At Family First, he was responsi ble for organizing all phases of the facility's indoor and outdoor soccer leagues. Kagiavas was assistant tournament director for the 210team Flagship Cup tournament. Kagiavas has served as the coaching director of the Edinboro Regional Soccer Club. Under his direction, the organization has grown from four to 14 teams. In the 199798 season, he took the 15-under team to the state finals. The past two summers he has taken the Erie Admirals U17 Girls team to the state championship and to the Final Four of Region 1. The team has finished in the top 16 in the covmtry in their age group. He is the girls coaching director at the Erie Admirals. In 2004 Kagiavas had two more state champi ons with die Erie Admirals in the Under-17 and Under-18 girls teams. This marks four state champions in four years. Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon from 1987-91, and played profession ally in his native South Africa, along with Greece and Canada, after earning his bache lor's degree in 1991. He has held a variety of coaching positions in many levels of competi tion since 1989, highlighted by a successful stint as a professional coach in South Africa. At Gannon, Kagiavas was a four-year starter at midfield and defender for a Golden Knight team which advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1989 and 1990. Gannon was 58-14-8 during his four seasons, with three NCAA playoff appear ances. Kagiavas played professionally for a St. Catherines team that won the Canadian Cup in the National Soccer League. He was a play er/ coach for the Springs Old Boys and Bofeburg 'Two for Joy,' as well as for the Eastern Transvaal all-select indoor team. In 1994, Kagiavas served as the head coach of Gannon's men's junior varsity soccer program, also assisting with the varsity squad as the Golden Knight men posted a 152-0 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Kagiavas began his coaching career with the Erie Strikers while also directing the Villa Maria Elementary School team. In the spring of 1992, Kagiavas was assistant coach of the Boksburg "Two for Joy" Division I team that competed in the National Soccer League of South Africa. In the summer of 1991, he was the head coach of the Springs (South Africa) Old Boys of the Division II men's semi-pro fession^ league, earning Coach of the Year honors. Kagiavas has earned a South African coaching license, a professional referee license, and his United States Soccer Federation National B License and has his NSCAA Regional Coaching License. He serves as the vice president for the FSAC Soccer Committee and is a member of the regional NSCAA ranking committee. In addi tion, he is the chairman of the NCAA Regional Ranking Committee for the Northeast Region. He and his wife. He is currently com pleting work on his degree in Elementary Education/Special Education and Psychology, with a minor in Coaching. A year ago Tekotte set school records for goals scored (21) and points (48) in a season. She was a first team All-Northeast Region and All-PSAC selection. In addition, she ranked second in the PSAC in points, points per game, goals, and goals per game, and was 13th in Division 11 in goals per game and 15th in points per game. Tekotte concluded her career ranked first in goals scored (37) and second in career points (85) despite playing just three seasons for the Fitting Scots. She played at Central Michigan as a freshman. A former standout at nearby McDowell High School, she was also a first team AllPSAC choice and second team All-Region selection in 2001. Edinboro University Womens Soccer 2004 page 4 Kagiavas Looks for Youth, Speed to Carry Fighting Scots to PSAC Playoffs ^A^orking with a youthful roster is nothing new for Edinboro University head coach Gary Kagiavas. But even he has to shake his head with how young his 2004 Fighting Scots are. Coupled with a need to replace the team's top five scorers, who accounted for 35 of the team's 47 goals, plus a schedule that is loaded with challenges, it's easy to say why there's a bit of uneasiness as Kagiavas enters his ninth year at Edinboro. "The biggest dilemma for us is that we'll be yovmg," admitted Kagiavas. "We lose nine starters from last year and then some of the kids we anticipated to step in are going into their junior years with serious majors and don't have the time. We have to count on freshmen to perform immediately. We lose a whole lot of leadership from last year. I'm not sure because we're young how we'll respond. That's the great unlmown." Kagiavas guided the Fighting Scots to a 12-7-1 record a year ago, a school record for Liz Soeder wins. Edinboro qualified for the PSAC Playoffs for the second time. With a roster dotted with 12 freshmen and five sophomores, it would be easy for Kagiavas to characterize 2004 as a rebuilding year. Instead, he fully expects the Fighting Scots to push for their fifth straight winning season. "We're pretty athletic, and we're used to winning," Kagiavas emphasized. "1 think we should be okay. We may trip up a couple times just because of our inexperience. But 1 think we're pretty set for the next three to four years. "There will be some growing pains, though," he cautioned. "This class coming in has five or six kids immediately ready to play." A year ago Kagiavas was lamenting the loss of most of his scoring punch. Jamie Tekotte stepped up and scored a school record 21 goals to solve that problem. Tekotte will now be on the sideline assisting Kagiavas, leaving a huge void. "We've gone out and gotten a ton of kids who were able to score goals," Kagiavas pointed out. "Whether or not they can do it at this level remains to be seen. We're hoping to have five or six players who can score goals, instead of just one." The ability to score was one characteris tic inherent in the recruiting class. The other is speed. "We actively recruited speed," com mented Kagiavas. "1 thought our overall team speed last year wasn't that impressive." Finally, Kagiavas brought in a class that expects to win, having done so on a regular basis in high school and on club teams. The schedule will have a new look in 2004 as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has split into East and West Divisions, with home-and-home dates. The PSAC Playoffs remains at six teams, with three from the East and three from the West. As usual, the PSAC looks to be very strong. In addition, Kagiavas did his yoimg team no favors with an ambitious non-confer ence slate. "We play