Frank G. Pogue President season at the helm of the Edinboro University softball program. Gierlak guided Edinboro to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs in 1990 and led the Fighting Scots to a 21-10 overall record in 1994. The Boro has not been as fortunate in recent years, but did make a revival in 2003. After going 7-24 in 2002 and 9-28 in 2001 the Fighting Scots finished with a 1622 ledger. Last year's team was 8-28. Gierlak's 2000 squad posted a 21-15 record, his fourth 20-win season. The 2000 version of Fighting Scot softball posted 14 wins in the PSAC West, the most conference victories with Gierlak in charge. Two of the PSAC wins came against perennial power Califomia(Pa.). Gierlak began his coaching career in football before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team S w - ’-w Go Scots! Dan Gierlak enters his sixteenth from 1989-94, then after a one-year hiatus in 1995 to focus solely on his duties as an assistant on former head coach Tom HoUman's football staff, he returned in 1996. After graduating from Edinboro in 1983, Gierl^ moved on to Thiel College, serving as an assistant football coach in 1984. His next stop was semi-professional football, directing the Chicago Cowboys to a national title in 1984 and a second-place national finish in 1985. Gierlak returned to his akna mater in 1986, serving as an assis tant football coach at Edinboro for nine seasons. He was responsible for the recruitment and coaching of eight Fighting Scot All-Americans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Cole and Jeremy O'Day, a 1996 first-team AU-PSAC offensive line man and a member of the 1998 CEL Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts. A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlak graduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education. He was a three-year letterman for the Fighting Scots football team as a £ defensive back. Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy Adams, also a graduate of Edinboro University, have three children, Alexandria Alicia (12), Daniel Jr. (Joey) (9) and Lauren (5). Amy is a former Nancy Acker Award winner, recognized as the top senior female athlete at Edinboro in 1989. T Thank you for supporting Edinboro University athletics and the stu dent-athletes who compete for our football, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, wheelchair basketball and other adaptive sports, cross country, track, soccer, swimming, and softball teams. INe are proud of their accomplishments ath letically and academically, and we are proud of our coaching stajfwho assist in making good things happen for students and the University. The Athletic programs at Edinboro University enjoy a rich history and tradition of excellence. This amazing legacy will be among the points of pride celebrated during the University's Sesquicentennial in the 2006-07 academic year. As we prepare to celebrate the University's 150th anniver sary, we are guided by the theme, "Building a prosperous future through academic excellence and civility." The learning, dedication, discipline, and sportsmanship that are central to the experience of Edinboro athletes also enable their prosperity in other aspects of life. At the same time, athletic competitions contribute to the quality of life on our campus and throughout the communities of northwestern Pennsylvania. Clearly, the Fighting Scots are a partner in the region's prosperity. YJe encourage our Fighting Scot Fans to visit the campus as often as possible. I look forward to greeting you at our athletic, cultural, and arts presentations. Edinboro ended the 2004 campaign with an 8-28 record, ending the season with ten straight losses. Gierlak likes what he sees in this year's squad. He admits that the pitching is yoimg, and the Fighting Scots \\dU have to score some runs to put people away, along with mixing and matching a group of inexperienced but promising hurlers. What impress^ the veteran coach the most is the leadership capabilities of his upperclassmen. "If you watched our practices, you would never know we only won eight games last year," related Gierlak. "The attitude of the kids has just been great. This is a close-knit team. They have worked extra hard through the fall and winter. "I think our senior leadership is out standing. Andrea Palmieri, Jen Ronald, Tara Frantz have been here four years, and they want to leave on a greeat note. Holly Hutchison is a junior who is an out standing person and a super player. It's been a few years since we've had some great leaders. I don't think anyone will outwork us." While Gierlak likes his team's leader ship capabilities, on the field it's hitting that will hopefully carry the Fighting Scots to a winning season, that despite a .236 team average a year ago. "I think we will be able to hit," Gierlak emphasized. "I'll be very disapp>ointed if we don't. I know we have to score some runs. "We're stiU yoimg in pitching, we threw well at times last year. We have some exceptional pitchers, which we haven't had in a while. I'm excited about our two freshmen pitchers. I'm anxious to see those kids. Our pitchers are a year A year ago Gierlak entered the sea son wi^ two sophomores and two fresh men on his pitclWg staff. It hasn't changed this year, as the youth still abounds. But the four aforementioned