The 10 students and two staff and faculty members took part in a Habitat for Humanity project, March 6-13, building floors, walls and the roof, and installing doors and windows. Joining the Edinboro contingent were 11 students from Eureka College in Illinois, and two students from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. Not only did the volunteers give up their free time to work on the project, each one chipped in or raised $150 to help defray the cost of building materials. They were housed in the basement of the St. Andrew Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, and area churches provided most of their meals. The University provided two vans for the trip and two advisers. The residence life staff organized the trip and the Student Government Association contributed $500. Beth Shick, an Edinboro University residence hall coordinator, said students got a lot out of working on the project for a good cause. “It was an incredible experience to watch the house come up in front of our eyes,” said Shick. Wflien the students arrived on the first day, only part of the foundation was in place. By the end of the week the roof and exterior walls of the house were up and some of the interior was taking shape. Laura Paul, a senior from Edinboro, was one of the assistant residence hall coordinators who organized the trip. She said all of the students took turns in most facets of the construction digging, nailing, sawing and even laying down the concrete foundation. -more- HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME, Continued Page 2 Working alongside with them was the single mother who would be moving into the house. “The best part was knowing you were down there helping someone,” said Paul. The presidents of Edinboro University of Peimsylvania, Mercyhurst College, and officials from Allegheny College join with representatives of the Red Cross and the Institute to announce the start of Project HERO and light a unity candle to signify the coalition’s goal of bringing together all of northwestern Pennsylvania in a common humanitarian effort. Project HERO will aid Kosovar refugees directly in the Kosovar region by raising funds for the Red Cross’s international relief efforts. HERO will also help the Kosovar refugees who come to the Erie area by raising money and supplies for the International Institute. The two relief agencies were chosen to help refugees both locally and abroad, and give contributors a choice of where they would like their funds to go. ■ The initial goal of Project HERO is to raise $50,000, but the coalition believes as interest in the cause grows, significantly more money will be raised. Contributors will be asked to make their donations directly by check to either the Red Cross or the International Institute, and to write “Project HERO” in the memo section of the check. Each partner will be encouraged to stage or support fund-raising events of their own choosing. For example, the colleges and universities will be asking their student organizations to develop fund-raising events in their campus communities. A third way to support Project HERO is through collection canisters. The coalition hopes to place canisters at dozens of public locations around the region where on-the-spot cash contributions can be made. While cash donations are the best way to support Project HERO, the International Institute is in urgent need of other support as well. I think it’s really important that we start exploring ways to connect to colleges [and] to the outside world which will give us our best chance not only of positioning our best kids, but actually getting our kids who might not be tempted to go on to school to think about that and to see that they can be successful.” -more- A member of the State System of Higher Education QUAKER VALLEY AGREEMENT, Continued Page 2 Pogue said the program is beneficial because it gives students early access to the college experience. “It is also important for our professors to stay in touch with high schools,” he said. “They, too, are learning what is taking place. Early connections really provide an opportunity for us to have access to the very best students produced by our high schools. Some 18 students fi-om this high school have graduated fi-om Edinboro in the past ten years. We can only look to increase those numbers. This is an exciting time for us and we are anxious to get started.” Zahorchak, a 1937 Edinboro graduate and honorary lifetime member of the University’s Alumni Association, has been a long-time proponent of bringing the two schools together. “Our alumni have a responsibility to guide some of these students to Edinboro because we have a fine, fine program.” This signing brings to nine the number of similar articulation agreements Edinboro has made with area school districts. The others include Conneaut, Cony, Crawford Central, Fairview, General McLane, McDowell High School, Northwestern and Wattsburg. -30BKP: csw Officials of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and the Quaker Valley School District sign an articulation agreement allowing Quaker Valley students to earn Edinboro credits while still in high school. Signing are Quaker Valley Superintendent R. Gerard Longo, former school board president and Edinboro alumnus Michael Zahorchak, Edinboro President Frank G. Pogue, Edinboro Associate Vice President Donald Dilmore, and Quaker Valley High School President Jeanne Johnson. Pogue signed articulation agreements with two school districts last week that will make it easier for graduates of those districts to attend Edinboro. Pogue signed one agreement with the Quaker Valley School District in Sewickley, near Pittsburgh, on Tuesday, June 8, and the second agreement was finalized on Friday, June 11 with the Northwestern School District in Albion. Both agreements allow students to earn college credits by completing accelerated or advance placement courses. Graduates of Northwestern and Quaker Valley who successfully complete honors courses in English, mathematics and science will receive credit for Edinboro courses in college writing skills, precalculus and introduction to biology. Signing the agreement for Quaker Valley were Superintendent R. Gerard Longo, Principal Jeanne Johnson and former school board president and Edinboro alumnus Michael Zahorchak. The Northwestern agreement was signed by Superintendent Lynn Corder and Principal Joseph Meako. Longo, a 1965 Edinboro graduate and 1994 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, said the agreement is an important opportunity for the district. “To be able to establish a relationship with Edinboro University is a matter of personal pride.” “The line between high schools and colleges is beginning to blur,” said Johnson. “You have many students.. .who have taken advantage of the enormous opportunities outside the wall of a high school. Early connections really provide an opportimity for us to have access to the very best students produced by our high schools.” Northwestern Superintendent Corder said parents who realize its potential benefits have eagerly anticipated the agreement. “I think it is an excellent thing,” he said. “The University has