BkwCroM BluaShMd ' Paool KUB met UH SIMM Dan Gierlak enters his eleventh season at the helm of the Edinboro University softball program Gierlak has enjoyed success as the coach of the Edinboro softball program. He guided the Boro to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs in 1990 and led the Scots to a 21-10 overall record in 1994. Last season, the team posted a 20-22-1 record, the third 20-win season under Gierlak. Gierlak began his coaching career in football before concentrating on softball. He coached the softball team from 1989-94, then after a one-year hiatus in 1995 to concentrate solely on his duties as an assistant on former head coach Tom Hollman’s foot ball staff, he returned in 1996. After graduating from Edinboro in 1983, Gierlak moved on to Thiel College, serving as an assistant football coach in 1984. His next stop was semi-professional football, directing the Chicago Cowboys to a national title in 1984 and a second-place national finish in 1985. Gierlak returned to his alma mater in 1986, serving as an assistant football coach at the Boro for nine seasons. He was responsible for the recruitment and coaching of eight Fighting Scot AllAmericans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Cole and Jeremy O’Day, a 1996 first-team All-PSAC offensive lineman and a member of the 1998 CFL Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts. A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlak graduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. He was a three-year letterman for the Scots’ football team as a defensive back. Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy Adams, also a graduate of Edinboro University, have three children, Alexandria Alicia, Daniel Jr. (Joey) and Lauren. Amy is also a former Nancy Acker Award winner, recognized as the top senior female ath lete at Edinboro in 1989. Shank spent the fall season serving as an assistant volleyball coach under Lynn Theehs. He came to Edinboro after serving for three years as the head varsity coach for the girls’ volleyball team at New Oxford (PA) High School, where he was named Coach of the Year in 1998. Shank earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History/Pre-Law from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1995. While at lndiana(Pa.), Shank was a four-year member and a senior captain on the lUP men’s volleyball team, which was ranked num ber one in NCAA Division II for a good portion of his senior campaign. "This team has great potential,” noted Gierlak. “There is a good mixture of vet eran leadership and young talent on this team. We are definitely excited about this year." As usual the Fighting Scots will open the season by playing some of the stiffest competition in the country. Within the first week of the 2000 campaign the Boro faces NCAA Division II Regional qualifier C.W. Post and Coker College, which fin ished 7th in Division II last year. "We play against some great competi tion,” said the 10-year veteran. “The tough schedule helps us when we get into conference play.” Unfortunately, when conference play arrives the schedule doesn't get any easi er for the Scots. Two-time National Champion and perennial Division II power California(Pa.) and lndiana(Pa.), the two teams that finished ahead of the Scots in the PSAC West last year, are not the only PSAC teams that pose a threat. "The PSAC has gotten better each year since I arrived at Edinboro. We have to show up to play every game because there is not a weak team in the league or on our schedule," said Gierlak. This year's success will depend on the team's offensive production. "We need to do some things like bunt and run to jump start the offense," stressed Gierlak. "We have the ability to be an outstanding hit ting team, it is just a matter of getting everyone hitting at the same time." Last year, the Scots scored three runs or fewer in 27 games, compiling an 8-181 record. Edinboro averaged just 3.44 runs per game. "With our pitching we don't need to score a lot of runs we just need to be consistent," Gierlak added. The Boro was 6-7 in one run games and 10-8 in games decided by two runs or fewer during the 1999 campaign. The 2000 version of Edinboro softball has all the elements of a winning team with solid veteran pitching as well as a defense that committed just 66 errors in 43 games. "We have good gloves and strong arms all around," commented Gierlak. "The kids have worked hard and we have some three and four-year starters that understand what I expect and how to push themselves. We won 10 out of 16 down the stretch last year so they also know what it takes to win games." Pitching Senior Suzanne Nimelli, a two-time AllPSAC second team selection, is part of Edinboro’s dynamic pitching duo. Page 4 Two-time All-PSAC second team per formers Brianne Taylor and Suzanne Nimelli anchor the pitching staff. Sophomore Tiffany Miller and freshman Kelly Griffith will also be looked upon to provide some innings. "Our pitching is outstanding. The better Nimelli and Taylor throw the better we will be," stated Gierlak. A year ago the Edinboro pitching staff allowed just 2.54 earned runs per game, tossing nine shutouts while holding the opposition to a .222 batting average. "No team in the league has a better pair Edinboro University Softbaii 2000 SBSTS mu TS suits ss ms SSSSiSS of pitchers,” Gierlak boasted. “They understand how to pitch and are the main strength of our team. They are the best pair of pitchers I have seen in my tenure at Edinboro.” Taylor, a junior, made 25 appearances, completing 19 of her 20 starts. She post ed an 11-10 record, leading the Scots in wins and innings pitched with 139.2. In