Radovich has guided the Scots to the post-season two of the past three seasons and in 1994, became the first head coach since 1971 to lead Edinboro to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division crown. The 1994 squad, which was ranked as high as 16th in Division II, also advanced to the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the first time in school history, hosting the Northeast Regionals. In 1995, the Fighting Scots, who were ranked as high as 11th during the regular season, finished second in the conference and once again returned to the postseason. The 30 wins by the 1995 squad was the third time an Edinboro team had won 30 or more games under Radovich. Five players under Radovich have been taken in the Major League Baseball Amateur draft the past ten years, including right-handed pitcher Mark Corey, who was the Scots’ highest-ever draft choice when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round of the 1994 amateur draft. He owns an overall record of 188-227 with the Fighting Scots, and is a combined 332-281 at CCAC and Edinboro University. Radovich began his coaching career at his Alma Matter, Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic as an assistant. In 1979, his Viking squad earned a berth in the Pennsylvania State finals, finishing third in the state. Radovich also coached at Community College of Allegheny-South Campus in Pittsburgh (CCAC), where he posted a 144-63 record in five sea sons. CCAC-South won the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Championship in 1984 and 1986, and captured the state Junior college title in 1984. His 1983 and 1985 teams also won section championships at CCAC. Additionally, Radovich coached in the Keystone State Games for four seasons, with his teams capturing three gold and one silver medal. Upon arriving at Edinboro in 1987, Radovich orchestrated the major renovations to the baseball complex that now make the facilities comparable to those found in minor-league professional baseball. During his collegiate coaching career, Radovich has been honored by various organizations. In 1986 he was named “Coach of the Year” at CCAC. Radovich was also honored by Edinboro University as “Coach of the Year" in 1991 at the EUP Hall of Fame Banquet. After his team set an all-time best, 173 conference record in 1994, Radovich was named the PSAC-West “Coach of the Year.” The improvement of facilities, and a new approach toward the program, have led to a new attitude for Edinboro Baseball. That attitude can be attributed to the intelligence, personality and effort of John Radovich. 2 Assistant Coach Profiles Assistant Coacli latch Kamliag Butch Kemling enters his first season an assistant coach in the Fighting Scot program. He previously served as the head baseball coach at nearby Northwestern High School in Albion, and most recently, as the head baseball coach at Girard High School. Coach Kemling brings many years of baseball experi ence to the Scots and will be a major asset to the Edinboro baseball program. Stndent Assistant Matt SchiHz Matt Schultz enters his first season as a student assistant for coach Radovich. Schultz, who played under Radovich at Edinboro University (1993-96), played every position during his four years v^ith the Fighting Scots. A former AllConference player. Matt also was a team co-captain his senior year for the ‘Boro. His dedication and commitment to the baseball program provide the younger players with a positive role model. Matt is currently working on a degree in health and physical education. 1997 Edinboro University of Pennsyivania Fighting Scot Basebaii Team 3 1991 Edinboro Bosoboll Rostor Fighting Scots In The Pros # Name Since 1988, five Fighting Scots have been selected in the annual Major League Baseball Amateur draft, held each June. Four pitchers and one position player have signed major-league contracts with professional teams under head coach John Radovich’s tenure. In 1988, left-handed pitcher Tom Mathews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) became the first player under Radovich to be drafted, as he was chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mathews com piled a 4-5 record with the Scots in one season at Edinboro University before joining the Dodgers organization. I In 1993, first baseman Brad Aurila Tim Codd (Coraopolis, Pa.) became the second player to be drafted under Radovich, as he was chosen in the 38th round by the Montreal Expos. Aurila holds various career hitting and field ing records for the Fighting