LOCAL STUDENT RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania has announced that Joe Capezzuto, West Alexander,
was recently named the recipient of the Frank G. Pogue Scholarship.
This scholarship was created in recognition of Dr. Pogue’s inauguration as Edinboro
University’s 15* president and the celebration of the University’s 140* anniversary.
The scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman or upperclass student who meets all
of the criteria required to participate in the Edinboro University Honors Program. The student
must be enrolled full time. This prestigious scholarship is renewable through the completion of
128 credits provided the student maintains an overall cumulative Q.P.A. of 3.30 or better.
Financial need is not a factor.

activities, and leadership qualities, the annual scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

The scholarship program was created by Edinboro University’s Alumni Association
Board of Directors with unrestricted annual fund gifts. It is part of a plan to augment the student

senior Traci Betlan at the university’s fourth annual Torch Night Ceremony. Introduced by
Pogue in 1997 and held on the eve of the spring commencement, the symbolic torch lighting
ceremony represents the passing of the torch of leadership from the graduating class to members
of the student body who will emerge as the campus leaders or “torch bearers” of tomorrow. The
spring Torch Night complements the Candle Lighting Ceremony held when school opens each

EDINBORO’S JUSTINA BARON CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
Justina J. Baron, the former Edinboro University of Pennsylvania librarian and one of the
school’s best-known and most-loved alumnae, celebrated her 100*** birthday on June 17,2000.
The celebration took place among family and friends at Saint Mary’s Home of Erie,
where she has resided since 1991.
A delegation of Edinboro University officials joined the birthday celebration and
presented her with a Royal Stewart tartan “Fighting Scots” blanket.
A 1917 graduate of the Edinboro State Normal School, Baron began her career in
education teaching all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Four years later, she took an
apprentice course at the Erie Public Library and received her diploma from the Carnegie Library
School.
In 1925, she joined the faculty of the Erie Branch of Edinboro State Normal School, and
the same year, completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. She later earned
a master’s degree in library science from the University of Michigan. When the Erie Branch
closed in 1931 during the Depression, she was appointed assistant librarian and cataloger on the
Edinboro campus and was later placed in charge of acquisitions. She retired in 1965.
In 1977, one year after its construction, Edinboro University’s campus library - the
largest in northwestern Pennsylvania - was named the Baron-Fomess Library by the school s
trustees in honor of Justina Baron and the late Mildred Fomess, two women who dedicated their
lives to serving Edinboro students as librarians.

Baron remained active in several organizations after retirement. For many years, she was
the primary force behind Edinboro’s Alumni Association, volimteering her time to maintain
alumni lists and organizing the annual alumni reunion limcheon and other special events. A
tradition at the reunion limcheon for many years was her “calling of the classes,” where she
called by class year the names of all the Edinboro alumni in attendance.
She was recognized by the Alumni Association as a Distinguished Alumna of the
University in 1977, and, in 1986, was named the first honorary lifetime member of the Alumni
Board of Directors.
The Justina J. Baron Scholarship Fund was established in her honor in 1982. The
scholarship is awarded each year to a son, daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew of an Edinboro
graduate.
Baron was also a very accomplished photographer and donated her collection of more
than 4,000 slides to the Baron-Fomess Library. The library has commemorated her 100*^
birthday by initiating a project to digitize the slides and make them available over the Internet.

The Edinboro University Summer Academy for the Advancement of Young
Women in Computer Science continues today through Thursday with a variety of
academic and social activities.
Today, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, students will learn how to program with the help
of virtual robot Kool Karel and will participate in an introduction to Visual BASIC from
1:30 to 4 p.m.
Other sessions will offer computer anatomy, development using Visual BASIC,
and an introduction to Microsoft office and customization.

