Radovich has guided the Scots to the post-season two of the past four seasons and in 1994, became the first head coach since 1971 to lead Edinboro to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crown. The 1994 squad, which was ranked as high as 16th in NCAA Division II, also advanced to the Division II National Tournament for the first time in school historyand hosted the Northeast Regionals. In 1995, the Fighting Scots, who were ranked as high as 11th during the regular season, finished second in the conference and once again returned to the postseason. The 30 wins by the 1995 squad was the third time an Edinboro team had won 30 or more games under Radovich. Five players under Radovich have been taken in the Major League Baseball Amateur draft in the past ten years, including right-handed pitcher Mark Corey, who was the Scots’ highest-ever draft choice when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round of the 1994 amateur draft. Radovich owns an overall record of 205-260 with the Fighting Scots, and is a combined 349-314 at the Community College of Allegheny-South Campus (CCAC), in Pittsburgh, and Edinboro University. Radovich began his coaching career at his Alma Mater, Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic as an assistant. In 1979, his Viking squad earned a berth in the PIAA finals, finishing third in the state. Radovich posted a 144-63 record in five seasons at CCAC-South, win ning the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Championship in 1984 and 1986, and capturing the state junior college title in 1984. His 1983 and 1985 teams won sectional championships at CCAC. Additionally, Radovich coached in the Keystone State Games for four seasons, with his teams cap turing three gold and one silver medal. Upon arriving at Edinboro in 1987, Radovich orchestrated major renova tions to the baseball complex that now make it one of the top facilities in the Tri-State area. During his collegiate coaching career, Radovich has been honored by various organizations. In 1986 he was named “Coach of the Year” at CCAC. Radovich was also honored by Edinboro University as “Coach of the Year” in 1991 at the EUP Hall of Fame Banquet. After his team set an Edinboro alltime best 17-3 conference record in 1994, Radovich was named as the PSAC “Coach of the Year.” The improvement of facilities, and the commitment towards the program, have led to the right attitude for Edinboro Baseball. That attitude can be attributed to the intelligence, personality and effort of John Radovich. This team has been a real pleasure to coach. They have worked extremely hard and have very good chemistry and work ethic. I think we can be very successful because of this attitude. The players are hungry and excited to get going. We can accomplish some great things 2 Assistant Coach Butch Kemling Butch Kemling enters his second season as an assistant coach in the Fighting Scot program. With his many years of baseball experience, Kemling brings great knowledge to the Scot pro gram and is a major asset to the program. He previously served as the head baseball coach at nearby Northwestern High School for eight years building the program into a top com petitor in the Erie County League, with District X playoff appearances in 1994 and 95. In 1996, Kemling served as the baseball coach at Girard High School. “Butch has been a tremendous help to me personally, and to our players,” notes head coach John Radovich. “He has helped the development and refining of the players’ individual talents. Butch is a great role model for the team; his contributions are very much appreciated by everyone in the Edinboro program.” 3 Fighting Scots In The Pros 1998 Edinboro Basoball Roster Since the arrival of John Radovich, five Fighting Scots have been selected in the annual Major League Baseball Amateur draft, held each June. Four pitchers and one position player have signed major-league contracts with professional teams. Edinboro baseball is currently resresented in the Cinncinati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Texas Rangers organizations. Right-handed pitcher Pete Nyari (Erie, PA) was selected in the 17th round of the 1994 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Nyari, has filled the closer role in the bullpen during his first four seasons of professional ball, and will begin 1998 in Clearwater, Florida, home the Class A affiliate for the Phillies. In 1997, Nyari saw action in 31 Pete Nyari relief appearances, earning five saves with a 2.70 ERA. Nyari shares the Edinboro school record for strike outs in a season with 73, accomplishing that in just two years at the Boro. In 1995, two right-handed pitchers were taken in the June draft as hurlers Mark Corey (Austin, PA) and Tim Codd (North Tonowanda, NY) both signed with professional organizations. Corey, selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round, was the highest draft choice in Fighting Scot history. After two injury-plagued seasons with the Reds’ Princeton (Ciass A) affili Mark Corey ate, Corey has recovered from arm and shoulder injuries and wiil return to the diamond with the Charleston Alleycats. Pitching in 26 starts last season, Corey held a 4.57 ERA through 136 innings while striking out 97. Corey shares the single-season strikeout record with Nyari, and holds the Scots’ career record for wins (17). Corey also held the records for com plete games (14) and strikeouts (154) when he graduated. “Mark has a great arm and a great future with our organization,’’ offered Charles Henderson of the Reds organization. “He received votes to be a member of the league’s All-Star game after only pitching four games as a rookie... that is very rare.” Codd, a 46th round selection by the Texas Rangers in 1995, recorded a 7-1 record in his first season of professional baseball at Texas’ Class A affiliate, Hudson Valley, before suffering arm Tim Codd injuries in 1996. Two other former Fighting Scots also played professional baseball. In 1993, first baseman Brad Aurila (Coraopolis, PA) was chosen in the 38th round by the Montreal Expos. Aurila holds various career hitting and fielding records for the Fighting Scots, including most at bats (561), games (179) and putouts (1,099). In 1988, left-handed pitcher Tom Matthews (Pittsburgh, PA) became the first player under Radovich to be drafted when he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Nth round. In his only season at Edinboro, Matthews compiled a 4-5 record before joining the Dodgers organization after his junior year. “It’s been a pleasure to coach and work with these players,” said Radovich. “I think it (being drafted) reflects not only the talent of the players themselves, but the caliber of competition that these players have been exposed to while at Edinboro University.” 35 Shaun Mosberger 4 UR ^ 145 So Wrona, PA/Penn Hills 6-lf 19^^^ Edinboro, PA/General McLane 190 So Tqi^^nda, N.Y./Tonowanda 10 Brendan Schulte 5- 11 Michael Evans =/3B 12 Ryan 14 JW.B 15 155 F^2K|nai^e, PA/ Connellsville R/R 6-0 165 Jr R/R 6-1 180 Sr Ligonler, PA/U^^^pA^ R/R 6-0 175 Fr UL 18 Frank Kich 19 Josh cdikley fP 5-9 R/R ..6-0 Imperial, P/yWest Aif^^eny Bradford, PA/Bfadforil ^ Jr FHedens, PA/Somerset 176 6-2 21B) O^r^^ryer Falls, C/P 5-11 .l^p^pollo, PA/Kiski Sch^l 20 James HKinkle Friedens, PA/Some( 21 Ben Sayl Itfisj^p Waynetbwrg, PA/ W^dtesburg 22 HetheMcCW Sr Ambridge, PA/Am^^ 24 Sean Rusko ^o Pittsburgh, PfiJSh^m 25 Jason Blank SfflBrookville, Oakville 26 Brad Kocher Boeuf 29 Craig Kaufman rel Highlands ^Wl^Pl^t^hgl^cent 30 Brad McClelland 32 Randy Powierza e(>#95 33 Brian Junker Jr |0 188 Fr OF 190 Fr 38 Mike Doppelheuer SS/3B Pittsbiifgh, PA/S%aler Mocw^Townshi^PA/Moon No^iplljyPA^nnellsville 39 Bill Bendis P UL 6-4 250 So Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands 42 William Irons P UL 6-4 210 So Bradford^ PA/Bradford 44 Mike Vidnansky IB/OF R/R 6-3 200 So Edison, NJ/Central Jersey Head Coach: John “Ace” Radovich Assistant Coach: Butch Kemling 5 Scots Shooting for Anothor Post-Soason Borth The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Fighting Scot baseball team looks to become contenders in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference race once again in 1998. After setting a conference record with a 17-3 PSAC mark in 1994, and appearing in the national rankings in 1995, the Scots are hoping the experience this year's squad gained last year will pay dividends. With most of last year's team returning this season, Radovich feels that there will be great success and team unity. "We had a lot of bad breaks and injuries last years, and came up short in a lot of close games," commented Edinboro head coach John Radovich. "But rather than getting demor alized, our guys kept working hard. This is a special group of players. At this level, chemistry is often the deciding factor in success or failure and I can see that win ning attitude in their eyes. We are really looking fonA/ard to this year." average. Junior Chris Winters hopes to rebound after an injury a year ago. Winters was the PSAC Rookie of the Year in 1996. As a freshman he hit .387 and has only been caught stealing one time in two seasons, swiping 15 of 16 bases. Junior Ryan Anderson and sophomores Jason Ray and Frank Koch, ail had solid seasons for the Scots last year. Anderson bounced between left field and second base and is looking for a breakout type year. Ray enjoyed a solid freshman cam paign, leading the freshman class in hitting with a batting average of .311. Koch pos sesses good all-around skills, offensively and defensively, and according to Radovich, has one of the best natural swings on the team. Sophomore Mike Vidnansky, who redshirted last season due to knee surgery, looks to get his bat back into the lineup. Vidnansky should spend some time work ing at first base and in the outfield. His freshman season, Vidnansky was in the heart of the Scots' batting order, leading the team in extra base hits (14) with a .289 batting average. Vidnansky has worked hard to regain his form and will see time in the designated hitter position. Two newcomers will compete for time in the Scots outfield. Freshman Shaun Mosberger, a transfer from Marietta Coliege, had a tremendous career at Moon Township High School and was a leading hitter in the WPIAL. He is a complete play er who could pay immediate dividends. Freshman Brad McCleiland, who has played football at Edinboro the past two seasons, will join the baseball squad this Spring. McClelland had success in high school and in American Legion baseball in Uniontown, PA. How quickly he catches on will determine his impact this year. The Schedule The Scots are scheduled to play five games in West Virginia before heading south to Ft. Myers, FL, for a 12-game stretch over spring break. Edinboro