INC. COUNTRY FAIR 2004EdlnlnrollnlwrsltiiSoflliall ♦ Pagol Head Coach Dan GierlaK Dan Gierlak enters his fifteenth season at the helm of the Edinboro University softball program. Gierlak guid ed Edinboro to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play offs in 1990 and led the Fighting Scots to a 21-10 overall record in 1994. The Boro has not been as fortunate in recent years, but did make a revival in 2003. After going 7-24 in 2002 and 9-28 in 2001 the Fighting Scots finished with a 16-22 ledger a year ago. That came after Gierlak’s 2000 squad posted a 21-15 record, his fourth 20win season. The 2000 version of Fighting Scot softball posted 14 wins in the PS AC West, the most conference victories with Gierlak in charge. Two of the PSAC wins came against perennial power California(Pa.). Gierlak began his coaching career in football before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team from mm Year Overall 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 18-11 14-19-1 11-23 6-16 13-20 21-10 19-19 20-22 15-24 20-22-1 21-15 9-28 7-24 16-22 mm PSAC Pet. 5-5 6-4 2-8 2-8 5-5 6-4 9-11 7-13 9-11 11-9 14-6 5-15 3-15 7-13 .621 .426 .324 .273 .394 .677 .500 .476 .385 .478 .583 .243 .226 .421 1989-94, then after a one-year hiatus in 1995 to focus solely on his duties as an assistant on former head coach Tom Hollman’s football staff, he returned in 1996. After graduating from Edinboro in 1983, Gierlak moved on to Thiel College, serving as an assistant football coach in 1984. His next stop was semi-professional football, directing the Chicago Cowboys to a national title in 1984 and a second-place national finish in 1985. Gierlak returned to his alma mater in 1986, serving as an assistant football coach at Edinboro for nine seasons. He was responsi ble for the recruitment and coaching of eight Fighting Scot All-Americans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Cole and Jeremy O’Day, a 1996 first-team All-PS AC offensive lineman and a member of the 1998 CEL Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts. A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlak graduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. He was a three-year letterman for the Fighting Scots football team as a defensive back. Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy Adams, also a graduate of Edinboro University, have three children, Alexandria Alicia (11), Daniel Jr. (Joey) (8) and Lauren (4). Amy is a former Nancy Acker Award winner, recognized as the top senior female athlete at Edinboro in 1989. She serves as the women’s golf coach at Gannon University. Page 2 ♦ 2004 Edinboro Unlversltir Softball ___________2004 Preview__________ Solid Defense, Inexperienced Pitcliing Shape Campaign The consensus is that winners are built on pitching and defense. If that is the case, Edinboro University softball coach Dan Gierlak feels his 2004 edition has fifty per cent of the equation, but he’s not so sure about the other half. “Defensively, we’re looking basically at kids who have started two and three years in the field,’’ related Gierlak. “They understand what it takes. We have seven kids in their third year as starters. In that apect the kids have come a long way. I think that will be the strength, the kids knowing each other and the defense.’’ A year ago Edinboro finished with a 16-22 record, and pitching was a big part of the success the team enjoyed. However, this year’s staff is filled with youth and uncer tainty, but Gierlak likes their potential. “You’ve got two sophomores,” com mented Gierlak. “Kim Fleissner threw a 'one-hitter against Mercyhurst, but struggled at times. She has the most experience. “Samantha Krupp was sick last year and saw virtually no time at all. Then there are two freshmen. I think the two freshmen pitchers can be pretty good. All four can be good, but they’re not tested in game situa tions. They have to mature.” The third ingredient of note is hitting. After hitting just .222 as a team a year ago and averaged 2.5 runs per game, Gierlak feels the experience will lead to more quality at bats, and ultimately, more runs. “I think we have a couple hitters who are pretty good,” Gierlak assessed. “We have more speed than we’ve had in the past. The kids have had a lot of at bats. “We’re going to run to death with Tara Frantz and Courtney Shewak. With the pitchers being so young, I think we have to score some runs. We have to manufacture runs.” Despite the youthful pitching, Gierlak has once again assembled an imposing schedule. The slate includes games during the team’s southern swing against Coker and Fayetteville State. The Fighting Scots will also play in the Methodist Early Bird Tournament and the Francis Marion Invitational, then when they come back north will participate in the Mid East Challenge. