The College's offerings have been expanded to include a range of degrees from associates through the master's level, as well as opportunities in specialized studies. The College stresses friendly relations among students and faculty, as as active student participation in decisions affecting them. Quality education has been an Edinboro tradition for more than a century as graduates have distinguished themselves in the professions, business and industry. Edinboro State College is at the brink of a new era and has taken the initiative for a new direction among the state colleges of Pennsylvania. The College plans to offer programs in such diverse fields as international education, business administration, and engineering to meet its leadership responsibilities in the years ahead. Keeping pace with the College's academic progress has been a building program which has dramatically changed the physical appearance of the campus over the past decade. Included among the additions are a nine-acre lake, an athletic complex, dormitory quadrant, and new student services facilities such as a college union, dining hall, health center, library, and administration building. -4^ A NEW PRESIDENT - A NEW VISION Foster Diebold was named Edinboro State College's 14th President on August 1, 1979. Noted for his extensive experience in the field of education management, Diebold had previously served as President of the University of Alaska where he directed a state wide system comprised of three univer sity centers, 12 community colleges and 16 research institutions. Diebold has received praise from Governor Thornburgh, Secretary of Education Robert Scanlon, and Commis sioner of Higher Education, Dr. Clayton Sommers, for his efforts in balancing the Edinboro State College budget and FOSTER F. DIEBOLD, PRESIDENT the new direction the College has taken under his guidance during his first year. "We're delighted in the manner that President Diebold has accepted the responsi bility of leading Edinboro," commented Secretary Scanlon. "It hasn't been easy, but he has done a superb job of planning for the '80's." Diebold's principle fields of professional interest include higi.-r education management, governance, and planning; budget development and fiscal control; legislative liaison; and personnel management/collective bargaining. He was the recipient of a Wall Street Journal fellowship while at Rutgers University in 1963. A native of Orange, New Jersey, Diebold acted as President of the University of Alaska since 1977, and a year prior to that, served as Executive Secretary to the Board of Regents and Special Assistant to the President of the University of Alaska's state-wide system. From 1969 to 1976, he was Director of the Division of College Development at Kean College, New Jersey (formerly Newark State College), and from 1965 to 1969, he was Assistant Superintendent of Neptune Township Public Schools in New Jersey. In addition, he was a member of the graduate school of education at Kean College from 1968 to 1976; a teacher of English and psychology in the Neptune Township Public Schools from 1959 to 1965; and in 1957 and 1958, he was a supervisor at the Arthur Brisbane Child Treatment Center for the Emotionally Disturbed in Farmingdale, New Jersey. The newly appointed Edinboro President holds an associate degree in psychology from Monmouth Community College, West Long Branch, New Jersey; a bachelor of science degree in education from Monmouth College; a master of arts in educational administration from Seton Hall University; and has met course requirements for his doctorate in education at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Included among Diebold's numerous memberships are the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education, the Association of American Colleges, the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, the National Association of State Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Governing Boards, the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, and the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. President Diebold and his wife, Patricia (Gorski), have a four-year-old daughter, Jessica. -6- HOME OF THE FIGHTING SCOTS - SOX HARRISON STADIUM Serving as home for ESC athletes and fans is Sox Harrison Stadium. The edifice was dedicated in the fall of 1965 in honor of "Sox" Harrison who served as head football and basketball coach at the College for 35 years. His 1931-32 cage record of 11 wins and 1 loss still stands as one of the best marks ever posted by an Edinboro