The philosophy of athletics at Edinboro is considered an inte gral part of the institutional program of education which provides experiences that will help develop the physical, mental, and emo tional aspects of the student. Students are stimulated to want to win and excel, but the principles of good sportsmanship prevail at alt times to enhance the educational values of the contest. The Edinboro University Athletic Department believes that par ticipation is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the college, the team, and the students themselves. These experiences also contribute to the knowledge, skill and emotional pattern that our students possess, thereby making them better persons and citizens. FIGHTING SCOT ATHLETICS The Fighting Scots compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division I and II. Edinboro's highly competitive athletic program consists of 19 varsity level sports: Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor), and wrestling; Women: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball. I Head Coach Gary Kagiavas \ Edinboro University of Pennsylvania appointed Gary Kagiavas as head coach of the Fighting Scots women’s soccer program in August of 1996. In addition to his coaching duties at Edinboro, Kagiavas has served as the coaching director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club for the past two years. Under his direction, the organiza tion has grown from four to 11 teams, and in the 1997-98 season, he took the 15-under team to the state finals. Kagiavas has a wealth of playing and coaching expe rience, both locally and at the international level, and joined the Edinboro staff after serving as assistant man ager of the Family First Sports Park in Erie, Pa., since October of 1994. Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon University from 1987-91, and played professionally in his native South Africa, Greece and Canada after earning his bachelor’s degree in 1991. He has held a variety of coaching positions at many levels of competition since 1989, highlighted by a successful stint as a professional coach in South Africa and a year as an assistant coach at Gannon. While at Family First, Kagiavas was responsible for organizing all phases of the facility’s indoor and outdoor soccer leagues, serving as tournament director for more than eight tournaments a year. Kagiavas was assistant tournament director for the 210team Flagship Cup tournament, hosted by Edinboro University, and also coached the Erie Admirals, a new premier soccer club. In 1994, Kagiavas was the head coach of Gannon’s men’s junior varsity soccer pro gram, directing the team to its first winning record ever, an 8-5-3 mark. He assisted head coach Marco Koolman with the varsity squads as the Golden Knight men posted a 15-2 overall record while advancing to the NCAA Final Four, as well as assisted with Gannon’s women’s program while coaching the 18-and-under Erie Strikers soccer club. Kagiavas has been involved in coaching since 1989, when he began coaching the Erie Strikers and also coached at Villa Maria Elementary School, guiding the team to an 11-2-2 record, its first-ever winning mark. Between 1989 and 1994, Kagiavas coached at numerous camps and served as the assistant director at several tournaments. In the spring of 1992, he was head coach of the Springs (South Africa) Old Boys of the Division I men’s semiprofessional league, earning Coach of the Year honors. In the summer of 1991, Kagiavas was head coach of the Boksburg “Two for Joy” Division II team that competed in the National Soccer League of South Africa. Kagiavas has earned a South African coaching license as well as a professional referee license. Head Coach Gary Kagiavas Prior to his coaching career, Kagiavas was a four-year starter at Gannon, helping the Golden Knights advance to two NCAA Division II Final Four tournament appearances (1989 and 1990) and a pair of Elite Eight berths (1987 and 1988). He also has played professionally, competing for a St. Catherines team that won the Canadian Cup in the National Soccer League. Kagiavas was a player/coach for the Springs Old Boys and Boksburg “Two for Joy,” as well as for the Eastern Transvaal all-select indoor team. Gary and his wife. Dawn, a native of St. Marys, Pa., have a daughter, Kaylee, who is twoyears old. Graduate Assistant Coach Stacie Bortz Stacie Bortz enters her first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Fighting Scots. Bortz is a May 1998 graduate of Mercyhurst College where she was a four-year starter in goal for the Lakers. Bortz led the '94 Lakers to the NCAA Division II Final Four and in ‘95 to the semi-finals of the NCAA tourna ment. Bortz was also the starting shortstop on the Mercyhurst softball team. Bortz has a bachelor’s degree in Human Ecology with a minor in Elementary Education. She has coached on the youth level for the past two years, specializing as a goalkeeper coach. Assistant Coach Tony Terini Tony Turin! is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Fighting Scots. His playing experience consists of four years at Carbondale Community High School; he then went on to compete for nearby Gannon University. Tony has been coaching for the past four years at the youth level. He currently coaches for the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club in addition to his duties at Edinboro University. 