BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY MEN'S TENNIS 1987 1987 Spring Outlook A tough schedule, including 14 NCAA Division I schools, plus some of the best Division II and III teams, awaits Bloomsburg in the 1987 spring season. Five of the top six players from the 1986 season return, along with several freshmen and a transfer student who has already earned a spot in the starting lineup. With all this the Huskies are expecting to improve on their 15-13 record of last year. The team continued its success in the fall season with a dual match record of 3-0, extending their fall winning streak to 68 consecutive wins. Bloomsburg struggled in tournament play, however, competing against strong Division I teams in both the Bloomsburg Invitational and Navy Tournament. The Huskies finished their tournament season strong by winning seven of eight singles flights and two out of four doubles in the West Chester Tournament. The team combined for a 72.3 winning percenage in the fall, with 61 singles victories in 83 matches. Senior Tim Mitchell finished the fall with a 13-2 mark in the number one spot, while Mark Billone recored a 12-3 fall slate at number two. Scott Gibbs compiled an 8-6 mark for the fall at number three, while number four Steve Augustine finished at 8-5. Rounding out the top positions were Dean Doria, who finished with a record of 7-3 at number five, and Matt Quigley, 6-3, at six. Following the fall season, several members of the squad competed in the Rollex Small College Regional Tournament at Swathmore College. Mitchell captured the tournament by winning six matches over most of the best small college players in the east, and represented Bloomsburg and the rest of the eastern region in the finals at Sanibel Harbor, FL. Billone, Gibbs, Doria, Augustine, Quigley, Scott Glassford and Steve Looker also competed for BU. Coach Burt Reese's unit will be out to achieve three major goals as the season rolls around with the annual "southern swing" in mid-March. In addition to a "solid" dual match record, BU will be seeking to win its seventh PC title in the last nine years as well as having one or more players earn an invitiation to the NCAA Division II Championships for the eighth time in the last 10 years. Coach Burt Reese Burt Reese is entering his 19th season at the helm of the Huskies. In his previous 18 years, the team has compiled an enviable record of 263-113 for a .694 winning percentage. He is currently the regional chairman for the East Region of the NCAA Division II Tennis Committee. He is also an active member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association. In the Pennsylvania Conference, Reese has coached 41 singles and doubles champions and five of the last 10 seasons has been choosen as the PC "Coach of the Year." In 1981, he was selected a~ che Central Pennsylvania Tennis Association "Coach of the Year." In 1983, he added another credential to his long list of accomplishments when Dave Superdock and Marty Coyne became Bloomsburg's first tennis All-Americans. Reese, a native of Taylor, Pa., earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees at East Stroudsburg State College where he co-captained the tennis and basketball teams. While working on his master's degree, he helped coach the tennis and basketball teams as a graduate assistant. Then he joined the faculty at Old Forge High School, where he was an assistant football and basketball coach. He moved on to Abington Heights High School and served as athletic director and initiated and coached varsity tennis to a 45-6 record before coming to Bloomsburg. He has been ranked among the top ten singles players in the Middle ~ Tennis Association and was a member of the top three doubles teams severai times in the past. _ _ _ _ Player Profiles _ _ __ Steve Augustine - Senior Altoona, PA Defending PSAC #3 singles champion Fall Record: 8-5 Career Record: 43-36 Major: Business Administration Scott Gibbs - Senior Bellport, NY #12 in nation (doubles! #18 in East (singles!