basketball team. Sox still enjoys watching the Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoons as one of their most ardent fans. Complete facilities are located beneath the grandstand area, which seats 2,500 people. Locker space for both the home and visiting teams, the coaching staff offices and locker room, the officials' dressing room, the training room, showers, the weight room and a laundry room are utilized within this space. Also included are restrooms, janitors' facilities, equipment rooms, a large con cession stand and a glass enclosed press box. In addition to the football field, the stadium also contains complete track facilities. A quarter-mile oval, a 220 straight-away and asphalt approaches for the field events highlight the home of the cinder sport. Bleacher seats on the visitors side of the stadium bring the total seating capacity to 4,500. -7- 1980 OUTLOOK YOUNG SCOT GRIDDERS READY TO COME OF AGE Edinboro State grid coach, Denny Creehan', enters his second year at the helm leading a young band of Fighting Scots who came of age midway through the 1979 season. Creehan, whose club won three of its last four games, has 35 1etterwinners on hand for the 1980 campaign, among which are 19 returning starters. "In spite of the large number of lettermen, we're still a young ball team" claims Creehan. "Nineteen of our 35 lettermen are juniors who have only sopho more playing experience at the varsity level." Nevertheless, the Scots appear to have the basic ingredients to be a respectable competitor in the Pennsylvania Conference's tough Western Division. The major problem Edinboro State faces is replacing quarterback Rick Shover, who left via the diploma route. Battling it out for the starting nod are sopho more Vince Piccolomini (6-2, 190) and junior Bob Jacobs (6-1, 175). Piccolomini is noted primarily for his passing talents and saw limited varsity action behind Shover a year ago. Jacobs, however, had an excellent spring and moved the Scot offense effectively in the spring game while also demonstrating that his passing had vastly improved. Backing up the signal-cal 1ing duo will be sophomore Larry Wheeler. Six experienced running backs who came away with varsity letters should be able to effectively pace the ESC ground attack when the quarterback problem is solved. The top two rushers return in leading ground gainer Joe Early (5-9, 168) and runner-up Ron Houston (6-2, 190), both seniors. Early netted 356 yards, averaging 3.8 per carry, with Houston, the starting fullback in nine games, fighting forward for 248 yards, showing 3.7 yards per try. Expected to start at the other halfback slot is speedy junior Mike Ray who showed a respectable 3.6 yards per run at the line. Running backs still in the thick of the race to tote the pigskin are 1etterwinners Fran Mifsud, Duane Churma, and fullback Steve Riddle (6-1, 210, Sr.). Power back Fred Hutzenlaub (5-10, 180, Jr.), who was impressive in the spring, should also make his presence known in the backfield. Creehan breathes his biggest sigh of relief when he views the prospects on the Scots' offensive line. Returning starters man each position which should also prove to the liking of ESC's backfield. -8- The front wall is anchored by senior center Rick Koschar (6-2, 220) and shored up by junior guards Tom Kisiday (6-0, 200) and Chris Rounds (6-1, 235), along with tackles Mike Garlick (6-2, 225, Sr.) and Mark Swiatek (6-4, 230, Jr.). Making the outlook even brighter is the depth offered by an offensive line that has ten gridders returning who traveled with the squad last year. Pro viding back-up help at each position are senior center Tom Bourne (6-2, 200), tackles Cyril Kenney (6-2, 230) and Troy Carter (6-3, 230), and guards Gary Greban (6-0, 220) and Joe Veverka (6-1, 212). A11-Pennsylvania Conference wide receiver Tim Beacham headlines the passcatching corps. Noted for his ability to run away from defenders after he gets the ball, Beacham totaled 34 receptions for 590 yards last fall and tied an ESC record with his 10 catches against Fairmont. Alternating with him will be junior Tom Gierlak. The lone line spot on the offensive unit that doesn’t showcase a returning starter is at tight end. The incumbent after spring is junior Bill Matuscak (6-3, 205) whose challenges will come from a talented crop of freshmen. "Overall, I think quickness will be our main strength on offense," summarized Creehan about the unit that sees 9 of 11 starters back in the field. "Our major concern here, of course, will be replacing the two major skill positions of quarterback and