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference figures to be strong again with the likes of Califomia(Pa.), Lock Haven and Indiana(Pa.). Finally, the Scots will play local rivals Gnnon and Mercyhurst. PITCHERS With two sophomores and two fresh men comprising the pitching staff, Gierlak can only hope that the pitchers growp up quickly. Kim Fleissner is the only pitcher to take the mound for the Fighting Scots a year ago to return. The sophomore was 3-6 with a 3.99 ERA, making nine starts. In 47 1/3 innings she gave up 63 hits and 24 walks while striking out 24. Fleissner enjoyed her best outing of the year in an 8-0 win over Mercyhurst, giving up just one hit and strik ing out six. In her next start she allowed just one earned run in a 4-2 win over Lock Haven, but after that she lost her last three decisions. “As a freshman, Kim pitched for us in some big games,” noted Gierlak. “She has gotten stronger, is using her legs more, and understands pitching more. If she stays healthy she can be pretty good. She has worked on location and changing speeds. Kim throws a lot of different pitches and her ball moves. She also throws hard.” Sophomore Samantha Krupp pitched in three games for a total of 5 1/3 innings on last year’s southern trip. She posted a 10.50 ERA, missing the rest of the season due to illness. Gierlak feels that as Krupp develops consistency she will become a dependable pitcher. “Samantha can throw hard. In fact, she’s one of the hardest throwers we have. She was a little inconsistent last year, but she has developed a little bit of consistency this year. She has good movement on the ball and is very coachable. We just couldn’t get her healthy for more than a couple weeks at a time last year. She can be pretty good, she just needs experience. She has worked on her weaknesses.” Freshmen Kim Kurchev and Jess 2004EdinboroOniversftySoftball ♦ Pages 2004 Preview Lindamood figure to get indoctrinated pretty quickly. “Kim is very cool and calm on the mound,” notes Gierlak. She throws very, very well and hits her spots. She’s deceiv ingly fast because she has a knuckleball and changeup. Kim is a good athlete who can hit, and can play third base if needed.” Gierlak feels that Lindamood has already matured a great deeal since her arrival. “Jess is deceivingly fast and has a very smooth delivery. She has a nice screw ball and a pretty good drop pitch. In addi tion, she has a super changeup. I’m expect ing big things out of her. She didn’t pitch much her senior year in high school because of injuries. She will get better and better.” INFIEIDERS The infield will feature a bit of the old and a bit of the new. The left side remains intact with Courtney Shewak at shortstop and and Andrea Palmieri at third base. The right side will have a new look at first base with slugger Holly Hutchison expected to carry a big bat. Basil Davis saw plenty of action at second last year, but she is in a three-way battle for the job. Andrea Palmieri begins her third season as the starter at third base. Shewak is a two-year starter who made a smooth transition from second base to shortstop a year ago. The lone senior on the roster, she finished second on the team with a .293 average with a home run and a team leading 15 RBIs. In addition, she led the team with 12 stolen bases. “I was disappointed Courtney wasn’t on the all-conference team a year ago,” stressed Gierlak. “She is tough at shortstop. She needs to stay healthy but she has played hurt. The last two years she has been our number four hitter butr we will move her to third in the order this year. She’s a strong player offen sively, has a solid glove, and is a competitor.” Palmieri enters her third season as the starter at third base. After hitting just .169 as a freshman, she boosted her average to .242 with a homer and 12 RBIs while start ing all 38 games. “Andrea has played a lot of games for us,” stated Gierlak. “She’s one of our better hitters and an extremely hard worker. In the past she thought too much as a hitter, but she has matured. She’s a lot stronger and has the ability to hit the ball hard. I don’t think there’s a better fielding third baseman in the conference, although