EDINBORO’S BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM
RECEIVES ACCREDITATION
The department of business administration and economics at Edinboro University of
Peimsylvania has received accreditation from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools
and Programs (ACBSP). The ACBSP accreditation is for the University’s associate and bachelor
of science degrees in business administration. Edinboro also offers a bachelor’s degree in
economics.
“Accreditation ensures the currency of our faculty and programs,” said department chair
Michael Hannan. “We are cons^tly updating and enhancing our programs to match the
changing needs of employers and maximize the employability of our graduates.”
The department is one of the largest in the University with more than 500 majors and 15
faculty. The bachelor’s degree in business offers concentrations in accounting, comprehensive
business administration, financial services and marketing. All students in both programs take
courses in accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, business law and
information resource management.
Hannan noted that accreditation is just the most recent of several developments within
the department. Two years ago, the Certified Financial Plaimer Board of Standards granted
registration to Edinboro’s financial services concentration, making it one ofjust six such
programs in the state. Also, the department recently began offering a graduate certificate in
public accounting for those wishing to become a certified public accountant or enhance thenprofessional credentials in accounting.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will be hosting two summer computer
camps this month.
The first camp, Tech Prep Computer Camp, is sponsored by the Northwest TriCounty Intermediate Unit and will be held June 20 - 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students
in grades 10 and 11 who are enrolled in the Business/Information/Computer Technology
Tri-County Tech Prep programs will participate in a variety of computer science sessions
and demonstrations. A presentation on career opportunities in business and computer
science, an admissions presentation and a visit to our planetarium will also be held. Math
and computer science professor Joseph Molnar will present the computer science sessions
each day and faculty from art, business administration and economics, and physics will
host presentations throughout the three days.
The second camp, Edinboro Summer Academy for the Advancement of Young
Women in Computer Science, is sponsored by GTE and will be held June 26-29. Young
women in grades 8, 9 and 10 from the tri-county area who have an interest in pursuing a
career in the area of computer science or management information systems will
participate in a variety of computer sessions and many other activities. They will also

JUNE 1, 2, IN WATERFORD AND ERIE
Lafayette Commemorative Days, a Together 2000 millennium event marking the 175*
anniversary of the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to Erie and Waterford in 1825, will be
celebrated with special events in both places on June 1 and 2.

Lafayette’s visit to the area in 1825 was part of a multi-month tour of America taken at
the invitation of President John Quincy Adams to acknowledge Lafayette’s enormous
contribution to the creation of the United States. He was en route from Buffalo to Pittsburgh
when he visited Waterford and Erie.
Lafayette Commemorative Days is an official event of Together 2000, Erie’s community
celebration to mark the millennium. The Erie County Millennium Commission, composed of
community leaders led by Edinboro University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Frank Pogue, is
coordinating the city’s and county’s year-long celebration.

guest speaker at Seneca’s 20“’ Annual Scholarship Recognition Night. More than 300 Seneca
High students were presented certificates for their academic achievements. In his remarks, Pogue
urged the students “to continue to take pride in your academic accomplishments, in your school,
in your community and in your world,” and not to listen, said Pogue “to anyone who may tell
you that it s not cool to do well in school.” Pogue noted also that Seneca’s principal, assistant
principal and a guidance counselor, as well as the Wattsburg School District’s superintendent
and assistant superintendent, were Edinboro University graduates. “In all, the five earned 12
degrees and certifications at Edinboro,” Pogue said.

EDINBORO’S JUSTINA BARON TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS ON JUNE 17
Justina J. Baron, the former Edinboro University of Pennsylvania librarian and one of the
school’s best-known and most-loved alumnae, will celebrate her 100* birthday on June 17, 2000.
The celebration will take place at noon on Saturday, June 17, at Saint Mary’s Home of
Erie, 607 East 26* Street.
Helping her celebrate her 100* year with greetings and gifts will be a party of Edinboro
University and Alumni Association officials headed by University President Dr. Frank G. Pogue.
A 1917 graduate of the Edinboro State Normal School, Baron began her career in
education teaching all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Four years later, she took an
apprentice course at the Erie Public Library and received her diploma from the Carnegie Library
School.
In 1925, she joined the faculty of the Erie Branch of Edinboro State Normal School, and
the same year, completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. She later earned
a master’s degree in library science from the University of Michigan. When the Erie Branch
closed in 1931 during the Depression, she was appointed assistant librarian and cataloger on the
Edinboro campus and was later placed in charge of acquisitions. She retired in 1965.
In 1977, one year after its construction, Edinboro University’s campus library - the
largest in northwestern Pennsylvania - was named the Baron-Fomess Library by the school’s
trustees in honor of Justina Baron and,the late Mildred Fomess, two women who dedicated their
lives to serving Edinboro students as librarians.

Baron remained active in several organizations after retirement. For many years, she was
the primary force behind Edinboro’s Alumni Association, volunteering her time to maintain
alumni lists and organizing the annual alumni reunion luncheon and other special events. A
tradition at the reunion luncheon for many years was her “calling of the classes,” where she
called by class year the names of all the Edinboro alumni in attendance.
She was recognized by the Alumni Association as a Distinguished Alrnnna of the
University in 1977, and, in 1986, was named the first honorary lifetime member of the Alumni
Board of Directors.
The Justina J. Baron Scholarship Fund was established in her honor in 1982. The
scholarship is awarded each year to a son, daughter, grandchild, niece or nephew of an Edinboro
graduate.
Baron was also a very accomplished photographer and donated her collection of more
than 4,000 slides to the Baron-Fomess Library. The library has commemorated her 100*
birthday by initiating a project to digitize the slides and make them available over the Internet.
Baron has resided at Saint Mary’s Home of Erie since 1991.

