Head Football Coach Robert W. Thurbon Bob Thurbon, graduate of Academy High School in Erie where he was a three-letter man, was AllAmerican at the University of Pittsburgh under the great Jock Sutherland. In 1943 Thurbon played pro football with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was high scorer for the team in both 1943 and 1944. Following his hitch in the army he played a season with the Buffalo Bisons in the All-American Football Confer ence. In 1954 and ’55 Bob Thurbon was the backfield coach at North East High School, before coming to Edlnboro last fall. At Edinboro Thurbon has direct charge of foot ball and basket!all, and is also an instructor in the science department. COACH BOB THURBON Homecoming Message This Homecoming marks 100 years of service for Edinboro State Teachers College. So for the moment, the college, the administration, its faculty, student body and alumni need to pause and look back across that 100 years of service and then turn resolutely forward to begin the second 100 years of important contributions to the growth and development of this area. As we turn forward we know that we are building on a firm foundation, developed in the past 100 years by the loyal service of those who have known and. understood the program of the college. As we look ahead toward the second century of service to education we know that the Department of Public Instruction and the State Legislature have already provided us with a real beginning. A graduate program in elementary education has already been approved and classes began in this area in September of 1957. Broader offerings by the college are at the present time being considered by the Department of Public Instruction. The state Legislature itself has provided funds with which to triple the present campus area. Through the Department of Public Instruc tion and the General State Authority and the State Legislature a campus development plan has been carried forward to make possible the placement of new buildings and the development of an overall plan for the entire campus. New facilities and an expanded program are an important part of the program for the second 100 years, but far and above both of these is our need to concentrate wholeheartedly to improve our instructional program so that Edinboro continues to produce the best possible teachers. Such a program will certainly be three-fold: First, a broad cultural foundation program in general education. Second, a broad specializa tion in the subject areas which will be taught. Third, a concentration of professional knowledge and know-how concerning the ways in which boys and girls grow and learn. To these goals, Edinboro pledges herself and her efforts as she begins her second century of service. Thomas R. Miller / EDINBORO’S FIRST BUILDING — 1857 Music Hall Edinhoro Celebrates 100 Years of Education Edinboro State Teachers College was founded in 1857 as an academy for teachers and chartered in 1861 as a State Normal School. It was the second Normal School in Pennsylvania and the first teacher training institution west of the Allegheny Mountains. For over half a century the school thus devoted to teacher education grew and pros pered. In 1926 it became a State Teachers College and was authorized by the Com monwealth of Pennsylvania to offer the four year curricula and to grant degrees. Edinboro grants degrees of Bachelor of Science in Education in elementary, secondary and art curricula. Also, a program for training dental hygienists, and public school nurses for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education is in operation. It is now possible to obtain a Masters degree in the field of elementary education. Edinboro is located eighteen miles south of the city of Erie, bordering on the beautiful Edinboro Lake. The college has a splendid setting on an attractive campus with fourteen buildings. “E” CLUB QUEEN ATTENDANTS Barbara Wilson The “E” Club’s lovely Homecoming Queen, Miss Wilson, and her attendants. Miss Barnes and Miss McConnell, were chosen by the lettermen on campus, who judged them on beauty, grace, charm and personality. Barbara Wilson, a Senior Elementary Student from Carnegie in Pittsburgh, lists among her activities dancing, knitting, and swimming. She was vice president of the freshman class and freshman queen; a member of: Kiltie Fins, W.A.A., and president of the women’s dorm council. She. is now student teaching in the Conneaut Lake school system. Her future plans include teaching around Pittsburgh after grad uation this spring. COACH SAM SMITH Sam Smith, head football coach and athletic director at Indiana Teachers, has made only two stops in a coaching career that spans 26 years. Smith first coached at Dormont High near Pittsburgh before moving to Indiana in 1949. He graduated from South Hills High School in Pittsburgh in 1926 after earning letters in football, basketball, baseball and track. His coach was Grover Washabaugh, now cage mentor at Westminster. The ISTC mentor went to Waynesburg College through 1930, playing his first football game at 17 among other players who were in their 20’s. He played tackle for three years and had some backfield experience as a fullback and punter. At Dormont Smith handled football, basketball, baseball and track. There he remained until he came to ISTC in 1949. Three years were spent in the ser vice from 1943 through 1945. Coach Sam Smith and Veteran end Bob McFarland Smith’s football teams at Dormont won the WPIAL championship in 1939 and the Class A title in 1942. Springdale beat Dormont for the title in 1946. His football record showed only 30 losses in 132 games over the 26-year period, 14 of the losses com ing in the first five years. The football coachinsr staff at Edinboro State Teachers College.
