Prior to the Southern trip, Edinboro had won three consecutive contests and seven of its last eight games. West Virginia Wesleyan enters Friday’s game with a 3-4 overall record. The Bobcats, which haven’t played in nearly a month, have won two straight games, defeating Glenville State on Dec. 5 and West Virginia State on Dec. 9. SCOTS UPDATE Edinboro lost both games in the Florida Southern College Tournament last weekend, dropping a 96-57 decision to the host Lady Moccasins in the opener, and an 85-82 overtime contest to Indiana University ofPA in the consolation game. The Scots then lost 82-69 at Eckerd College Monday night (Jan. 2). Several Edinboro players had solid individual outings in Florida. Sophomores Heather Gates and Rhani Rochon had big games against Il)P. Rochon scored a career-high 25 points, while Gates added 21 points and a career-best 22 rebounds, the highest total in the PS AC this year. Freshman point guard Meghan Miller led the Scots with 19 points atEckerd. Senior guard Lori Montgomery, who was second on the team in scoring after 10 games, did not play in the three Florida games (academic suspension). She is expected to return to action Friday. He enters Friday’s game with a 142-91 record (.584) with the Scots. Swank has led EUP to a pair of PSAC-West tides, three NCAA Division II tournament berths, and the best season in school history, a 27-3 mark in 1989-90. CHAIR OF BOARDS With 35 rebounds in her last two games (22 vs. lUP followed by 13 at Eckerd), Gates is now averaging 12.5 rebounds per game for the season, the best average in the PS AC and one of the best averages in NCAA Division II. Her 22-rebound effort last week was the fourth time this season she has grabbed 15 or more boards. Gates had 21 rebounds in the season-opener, 15 against nationaUy-ranked St. Rose College, and 17 against Gannon University. Tip-ofif is set for 6:00 p.m. The game will be the first of two meetings this season between the two schools, as the Scots and Indians will face off again on Feb. 12, in Indiana, Pa. The Fighting Scots (11-5 overall, 2-0 PS AC-West) are led by lOth-year head coach Stan Swank, who posted his 161st career victory at Edinboro last Saturday (Jan. 11) afternoon (an 82-70 win vs. Lock Haven University) to become Edinboro’s all-time winningest coach. With the win. Swank surpassed former EUP coach Judy Saurer (1966-80), who previously owned that distinction with 160 career wins. In the win vs. the Lady Eagles, sophomore guard Meghan Miller scored a game-high 25 points for the Scots. In her last two games. Miller has averaged 26 points, three rebounds and three assists, while shooting 2324 form the ffee-throw line. Junior forward Amy Rapelje, who had a game-high 16 rebounds against Lock Haven, is currently second in the PS AC in field goal percentage, shooting 104-191 (.545). Junior forward Heather Gates continues to lead the conference in rebounding (14.1 rpg). Gates also is tops in scoring (16.4 ppg) for Edinboro. Freshman guard Jessica Rowe was selected the PSAC-West “Rookie of the Week” for the second straight week. In the Scots’ wins over Slippery Rock (81-72, on Jan. 8) and Lock Haven, Rowe averaged 12.5 points and two rebounds. The Scots, who boast five players with double-digit scoring averages, average a conference-best 84.9 points per game. Defensively, Edinboro is allowing opponents only 70.4 per contest. Last season, Edinboro and lUP faced each other three times. The Indians won the first two (85-82 in overtime in the Florida Southern Tournament and 89-79 at Edinboro), while the Scots won the most recent meeting between the two schools (83-80, at Indiana on Feb. 14). Indiana (6-8 overall, 1-1 PSAC-West), is led by first-year head coach Sandy Thomas, a former assistant coach at the University of Michigan. The Indians dropped a 70-47 decision to California University of Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 11. Sophomore guard Theresa Kabala scored a game-high 20 points for lUP in the loss. On the season, Kabala is lUP’s leading scorer, at 13.4 points per game, and currently ranks second in fi-ee-throw percentage in the PSAC, connecting on 36 of 42 (.857) attempts. Other top players for the Indians include; freshman forward Megan Smith, who is eighth in the PSAC in rebounding (8.9 rpg) and Jody Frederick (7.6 rpg, 1.7 blkpg). The Fitting Scots (12-5 overall, 3-0 PS AC-West) enter the contest in first-place. The Scots, led by tenth year head coadi Stan Swank, have won