He entered the coaching ranks six years ago and has won every major wrestling title with his triumphs at the Goodwill Games (1985) in Moscow and the World Championships (1986) in Budapest, Hungary. In 1987, Bruce took the Bronze medal at the World Championships in Spain, then went on to capture the silver the past two years. Bruce assumed the job of head coach of the Fighting Scot wrestling program in October 1990 after the resignation of Mike DeAnna. The 29-year-old 270-pounder won the first American super heavyweight gold medal since 1924 at the 1984 Olympic Games in Lx)s Angeles. Bruce took the silver tnedal in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, where he had gone to defend his gold medal, and the World Champion title he earned in 198^1. His first of the "grand slam" of wrestling titles was the NCAA crown. An Indiana State University graduate, Baumgartner compiled a spectacular 134-12 record at the Terre Haute-based school with 70 of his wins by pins. All but one of his losses, that in the finals of the NCAA tournament, were in his first two years at Indiana State. He was twice runner-up in the national collegiate tournament before clinching the 1982 title when he finished 44-0. Baumgartner was also honored as a collegiate athlete when he was named one of the NCAA's top five award wiimers for achieving athletic success, showing leadership qualities and displaying academic prowess. He also was awarded an NCAA post-graduate scholarship for his 3.77 grade point average in industrial arts and received his master's degree at Oklahoma Stale University where the grappling standout also served as an assistant mat coach. Baumgartner has been even more successful on the freestyle mats. He is an eight-time national freestyle champion — three times at the AAU, once at the USWF and four times at the USA national tournament. Twice he has won championships at the National Sports Festival. The Haledon, New Jersey, native won a gold medal at the World University Games in 1981, while he qualified for the 1982 world team and was second in the 1982 World Cup. In 1983, he again won the silver medal in the World Cup as well as the Tiblisi Tournament in Tiblisi, USSR. He won the Great Plains and the midlands, was third in the world championships in Kiev, USSR, and captured the silver medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. In 1985, Baumgartner won his second world cup at the prestigious World Super Championships in Japan. In October, he placed third in the world championships in Budapest, Himgary. In 1986, he captured his third World Cup, then finally won the one title that had eluded him — the World Championship — to become the first United States wrestler ever to w’in the world heavyweight crown, and the first to dethrone the Soviet heavyweight stronghold since 1981. Baumgartner has been bestowed with the Southland Olympia Award, also received by Mary Lou Retton, Greg Louganis, Ralph Sampson, and Ed and Lou Banach. The Scot coach was also granted the President's Award from his alma mater, Indiana State University, to join such notables as Boston Celtics star Larry Bird and former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. Honors bestowed up>on Baumgartner this past year included being named the USA wrestling Athlete of the Year and inductions into the Pennsylvania and Erie County Athlete Halls of Fame. Bruce, his wife Linda, and their son, Bryan Lee, reside in Edinboro.
