The Scots drove 90 yards on their first possession of the second half to make it 207. But Appalachian State made some big plays and earned the win. The scoreboard read 44-7, but players from both teams knew the game was closer than the final margin when they shook hands afterward. Sometime after Christmas and before the start of 1995 Spring Football, a group of seniors got together to discuss the upcoming football season. While the games were still eight months or so away, they talked about the frustration of having talented football teams during their careers at Edinboro, but never ending the season with a title. And they made a very clear commitment that they were not leaving Edinboro without championship rings on their fingers. They discussed the keys to success in 1995 and the thing that kept coming to the surface was UNITY. • • • GREAT NORTHWEST UPSET The third game of the season provided another monumen­ tal challenge. The Scots were flying cross-country to Portland, Ore., to take on a Portland State team that was a national con­ tender just about each season. The Vikings, playing their last season in Division II before moving up to l-AA, were once again ranked in the top 10, and everyone wondered how this fairly untested Edinboro team would respond to the loss at Appy State and the long trip to the Great Northwest. The questions were answered early. Edinboro’s ferocious pass rush rattled Portland quarterback Kyle Allen and thfe highpowered Viking offense never got off the ground. With Edinboro clinging to a 6-0 lead, Schuster drilled Allen, causing a fumble that fellow defensive end Bryan Lambert returned 55 yards for a TD. Edinboro pushed the lead to 19-0 before Portland mounted a comeback. The Vikings trailed, 19-7, late in the third quarter and were threatening to make it 19-14, but the Scots’ Ron Allen refused to let it happen. Allen picked off a pass in the end zone, lateraled to David Sadler, and in a flash it was first and goal going the other way. Allen finished the game with four intercep­ tions to tie a school record and earn National Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Scots finished off Portland with a 26-7 upset that will go down as one of the greatest wins in school history. It sent a clear message 3,000 miles east that this Fighting Scot team was ready to compete for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title. • The Fighting Scots reported to camp in August full of enthu­ siasm. The opener against Hillsdale was just three weeks away. While the team had a great spring practice and things started to come together, it was suddenly time to begin the most difficult three-game non-conference schedule in school history. THE TOUGHEST STRETCH IN HISTORY In game one, things did indeed come together. Red-shirt freshman Gerald Thompson rambled 73 yards on his first colle­ giate carry and finished the day with his first 100-yard plus game. New quarterback Chris Hart was sharp, throwing for 233 yards and three TDs. And transfer Gilbert Grantlin showed his great skills, catching a touchdown pass. Senior Pat Schuster did his thing, sacking Hillsdale’s QB three times. In a very phys­ ical and well-played football game by both teams, the unity of the team already made the difference. With the score tied at 14 in the fourth quarter, Edinboro pulled together and scored a late touchdown to win 21-14. THE PSAC In the conference opener, Edinboro overwhelmed Lock Haven, 52-12, as the Boro rushed for a season-best 438 yards. The Scots then beat Shippensburg 40-7 on the road and jumped into the NCAA Division II national/ankings for the first time in ‘95. EUP nearly shutout California (31-7) at home in week six, setting up an always difficult game at Slippery Rock. With the Indiana showdown looming, the Scots fell behind for just the second time before rallying to beat a solid Rock team, 22-13. THE GAME It was finally here. lUP, and THE game was at Sox Harrison Stadium. There was an unusual sense of confidence all week. Not cockiness, just a comforting feeling that if Edinboro took care of business against the Indians, the Scots would prevail. And that’s exactly what happened. Senior linebacker Michael Sims returned an interception for a TD to put the Plaid ahead, 7-0, and the Scots never trailed. Even when freshman sensation Gerald Thompson was forced to leave the game with an injury, others stepped up, like junior Tony Brinson, who scored two TDs. Even when lUP scored a TD and two-point conversion to cut the gap to 21-18, Edinboro responded with A VALIANT EFFORT Week two presented a huge challenge for the Scots. Edinboro travelled to Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. to take on the Division l-AA Mountaineers. Not only was Edinboro playing up a level for the first time in four seasons, the Scots were taking on a team that was ranked No. 2 in the l-AA polls and coming off a win over Wake Forest of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Edinboro put up a valiant fight before eventually losing the game. The Scots missed some opportunities early and trailed 2 Team Unity Brings Scots PSAC Title! two TDs, including a clutch touchdown catch by Todd Henne, to post a convincing 35-18 victory. Odds and Ends About the ‘95 