Buckingham, Director HEAD TRACK COACH - HAROLD S. SHELLY The head coa~h of the Bloomsburg State Teachers College Huskies is Harold S. Shelly, former athletic director and basketball and track coach at Wilmington College, Wilmington, Ohio. Mr. Shelly came to Bloomsburg at the start of the 1949-50 college year Before accepting the Wilmington College position, Coach Shelly was head basketball coach at Withrow High School in Cincinnati, whore his sGhoolboy clubs compiled brilliant records. During two of his fou~ years at the Cincinnati high school, his cage teams were runilers-up for the city championship. Shelly also coached at Milford ( Ohio) High School where his track and basketball teams were considered outstanding. His Milford cage squad won 4 county champi.onships without losing a single game. His track squads placed in the first five in the State Track Meet for 3 consecutive years, including stellar performances in the weights and sprints. A graduate of Ohio Northern University where he won varsity letters in football, basketball, and track, Shelly earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. He has taught and coached twelve years in public high schools and thirteen years in college. The affable mentor has been tutoring the Husky thinclads during the past eight years. One of his charges, Frank Womer, is the co-holder of the conference pole-vault record. In addition to coaching track, Shelly is head basketball coach, and serves the gridders well as assistant coach and trainer. Sports Publicity Office Boyd F. Buckingham, Director TRACK - 1958 OUTLOOK The unfavorable weather conditions of recent weeks has caused dismay to squad hopefuls and has done nothing to soothe Coach Shelly's ulcers. The Husky mentor, a stickler for pre-season conditioning, considers the training period all important, not only in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of the ultimate perfonnance and development of individual members of the squad. Eleven lettermen answered the call for spring training; of this group, only Woody Rhoads may be prevented from competing ">ecause of an injury sustained last su.~mer, Squad strength is spotty in some events, well-manned but lacking depth in others. In the running events--sprints, middle di.stances, distance (mile and 2 mile), and hurdles--the Huskies can look for some good performances by returning veterans, but reserve strength and depth will depend on what the team gets from newcomers who are untested in college competition. This is -especially true in the sprints, where Eddie Watts is the only experienced performer, Ken Swatt, a junior, may be a contender because of his speed, but he is untested. The squad is probably strongest in the middle and long distances. In the fonner, Shelly has Ed Watts, Earl Levengood, and Ross Bartleson with Ron Wetzel, Carl and Conrad Stanitski (twins), and Norman Smith vying for a berth. The mile and two~mile runs are well-manned by letter-winners Ray Thayer, Harold Giacomini, and Matt Mensch. Dave Hetler will add some depth. Shelly will depend on Chuck Loughery and Stan Elinsky to bring home the bacon in the high hurdles, and will look to Loughery and Johnny Johnson, a freshman, to do the same job in the low hurdles. Loughery has done an outstanding job in three previous seasons, and is the team's most consistent point-getter. In the throwing weights--discus, shot, and javelin, the Huskies can depend on seven lettermen. At given times, all have looked very good, but have not demonstrated consistent perfonnance. With Gerry Wood, Tom Va:xmonsky, and Carl Sweet hurling the discus, the squad will be stronger than in any other weight-throwing division. Sweet and Wood also handle the shot, but freshman candidates will have to be developed for depth and balance. Ken Wood and Nick Volpetti are leading contenders in the javelin throw with Ron Hutteman, a freshman, showing some improvement. In the jumping events, Shelly has only two veterans, but is carefully watching some promising freshmen, Stan Elinsky heads the pole-vaulters, Woody Rhoads may not be able to compete, but Stan Hugo, a clr..:.ss B high school champ from Athens, may give the team some needed scoring punch. Ken Swatt will be back in the broad jump, but Johnny Johnson and Norm Shutovich may give the fans some pleasant surprises. Elinsky, Johnson and Shutovich will do most of the work in the high jump, and Coach Shelly is hoping that the TRACK - 1958 OUTLOOK (contd.) Sports ?ublicity Office two freshmen will develop