Shippensburg, Kutztown, Bridgeport, Southampton, Edinboro University Women’s Soccer 2004 pages 2004 Outlook Mercyhurst and Gannon outside of the con ference," he related. "For the most part all were regionally ranked, and some nationally ranked." All told, eight of the 12 teams on Edinboro's schedule had winning records in 2003. Kagiavas figures that if his young squad is to m^e its second straight appearance in the PSAC Playoffs, it must get the best of Slippery Rock, Indiana(Pa.), or Lock Haven. Slippery Rock is the defending PSAC cham pion, finishing with a 15-3-2 record following an appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Edinboro opens the 2004 campaign in the Shippensburg Invitational on Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28. The Fighting Scots will face two of the favorites in the PSAC East in Shippensburg and Kutztown, a team which went 14-4-3 last year and played in the NCAA Playoffs. Goalkeepers A year ago Abbey Mortus and Trish Chilcott shared time in goal, and that will likely be the case this year as well. Mortus, a senior co-captain, finished with an 8-4-0 record and a 1.44 GAA. She is a seasoned goalkeeper who has won 18 games in goal for her career and has a .130 career GAA. Chilcott, a junior who just picked up the position last year, was 4-3-1 with a 1.07 GAA. "I think our goalkeeping will be very solid with Abby and Trish," assured Kagiavas. The two combined for four shutouts and will ben efit from working with Mark Case. Freshman Katie Barbour will redshirt. 2004 Outlook We lose a lot." Jessica Falconer also has experience in the backfield. The junior played in 14 match es a year ago, but could see limited practice time due to her major in nursing. Becky Hostettler only appeared in three matches last year, but the junior had a solid spring. In addition, Kagiavas could move Kathy Lantzy from the midfield. A junior, Lant^ has played in 34 career matches. Kagiavas looks for a number of freshmen to step in. Daryl Estremera earned all-confer ence honors while playing at Olmsted Falls (OH) High School. Kim Koricich and Rachel Seth are from nearby General McLane High School, in addition to playing on the Erie Admirals team which won the PA State U-17 championship last year. Midfielders Despite the return of senior co-captain Stacie Potter, who started 19 matches last year, and junior Lisa Guesman, who started 11, the midfield will also see an infusion of youth. Potter registered one assist while Guesman ranks as the top returning scorer with a goal Coastal Carolina before transferring this spring. A first team all-state selection and an NSCAA All-Region choice as a prepster at Clear Fork (OH) High School, she broke the school record for career goals with 80. Wolf appeared in four games for the Lady Chanticleers, scoring one goal. The other transfer is Stacy Hyziewicz. The sophomore did not play soccer at Rhode Island. Instead, she competed in track & field. She is another of the local players from General McLane High School, where she set Erie County League records in the 100 and 200 meters. Freshmen Angie de Almeida and Katie DeLuca will also compete for playing time at forward. Forwards Liz Soeder and Kristen Manfredi are the lone returning players up front. Soeder played in all 20 matches, with a goal and 2 assists. Illness and injury forced Manfredi to miss all but one contest. Speed, speed, and more speed. That's Kagiavas' emphasis up front. "I think we've added ridiculous speed," exclaimed Kagiavas. A pair of freshmen and two transfers provide the speed Kagiavas mentioned. Kara Ciacchini is a former standout at McDowell High School who was a three-time All-Metro League selection. A proven scorer, Ciacchini accoimted for 48 career goals and 34 assists. The other freshman is Erruly Monte from Fairport (NY) High School. Shauna Wolf played one season at Defenders While Kagiavas entered 2003 fearful of a scoring shortage, he was calmed in the knowledge that the defense returned two starters and a pair of part-time starters. That is not the case this year. Save for senior co captain Maura Sansone, the backfield is very inexperienced. "It's what concerns me," admitted Kagiavas. "Last year we were so solid. Maura is the key to everything as our sweep er. We'll count on her to get us through. The last two years we were very strong in back. Edinboro University Women’s Soccer 2004 cind 3 assists for 5 points. Several other returnees will provide experience. Junior Chelsea Lawrence added a pair of goals in 13 matches, but she is a nutri tion major and will be miss a great deal of time. Fdlon Frye, a senior and another of the potential academic casualties as a forensic chemistry major, played in 17 matches with 2 assists, ^nior Becky Hicho also played in 17 matches and had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Amy DiVincenzo appeared in 10 contests. In many instances Kagiavas isn't even sure where his newcomers will play, noting that he has an idea where players will fit in but that things could change when they report for camp. However, he does expect first-year play ers Elise Falatach and Mary Grebenc to play key roles, along with redshirt freshman Ashley Pulman. Falatach was an NSCAA AllAmerican at Bay (OH) High School, helping the Rockets win a pair of Ohio state champi onships. Grebenc's Strongsville (OH) High School was the 2002 Ohio Division I state champion and the 2003 runnerup. Pulman is a native of Ontario who came in a year ago with impressive credentials before siiffering a tom anterior cruciate ligament during hie summer. Her return will greatly bolster the midfield. Freshman Heather Coy is another player capable of earning plenty of playing time. page 6 Edinboro University Women’s Soeeer 2004 Kathy Lantzy page 7 Meet the Fighting Scots Meet the Fighting Scots majoring in Forensic Chemistry ... as a senior scored three goals for Northeastern Senior High School, but contributed 8 goals and 8 assists as a junior and 12 goals and an assist as a freshman ... missed sophomore year with an injury. 9Fallon Frye Midfielder Senior Dover, PA Northeastern HS Solid midfielder with good speed and great crossing ability... playing time could be limit ed due to academic commitments as a Forensic Chemistry major. 2003: Appeared in 17 matches, finishing with a pair of assists ... both assists came in a 4-0 win over Dominican. 2002: Played in 13 matches, with one start, scoring a goal along with an assist for 3 points ... first career goal came against Point Park. 2001: Appeared in 5 matches in a reserve role.