addition, Taylor registered 127 strikeouts, while only allowing 38 walks. She also tossed 4 shutouts. Nimelli, a senior, finished 9-10 with 132 strikeouts in 134.2 innings of work. Her 6.86 strikeouts per seven innings ranked second in the PSAC last season. In 23 appearances she recorded 15 complete games, fired 4 shutouts and allowed only 37 free passes. Gierlak believes Griffith has the poten tial to be better than Taylor and Nimelli. Unlike Taylor and Nimelli, who were thrown to the wolves as freshmen, the for mer first team All-New York State per former will have time to develop. Griffith already has good movement on all her pitches and a great knuckleball. Miller, a freshman, has worked hard on becoming more consistent in her delivery. She will be a role player this season but has already improved greatly from fall to spring. Infieid Depth and versatility are two words that can be used to describe the Fighting Scot infield. A year ago injuries gave players the opportunity to learn and develop at other positions. As a result, six of the seven members of this year's infield have the ability to play multiple positions. Brandy Henderson, a second team AllPSAC performer as a freshman, solidified her spot at first base with last season’s performance. She batted .306 in her first season with team-highs in doubles (6), runs scored (23) and stolen bases (10). She also had 34 hits and 10 runs batted in during the 1999 campaign. She is expect ed to bat cleanup, and could also spend Edinboro Unhrorsity Softboll 2000 Sophomore Brandy Henderson hit .306 while scoring a team-leading 23 runs. She also led the team with 254 putouts at first base. some time roaming the outfield. Sophomore Kelli Higgins is a solid backup at first. In six games as a fresh man she had one hit in seven at bats. The middle infield is where the Boro has the most flexibility with three players possessing the ability to play either short stop or second base. Amanda Riley, a junior, emerged as a quality second baseman, committing just 4 errors. She only hit .228, but has the ability to hit the long ball as well as beat out grounders with her outstanding speed. Junior Jen Patsy missed most of last year due to an injury. In limited action she batted .333 with three hits in nine plate appearances. Despite last season’s injury her range has improved and combine that with a good glove, strong arm and quick release and she gives Gierlak another solid defensive player. Lisa Blackhurst filled in at short last year after playing a majority of her first two seasons at second base, and did an out standing job, earning second team AllPSAC West recognition. Blackhurst hit .290 with 31 hits and 15 runs batted in, second best on the team. sms istK n Bstu sh was ssmss She will play shortstop or second base and has the ability to be an All-PSAC selection at either spot. The anchor of the infield is senior co captain Stormy Alexander. She possess es a strong arm, outstanding knowledge of the game and a wealth of experience. Alexander was an All-PSAC third baseman in 1999 and a second team AllRegion performer as a freshman. She has been the team's number three hitter since her freshman season. The team captain is extremely versatile, earning AllPSAC status as a utility player and third baseman. She hit over .300 for the third straight year, hitting .344 with a team-best 42 hits and 16 runs batted in. Junior Heather Geer is coming off a knee injury that limited her to 18 games last year. Defensively the third base man/catcher has a strong arm and has regained her range during the offseason. If she hits well enough she will see plenty of action, whether at third base, catcher or as the designated hitter. Catcher is the one position in Gierlak's Junior Sarah Roseto will battle Heather Ulmer for time behind the plate. Pages lineup still up in the air. Sarah Roseto is the early favorite. She has worked hard on the fundamentals of catching and becoming more comfortable behind the plate. Last year she batted .194 but showed signs of power with four doubles. Heather Ulmer, a sophomore transfer from John Carroll University, is an out standing defensive player with good arm strength. Like Roseto, Ulmer needs to develop with the bat. A year ago at John Carroll she batted .185 and scored eight runs in 29 games. Outfield Unlike last year, depth in the outfield is not a luxury on this year's Edinboro softball team. Gierlak has only four full-time outfielders on the roster, one of whom is trying to recover from a serious knee injury. However, the three healthy regu lars at his disposal are solid players with the ability to be All-PSAC players. Co-captain Diane Trickey, a four-year starter, with the the last three seasons in right field, is a strong-armed, intelligent outfielder. Trickey can bunt, drive the ball or execute on the hit and run. Although she batted just .178 last year, she drove in 11 runs. Junior April Hurd struggled last season after being named the PSAC West Rookie of the Year in 1998. She was also an AllRegion center fielder as a freshman. Hurd suffered the proverbial sophomore slump, batting .233 with 13 RBIs, 16 runs scored and a team-high 10 bases on balls last season. As a freshman she hit .385 with a team best 17 runs batted in. Meghan Seth, a sophomore left fielder, is a former standout at nearby Fort LeBoeuf High School. She is a converted high school shortstop with a strong arm. In her first season, she hit .240 with 10 RBIs and one home run. The final piece of the outfield picture is junior Jamie D'Angelo, who is recovering from an serious knee injury. D'Angelo hit .280 last season and her .345 on base percentage was third on the team.