LOCAL STUDENT ENTERS EDINBORO UNIVERSITY UNDER DUAL
ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS
Dan Dell, a recent graduate from General McLane High School, will enroll in
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania’s manufacturing engineering technology (MET)
program this fall with 16 credits already obtained through courses taken in high school.
Dell earned the credits by meeting the necessary requirements of the MET articulation
agreement and the academic articulation agreement General McLane has with Edinoro
University.
Carefully mapping out his educational path at an early age, Dell met with high
school guidance counselor Gary Astorino before entering ninth grade to discuss his
interest in the tooling and machining field. Astorino explained the MET articulation
agreement with Edinboro University and informed Dell of the importance in taking the
high level math and science classes offered at General McLane.
Dell and his parents also met with Edinboro University physics and technology
professor Pete Mathews who explained how specific high school courses could be applied
toward a two-year associate degree in manufacturing engineering technology.
“Dan was tom between going to Vo-Tech for tool and die or staying at the high
school and taking a college bound program,” said Dell’s mother, Julie. “The fact that Dan
stayed at the high school enabled him to take the higher level math and science courses
that are very important to this program.”

Under the MET articulation agreement, Dell received 12 credits for Edinboro
courses in Manufacturing Processes I, Technical Drawing I, Computer Aided Drafting
and Introduction to Robotics by taking the necessary courses outlined in the articulation
agreement at General McLane. He also received 4 credits for college writing skills by
taking accelerated and advanced placement level courses English at General McLane.
By planning early, Dell was able to get a head start on his college degree while in
high school. That allowed Dell to build a strong foundation for his future studies at
Edinboro University.
After earning his associate degree at Edinboro University, Dell hopes to further
his education at the Rochester Institute of Technology which accepts students from
Edinboro’s MET program, allowing them to enroll as a junior in their manufacturing
program.

JUDITH ANN PIELEMEIER APPOINTED AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Frank Pogue has announced the
appointment of Judith Ann Pielemeier to the position of assistant vice president for development
and marketing at the University. Her appointment comes at the conclusion of a six-month
national search and will become effective on July 16.
Pielemeier comes to Edinboro from Coming Community College in Coming, N.Y.,
where she has served since 1995 as the college’s director of institutional advancement and
executive director of its development foundation.
Prior to that, she was the director of individual giving, major gifts and the annual
campaign at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
“Judith brings a wealth of experience and ability to Edinboro’s total advancement
program,” said Pogue. “She is well grounded in alumni and foimdation relations, annual funds,
major and special gifts, and most importantly, capital campaigns, as we are now in the planning
stages for what will be only the second major capital campaign in Edinboro university’s 144-year
history.”
Pielemeier holds a bachelor of arts degree from California State University at Long
Beach.
Pielemeier began her career in fund raising at Georgetown University in Washington as
the assistant director of the annual fund, where she was involved with planning and coordinating
volunteer activities, phonathons and major giving programs.

From 1975 to 1979, she was the associate director of the Seattle (Wash.) University
Alumni Association, and later served briefly as director of alumni relations and the aimual fund
at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Pielemeier then joined the advancement staff at Youngstown State University in Ohio,
where she served as executive director of the Alumni Association until 1984, and from there,
moved to Salisbury (Md.) State University to the post of executive director of alumni relations
and the annual fund, where she served until 1992 and accepted the assignment at Marietta
College.

DOROTHY HARDIMON BODY APPOINTED AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Frank Pogue has announced the
appointment of Dorothy Hardimon Body as assistant vice president for student financial support and
services at the University. Her appointment comes at the conclusion of a six-month national search
and will become effective on July 16.
Currently teaching in Wicomico, Md., schools, she comes to Edinboro from Mardela
Springs, Md.
“Dorothy Body’s expertise and impressive background in student financial aid
administration will enhance Edinboro University’s enrollment and retention objectives,” Pogue
said. “Her proven ability as an administrator and team leader will make her a most welcome new
member of the Edinboro Family. Another plus is the good work she’s done in previous positions
with NCAA financial aid regulations and requirements.”
Body earned her undergraduate degree and a master’s in public administration from
Governors State University in University Park, 111.
She began her career as a financial aid adviser at her alma mater, and later served briefly
as associate director of financial aid at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.
In 1989, Body accepted the director of financial aid position at the University of Maryland
Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md., and in 1999, served in a similar position at Tuskegee
University in Alabama.
Body lists among her professional accomplishments her four-year term as a member of the
NCAA Division II Committee on Financial Aid, her 1997 membership on the U.S. Dept, of
Education Focus Group on Financial Aid Training Needs, and her 1995-97 appointment as Senior
Woman Administrator for Intercollegiate Athletics.
She was the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Outstanding Woman Honoree in 1996.

