In spite of their relative inexperience, the squad members, by their enthusiasm and application, turned in a 4-1-1 record. In the year that followed, they logged 5 wins and 2 losses. In the Spring of 1961, four regulars earned diplomas, and Coach Satz was left with only two lettermen-Captain John Y urkel and Joe Rado. As a result, the continuation of the good record of the first two years seemed almost impossible for the coming season. Yurgel played 4 years of golf while attending high school and competed in two PIAA meets in District 2. Rado started digging divots and caddying at the Berwick Country Club at the age of 11. Nelson Swarts was a member of the Bloomsburg High School team, but has never competed in intercollegiate contests. Jeff Smith has been caddying and golfing for nearly a decade. He has caddied for Art Wall, Jr. and Al Besselink at the Valley Country Club at Hazleton. George Masich has 8 years of experience as a caddy, and has participated in the Pennsylvania State Junior Championship matches, the State High School Championship matches, the Junior Anthracite Open, and a number of local Jaycee Tournaments. Perhaps the most experienced member of the squad is George Gensemer, a freshman, who started his golfing care'i r while in high school. He won the Mt. Union Pro-Am Tournament in 1955, played 4 times in the Pennsylvania Open at Hershey, competed 3 years in the Reading Open, won the Eaglesmere Tournment of Frosty Valley Club members with a 69 in 1961, won the President's Cup at the Bloomsburg Country Club in 1957, and took the Harry Blom Invitational Tournament at the Bloomsburg Country Club in 1961. Although the group, in general, lacks intercollegiate experience, there seems to be a good supply of potential, and the Husky Golfers re eagerly anticipating their practice sessions and home conference contests on the scenic slopes of the Bloomsburg Country Club. MARTIN A. SATZ - VARSITY GOLF COACH When Coach Satz joined the Bloomsburg State CoUege faculty in September, 1958, his prime concern was that of teaching psychology and conducting psychological testing. A year and a half later, when golf was added to the list of varsity intercollegiate sports at Bloomsburg, he accepted the job of coaching a sport he has played and enjoyed for many years. Dr. Satz earned the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at the University of Minnesota and the Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Washington. He started playing golf while serving as a caddy, and as caddy for the club "pro", Satz learned the techniques and received many valuable insights into the game. Of this knowledge and experience, he sometimes says, "I can use it far more effectively in teaching others than I can in applying it to my own game." He is also quick to point out that golf has a considerable carry-over value, since it is the type of athletic activity a student can and will pursue for many years after graduation. ********** GOLF SCHEDULE 1962 April 10--East Stroudsburg A 1 :00 April 12-Lycoming and Lock Haven H 1:00 April 14-Shippensburg A 1:00 April 27-Shippensburg H 1:00 April 30-Lock Haven A 1 :00 May 3-Mansfield A 1 :30 May 7-State Meet A 1 :00 May 10-King's College