tight end," the second-year mentor concluded. There are no glaring weaknesses on the Fighting Scot defensive unit which has all but one starter returning from a group that yielded only 14.8 points per game last year. Working up front in the trenches are tackles Jim Collins (6-5, 230, Sr.) and Ron Link (6-3, 235, Jr.), middle guard Barry Swanson (6-1, 220, So.), and defensive end Doug Smith (6-1, 210, Sr.). Collins, who has been tagged early as one of the top defensive tackles in the Conference, finished third on last season's tackle charts with 102 stops to his credit and tied for the top spot in quarterback sacks with three. Smith, one of the team's 1980 captains, will be a three-year starter at the outside terminal position. Swanson had a stellar freshman debut with his 63 hits ranking sixth among the leaders and recorded a game-willing safety against Westminster. Ron Link will don the pads after missing a season due to an injury. He has already pocketed a pair of varsity monograms operating at a tackle slot during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Edinboro probably has its best depth along the defensive front with lettermen Chris McCleary (6-1, 200, Sr.)» Jim Rosick (6-2, 220, Jr.)» and Pete Butterini (6-1, 210, Jr.) forming a strong reserve force. Butterini has out standing quickness and most likely will replace Swanson at the nose guard in passing situations. Opposing backs won't find the going much easier with a trio of formidable linebackers in the second line of defense. The junior threesome consists of Bob Cicerchi (5-10, 180), Brian Hassett (6-2, 220), and Chris Pera (6-3, 220). Each took turns in the starting rotation as they were periodically sidelined with injuries last fall, but still came up with yeoman performances. Cicerchi distinguished himself playing all over the field and earned runner-up honors in the tackling department with 103 stops, just four shy of the Scots' leader, Willie Curry. Pera pilfered an Indiana pass and returned it 33 yards for a game-winning touchdown against the Big Indians last year. Still policing a Scot secondary that permitted foes to complete only 39 percent of their passes and a stingy 99.7 yards per game are seniors Nick Sobecki and Dan Allie at the corners with three-year starter, hard-hitting Ron Miller at free safety. Senior Scot Lewandowski will fill the strong safety spot vacated by All-American Ken Petardi. The letter-winning quartet will receive relief duty from junior veteran Mike Abbiatici at cornerback and senior Stewart Ayers, a converted running back, at strong safety. Sophomore Bob Gerthoffer's fine spring showing has also placed him in the backup contingent. "We have a solid group in our secondary, who shouldn't make mistakes," projected Creehan. "This could be the one area where we lack experienced depth, but our front liners have been around long enough to know what to do." In the specialty department, sohpomore placekicker Rick Ruszkiewicz should augment the Scots' overall attack. He finished as the team's leading scorer in his rookie year by hitting on five of ten field goal tries and chipped in six extra point conversions for his 21-point total. He split the uprights from 47 yards against California to record the longest field goal in ESC's history. Ruszkiewicz will also handle the punting chores. Leading the Fighting Scots into their 1980 nine-game schedule are senior captains Dan Allie, Jim Collins, Mike Garlick and Doug Smith. Their opener is slated for Erie's 10,000-seat Veterans' Stadium against Westminster College. 10- N COACH DENNY CREEHAN - BEGINNING OF AN ERA Edinboro State named its ninth mentor in the College's football history last year with the appointment of Dennis Creehan, a staff assistant for three years, as the Fighting Scots' head coach. Creehan took over the reins from Bill McDonald, who had successfully guided the ESC grid program for ten years and had served as head coach when Creehan starred on the gridiron for the Scots. "I appreciate the opportunity the College has given me and look forward to the challenge of directing our foot ball program," commented the then 29-year old coach. "Of course, I am a graduate of Edinboro State College and it means HEAD COACH DENNY CREEHAN an awful lot to me personally to be placed in this position." Creehan was a captain of Edinboro State's 1970 team that captured the Lambert Bowl, emblematic as the best small college football team in the East, won the Pennsylvania Conference championship and earned a berth in the NAIA national playoffs. He starred in the secondary as a