Curricula range from elementary and secondary education, special fields in art, library science, music and special education to medical technology. The College stresses friendly relations among students and faculty, as well as active student participation in decisions affecting them. Quality education has been an Edinboro tradition for more than a century as graduates have distinguished themselves in the professions, business and industry. With the appointment of Dr. Chester T. McNerney as Edinboro State's President in 1966, the College has undergone innovations and reorgani zation that have enabled the College to keep in step with the times and maintain its academic excellence. Edinboro State College is at the brink of a new era and has taken the initiative for a new direction among the state colleges of Pennsylvania. The College plans to offer programs in such diverse fields as international education, business administration and engineering to meet its leadership responsibili ties in the years ahead. Edinboro President - Dr. Chester T. McNerney From its beginning as a private academy in 1856, Edinboro State College has surged to the forefront as one of the leading educational institutions in Western Pennsylvania. Located just 15 miles south of Erie, Pa., the College's setting offers a contrast of seasons. Enhanced by the beauty of Edinboro Lake, the community serves as a resort center during the summer while numerous nearby ski slopes offer a variety of recreation in the picturesque winter months. The College's location enables it to readily serve the tri-state area with its proximity to Pittsburgh, Pa. (125 miles), Cleveland, Ohio (100 miles) and Buffalo, New York (120 miles). Moreover, it is easily accessible from the north and south by Interstate 79 and east and west by Interstate 90. Until recently the chief objective of the College was the education and preparation of classroom teachers for the schools of the Commonwealth. With the implementation of programs in arts, sciences and humanities, Edinboro has now become a multi purpose institution of higher learning serving the educational needs of a tri-state area. The College has experienced a rapid growth rate in students, faculty and physical plant. Forty buildings cover the 585-acre campus which now services more than 6,000 students. In its university oriented role, the College makes .contributions in the fields of education, government, conservation, environmental improvement, urban and rural problems, crime prevention, and service to business and industry. Edinboro seeks to offer educational programs which will afford maximum opportunities to its potential students and to meet the educational needs of its region from a professional and a cultural standpoint. Keeping pace with the College's academic progress has been a building program which has dramatically changed the physical appearance of the campus over the past decade. Included among the additions are a nine-acre lake, an athletic complex, dormitory quadrant and new student services facilities such as a student union, dining hall, health center, library and administration building. POINT PRODUCING SCOTS’ BIGGEST CHALLENGE. direction of the tenth-year coach who has notched a nineseason mark of 51 -30-6. On hand to help attain that goal are 30 lettermen, among which are 15 starters from last year's club. The majority of the returnees reporting back on the field are listed on the defensive unit. Nine starters are back in uniform with most of the experience found along the front wall where veteran tackles Bryan Smith (6-3, 230, Sr.), Randy Bradshaw (6-3, 235, Sr.) and Ron Link (6-3, 220, So.) operate, sandwiched by a trio of alternating ends in Bruno Capogreco(6-3,205, Sr.),Tom Lang(6-0,203, Sr.) and Willie Curry (6-3, 215, Jr.). Anchoring the middle at nose guard will be Tom Feneziani (6-0, 215, So.), who is backed up by Gene Taylor (6-3, 220, So.), a converted defensive tackle. Curry ranked fourth on last year's tackling chart with 90 stops to his credit and posted a team-leading seven sacs, while Tom Lang at the other terminal spot finished sixth with 89 hits. Link and Smith ended seventh and eighth logging respective 83 and 81 tackle totals. Bradshaw was lost after the sixth game because of a broken leg, but still managed 52 thumps to be listed 11th among the tackling leaders. Linebacker Jim Krentz—"Keystone” of the defense. When Edinboro State's Bill McDonald scans the roster of his 1978 football squad, he feels a lot more confident than he did a year ago. No, the Scots' head coach isn't predicting any championships, but his team should be a very respectable challenger in the Pennsylvania Confer ence's Western Division. "With the number of experienced people we have back, our mistakes should be cut down," predicted McDonald who saw his team post a disappointing 3-6-1 record last season. If the "Men of McDonald" hold true to form, the Fighting Scots should log a winning campaign under the General Facts Giving ample support behind the forward wall is inside linebacker Jim Krentz (6-2, 225, Sr.), who will be complemented at the other backer spot by either Phil Fagan (6-1,195, Jr.) or Doug Smith (6-1,210, So.). Krentz, a firstteam All-Pennsylvania Conference Western Division winner, was the squad's second leading tackier with 156 stops and snagged three interceptions last season. His three-year total now reads 372 and he needs only 58 hits to become the all-time leader. The starting foursome policing the secondary will be triple letter-winners Kevin Campbell and Dan Fiegl, who work the cornerback posts, in addition to safeties Rayfield Adams and Ken Petardi. Petardi