been really cooperative, and we appreciate that.” Pogue said the agreement with Northwestern makes a lot of sense because of the close proximity to each other and the number of students who have matriculated to Edinboro. “Over the last ten years we have admitted some 400 Northwestern graduates,” said Pogue. “Nearly half have graduated and a significant number of those are still enrolled. Some 24 graduates will be coming to the University this fall, and we have already identified six who will benefit from this arrangement.” These two signings bring to nine the number of similar articulation agreements Edinboro has signed with area school districts. The others include Conneaut, Corry, Crawford Central, Fairview, General McLane, McDowell High School, and Wattsburg. -30BKP: csw EDINBORO UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA William A. Institute Executive Director Michael Mumock said beds and storage space are especially needed. “We need bed frames as well as mattresses,” said Mumock, “and we need some additional room to store them.” Project HERO (Humanitarian Emergency Relief Operation) is a coalition of Allegheny College, Edinboro University of Peimsylvania and Mercyhurst College which formed to raise money for the Kosovar refugees through the Greater Erie County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the International Institute. Mumock said funds are also needed immediately to purchase used beds when donated beds are not available. Even with cash contributions, there may not be enough used beds on the market and new beds are prohibitively expensive. That is why Project HERO is making a public appeal. What makes the appeal critical is a number of refugee families may be arriving at the same time. Anyone wishing to make a contribution of supplies may contact the International Institute at 517 East 26"' Street, Erie, PA 16504-2803, or call (814) 452-3935. Cash donations may be sent to the Institute or the Greater Erie Chapter of the American Red Cross, 4961 Pittsburgh Avenue, Erie, PA 16509, or call (814) 833-0942. Be sure to designate “Project HERO” on the contribution. -30BKP: jms A member of the State System of Higher Education EDINBORO UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA Office of Public Relations and Publications Edinboro, PA 16444 (814) 732-2745 or 2929 Fax (814) 732-2621 June 30, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: EDINBORO UNIVERSITY HONORS SEVEN ALUMNI Seven Edinboro University of Pennsylvania graduates were recently named distinguished alumni at a special luncheon ceremony highlighting the school’s 1999 Alumni Reunion Weekend. After working as a document classification specialist and writer/editor for the Firearms Training Unit, she was transferred in 1985 to the FBI Academy’s Firearms Training Unit to assume responsibility for the statistical analysis of FBI shooting incidents. After a 1986 Miami shooting incident in which several FBI agents were killed and woimded, Boord’s analysis served as the foundation upon which the FBI modified firearms training tactics and upgraded the weaponry issued to special agents. In 1988 she was appointed to the faculty of the FBI Academy as a senior instructional systems specialist, and in 1996 was transferred to the FBI’s National Security Division where she is responsible for building and managing the Bureau’s distance learning program. She now serves as the FBI’s leading distance learning expert and provides consultation to numerous domestic and foreign government agencies, law enforcement organizations and branches of the military. Sociologist and professor Dr. CHARLES BABBITT, ’63, started his teaching career at Northwestern High School in Albion, Pa., where he also coached football. After teaching at Buffalo’s Canisius College, Erie County Community College in Williamsville, N.Y., and summers at Penn State-Behrend, he returned to Edinboro in 1971 as an assistant professor of sociology. He has since served on and chaired countless committees and boards, provided consultant work, and served as chair of Edinboro’s department of sociology/anthropology/social work and sociology program director. He has held visiting professor and scholar appointments in Austria, China, Pakistan, Taiwan, the University of California at Berkeley, and at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. Two of Gentile’s four sons, Mike and Matt, are employed at Keystone. Both are Edinboro alumni and, like their father, were star football players. Former Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year DOROTHY JEAN BENISH POTTER, ’69, taught students from kindergarten through college in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia before accepting the position of director of early childhood education for the state of West Virginia in 1971. After two months of national-level service as deputy assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education, she was asked by President Ronald Reagan to serve as acting assistant secretary of education, a post she held for two years. In a ten-year period, she went from being a kindergarten teacher to managing all of the nation’s elementary and secondary schools. Today, she finds great joy in creating a variety of children’s learning tools and writing books. The recipient of the 1999 Distinguished Alumni Award for Public Service is DAVID SHENEMAN, ’64, who has dedicated his professional life to the Bradford (Pa.) Area School District. The students are working with Pam Roberts at Active Aging to attract senior citizens from Ohio, New York, West Virginia and Canada to the Lake Erie region. The Department of Aging made a $15,000 grant available to promote tourism for seniors in a part of the state which ranks sixth in attracting tourist dollars. Roberts, a 1981 graduate of Edinboro, called upon Edinboro marketing professor Sherry Reynolds to seek her assistance in developing a marketing plan especially targeted for out-ofstate senior citizens. Reynolds selected the four Edinboro students - Bob Skiddle of Amherst, Ohio; Kyra Sherba of Pittsburgh; Tim Cheers of Franklin; and Junia Isiminger of Canadohta Lake - to serve as interns at Active Aging. Within a few weeks the four put together a comprehensive integrated marketing plan they hope will lure thousands of visitors to the area. Reynolds said the interns created a trade show booth, logo, brochures and are even in the process of designing a website. Earlier this month they attended the Senority Expo in Monroeville, Pa., and will soon distribute 100,000 tourism materials touting the Lake Erie region to some 750 senior centers in neighboring states and Canada. In August they will attend the Pennsylvania Senior Center Conferences in State College. For more information on the project, contact Pam Roberts at Active Aging at 1034 Park Avenue in Meadville, or call (814) 336-1792. -30BKP: jms A member of the State System of Higher Education ' r- IT' July 7, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: LOCAL STUDENT RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP Edinboro University of Pennsylvania has announced that Joseph Capezzuto, West Alexander, is the recipient of the Frank G.
