Theodore Roosevelt President of the United States 1901-1909 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME BANQUET 7:00 p.m. April 28,1984 Van Houten Dining Hall Edinboro University took a historic step in its athletic program two years ago with the induction of 18 individuals into its newly created Athletic Hall of Fame. The University honored 18 charter members who had distinguished themselves in their associations with athletics at Edinboro either by virtue of their performances or by their meritorious efforts on behalf of the University's athletic program. Tonight, the Fighting Scots Athletic Department takes special pride, once again, by honoring eight new members with their induction into the Hall of Fame. Each new inductee or representative will be presented a plaque which identifies his or her athletic service to the University. A duplicate plaque will be placed in the Athletic Hall of Fame trophy case located in the lobby of McComb Fieldhouse. As an added highlight, Edinboro University will also present its annual Outstanding Administrative/Faculty Contributor, Coach of the Year and Senior Athletes of the Year awards. Twice a Pennsylvania Conference grappling champion and a conference First Team defensive tackle in football. J. |. (JACK) McCURRY, 1972 — Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania His outstanding football career at Edinboro where he set a season interception record (8) and the mark (85 yards) for the longest scoring punt return. An All-American and All-Conference defensive back who played on the best football team in Edinboro's history and was equally successful in the classroom where he was salutatorian of his class. JERRY MIFSUD, 1973 — Erie, Pennsylvania His spectacular performances in baseball at Edinboro where he set eight records In a single season among which were a .417 batting average and seven stolen bases in a single game while leading the Scots to their best year in history. Was the Pennsylvania Conference's top All-Star vote getter and was named the MVP In the Tri-State Coaches Association All-Star game before joining the pro ranks. KEITH NICOLLS, 1951 ~ Springboro, Pennsylvania His outstanding representation of Edinboro as both a student athlete, a professional athlete, teacher and coach. Started every game for three consecutive years on Sox Harrison-coached teams where he was a leading scorer as a playmaker. Owns a spectacular 72-29 semi-pro pitching record and guided Conneaut Valley High School to a highly impressive 128-34 win-loss mark in seven seasons. OSCAR PALMQUIST, 1934 — Erie, Pennsylvania (Deceased) His outstanding leadership and performances in basketball during one of the most successful sports eras in Edinboro’s early athletic history. A member of Ed in boro's best basketball team (1931-32,12-1) that won the Western Conference title. A nationally recognized pioneer in women's sports. JACK WEIXEL, 1950 — Allison Park, Pennsylvania His unparalled accomplishments in wrestling at Edinboro following service to his country in WWII. The only wrestler In Edinboro history to win three Pennsylvania Conference championships (128 lbs.) while also claiming the famed "Four-1" tourney title In Cleveland, Ohio. Regis "Sox" Harrison with his induction as the first member of the Athletic Hall of Fame. Sox was the key figure In the building of Edinboro's athletic program where he unselfishly devoted 34 years of service to the University as an athletic director, coach and physical education instructor. Sox, who was an outstanding athlete himself, has been friends with a long list of legendary sports figures which include such prominent people as Jim Thorpe, "Pop" Warner, Connie Mack and Joe McCarthy, ironically it was McCarthy, a roommate with Harrison at Niagara University where he starred In both baseball and football who gave "Sox" his nickname. McCarthy first gave him the tag In the early 1900's, after Indian baseball star Louis Socksalexis for whom the Cleveland Indians were named. THE EDINBORO UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME PURPOSE To recognize the men and women who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics, either by virtue of their performance on athletic teams representing Edinboro University, or by meritorious efforts In behalf of athletics at Edinboro. CRITERIA 1. An athlete must have earned a letter in a varsity sport. 2. The nominee such as athlete, coach, athletic administrator, must have demonstrated good citizenship, both in school and after leaving the University. 3. An athlete must have been out of school a minimum of ten years. 4. Coach, athletic administrator, or other nominee, graduate or not, who has performed meritorious service for or in behalf of the athletic program of the University. No less than three recipients, nor more than eight, may be elected to the Hall of Fame in a single year, excluding the first year, which would allow the selection committee to select no more than twenty. There is no limit, however, to the times a nominee may be considered for the Hall of Fame. 5. Nominating committee shall consist of the members of the Athletic Hail of Fame Board. The nominating committee shall solicit and receive written recommendations with supporting evidence for nominees from Edinboro University Alumni and members of the Edinboro University athletic staff by February 1st of each year. 6. Nominees must receive more than 70% of the Hall of Fame committee's tabulated vote.