picked off three enemy aerials last fall while Campbell followed with a pair of interceptions. Giving them ample support in the defensive backfield are Ron Miller, Nick Sobecki, Scott Lewandowski and Dan Allie. Dave Gallagher (5-10, 195, Sr.) and Bob Kunkle (6-0, 211, Sr.), owners of three varsity letters as guards, are the mainstays of the offensive line. Working off their shoulders will be Pat McKenrick (6-5, 230, Sr.) and Dave Jaworski (62, 225, Sr.) at the left and right tackle slots respectively. McKenrick has been switched from tight end and Jaworski from center where they both lettered last year. Tom Greenstone (6-2, 220, Jr.), previously a defensive lineman, is the number one backup at tackle with Jim Weido (6-2, 220, So.) on hand to man either guard gap. Rick Koschar (6-2, 202, So.) apparently has gotten the nod at center, while both Tom Bourne (6-2, 195, So.) and Mike Garlick (6-2, 205, So.) are battling for reserve roles in the middle of the line. Providing blocking power and also posing as receiving threats at tight end are Bill Kruse (6-2, 215, Sr.) and Don Strozyk (6-2, 215, Jr.). Kruse (7 rec., 106 yds.), last fall's fourth leading receiver, has the edge, but Strozyk, a converted fullback, appears to have found a home in the Scots' offensive alignment. Opposing defensive backs will draw tough assign ments in covering wide receivers Bob Jahn, Joe D'Amico and Tim Beafcham. Jahn led the receiving corps a year ago with 323 yards in 21 catches and was followed by D'Amico (213 yds., 13 rec.) and Beacham (167 yds., 9 rec.). Drawing beads on the starting spots in the ESC backfield are fullbacks Andy Parma (5-9,200, Jr.)and Dave Simile (5-10, 185, Sr.), along with speedsters Joe Early (59, 168, So.), Mike Ray (5-9, 170, Fr.) and Jim Rath (5-9, 177, So.). Simile pounded out 233 yards in 51 attempts in 1977 to showcases 4.6 yards per carry average and earned third-place rushing honors. Parma, who touched the pigskin only six times, romped 107 yards to garner the number four position in the rushing stats. Even though the entire group is lacking in experience and depth, they could offer some surprising offensive fireworks. Senior signal-caller, Mike Hill (6-2, 185), should provide the leadership needed to direct the Scots' offensive attack. Although the passing game is his strong points, he appears ready to effectively engineer the Scots' groundminded veer offense. A pair of talented challengers follow close behind in Rick Shover (6-0,185, Jr.) and transfer Jeff Daub (6-1, 202, Jr.) The kicking game is strong once again behind the accurate toe of John Serrao and the punting of Dan Fiegl. Serrao's six successful field goals in a single season are an ESC record and Fiegl owns the season punting mark via his 39.4 yards per punt average. In his final season at Indiana, the Tribe finished unbeaten in nine outings and proved to be the greatest offensive unit in the school's history with a 40 points-per-game average. The Wall, Pa., native guided Hopewell High School to a 46-25-1 slate during his seven-year tenure as head coach. His 1960 ball club defeated Braddock High 7-6 and broke their WPIAL 58-game winning streak while his 1963 team captured the Midwest Class A Championship. The Fighting Scots' grid pilot served as an assistant coach at Braddock High School through two undefeated seasons and also at Latrobe High. McDonald holds both a B.S. degree in education and a M.Ed. from the Univ. of Cincinnati where he played linebacker under Sid Gillman and his assistant coach Paul Dietzel. This team was the original "Chinese Bandits," a defensive unit which later became famous at Louisiana State University. After graduation from Cincinnati in 1952, the Scots' mentor continued his education in post graduate work at Penn State, Pitt and Indiana (Pa.) Universities. Bill and his wife, Joanne, along with their three children - Amy, Jody and Dave - reside in Edinboro. Head Coach Bill McDonald notches 50th win. Bill McDonald carries an impressive 51-30-6 record into the 1978 season after nine years of leading the Fighting Scots' gridiron program. Under his direction, ESC gridders posted identical 9-1 slates in both 1970 and 1971 while piling up a winning streak of 21 straight regular season games. His 51 -30-6 mark puts him at the top of the winning percentage list among Edinboro State football coaches with a 63 per cent reading. After an initial 4-4-1 season in 1969, his Fighting Scots became the greatest in ESC history when they went 8-0 in regular season play, captured the Lambert Bowl, won the Pennsylvania Conference championship and earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. His 1971 team followed up with an undefeated regular season (9-0) and a second straight PC Western Division title. Over 60 individual and team records have been established during his first seven years at the reigns. Upon completion of 1970's successful venture, numerous post-season laurels were bestowed upon the Scot's mentor. The Football Writers Association of New York named McDonald Coach of the Year in the East while the NAIA Area VIII and District 18 coaches as well as the Pennsylvania Collegiate Press Association also rewarded him with Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his assignment at Edinboro, McDonald served as assistant football coach at Indiana Univ. of Pa. for three years and head coach at Hopewell High School from 19581965. Bruno Assistant: Tom Reddington A NEW LOOK • • • A NEW SOUND • • • A NEW NAME Spelling "Scots" at Steeler Stadium Edinboro State's marching band under the secondyear direction of Hugh Callison, has undergone a major face lifting to sport a new