pitchers are a year older, and he's added two freshmen who possess great promise. The veteran of the group is Kim Heissner, a junior who posted a 1-12 record but with a respectable 2.92 ERA. In 621/3 innings she gave up 85 hits and 33 walks with 24 strikeouts. "Kim had a great freshman year", emphasized Gierlak, "including a one-hit ter against Mercyhurst. She was dinged up last year with a back injury, and wasn't healthy most of the year. She's looking good this year and will have an impact. She has a great drop ball. She throws hard, and she's learned to become a pitcher, not just a thrower." The other junior on the pitching staff is Samantha Knipp, but she has seen lim ited action her firet two years. "Her first two years it seemed like each year she's gotten sick in the winter," Gierlak pointed out. "This year she's healthy. She has to become a lot more consistent. She's a lot stronger and her ball is moving better." Gierlak points to last year's game with Califomia(Pa.) when talking about Krupp's potential. She held a 1-0 lead before the Vulcans rallied against a tiring Krupp. She finished the year with an 0-4 record and 6.44 ERA in 291/3 innings. Sophomores Jessica Lindamood and Kim Kurchev showed promise as fresh men. Lindamood finished with a 3-4 record with a 3.72 ERA. She tossed a team-high 69 2/3 innings, giving up 89 hits and 25 walks while striking out 32. "Jessica emerged in the fall," Gierlak commented. "She picked up a little speed, working on a riseball. She already has a great changeup. There's times when she throws the ball extremely well. With her changeup, she can emerge as a dominat ing pitcher for us." Lindamood's hitting also caught Gierlak's attention this fall. Kurchev highlighted her freshman campaign with a no-hitter against Fayetteville State. She ended the year with a 4-8 record and 5.25 ERA, but threw two shutouts. In 66 2/3 innings she allowed 105 hits, with 31 walks and a team-high 49 strikeouts. Two freshmen in particular have Gierlak excited. The first is Vanessa Rose, a lefthander who was a two-time confer ence player of the year at Manchester(Oh.) Fligh School. "Tm very impressed with her," related Gierlak. "She makes the ball move more than any body I've been around." Rose may be slowed early on after a bout with mononucleosis this winter. The other first-year hurler expected to make an impact is Mary Lynn Arlotta. A former standout at Moimt St. Mary Academy, Arlotta is a two-time league MVP. "Mary Lynn comes from a good program," noted Gierlak. "She's a strong kid who can make the ball move. I think she'll emerge as one of our top pitchers. Edinboro University Softball 2005 page 2 Edinboro University Softball 2005 older. At the same time, I don't think we can go out and just blow people away with one pitcher. We have to move pitch ers around." In addition to the young pitching staff, the middle infield has Gierlak con cerned. While the Fighting Scots are very solid at first and third, Gierlak must replace starters at second base and short stop. His main goal — make the routine plays. For years Gierlak has scheduled an extremely grueling southern trip to begin the season. He's taking a different approach this year, wifii nine games sAeduled in Fort Myers, FL. The differ ence is the Fighting &ots will face eight teams from the north, plus traditional southern power Lynn. The trip gets underway on March 7 vs. Holy Family. Pitcliers As a freshman she'll take her lumps, but she's smart. She's a pitcher, not a throw er." Two other newcomers will likely play limited roles this year. Lauren Gardner is a freshman who is a hard worker and continues to work on funda mentals. Gabe Shields is a local product from nearby Fort LeBoeuf High School. A player with promising abiMity, she threw some in the fall but not much during the winter. She could also see time at first base. Infielders The saying goes that winning teams are strong up the middle. More than any thing the Fighting Scots will be young and inexperienced. The good news is the Fighting Scots are very strong on the comers with HoUy Hutchison at first base and Andrea Palmieri at third base. Hutchison, a junior who swings from the left side, emerged as Edinboro's sec ond-leading hitter in her first season as a Fighting Scot after transferring from Geneva. She hit .317 with a teamhigh 19 RBIs, and displayed plenty of extra base power with 9 doubles, a triple and a homer. "Holly is one of the best hitters in our con ference," exclaimed Gierlak. "We expect big things from her. Aft pages 2005 Preview 2005 Preview She may play some other spots in the infield. Holly's a leader with a great glove, and one of the best sticks since I've been here." Pahnieri enters her fourth year as the starter at the hot comer. A strong defen sive performer, she has improved as a hit ter each year. A year ago she bumped her average up fro .242 to .259, with 14 RBI's, second on the team, with 5 doubles and a team-high 3 home runs. "Last year Andrea's glove was not as good, as she made a lot of errors (22), but die pitchers didn't help," Gierlak pointed out. "She's out to prove she's one of the best third basemen in our league, both in fielding and hitting. She has the ability to be an outstanding hitter. Last year she came through at times with clutch hits." Junior Basil Davis is expected to take over at second