Scots, including most at bats (561), games (179) and putouts (1,099) Right-handed pitcher Pete Nyari (Erie, Pa.) was I selected in the 17th round of the draft in 1994 by the Philadelphia Phillies. Nyari, who has filled a closer role in the Mark Corey bullpen in his first three seasons of professional baseball, will begin 1997 in Piedmont, North Carolina, home of a Class A affiliate of the Phillies. Nyari shares the Edinboro school record for strikeouts in a season with 73, accomplishing that in only two seasons at EUR In 1995, two more right-handed pitchers were taken in the June draft as hurlers Mark Corey (Austin, Pa.) and Tim Codd (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) both signed with professional organizations. Corey, selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round, was the highest draft choice ever at Edinboro University. After two injury-plagued seasons with the Reds’ Princeton (Class A) affiliate, Corey has recovered from arm and shoulder injuries and will return to the diamond once Pete Nyari more in 1997. Corey, who shares the single-season strikeout record with Nyari, also holds Edinboro University career records for most wins (17), complete games (14) and strikeouts (154). Codd, a 46th round selection by the Texas Rangers in 1995, recorded a 7-1 record in his first season of professional baseball at Texas’ Class A affiliate Hudson Valley before suffering arm injuries in 1996. Codd also recorded 11 wins for the Scots in his four years in the Edinboro program. “It’s been a pleasure to coach and work with these players,” said Radovich. “I think it (being drafted) reflects not only the talent of the play ers themselves, but the caliber of competition that these players have been exposed to while at Edinboro University.” Pos BIT Ht Wt Cl Hometown/High School 7 Phillip Tingen IB/OF UL 5-11 165 Fr Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills 8 Jason Ray OF UR 5-8 140 Fr Verona, PA/Penn Hills 9 Shawn Hayes P/SS R/R 6-1 195 Fr Edinboro, PA/General McLane 10 Brendan Schulte SS S/R 5-11 180 Fr Tonowanda, N.Y./Tonowanda 11 Carl SeidI 2B R/R 5-9 196 Fr Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler 12 Ryan Anderson OF/IF R/R 6-0 190 So Imperial, PA/West Allegheny 13 Jon Vierkom IF/C R/R 6-1 215 Sr Edinboro, PA/General McLane 14 Jim Brown P R/R 6-1 175 Jr Ligonier, PA/Ligonier Valley 160 So Friedens, PA/Somerset Glenshaw, PA/Shaler 17 Chris Winters OF L/L 5-9 16 Frank Koch OF/C R/R 5-11 175 Fr 19 Josh Coakley C/P R/R 6-1 210 Jr Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls 20 James Kunkle C/1B R/R 5-10 195 Fr Apollo, PA/Kiski School 21 Ben Saylor 3B R/R 6-0 175 Jr Friedens, PA/Somerset 22 Jon Hunt OF/P R/R 6-1 160 Fr Erie, PA/McDowell 23 Ryan Woyicki P R/R 5-10 170 So McKean, PA/General McLane 24 Sean Rusko P/OF L/L 6-0 170 Jr Ambridge, PA/Ambridge R/R 6-2 180 Jr White Oak, PA/Serra Catholic 26 Jason Newhouse P 27 Chuck Diulus OF/IB R/R 6-3 185 Fr Pittsburgh, PA/Seton La Salle 29 Mike Carothers P/OF R/R 6-4 225 Jr Coraopolis, PA/West Allegheny 30 Chris Myers P L/L 6-1 205 Sr McKean, PA/General McLane 31 Todd Piazza OF/P R/R 5-9 175 Fr Frewsburg, N.Y./Frewsburg 32 Randy Powierza P R/R 6-2 170 Fr Erie, PA/Strong Vincent 33 Brian Junker SS R/R 6-1 205 So Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler 34 Brian Myers 1B/3B R/R 6-0 205 Fr Union City, PA/Mercyhurst Prep 35 RickAdsit P R/R 6-1 180 So Meadville, PA/Cochranton 38 Craig Kaufman P/IB L/L 6-0 200 Fr Erie, PA/Fort LeBoeuf 39 Bill Bendis P L/L 6-4 240 Fr Uniontown,PA/Laurel Highlands 40 Brad Kocher P/3B R/R 5-11 238 Fr Brookville, PA/Brookville 42 Wiliam Irons P/IB L/L 6-3 200 Fr Bradford, PA/Bradford Head Coach: John “Ace” Radovich Assistant Coach: Butch Kemling Student Assistant: Matt Schultz 4 5 Scots Shooting for Another Post-Season Berth Outfiuldurs Sophomore centerfielder Chris Winters will anchor the outfield in ‘97. Winters, who finished second on the Scots with a .366 batting average last season, was selected first-team All-North Atlantic Region last season. He also was named the PSAC “Rookie of the Year” in 1996. Winters should find himself at the top of the batting order, utilizing his speed and left-handed bat. Junior Sean Rusko, who also pitches for the ‘Boro, adds speed and another lefthanded bat in the lineup. Both Winters and Rusko were perfect last season on the basepaths, as the two would combine for 19 stolen bases in 19 attempts. Sophomore Ryan Anderson moves into the outfield after a very successful rookie campaign at second base last sea