1998 Season Outlook 1998 SEASON... Entering into the program's third year of competition, the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team is closer than ever to achieving their goal of being a consistent, experienced, and all-around tal ented squad. With the return of the first recruiting class of head coach Gary Kagiavas and the addition of some very capable recruits, the 1998 edition of the Fighting Scots will look for steady improvement as the return ing experience combines with new talent. "Last year we had seven freshmen in our starting lineup," said Coach Kagiavas. "The 1997 season was so physically and mentally demanding - I think our returning players will be able to raise their level of play this season as a result of that experience." THE SCHEDULE... This season Edinboro has upgraded their schedule once more, playing five teams which were ranked in the top 20 in NCAA Division II at the end of last sea son, including national championship runners-up West Virginia Wesleyan College, East Stroudsburg University of PA (11th), Mercyhurst College (17th), Bloomsburg University of PA (18th), and Lock Haven University of PA (20th). Edinboro has added nationally ranked Mercyhurst College, Malone College, St. Vincent College and Concord University to its schedule this season, all strong teams which will chal lenge the Fighting Scot squad to play at new levels. "We are striving to play as good competition as possible - it pushes us to improve our skills and to toughen us men tally," said Kagiavas. Last season, the Fighting Scots proved their ability to compete with nationally competitive teams, defeating Wheeling Jesuit College (then ranked 13th nationally), 4-3, in double overtime. In fact, Edinboro played in five overtime games last sea son, with four of those going into two extra periods. According to Kagiavas, those games did make some difference in the outcome of last year season, "If we had split those games, we would be at .500-percent - if we had won, we would have had a winning record." RETURNERS... The Fighting Scots return 13 players from the 1997 unit, all of whom will look to raise the team's level of play this season. At midfield, Edinboro returns AllPennsyvlania State Athletic Conference player Alyssa Murosky. Murosky netted 10 goals and four assists last season as a freshman, the team's second-leading scor er. Murosky has shown she has the ability to be a big scorer for Edinboro, con tributing four goals and two assists to the team's 12-1 victory over LaRoche College last season. She will be joined in the midfield by sophomores Beth Christopher (two goals, four assists), Sali Frndak (three goals, two assists), whose overtime goal lift ed the Scots, over Wheeling Jesuit last season, and Trish Meshanko (2 goals). 1998 Season Outlook Returning forwards for the Edinboro squad include Megan Snyder and Sarah Kramer. Snyder will be counted on once more to be a scorer for the Fighting Scots. Last season, Snyder led the team in points with nine goals and eight assists (26 total points), including three goals versus LaRoche College and two against Notre Dame (OH) College. Kramer, who began her career with Edinboro last season after red-shirting a year, served as the team's co-captain and netted six goals and five assists in 17 matches. Edinboro returns the most experience on the defensive side of the field. Six defenders will return to wear the Edinboro jersey. The skills and intensity of junior Cara Peyton, the team's leading scorer in 1996 and the third leading scorer in 1997, will most likely be utilized in a defensive role this season, possibly at sweeper. Juniors Lisa Blackhurst, Dory Isgan, Jessica Hatton and Jessalynn Rodgers also return, each with two year's experience. Blackhurst, who is also a key member of the Fighting Scot softball team, played in 17 of the team's 18 contests last season. Isgan possesses tremendous speed, and is also a proven scorer. Hatton and Rodgers will both vie for increased action once again this season. In goal, this season is perhaps one of the strongest for the Fighting Scots. Both of last year's goalkeepers return for the 1998 season. Denna lammarino and Meighan Gast, who shared goalkeeping responsibilities last year, combined for a 2.61 goals against average, lammarino recorded 82 saves in 960 minutes of action in 1997. Gast grabbed 86 saves in 740 minutes. "Having a good goalkeeping base is one of the most important aspects of a successful team," said Coach Kagiavas, optimistic about Edinboro's chances at a winning season in part due to the presence of this experienced tandem. NEWCOMERS... A number of key recruits will contribute additional aggressiveness and scoring capabilities to this year's women's soccer squad. At midfield, Amy Lindsey (Allison Park, PA/Hampton), Corinne Bruno (Waterford, PA/General McLane), Susan Buchanich (Allison Park, PA/Hampton), and Kim Hoyt (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) will all compete for playing time. Amy Hazen (Erie, PA/lroquois) will push for a forward posi tion, and Bruno could also make a run for action at the same spot. Defensively, Carrie Williams (McKean, PA/General McClane) and Elizabeth Glecos (Erie, PA/McDowell) will challenge the returnees for a starting position. Jillian Campbell (Indiana, PA/Indiana Area) will be looking for time in goal. This year's focus is all-around. With the addition of some new offensive talent, improv ing scoring capabilities will be a major aspect of this season's game. Solidifying the defense will also be a key focus of the squad this season, and could revolve around the redefinition of roles for some of the most talented players on the field.