six games in a row and eight of their last 10. In their most recent contest, the Fitting Scots defeated Indiana University (Pa.), 79-61 on Jan. 15 at McComb Fieldhouse. Sophomore guard M^han Miller led the Scots’ offense with a game-high 28 points. Mller has averaged 27 points in her last three games, and has made 25 of her last 26 (96%) free-throw attempts! Junior forward Heather Gates, who entered the week second in NCAA Division II rebounding, pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds for the Scots in the win over lUP. Gates, who is also the PSAC’s leading rebounder, is now averaging 14.3 rebounds a game. The Fighting Scots lead the PSAC in scoring offense and averaging 84.6 points a game to rank seventh among NCAA Division II schools in points per contest. Last year, Edinboro fell to the Red Raiders in both games, dropping a 93-84 decision at Shippensburg and a 96-84 setback in Edinboro. Senior guard Shauna Nevel led the Scots in scoring in both games with 29 and 20 points, respectively. Junior guard Melissa Swartz scored a game-high 30 points in SUP’s home win, while 1995-96 PSAC “Player of the Year” Tracy Spencer scored 28 for the Red Raiders in the ‘Ship’s victory at Edinboro. Edinboro is 8-2 at McComb Fieldhouse this season. Shippensburg (13-2, 2-0) claimed the PSAC championship last season and became the first PSAC women’s school to advance to the NCAA Division II title game, where they dropped a 104-78 decision to North Dakota State University. Ship ended its season with a sdiool-best 28-6 overall record. The Raiders, led by 1996 PSAC “Coach of the Year” Dave Smith, eiter Saturday’s game as the No. 1 ranked team in the East Region. Smith owns a 120-62 (.659) record as head coach of the Raiders, and is 286-108 (.726) in his 15 years as a coll^ate head coach. In their last game, the Red Raiders defeated Lock Havoi University, 83-67 on Jan. 15 in Shippensburg. At 6:00 p.m at McComb Fieldhouse. The Scots (17-7 overall, 8-2 PSAC-West) enter the contest in second place in the PSAC-West. Edinboro has clinched a berth in the PSAC’s postseason tournament, but with two conference dates remaining the seedings are yet to be determined. Along with the Scots, Shippensburg (8-2 PSAC-West), California (7-3) and Clarion (6-4), all have clinched spots in tiie conference tournament that begins Tuesday (Feb. 24) night. In the first meeting between the two schools this season (Jan. 29), Clarion rallied fi-om as many as 17 points down to defeat the Scots, 64-62. Despite a double-double (24 points, 16 rebounds) performance by Edinboro junior forward Heather Gates, the Golden Eagles handed the Scots their first conference setback of the season. Junior guard Dana Nelson scored a team-high 18 points for CU in the victory. Last season, Edinboro and Clarion split the season series as the Scots defeated the Eagles 79-76 in Edinboro and dropped a 99-84 decision at Clarion. The ‘Boro holds a 24-18 edge in all-time victories between the two schools. In their last game, the Scots defeated Indiana (Pa.) on the road, 64-53 to capture a PSAC postseason tournament berth. Sophomore Meghan Miller led the Scots’ attack with 16 points. Junior forward Heather Gates, the leading rebounder in NCAA-Division II (14.8 rpg), recorded her sixth 20-plus rebound game of the season, as she gathered a game-high 20 boards for the Scots. SCOT NOTES: Gates now is second in career rebounds with 900, trailing only Montique Wade (1,113) on the all-time rebounding list.. .the 17 wins by the Scots are the most since the 1992-93 season, when they won 18.. .The ‘Boro is 10-2 at McComb Fieldhouse this season.. .Head Coach Stan Swank is now 167-105 (.614) at EUP.. .The Scots are 10* in Division II in scoring average and tops in the PSAC at 81.1 points a game. In their last game, the Golden Eagles defeated Lock Haven, 52-51 Saturday (Feb. 15) night. The Golden Eagles have won their previous three contests and five of their past six games. The Golden Eagles are led by Nelson, who averages a team-best 14 points a game. Junior guard Rachael Steinbugl (38-106 (.358) 3-pt fg) provides the three-point threat for Clarion, as she averages 1.81 threes a game, second-best in the PSAC. Freshman forward Krista Archiable leads the Eagles in rebounding, averaging 7.3 boards a game. CLARION NOTES: The Golden Eagles have clinched their sbcth playoff appearance in the past seven years.. .CU leads the PSAC in three-point field goals a game, hitting 7.2 per contest.
