EDINBORO STATE CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK 1973-1974 "Running Scots"—Depth, Talent, Desire 1974 Track Outlook Graduation claimed ESC's most prolific point scorer in David Antognoli—a 1972 Olympic Trials Finalist in the 10,000 meters; six-time ALL AMERICAN; and a two-time National Champion. However, a solid nucleus of lettermen return to bolster the Scots' chances of repeating the District and State Team Championships they claimed last season. Senior John Walker returns intent on improving his 4th place National finish in the 440 Intermediate Hurdles and in lowering his school record in the Highs. Last season's frosh sensation, Mike Drozin, the Kentucky Relays winner in the High jump, and a 5th place National finisher, hopes to conquer the 7'0" barrier this time around. 1972 Pa. State sprint champions William Waros (100) and Dan Swanson (220) return to give their team considerable depth in the shorter races. Mark Roche begins his second real year of running and will be pointing to lower his two school standards in the mile and 880 yd. runs. Depth is evident in the middle distance runners as a fine group of freshmen should handle their responsibilities more than adequately aided by a seasoned group of upperclassmen. Frosh Lou Champney, Kevin Foley, Joe Come, Pat Maher, Mark Ladika, Dennis Packard, and a lot of others should be tough. Experienced personnel counted upon include Gary Gotsch, Steve Turk, and John Foreman. The field events, always an Edinboro weakpoint, are definitely upgraded with the addition of some fine personnel. School recprd holder Kim Oddi returns to action after a year's absense. State H.S. javelin champ Bob Staab and 3rd place finisher Mike Pancerov could prove out as the squad's best recruits. Sophomore pole vaulter Rick Motter also is looking to improve his standard by June, as triple jumper Chuck Jones zeroes in on the ESC barrier. "I know we have good experienced Trackmen, and they should be supported admirably by the newcomers," explained Coach Watts. "If the freshmen recruits live up to their potentials, I think we can be pretty tough. Our squad's team spirit is the key to our success, and right now, I see no reason to question the continuance of that tradition of excellence." Scots Win With Watts In his fifth year of coaching at Edinboro, Doug Watts continues to bring national distinction to his track and cross country teams. A collegiate middle distance and cross country runner for the University of Akron, Watts was a vital cog in Zip teams that lost only one dual meet in his four-year span and fin ished as NCAA college division runners-up in cross country. After graduate work. Watts launched both his coaching career and Walsh Jesuit High's running sports program. His two year record at the Ohio school showed winning campaigns in track and his cross country team finished unbeaten both years while winning the district title. In 1969, the youthful coach moved to Edinboro initiating cross country as a varsity sport and began building the track program. In that short span, ESC has become well known for its distance men and outstanding track per formers. Coach Watts' career cross country record stands at an outstanding 56 wins and only 9 losses, while his four Edinboro track squads have recorded a 16-6-1 log. The Scots completed their finest season this past fall as the running Scots went 10-0 in dual meets, captured District and State Championships, and finished third in the NAIA National Meet. The 1973 trackmen boasted a fine 6-1 record, also boasted the District and State titles, and placed three men in the scoring column at the National Championship. The Edinboro mentor, named district cross country and district track coach of the year this past season, was recently honored by being nominated as an assistant coach for the United States track team at the 1976 Olympics. Watts, his wife, Susan, and their two children, Wendy, five and Chris, three, reside in Edinboro.