son. Anderson hit .275 in his first season at the Boro in 1996, after filling in at sec ond base for the injured Pat Donoghue. “Those three players give us tremen dous speed and versatility in the outfield,” said head coach John Radovich. “All of them also possess fine hitting mechanics and we are expecting solid seasons.” Radovich also recruited what he believes is a solid group of outfielders. Freshmen Frank Koch (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler), Jason Ray (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills) and Chuck Diulus (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton La Salle) all come from outstanding high school programs and are expected to challenge in 1997. “Those three come from some of the best programs in Pittsburgh,” said Radovich. “They have made tremendous strides in the transition to the collegiate game, which will warrant additional innings in the field for them this year.” Radovich also feels that this year’s crop of outfielders will be a major ^ctor in the Scots’ success. “We have improved our overall team speed in the outfield,” said Radovich. “We have both depth and quality at those three positions. As a group, our outfielders are very good con tact hitters, and it is going to be hard for opposing pitchers to keep them off base.” After reaching post-season play two straight seasons, the Edinboro baseball team ended its 1996 campaign on a posi tive note, hoping the momentum will carry over into this season. Last year’s young and inexperienced squad battled through a very tough sched ule, and while Edinboro failed to qualify for the playoffs, the Scots’ young players gained the experience and confidence needed to make another post-season run. “Last year our inexperience really showed, especially late in games,” said Radovich. “We led in a lot of games, that we should have won, but fell short. I think we have improved from last season, hope fully enough to challenge in the PSAC.” This season, the Scots will again count on the production and development of many talented underclassmen and new comers to the Edinboro Baseball program. With only two seniors on this year’s squad, the ‘Boro is hoping to build a solid foundation that will pave the way for future success. Coach Radovich lists the out field and the pitching staff as the team’s strength this season and is very optimistic about the potential of this year’s team. “This year we return a solid nucleus of players and have brought in quality recruits and transfers that we think will help our program,” said Radovich. “Our pitching staff and outfield are very deep and talented. We should be competitive.” The Schedule The Scots will open up the sea^n on March 1-2 in Buckhannon, W.V., compet ing against West Virginia Wesleyan. Edinboro will also play at Davis and Elkins (W.V.) before heading south to Ft. Myers, Florida for a 16-game stretch over spring break. PSAC West play opens up when the Scots travel to California University of Pa. on Saturday, March 29th. In all, the ‘Boro is scheduled to play 53 games from March 1 to May 3rd. The top two finishers in the PSAC’s Western and Eastern Divisions will qualify for the conference postseason tournament in May, with the winner receiving an auto matic bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. 6 Team Outlook Continued Infioldors Radovich’s infield also boasts both quality and depth in ‘97, as many players have the capability to play a variety of positions. Jon Vierkorn, one of two seniors on this season’s squad, will see action at both the corners in addition to spot catching duties. Vierkorn, one of the ‘Boro’s co-captains this season, will also provide leadership to the team’s younger players. He finished second in the confer ence in hitting last season with a .389 bat ting average. He was also selected sec ond-team All-PSAC West after serving in designated hitter and third base roles. Sophomore Brain Junker, a secondteam All-Conference selection last season as a freshman shortstop, returns to anchor the middle of the infield. Junker hit .339 and tied for a team-best 37 hits in 1996. Junior Ben Saylor, the team’s most consistent fielder the past two seasons also will see action at a variety of posi tions. Freshmen Carl SeidI (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) and Brendan Schulte (Towanda, N.Y./Towanda) both possess strong defensive skiils and could push for a starting role in the middle of the infield. With sophomore Mike Vidnansky out for the season with a knee injury, Brian Myers (Union City, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) and Phil Tingen (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills), along with Vierkorn, will compete for action at first base for Edinboro in 1997. “Phil has shown tremendous defense in the fall and-Brian has been hitting the ball well,” said Radovich. “ I think those two, along with Vierkorn, will all make the first base position very competitive.” “Again, having people agile enough to adjust to different positions in the infield, will allow us to be more flexible both offen sively and defensively.” “Our catching staff is also experienced and deep,” said Radovich. “They all have decent hitting skills and strong arms. I look for our younger catchers to push our veterans even more this season.” Pitching The Scots appear to have a solid pitching rotation to take the mound this season. Led by senior co-captain Chris Myers and juniors Mike Carothers and Sean Rusko, Edinboro will have three very experienced starters heading into the new season. Myers, who led the Scots in wins in 1996 with four, also had a team-best 3.81 era and 52 strikeouts. “Chris knows what it takes to produce at this level,” said Radovich. “He will be our go-to-guy this season. We are count ing on him to set an example for our younger players in the rotation." Rusko, when not playing in the Scots’ outfield last season, registered a 3-3 record with a 4.84 ERA. Carothers started last season for the first time in his colle giate career and will be in the rotation again in 1997. Right-hander Jason Newhouse, who saw action in eight games last season, has shown improve ment in the off-season. Jim Brown, another right-hander trans ferred from Westmoreland Co. CC. Brown will bring two solid years of experience to the Scots’ rotation and will provide leader ship to younger members of the staff. Sophomore Rick Adsit and Ryan Woyicki, both right-handers, have progressed in the off-season and look for additional innings this year. Freshmen Shawn Hayes (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) and Brad Kocher (Brookville, PA/Brookville) both are expected to make significant contributions to the Scots pitching staff in their rookie seasons. Freshmen Bill Bendis, Jon Hunt, Bill Irons, Craig Kaufman, Todd Piazza, and Randy Powierza round out Radovich’s’ pitching staff. “Overall, our staff throws the ball will pretty decent velocity,” said Radovich. “We have some experienced veterans and some promising newcomers as we enter the season. Our staff is very deep and will allow us to compete with any team in our conference this season.” Catching Several new faces will be behind the plate, among them junior college transfer Josh Coakley, who joins the Scots after playing two seasons at Penn-State Beaver. Coakley, also who pitches, pos sesses a strong arm and could push for time behind the plate. Vierkorn and fresh man Brendan Schulte could also see action at catcher, when not playing infield. 7 1991 Team Captains Returning Player Profiles 13 Jon Vierkorn 21 Ben Saylor C/IF • 6-1 • 215 • Sr. Edinboro.l PA/General McLane 3B • 6-0 • 175 • Jr. Friedens, PA/Somerset At Edinboro; finished second in the PSAC in batting average last season, hitting .389...selected second-team All-PSAC as a desig nated hitter in 1996...led Edinboro in RBI’s (29) and slugging per centage (.600)...In High School: team finished 17-3 senior season, capturing ECL crown...batted .300 senior year...lettered two years in both baseball and tennis...Personal; son of George and Beverly Vierkorn...born 2-1-75...elementary/special education major At Edinboro; has played both shortstop and third base positions in first two seasons...appeared in 39 games as a sophomore last sea son, and sported a .420 on base percentage...also drove in 17 runs...possesses strong defensive skills...will be counted upon to provide leadership in 1997...In High School: lettered all four years in baseball...also lettered four years in soccer...Personal; son of Chris and Gail Saylor...born 5-3-76...psychology major 30 Chris Myers LHP • 6-1 • 205 • Sr. McKean, PA/General McLane At Edinboro: led the Scots' staff in wins in 1996, going 4-4... had a team-low 3.81 era...also led EUP staff in complete games (6) and strikeouts (52) in last season...In High School: team finished 17-2 senior season, winning ECL Championship...lettered three years in baseball and four years in wrestling...Personal; son of Frank and Jean Myers...born 3-12-75...special education major Returning Player Profiles 12 Ryan Anderson OF/IF • 6-0 • 190 • So.
