A. B# CHAMPLAIN principal Entomologist ABC:ber incl* j-ij. \LidajLxfcjb' i\io* juj," "fuf rmuiib to the Cij^ted States ^areau of Entomolo^^ Washington, D.C* PEMNSYLVMIA DEPARTf.ENT OF AGRICULTUIE • BUREAU CF PLMT DJDUSTRY HARRISBURG M.Cir.117 200*-46 TERMITES Although these insects are often referred to as ^’white ants" they are not true Ants, and may be distinguishsd from true ants by a difference in body structure. The riddle of the body of ants is very much restricted, T^hile the bodies of termites are restricted very little and look much like small roaches. They are capable of much more damage than ants and are more difficult to control. Wood may be damaged by several other insects and their damage may be confused vdth termites. Most of the other wood feeders either make holes in the surface of the v\TOod or throT\T out sawdust-like castings. Termites'seldom have openings to the outside and sawdust castings are never in evidence, but a material resembling wood putty is evident on^both the inside and outside of the infested wood. The damage this moisture. They may build die Iter tubes from the ground over sides of founda tion to enable them'to reach the wood above and at the same time maintain 'this vital moisture supply. CCNTROL; find the nesting place in the soil and treat the area with one of -tlie follovdng: (1) A mixture of one part of coal tar creosote and -three parts of lightweight fuel oil. Use at the rate of four ga' Ions to ten lineal feet along a foundation in a ditch thirty inches deep. Apply additional materia.1 as the trench is filled. Or, (2) Orthodichlorobenzene at the rate of two gallons to ten lineal feet. This ma-berial may be applied in two inch crovfbar holes put down every fifteen inches and thirty inches deep. In reference to the insecticide DDT for teunites,it has been recommended that five percent of DDT in kerosene solution or in emulsion can be uSed as a soil poison in the same manner as mentioned for other material. Thus used, DDT has been found to be effective as a soil poison for more than two seasons. Treatments with DDT in the soil at "the emerging point of termites or the nesting area, may be an effective control. Further suggestions for repair and control: (1) Close all avenues' -between-ground~and=t>he--ma-fc©-ria^<'to^Jae- prcxtented l^Lris^osingibarEie-ra. of—me,t!5l^— concrete or chemically treated vrood; (2) Remove all structural unsound wood and replace with concrete ox* chemically treated wod (wood impregnated vith creosote or chro’mated zinc chloride under pressure). After treatment, make frequent in spections for signs of activity, searching for the covered passage-Y^ays over the face of new concrete vrork or other barriers « PRETOITIONS: (1) Keep all voodwork from contact vnth the ground. (2) Support un treated wood above ground on a barrier of concrete or masonry laid in cement mortar, (3) Fill'cracks in concrete, masonry walls, floors, and foundations with cement mortar, (4) Maintain a'metal shield as a barrier below vraod to be insulated from ground vjhen necessary, (5) Provide adequate drainage of soil beneath and around any structures susceptible to termite attack. There are several very Comprehensive publications on the subject of termites published by the Government Printing Office* Among these are "Prevent ing Damage by Termites or'lWiite Ants" (Farmers* Bulletins 1472) and "Termites" in Buildings" (Leaflet No, 31)• For information regarding these publications, write to the United States Bureau of Entomology, Washington, D.C,