strong safety that season when the Fighting Scots finished their regular campaign undefeated with a 9-0 record. Prior to his stint on the Edinboro State staff, Creehan served as recruiting coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh in 1974 under Coach Johnny Majors. The following year he was a member of the Carnegie Mellon University football staff as the team's offensive coordinator. Upon graduation from Edinboro in 1971, Creehan was offensive coordinator at Keystone Oaks High School in Pittsburgh and directed an offense that netted 300 yards per game. A year later as Keystone Oaks' defensive coordinator, the newly appointed coach tutored a unit that allowed only 8 points per game and permitted only a 33 percent pass completion mark by opposing quarterbacks. -11- After starring as both a fullback and strong safety at Bethel Park High School, the Castle Shannon, Pa., native accumulated numerous gridiron honors at Edinboro State. At the conclusion of his senior campaign for the Fighting Scots, he was accorded first team All-East honors by the ECAC and first team All-State Associated Press accolades while performing as the Scots' strong safety. In addition, he was named to the Pittsburgh Press All-District first team and to the NAIA District 18 All-Star squad. He was one of three 1970 ESC captains who accepted Edinboro's Lambert Bowl trophy at the Lambert Awards Banquet in New York City. Creehan distinguished himself in the coaching ranks as defensive coordinator at Edinboro State College in 1976 when the Scots were ranked fourth among the nation's NCAA schools in rushing defense and claimed 18 interceptions. In the Spring of 1977, he performed as acting head coach for Edinboro State's Bill McDonald who was on a sabbatical leave. Along with his B.S. degree from Edinboro in 1971, Creehan has also earned an M.S. degree from Duquesne University and an M.Ed. from Pitt. Creehan's first season at the Scot helm proved to be an exciting debut. His young gridders came seconds away from registering a .500 record. After losing four of their first six games, the Fighting Scots won three of their final four contests. They finished the 1979 campaign 4-6 and closed out the year with upsets over Indiana and Westminster. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Creehan of Bethel Park, the Fighting Scot coach resides in Edinboro with his wife, Linda, and their two sons, Kevin and Casey. -12- THE COACHING STAFF... DAVE RIECK - Offensive Line, Head J.V. Coach Dave Rieck, a Dover, Delaware, native, is entering his second season of tutoring Edinboro State's offensive line charge. The 1973 Dover Senior High grad was elected team captain while starring scholastically as a three-year starter both offensively and defensively. He was an All-Conference and All-State selection as well as being tabbed a high school All-American during his career at Dover. The Scot coach continued his gridiron endeavors on the campus of Millers- ville State College where he started at both offensive guard and tackle slots for three seasons. The stellar lineman captained Millersville's 1976 squad and twice earned All-Conference and NAIA All-America honorable mention honors. After graduation from Millersville in 1973, Dave accepted a head football coaching position at Delmar Junior-Senior High School in Delmar, Delaware, and a year later became assistant coach at Howard High In Elicott City, Maryland. In both coaching assignments, he specialized in directing offensive line hopefuls. JIM CONNOLLY - Receivers Coach Youngstown, Ohio's Jim Connolly is a newcomer to the Edinboro State football program where he will groom the Fighting Scot receiving corps. The Buckeye state product began his football career as a defensive end at Austintown Fitch High School where he graduated in 1975. Connolly continued his gridiron exploits at Tennessee Tech playing as a defensive tackle for three seasons. After receiving his B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education in 1979, Connolly accepted a graduate assistant coaching position at Youngstown State University. During his past season with the Penguins, he helped coach the tight ends before coming to the Scot staff in a similar capacity. The first-year Edinboro State tutor and his recent bride, Brenda, now make their home in Edinboro. 