will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Pennsylvania action on Saturday March 28, hosting Slippery Rock University of. In all, the Boro is scheduled to play 49 games from March 7 to May 2. The top two finishers in the PSAC Western and Eastern Divisions will qualify for the conference championship tourna ment in May, hoping to receive a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Outfielders This is without a doubt the deepest and most talented group of outfielders Radovich has coached in his 11 years at Edinboro. It will be extremely competitive with nine players vying for playing time. Senior Sean Rusko, a PSAC all-confer ence selection last year, will be looked to for senior leadership and to heip anchor the outfield. Rusko hit .366 last year and led the team in stolen bases, swiping seven bases in seven attempts. Also a pitcher, Rusko appeared in six games last season, with one complete game performance in route to a 0-4 record and a 6.40 earned run Infielders A pair of sophomores will battle for play ing time at first base for the Boro. Phil Tingen, who was a starter last year, and newcomer Jason Blank, a transfer from Community College of Allegheny County. Tingen is a great defensive player and is looking to improve his offensive output. Biank is a powerfui hitter with good defen sive skills. He will provide quality and 6 Scots Shooting for Anothor Post-Soason Borth depth at the position. Along with Vidnansky, the Scots are solid at first base. At second base, Andy Galvan, a junior college transfer from Penn State Beaver, had a solid fall season for the Boro and shows good all-around defensive skills as well as being a consistent hitter. Joe Irons, a freshman, will challenge Galvin and Anderson for playing time. Irons has good fundamental skills for the middle of the dia mond and shows steady improvement on the offensive side. Junior Brian Junker, first-team North Atlantic All-Region pick from a year ago, returns at shortstop. Junker led the Scots in seven offensive categories including bat ting average (.396), hits (59), runs (38), runs batted in (42). His .644 slugging per centage and 21 extra-base hits were also team-bests. Junker enters the '98 season stronger and faster after off-season condi tioning. A team captain and will be counted on heavily for team leadership. The Scots have added Mike Doppelheuer to the ros ter. Doppelheuer has good range to go along with a strong arm. He has quick hands and shows power with his bat. Senior Ben Saylor, who is a team cap tain, will be the anchor at third base this Spring. A very consistent player throughout his career, he made significant strides this past Fall with his hitting and Radovich looks for him to put up big numbers this season. Behind Saylor are sophomores Brendan Schulte, who also catches and pitches, and Anderson who played a num ber of games at third last season. giate baseball. McCollum possesses a strong arm and quick release, and Radovich expects him to develop into a solid catcher for the program. Sophomore Brendan Schulte returns after a successful season in which he showed good skills behind the plate, and earned more playing time throughout the season while hitting a respectable .271. A versatile player with ability to play infield and pitch, it will be tough to keep him off the field. Schulte continues to develop and was the most improved player for the Scots during the Fall season. With these four players and extra help from Galvan, who will catch in addition to his second base duties, this position appears to be very deep and talented. Pitching Three senior hurlers, Jim Brown, Sean Rusko and Josh Coakley will be counted on to guide the Scots' pitching efforts. Although the trio provided some quality performances last year, they are looking to rebound from injuries that kept them from pitching at one-hundred percent. The Boro staff is loaded with seven talented sophomores including Bill Bendis, Shaun Hayes, and Brad Kocher who all possess the tools needed to succeed in collegiate baseball. Sophomores Craig Kaufman, and Randy Powierza both followed similar pitching pro grams this past Fall and showed significant improvement with command and velocity. Bill Irons, another sophomore, has probably shown the most dramatic improvement, and looks ready to make solid contributions to the club. Finally, sophomore Brendan Schulte has been working hard on his pitching and looked good in his outings last Fall. As a class, they combined for a 7-15 record during their freshman campaign. The staff also welcomes the arrival of Mike Evans. The left-hander showed poise and command of his pitches this fall and proved he could throw strikes. He has the potential to be outstanding. Junker should see some relief work for the Scots, possibly in a closer role, despite not seeing any action on the mound since his freshman year. In 1996, Junker went 11 and saw time in nine games for the Boro. Catching The catching corps is a solid, versatile group with the talents to provide quality play behind the plate. Senior Josh Coakley returns for the Scots after hitting .285 last year despite a bad shoulder. A powerful hitter, he provides the toughness needed at the position. Sophomore James Kunkle hit a solid .302 his inaugural season and has shown steady improvement defensively. He has a good grasp of the game, and with a year of experience under his belt, should see increased action this season.