look for the 1978 season. The 165-member band has been renamed "The Spirit of Scots" and is led for the first time by a unit of bagpipes. "We wanted to make our band more exciting," said who is assisted by Tim Cordell, also of the ESC music department. "Our precision has improved as well as our marching and 'Spirit of Scots' better describes us than 'Bank of Scots,' our previous name," he continued. The new looking, new sounding band is comprised of a unit of eight pipers, 20 Tam O'Shanters, three feature twirlers, six majorettes and 126 instrumentalists. Also included is senior drum major Ted Cook from Monroeville who leads this year's marching contingent. Spectators will be treated to a trio of outstanding feature twirlers in Leigh Ann Potter from Monongahela, Belle Vernon's Laurie Hixenbaugh and Lori Jackovitz of Latrobe. All three own numerous honors, the most recent of which was Laurie Hixenbaugh's selection as Miss College Majorette of America. Leigh Ann Potter owns the title of Miss Tri-State Majorette, while Lori jackovitz has the distinction of being named Miss Pennsylvania State Solo Champion. Shows slated for home games are "A Salute to Nightime Entertainment," for the opening gamefollowed a week later by "Marching Musical Fantasy." A variety of tunes centered around the theme "Get Small" is on tap for the Clarion game, while "Gambler's Show" is the theme for the Spirit of Scots' final appearance of the year. Highlighting 1978's Homecoming entertainment, the S^rit of Scots will present "Scotch and Soda," a rendition of Scottish tunes and soda pop commercials. The band has received much recogniation for its outstanding performances and has made several guest appearances in Three Rivers' Stadium to provide pre-game and halftime entertainment for Pittsburgh Steeler games. Under the tutelage of Coach Pat McLane, the Lady Scots have spiked their way to 17-5, 22-5, 23-2 and 28-9 seasons over the past four years. Enroute to last year's record 28 victories, ESC was among the top eight college and university teams in 12 eastern states for the fourth consecutive year. Such noted schools as Temple, Ohio University, Delaware, Central Connecticut and Cincinnati fell to what was considered the best team in Edinboro State's history. The Lady Scots further distinguished their brilliant floor play with wins over Cortland, Penn State and Syracuse in the EAIAW regional tournament before being stopped in the quarter finals by Maryland, a team they had beaten earlier in the season. Graduating seniors and transferring juniors left five of the top eight slots open, but McLane is still optimistic in what appears to be a rebuilding year. Ten returnees will be joined by 10 freshmen who will be battling for varsity positions on the roster. "We have more freshmen than usual on hand," claims the Scot coach, "but they have better high school playing experience than in the past." Letter winners forming the nucleus of the Lady Scots' 1978-79 hopefuls include Kim Korver, Della Bayle, Sue Davey and Chris Schroeder. It won't take long for McLane's charges to find out how they'll perform againstqualitycompetition when they trade volleys in the 16-team Pitt Tournament in the season's opener. 1978 VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE Coach — Pat McLane Oct. 7 at Pitt Tournament Oct. 10-11 at Fredonia (6:00) Oct. 14 at Cortland Tournament (6:30) Oct. 18 at Kent State (7:00) Oct. 21 EDINBORO TOURNAMENT (9:30) Oct. 28 at Cleveland State Nov.1 at Slippery Rock State (7:00) Nov.4 PENN STATE (1:30) Nov.8 at Clarion (7:00) Nov. 11 at Indiana Univ. of Pa. 1978 Cross Country Schedule Coach - Doug Watts Sept. "We don't have the depth like we use to," claims Watts, "but our top people are pretty good. Our biggest problem is finding strong fourth and fifth place winners." Back to lead the pack is the district's defending 10,000 meter champion, Brian Jordan, who is of the All-American caliber that Watts has been accus tomed to producing. Behind the talentedjuniorarean appreciably improved Steve Dunham followed by aspiring freshman Lance White, the Delaware state mile champ. Junior Oscar Longo and freshman Craig Ausel should be taking turnsforfourth and fifth place finishes. Under Watts' tutelage, the Scots hold the distinction of winning back-to-back NAIA national championships in 1975 and 1976 while having claimed five district titles and snaring five Pennsyl vania Conference crowns. The Watts-men will also be seeking to extend one of the country's longest winning streaks which now reads 34 straight over a five-year span. His 1931 -32 cage record of 11 wins and 1 loss still stands as one of the best marks ever posted by an Edinboro basketball team. Sox still enjoys watching the Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoons as one of their most ardent fans. Complete facilities are located beneath the grandstand area, which seats 3,000 people. Locker space for both the home and visiting teams, the coaching staff offices and locker room, the officials' dressing room, the training room. -K 'K ^ showers, the weight room and a laundry room are utilized within this space. Also included are restrooms, janitors' facilities, equipment rooms, a large concession stand and a glass enclosed press box. In addition to the football field, the stadium also contains complete track facilities. A quarter-mile oval, a 220 straight-away and asphalt approaches for the field events highlight the home of the cinder sport. Bleacher seats on the visitors side of the stadium bring the total seating capacity to 5,500. A new scoreboard, one of the largest in the Confer ence, is located at the south end of the field.