14- TONY FERRARI - Defensive Line Coach Making his return to the Pennsylvania Conference collegiate ranks where he starred as a defensive tackle, Tony Ferrari will be sharing his expertise with Scot defensive linemen. Originally from Greensburg, Pa., the 1965 Hempfield High graduate earned A11-Conference, All-WPIAL, All-City and All-State honorable mention honors during his scholastic playing days as an offensive and defensive tackle. Ferrari was a four-year starter at Indiana University of Pa., where he was awarded a B.S. in social studies degree in 1970. He anchored a Big Indian defense in 1968 that paced Indiana to an undefeated season and an appearance in the Boardwalk Bowl at Atlantic City, New Jersey. The defensive stalwart holds the distinction of being named the Tribe's "Tackle of the Decade." From 1970 through 1974, he was an assistant grid coach at Yough High School, south of Pittsburgh where he was also head wrestling coach. For the past five years (1974-1979), Tony has been the head football coach at nearby Girard High School and has also been the Yellow Jackets' head wrestling coach. The new ESC tutor who also teaches driver education at Girard High, resides in Girard with his daughter, Nina (10), and son "A.J." (6). CARL ALLEY - Offensive Backs Coach Another first-year member of Edinboro State's football staff is Carl Alley from Pittsburgh's Moon Township. Prior to attending Findlay College in Ohio on a football scholarship that was cut short after his freshman year due to an injury, he landed All-WPIAL and All-State honorable mention laurels as an offensive and defensive halfback at Moon High School. Carl then transferred to Slippery Rock State College where he was awarded a B.S. degree in health and physical education in 1972 and an M.S. in 1975. He pursued further graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh where he has completed his course work toward his doctorate. His football coaching career got underway at Erie's McDowell High in 1972 as an offensive and defensive backs coach, a capacity which he continued at Academy High School in 1976. Two years later, the Pittsburgh product served as offensive coordinator and secondary coach at Albion's Northwestern High School. Alley was head coach of the semi-pro Erie Express football team in 1979 and has helped the Scots in spring drills over the past two years. He resides in Erie with his wife, Donna, and their two children, Carla (7) and Joe (4). -15- RICH FORMOSA - Defensive Ends Coach Returning to his alma mater to instruct the Fighting Scot defensive ends is Rich Formosa. His gridiron career began at McKees Rocks Stowe High School (now Sto-Rox) where he graduated in 1962 after earning A11-Conference honors as an offensive guard and linebacker on the defensive unit. He ventured to Montana State College and later transferred to Edinboro after his freshman campaign. Formosa played offensive guard from 1964 through 1966 for the then called Edinboro "Red Raiders." Upon receiving a B.S. degree in elementary education, he joined the Girard High School staff as an assistant coach for two seasons. Ever since 1969, he has been an assistant at Edinboro's General McLane High School where he has primarily been defensive coordinator. In addition to his undergraduate degree. Rich received his M.Ed. in 1969 from Edinboro, a degree in elementary administration in 1974 and a degree in secondary administration in 1976. He resides in Edinboro and has two children, Tracy (11) and Lindsey (8). ************************** AL HALL - Athletic Director A1 Hall will begin his 13th year of directing Edinboro State College's athletic program which has grown under his leadership from six intercollegiate sports in 1968 to the current total of sixteen, seven of which are women's teams and nine are men's sports. He has also directed ESC to new memberships in the ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference), the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), and the AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women). Through his efforts, the Edinboro campus has become a focal point for athletics in northwestern Pennsylvania and has hosted numerous district, regional, conference and national championship events at both the scholastic and inter collegiate levels. Typical of this was the designation of Edinboro as the site for the 1972 National YMCA Diving and Swimming Championships, the largest swimming meet in the world. He was also the main figure in making ESC's Sox Harrison Stadium the annual site of the July Cleveland Browns/Buffalo Bills rookie scrimmage, an event that attracts thousands of professional football fans. The ambitious Edinboro Athletic Director was elected President of the Penn sylvania Conference at a recent meeting of the 13-member athletic participating colleges.