base, with sophomore Kristi Diminuco the likely starter at short stop. Gierlak has one goal for both play ers — make the routine plays. Davis saw considerable action as a freshman, but not as much as a sopho more as she struggled with a .156 average in 64 at bats. "Basil has done a real good job. She's worked her tail off," stressed Gierlak. "She has very good athletic ability. I think she's going to have a good year for us, both hit ting and in the field. She has the ability to be very steady." Diminuco also stmggled with the bat as a freshman, with just 3 hits in 37 at bats (.081), striking out 17 times. "Kristi has been a pleasant surprise," admitted Gierlak. "She has a very steady glove and can make the routine plays. She's worked hard on batting, and has come a long ways. She has the ability to be a very good player." No fewer than five players are bat tling for the catching job, and Gierlak feels whoever wins out will be an improve ment from a year ago. None of them saw time behind the plate a year ago. The lone veteran is Leanne Carmichael, a versatile sophomore who will also see time at first base and also possibly third base. She spent most of her time at designated hitter a year ago, fin ishing with a .143 average. "We needed to find a spot to get her on the field," Gierlak emphasized. "She's a hard worker and has developed into a pretty good catcher." The other four candidates are fresh men, all with qualifies that have caught Gierlak's attention. Jessica Cox was a standout on two Northwestern High School teams that reached the PIAA Western finals, in 2002 and 2004. "Jess has a cannon for an arm," noted Gierlak. "She can play. She's a bigger kid and comes from a very good program. She knows how to win. She has great confi dence in herself, and she can hammer the ball. I'm real impressed with her." Mandie lorfido spent the winter playing on the women's basketball team, so she may get a late start. But her athlet ic ability intrigues Gierlak, so much so that she may also see time at shortstop. "Mandie is a hard-nosed kid who knows the game," Gierlak pointed out. "She swings a great bat, has a very good arm, and is a leader. She's a good enough athlete that she could play in any spot." Hannah Kipfer is actually in her sec ond season academically, but did not play a year ago. She has been a pleasant sur- Gierlak enters 2005 feeling the strength of his team is in the outfield, with two of three starters returning. After playing at first base and hitting just .216 as a sophomore, Jen Ronald moved to right field a year ago and hit a team-leading .341 while earning second team All-PSAC West honors. She had 4 doubles and a pair of triples while steal ing 7 bases in 8 tries. "Jen needs to pick up where she left off last year," Gierlak stated. "She did a great job. She'll be our number two or three hitter. She can bimt, run or slap. She's not a flashy player, but very steady." Senior Tara Frantz enters her fourth year as the starting center fielder. A first team AU-PSAC West selection as a sopho more when she led the Scots with a .303 average, she dropped to a .257 average a year ago. Frantz did have 5 doubles, a homer, and stole 7 bases in 12 attempts, but Gierlak expects her play to improve this year. "Tara was previously an all-region player, and she has to get back to being at that level," emphasized Gierlak. "Defensively, she has a great glove, a can non for an arm, and she covers a lot of Edinboro University Softball 2005 page 4 Edinboro University Softball 2003 prise, exhibiting a very strong arm. If her bat comes aroimd, Gierlak predicts she'll see plenty of action either at catcher or in the outfield. Megan Prazenica is another player who can play multiple positions, and could also see time in the infield. She can run and has exhibited a solid bat. Depth aboimds at first base, with Carmichael, Arlotta and Lmdamood capa ble of playing there. In addition, Jen Ronald, the starter two years ago, could move back in from right field if needed. Diminuco and Prazenica are the reserves at second base, with lorfido an alternative at shortstop. Cox and Carmichael will fill in for Palmieri at third base. Outfielders ground. She loves to play The better she plays, the better we'll be." Left field is up for grabs, with Cyndi Camaghi, Kipfer and Rose leading the battle. Camaghi is a junior who played two seasons at UNC Pembroke before transferring to Edinboro. After hitting .269 while starting 41 games for the Braves in 2003, she slumped to .169 a year ago. "Cyndi has been a plesant surprise," commented Gierlak. "She can run well, and has a strong arm. I'm anxious to see her hitting. We've changed some things. She can be a good player." The hidden variable in the outfield is Katie Wratten, a fourth-year junior who saw considerable action in 2003, hitting .262, but played in just 20 games a year ago, with a .200 average. She is serving an internship near her hometown in New York, and may not be available very much. Gierlak looks for freshmen Abby Paterline and Amanda Ward to figure in the outfield mix. Paterline is a redshirt freshman who joined the team this year and is still raw. Ward is also a sophomore academical ly who joined the team this year, and is also in need of experi ence. pages 2005 Fightiiig Scot Roster No. Name 2 Mary Lynn Arlotta Pos. P/IB Ht. 5-7 Yr. Fr.