LATINO LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with GE Transportation Systems,
GE Lighting and the GE Hispanic Forum chapters of Erie and Cleveland, will host the third
aimual Latino Leadership Development Program, June 11-16, on the Edinboro University
campus and at GE’s Erie Plant.
The residential program will bring some 80 Latino high school students from the greater
Erie area, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Philadelphia to Edinboro and Erie for a week of activities
focusing on increasing academic and leadership skills, positive self-image, and professional
career awareness. Particular emphasis will be placed on improving skills in math and science, as
well as increasing the number of Latino students attending college.
The Latino Leadership Development Program is an official event of Together 2000,
Erie’s community celebration to mark the millennium. The Erie County Millennium

GE Transportation Systems (GETS), East Lake Road, Erie. The GETS team is hosting a weeklong design competition among the students to build a “mouse trap vehicle,” giving them the
opportunity to work as a team toward a common goal using the skills learned in the classroom, as
well as their interpersonal and communication skills. Competing teams will present their final
designs and marketing strategies to GETS judges beginning at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 16, in the

BALDWIN APPOINTED DEAN OF EDUCATION AT EDINBORO UNIVERSITY
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Frank G. Pogue has announced
the appointment of R. Scott Baldwin, Ph.D., as the University’s dean of education, effective
July 15. Baldwin’s appointment comes at the conclusion of a national search conducted
over the past six months.
Baldwin is the former dean of the School of Education and Graduate Studies at
Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., a position he has held since 1996. Adams State is a
federally-designated minority institution in rural Colorado.
“Scott Baldwin will bring to Edinboro a wealth and range of experiences that are
critical to the many important initiatives underway in the University’s School of Education
- including our accreditation efforts with the National Council for Accreditation of
Teacher Education,” said Pogue. “As a graduate of Millersville University of Pennsylvania,
he knows the State System of Higher Education and he knows Pennsylvania and our
strengths and needs; we are proud to have attracted a candidate of Dr. Baldwin’s caliber.”
Baldwin earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Millersville University in 1970,
a master’s degree in linguistics from Ohio University in 1973, and his doctorate in 1976,
also from Ohio University, in the interdisciplinary fields of education, English and
linguistics. While earning his doctorate there as Ohio University’s first interdisciplinary
Ph.D. student, he was also a teaching assistant in the College of Education.
His teaching career began in Ltocaster, Pa., in 1970, where he taught English and
reading at Reynolds Junior High School, and reading in the Upward Bound program at
Franklin and Marshall College. Post-doctoral assignments have included appointments as

an assistant professor of teacher education and coordinator of the graduate reading
program at the University of Tulsa, and 12 years at the University of Miami as an associate
professor of educational psychology, professor of teaching and learning, assistant provost,
and chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning.
As dean of the School of Education and Graduate Studies at Adams State College,
Baldwin’s responsibilities included the departments of Exercise Physiology and Leisure
Science, Psychology and Counseling, and Teacher Education. The school offers both
bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with 11 master’s programs offered off-campus as part of
the college’s mission in rural Colorado.
Baldwin is the author of numerous books, computer software, refereed articles and
other publications on reading, literacy, linguistics and bilingual education, as well as the
writer of a number of successfully-funded grants.

EDINBORO TO HONOR ALUMNI AT ANNUAL REUNION WEEKEND
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and its Alumni Association will host its first
reunion weekend of the 2U‘ century on Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10, with a series of
events to honor graduating classes from 1930 to 1970, and extend special congratulations to the
class of 1950, which is celebrating its 50* year since graduation.
Festivities begin on Friday afternoon with a 4 p.m. picnic at the Alumni House on
Meadville Street, followed by dessert at Edinboro’s legendary Crossroads Dinor. A concert by
the Adult Band Camp on the Memorial Auditorium lawn follows at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s events begin at 11 a.m. with President Frank Pogue’s reunion reception for the
class of 1950 in Van Houten Dining Hall’s President’s Suite.
Seating for the annual alumni reunion luncheon begins at noon on Saturday. The 2000
Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented at the luncheon. The year’s recipients are: in
arts, Dan Niebauer ’72 and ’76; in business and industry, Dalph McNeil ’69; in education. Dr.
Victoria Bastecki-Perez ’87, Dr. William Henk ’75 and ’76, and Dr. Irvin Solomon ’71 and ’73;
in natural science, Nancy Collop, M.D., ’80; and in public service, Paul Kohut, D.O., ’86.
Reunion weekend concludes Saturday evening with a 6:30 p.m. reception at the Alumni
House and a 7 p.m. presentation by Certified Handwriting Analyst Jeannette Kubacki ’69, ’72,
’77 and ’78.