fast enough to form a strong trio of jumpers. In an over-all view, one might say that the Huskies need some speed demons in the sprinting department--they need to develop new men in the hurdles to supplement Loughery and to replace him next year--and they need more depth and stronger performance in the shotput department. Coach Shelly has studied the schedule carefully and notes the increasing strength of a number of Husky opponents. Suffice it to say, the Husky coach does not foresee any "breathers" • ·.. . .. ................. . Buckingham, Directer HEAD BASEBALL COACH Head Coach Walter Blair will direct the destinies of the Husky diamond squad for the first time since joining the staff at Bloomsburg in September, 1955. Blair was an outstanding athlete at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, lettering in baseball, football, and basketball. Military service in the Army during World War II ended a brief stay at Temple University. While in the service, Blair played both baseball and football with the Eighth Armored Division and Camp Polk teams. In September, 1946, he entered West Chester State Teachers College to begin an outstanding career in college baseball and football competition under Coach Glenn Killinger. An able and enthusiastic competitor, Blair used his know-how to good advantage while coaching baseball and football at Neshaminy and Jenkintown. He was head footl:rall coach at Chambersburg before coming to B. S . T. C. In the fall of 1955, Blair came to Bloomsburg as assistant football coach and head wrestling coach. After two years as assistant, he took over as head mentor of the Husky gridders. He relinquished his wrestling duties this year to Russ Houk in order to take charge of the diamond squad. Blair replaces Dr. E. Paul Wagner, who resigned as baseball coach last summer because of his increasing duties in psychology and testing at the college. During the year, Blair also serves as Dean of Men. Sports Publicity Office Boyd F. Buckingham, Director BASEBALL - 1958 OUTLOOK Pitching appears to be the number one problem in building a Husky squad that will make a good showing in 5 games at home and 9 away (including a double header). Graduation, injuries, and withdrawals have created a need for a major rebuilding program with the hurlers, but a number of other key positions will have to be filled if Coach Blair is to field a well-balanced team. Missing from last season's mound staff are Bob DiPippi and Bill Freed (graduation), Ed Wojciechowski, ( commuting problems), Bob Mescan (injuries) and Paul Franklin (working conditions). As a result, a large share of the hurling chores will fall on a young and inexperienced group including Dale Franklin, Roy Shifflet, Fd Gali tsky, and Roy Quick. All have shown n a good looking motion" and their fast-ball seems adequate. Their success will depend largely on their ability to master the art of control. Behind the plate, Jonah Goobic, senior veteran of three seasons, is expected to steady the inexperience of the pitchers. Joe Panichello and Bob Rerun will provide the additional manpower in this department. Veterans John Oustrich, Joe Pendel, and Pat "Tiger" Denoy form a solid nucleus for the development of the infield corps. Letterman Bobby Rorun will also be available, along with Carl Derr, Bloomsburg High standout, and Phil Houser, Dave Stout, and Joe Cino. First base seems to be one of the "critical" spots in the infield. All posts will be manned by veterans of infield service. Much of this year's success will depend on the performance of the outfield. Despite the loss of outstanding hitters and fielders like Chuck Casper and Ed Shustack, the outfield candidates seem the strongest on the squad. Led by veteran-regular Bobby Boyle, the outfield candidates--Dan Fritz, Eddie Blackburn, Tom Stover, and Phil Lockcuff--are ready to pick up where they left off last season. Good fresrunen prospects are Walt Patynski, Bob Martin, Bill Johnson, and Fred Ballentine. Coach Blair has summarized the situation in a three-point program: 1 - Develop an inexperienced pitching corps into a staff of steady, effective hurlers. 2 - Develop an adequate first baseman to replace Ken Hill ( who has left school). 3 - Develop the hitting pc,wer of the outfield as the prime power at the plate with help from catcher Goobio and one or two key infielders. At the moment, it seems that the team's prospects will brighten as any one or all of these three developments are realized. Sports Publicity Office Boyd F.