Fighting Scots WEATHERING THE HOMESTRETCH The win over lUP meant the Scots would have the oppor­ tunity to clinch the PSAC West title with a win the final week of the season at Clarion, the team that knocked Edinboro out of the playoff picture in 1994, with an upset. But first, Edinboro had to beat PSAC East rival Mansfield, who also upset the Scots in ‘94. Six inches of snow fell the night before the game, but just like the football team, many peo­ ple within the athletic department - administrators and studentathletes and coaches from other EU teams - pulled together to remove the snow from the tarp in the hours (and minutes) lead­ ing up to the game. Another unified effort, just to make the field playable. And once the surface was clear, the Scots again took care of business, overwhelming Mansfield, 42-0. • • • • Edinboro finished the 1995 season with a 9-2 overall record, the fifth time in school history the program has won nine games. • The Fighting Scots were ranked No. 8 in the final NCAAi Division II poll, and advanced to the NCAA-II playoffs for the fifth time in the past seven years. • The Fighting Scots won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division title with a perfect 6-0 record, the only member of the 14-team PSAC to go unblemished in conference action. • • Edinboro finished the ‘95 regular season undefeated against NCAA Division II opponents with a 9-0 mark. The weather at Clarion the next Saturday was even worse. The field was sloppy at kickoff and got progressively worse as the game was played in a steady rain. It was a true test of char­ acter. Battling the conditions was as tough as fighting off a very good Clarion team, but there was nothing that could stop Edinboro’s quest for a championship. As the clock was winding down on a 28-6 victory, there was a tremendous feeling on the Scots sideline. Some players cried, some laughed. Some just spent a moment or two by them­ selves, reflecting on the dedication and sacrifice it took the past 11 months to be in this position. Some, like Florida native Grantlin, did swan dives in the mud. There were hugs and high fives. Coach Tom Hollman got a Gatorade bath before being carried off the field, and Edinboro’s mentor led a Scottish jig in the locker room. The Scots were CHAMPIONS! • Edinboro’s defense allowed just 128 points in 10 reg­ ular season games, an average of 12.8 points per game. Throw out the 44-7 loss at Appalachian State, and the Scots allowed just 84 points against Division II foes (9.3 ppg) in regular season play. Five of EUP’s 10 Division II opponents were held to seven points or less points. • Statistically, EU’s defense ranked among the Top 15 in NCAA Division II last year in four major defensive cat­ egories. The Scots allowed just 14.1 points per game overall (7th in Division II), 253.1 yards of total offense (11th), 97.8 yards per game rushing (15th), and 155.5 yards per game passing (7th). NCAA ACTION • The Scots defense recorded 42 sacks in ‘95, and added an additional 63 stops behind the line. That’s 105 opponent plays ending in minus yardage or 9.5/game. The next day, the team watched the live satellite telecast of the NCAA Division II playoff parings... together. Edinboro would have to travel to New Haven, Conn., to face the fifth-ranked Chargers of the University of New Haven. The Scots got off to a great start and led 12-3 at halftime, but New Haven came back in the third quarter to take a 13-12 lead. Edinboro just couldn’t get the momentum back as New Haven made several big plays to storm past the Scots, 27-12, and into the quarterfinals. Edinboro’s dream of a national title ended. It was a bitter defeat, no question, but it was a sweet season. Many years from now, people will reflect back on the ‘95 Fighting Scots. They’ll remember the nine wins, especially the ones at Portland and against lUP and at Clarion. But, perhaps more importantly, people will also remember that the 1995 Fighting Scots were the best TEAM in the PSAC because they were a unified group of talented individuals, led by a special group of seniors, putting it all on the line for each other. And the unity that Edinboro displayed during the ‘95 season will last a lifetime. • Offensively, Edinboro averaged 30.4 points per game during the regular season (33.0 ppg vs. D-ll opponents). Edinboro averaged 236.6 yards per game rushing to lead the PSAC. • Individually, red-shirt freshman running back Gerald Thompson rushed for 1,281 yards on 228 carries to lead the conference in rushing (116.5 ypg). • Senior defensive end Pat Schuster recorded 16 sacks to finish his career with a school-record 38, his jersey number. Pogue, Jr. 6 Dr. Frank G. Pogue Jr. was appointed President of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on July 1, 1996. Dr. Pogue brings to Edinboro more than three decades of experience in high­ er education including equity, diversity, excellence in teaching, retention, Afro-American stud­ ies, health care and citizenship. Dr. Pogue serves on the Executive Council for the State System of Higher Education, which is comprised of the SSHE Chancellor and Presidents from the 14 System institutions. He is the Vice Chairperson of the Executive Committee and Chairperson of the Task Force on