in Near East archaeology from the University of Chicago in 1968. He was a member of the school's varsity swimming and water polo teams. His physical education certification was awarded in 1973 at Slippery Rock and his Master of Science degree in sports sciences. He is certified by the Red Cross in standard first aid and is an instructor in CPR and water safety. Rider holds memberships in the American Swimming Coaches Association, National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association, Pennsylvania Swimming Officials Association, and is a past president in the Pennsylvania High School Swimming Coaches Association. • Assistant Coach Denise Sedlacek Denise Sedlacek begins her first year as assistant coach for Bloomsburg. High School for two seasons and took a team that was winless the year prior to her arrival and posted an 11-2 record in her second season at the school. Diving Coach Larry Miller James "Larry" Miller, a native of Wormleysburg, Pa., has been the university's men's and women's diving coach for the past six seasons.
