Bloomsburg State College 1979-80 Captain Pete Dardaris with Coach Eli McLaughlin MEN'S SWIMMING DIVING LOOKING AHEAD "We face one of the most challenging tasks ever in trying to strengthen our program," states Eli McLaughlin, the head coach of the Huskies for the past 18 years. McLaughlin has senior All-American Pete Dardaris returning to lead the Huskies. He placed ninth in the NCAA Division II 200 yard backstroke and became the first Husky swimmer to break the 2:00 minute barrier with an outstanding time of 1 :59.35. Sophomore Randy Spence, who gained valuable experience competing in the Nationals on the 400 yard medley relay swimming the 100 yard butterfly leg. will be counted on quite heavily. Senior Scott Wiegand, diver, who just missed qualifying for Nationals, should have his best year along with another diver, Eric Slingerland. The junior lettermen returning are backstroker Reik Foust and diver Tom Cole, who has potential of being an outstanding board performer. Sophomores who showed great promise last season are John Conte, breaststroke, and Bill Wolfe, distance freestyle. Frank Jacoby Mclaughlin hopes will develop into a key member as a backstroker and freestyler. Talented freshmen expected to balance out the squad are Jeff Baskin (I.M.-Fr.), Tim Briddes (Fr.) and Phil Spampinato (1.M.-Fly). Others vying for position on the team are junior Jeff Ludroff (diver) and freshmen Mike Henderson (Fr.) and Glenn Miller (I .M.-Fr.) "It is going to take complete dedication from each team member for us to be competitive this season against another tough schedule," commented Mclaughlin. "Last year our team started out slow but came on exceedingly strong at the end. This year I'm convinced we will be stronger at the beginning and even stronger when the PC Championships and Nationals roll around ." Other swimmers to achieve All-America honors have been David Gibbes, 1971 NAIA Champion, 50 yard freestyle; Rich Kozicki, Jim Balchunas, Keith Torok, Doug Thran, and Steve Price. McLaughlin received both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from West Chester State Co llege and has taken additional wo rk towards his doctorate at West Virginia University . He is an associate professor in the Health and Physical Education Department and is also the Director of Aquatics at the college. McLaughlin served as varsity line coach for three years (1961-63), assistant baseball coach (1965), and head baseball coach (1976). His background both as a swimming coach and as an official has been quite extensive. McLaughlin is married to the former Patricia Repash and they have two daughters. Beth, age 20, will be a junior in college at the University of New Hampshire and Jane, age 16, will be a freshman at Gordon College, Wenham, Mass. Wayne Richards, former "AllAmerica" and team captain is assisting McLaughlin while completing a graduate program. 1979-80 SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT December 1 December 4 December 8 January 21 January 23 January 26 January 29 February 2 February 4 February 6 February 12 February 20 February 23 February 28-29/ March 1 Indiana Relays Bucknell Towson Temple East Stroudsburg West Chester Susquehanna Shippensburg Edinboro Kutztown Clarion Penn State Indiana U.