Equity and Diversity for the Commission on Higher Education, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The recipient of numerous awards in recognition of his academic and personal accom­ plishments, Dr. Pogue was recognized by the Office of the Governor of New York as an African American of Distinction. He has toured South Korea, China and Kenya and has worked to establish student exchange programs with these countries. Prior to coming to Edinboro University, Dr. Pogue served for ten years as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Special Programs at the State University of New York Central Administration. During that time, he served for a year as Interim President of SUNY at Cobleskill. He also held several other positions during his 22-year tenure at SUNY. In addition, he was the Senior Research Associate and Assistant Professor of Family Health at Meharry Medical College in Nashville; Assistant Professor of Sociology and Director of Afro-American Studies at Chatham College in Pittsburgh; and Dean of Students and Chair of the Department of Sociology/Anthropology at Philander Smith College in Little Rock. Dr. Pogue provides leadership to Edinboro University with particular regard to the importance of creating and maintaining a culture of academic excellence among University students, faculty, staff and administrators. He works to diversify the college experience by developing for students opportunities to interact with people different from themselves. Athletic Director Jody Mooradian Jody Mooradian begins her third year as athletic director at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania after serving as associate athletic director and senior women’s administrator for one year with the Fighting Scots. Mooradian, a New Hampshire native who joined the Edinboro athletic staff after assisting with compliance at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) athletic department, assumed her current post in August of 1994. Mooradian is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Fighting Scots’ nationally com­ petitive 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program. She has implemented several new programs for Edinboro’s student-athletes, including the establishment of the EUP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the reinstatement of an athletic awards system. Mooradian not only provides leadership for the Fighting Scots’ athletic department, but also is a key figure on campus and within the NCAA and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. She serves on the President’s Cabinet at Edinboro, is a member of the NCAA Interpretations Committee and the PSAC Executive Committee, and serves as chair of the PSAC Volleyball Committee. At UCLA, Mooradian handled NCAA compliance and eligibility matters and also worked with tutorial services budgets and Title IX evaluations. She performed similar duties at Edinboro after joining the staff in August of 1993 and also assumed responsibili­ ty for financial aid for the Fighting Scots’ 300-plus student-athletes, scheduling and administering Edinboro University’s intercolle­ giate athletic events, as well as special events such as the University’s outstanding summer camps. Before dedicating herself to a career in intercollegiate athletics, Mooradian served a five-year stint as a practicing attorney. She handled all aspects of insurance litigation for Devine, Millimet and Branch of Manchester, New Hampshire, for nearly two years after serving as in-house counsel for the CIGNA Insurance Company in Philadelphia for more than three years. Her father, Andy Mooradian, was athletic director at the University of New Hampshire for 22 years. She played college bas­ ketball for two years and earned a B.A. in political science in 1981 from New Hampshire. She received her Juris Doctorate from the Delaware Law School in 1986, and a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Delaware in 1987. The Woody Hayes Award is presented annually by the Sertoma Chjb of CoUjmbus, Ohio, to the outstanding man and woman in each of the three NCAA divisions for “demon­ strated excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.” The award is a living memorial to the high standards of excellence - both on and off the field of the former Ohio State University football coach. Henne received the 1995 award for Division II men. As a speech communication major at Edinboro, Henne posted a 3.79 cumulative grade point average. He was a GTE Academic All-District selection as a senior and a national finalist for an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. On the field, Henne was a first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference pick as a senior after earning second-team recognition as a junior. He caught 37 passes for 361 yards and seven TDs as a twoyear starter. He also was a key blocker for a team that averaged 224.2 yards per game rushing and 28.7 points per contest. During the fall of his senior year, Henne was appointed to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and attended the organization’s annual meeting in Dallas. He also was a key member of Edinboro’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board and served as the