Cal has a good third baseman.” Sophomore Basil Davis started 35 games and played in 37 a year ago, but she struggled at the plate, hitting just .186. After hitting sec ond a great deal last year, Gierlak will move her down to the bottom of the order. “Basil has developed into a pretty good fielder,” related Gierlak. “She forms a good combination with Courtney. She struggled with the bat, but she’s gotten better. She’s made some adjustments.” Davis looks to hold off freshmen Kristi Diminuco and Cristin Grzegorzewski for the second base job. Diminuco is the younger sister of catcher Michele Diminuco, and has the ability to play second or short. Grzegorzewski has impressed Gierlak, and will likely serve as a utility player seeing action all around the infield. “The biggest thing with Kim is learn ing,” commented Gierlak. “She has incredi ble bat speed and a knowledge of how quick the game is. She’s probably a year away, but will be a solid backup. She will push people as she gets more comfortable.” Page 4 ♦ 2004 Edinhoro University Sottball 2004 Preview “Cristin has a great work ethic,” contin ued Gierlak. “She has a very good swing, a strong arm and has made great strides.” Gierlak can’t wait to write Holly Hutchison’s name into the linbeup in the cleanup spot and at first base. A lefty hitter, she played as a freshman at Geneva College, earning all-conference and honorable men tion All-American honors. “Holly is probably the best hitter I’ve seen,” exclaimed Gierlak. “She’s exception al. She has a great glove, and a very strong arm, but the biggest thing is hitting the ball. She hits the ball hard all the time.” Sophomores Michele Diminuco and Amber Goetschius will share the catching duties. Both struggled at the plate a year ago, with Goetschius hitting .111 and Diminuco .103. “Michele makes up in calling a game what she lacks in arm strength,” assessed Gierlak. “She has done a great job with the younger pitchers. She calls a nice game. Hitting-wise she has really improved. Amber has a cannon for an arm and has got ten a lot stronger. She has developed a lot more bat speed.” Freshmen Leanne Carmichael and Allison Harned round out the infielders. Carmichael will be a backup at first base. She was still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered as a senior in high school, and was not cleared until mid-fall. Harned will serve as a reserve at second. “Jen is a lefthanded hitter who can run,” stated Gierlak. “She developed into a good defensive first baseman, but the outfield is a more natural position for her.” Juniors Jen Jones and Erin Leveille and sophomores Katie Wratten and Lindsay Zataweski will also see plenty of action. Jones saw limited action last year, playing in just 12 games, and moves from second base. Leveille was the regular left fielder a year ago, but may also be pressed into service at catcher. She only hit. 156, but was second on the team with 14 RBIs while managing just 14 hits. After redshirting two years ago, Wratten hit .262 while starting 34 games last year. Zataweski hit .156 in 32 at bats. “Jen has very good athletic ability and has made a great adjustment from the infield to the outfield,” commented Gierlak. “THe more she plays, the more comfortable she’ll be. Erin has great athletic ability and is a very versatile player. There’s no limit with her. Katie is one of the best athletes I’ve ever coached. She struggled at times with the bat last year, but has made adjustments. As a freshman Lindsay was up and down, but she came up big in some games. She will push for a starting job.” OUTFIELDERS Junior Tara Frantz enters her third year as the starting center fielder. She was a first team All-PSAC West selection and also an All-Region choice. She boosted her average to a team-leading .303 with a team-leading 36 hits, 7 doubles and 8 stolen bases. “Tara is a leader on the field,” Gierlak pointed out. “:She runs extremely well and gets a good jump on the ball. She is hitting the ball harder and longer this year.” The rest of the outfield is up in the air, but Gierlak feels good about the talent. Junior Jen Ronald will likely see plenty of time despite hitting .216. Ronald led the Scots with 3 triples and drove in 11 runs. She played outfield as a freshman, then did a solid job at first base last year. After playing first base a year ago, Jen Ronald moves back to the outfield. 2004 Edlnboro University Softliall ♦ Page 5 Fighting Scots Profiies 2004 Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr.