sports director for the campus radio station (WFSE). He was part of a student team that produced an award-winning video on responsible drinking. “I’ve often said that Todd is one of those people you know will be successful in life,” said Edinboro head coach Tom Hollman. “He truly exemplifies what college athletics is all about, adhering to the same ideals that Coach Hayes stood for. Jay, Assistant to the Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Publicity Todd Jay begins his 12th year of service with the Edinboro University Athletic Department, and his sec­ ond year as Assistant to the Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Publicity. Jay began his career in sports administration at Edinboro in the summer of 1985, serving as the Fighting Scots’ sports information and promotions director for the first 10 years of his tenure. Jay was primarily respon­ sible for publicizing all aspects of Edinboro athletics while coordinating many of the Athletic Department’s special events. He served as the department’s primary media liaison and as host of “Fighting Scot Sports,’’ Edinboro’s weekly cable television show. He also coordinated the department’s annual Student-Athlete Recognition and Hall of Fame banquets, serving as master of ceremonies. In addition. Jay has been very involved in the organization and promotion of several international wrestling exhibitions and NFL scrimmage games, as well as the highly successful Sports Memorabilia Auction. Jay is currently responsible for monitoring all aspects of Edinboro’s NCAA compliance program, including working closely with the NCAA Clearinghouse in certification of initial eligibility, with the NCAA, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and with the members of the EUP coaching staff on on-going legislative matters. Jay continues to oversee the operations of the sports information and promotions office, coordinates travel arraingements for the Scots 19-sport program, and assists in many areas of departmental fund-raising activities. Todd chairs the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, is a member of the Edinboro University President’s Cabinet, and the NCAA Division II Basketball Committee. Jay earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Clarion in 1982 in addition to his master’s. He was a two-time All PSAC baseball player for the Golden Eagles. Todd is married to the former Sarah Bishop, an All-American basketball player and former coach at Edinboro. Dave Higham, Assistant to the Athletic Director Dave Higham began his association with the Edinboro University Athletic Department in 1982, and cur­ rently serves as an Assistant to the Athletic Director, a position he has held since 1989. Higham was a standout offensive lineman with the Fighting Scots from 1982-86. He was selected the Scots team captain prior to his senior year and also was a pre-season All-American pick. Higham earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1987, and served as a graduate assistant for the Athletic Department for the next two years while receiving his master’s degree in secondary adminis­ tration. Among Dave’s numerous responsibilities is directing and coordinating all aspects of Edinboro’s exten­ sive summer camp program, including recruiting and coordinating all on-campus arrangements for thousands of visitors each year. During the school year, Higham manages all of the Fighting Scots’ home athletic events and handles scheduling for the department’s facilities. His many other duties include NCAA compliance for team practices, supervising maintenance employees during both the summer and school year, and assisting in the recruitment of stu­ dent-athletes. Dave is a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame Committee and assists with EUP’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee, which works with with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Olympics, the Erie City Mission, and campus leaders. Dave is an advisor and regional board member for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also serves as a board member of many departmental committees, is a member of the Christian Businessmen’s Organization and the Health and Physical Education Club. Dave and his wife Carla have two children, Sean, 15, and Hailey Jo, who was born in June. Sue Marshall, Athletic Business Director ■ / _ Sue Marshall has been the business manager and fundraiser coordinator for the Fighting Scot Booster Club for the past 11 years. Marshall came to Edinboro after working for eight years as a child care director and human service fundraiser. She is a graduate of Slippery Rock University, and is presently continuing her education in the master’s program in elementary education at Edinboro. Sue is actively involved in the coordination of many of the fund-raising events for the Athletic Department, including the Curly Halmi Scholarship and the Sox Harrison Scholarship fund. As business manager, she manages all Booster Club income under the auspices 33 of Edinboro University’s financial operations and administration. She is on the University’s Athletic Endowment Selection Committee and is the department’s representative for the State Employees Combined Appeal (SECA) Campaign. Athletic Training Athletic Support Staff George Roberts, A.T., C., Head Athletic Trainer George Roberts begins his 12th year as the Head Athletic Trainer at Edinboro University after serving as a teacher, trainer and assistant football coach at Titusville High School from 1976-84. Roberts has extensive experience in the sports medicine profession, highlighted by experiences at sev­ eral international competitions. Roberts has worked two Olympic Games for the United States Olympic Committee, volunteering his services for Olympiads in Los Angeles in 1984 and Barcelona in 1992. He also has worked several National Sports and Olympic Festivals and the World University Games. In addition to directing the training room facilities and staff at Edinboro, George is a member of several on-campus and professional committees, including the Curly Halmi Scholarship Committee. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and serves on the Board of Directors of the College Athletic Trainers Society. Ahearn is responsible for a wide range of duties, including the production of athletic publications, media relations, home event management, statistical record keeping, and promotion of EUP student-athletes and athletic teams. Ahearn also serves as host of the “Fighting Scot Sports” weekly cable television show, and assists with various fund-raising activities. Ahearn, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., joined the Fighting Scot staff in July of 1995, after serving as a sports information director in the Midwest for nine years. He was the sports information and marketing director at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan., for six years, after serving as SID at Chicago State University from 1986-89. While at Pittsburg State, Ahearn coordinated several major promotional campaigns for student-ath­ letes, including successful campaigns for consecutive Harlon Hill Award winners in 1991 and 1992, and numer­ ous All-Americans. He also played a major role in increased national publicity for the University’s highly suc­ cessful football program, which won the NCAA Division II championship in 1991. Ahearn is an active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), serving as the chair of the NCAA Division II SIDs this year. He has been a presenter several times at the organization’s national workshop, and has been honored for his athletic publications by CoSIDA four times. Edinboro Hosts Shippensburg in Homecoming Game THE GAME The Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Fighting Scots welcome the Red Raiders of Shippensburg to Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday as Edinboro celebrates its annual Homecoming weekend. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WFSE-FM (88.9). PSAC OPENER The game will be the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener for both teams. The Fighting Scots, 1-2 overall this season, are the defending PSAC-West champions. Last year, Edinboro was a perfect 6-0 in conference action, the only PSAC school to record an unblemished record. Edinboro advanced to the NCAA Division II national playoffs for the fourth time in the past six years as the Scots finished 9-2 overall record. Shippensburg enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 1-3. The Red Raiders were 3-8 overall last season and placed fifth in the league with a 2-4 record. SCOTS IN THE PSAC Edinboro has posted a 37-9-2 record (.792) against PSAC West foes since head coach Tom Hollman was hired in 1988. The Fighting Scots won PSAC West titles in 1995 and 1989 and finished as the Western Division runner-up in 1990, ‘93 and ‘94. The Boro has won its last seven PSAC West openers, and the Scots are 11-5 in Western Division openers since 1980. The Boro dropped a 49-28 decision to West Chester on Homecoming in 1987, and have won eight straight Homecoming contests since. Last year, Edinboro beat Lock Haven, 52-12, on Homecoming. HOME SWEET HOME It’s more than appropriate that Saturday is Edinboro’s Homecoming contest. The Scots are not only play­ ing at Sox Harrison Stadium for the first time this season, but Edinboro also is playing at home after five straight road games in five different states! The Boro played it’s final two games on the road last year, winning the PSAC-West title at Clarion in the final game of the regular season, before travel­ ling to New Haven, Conn., for the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Fighting Scots opened the ‘96 campaign with three straight road games: a 35-14 victory at Hillsdale College in Michigan; a 42-12 loss at Carson-Newman in Tennessee, then last week’s 17-7 defeat at the University at Buffalo in New York. TOUGH AT HOME Edinboro has posted a 33-5-1 record (.859) at Sox Harrison Stadium since Tom Hollman became head coach in 1988. The Scots have won nine of their last 10 home games. TOUGH SCHEDULE Not only have the Scots played all road games, the opposition has been especially tough. Carson-Newman became the No.1 ranked team in Division 11 football this week, moving up two spots In the poll from the No. 3 ranking the Eagles held when Edinboro played. Buffalo, an NCAA Division l-AA program, is now 4-1 on the season. The Bulls, who are making the jump up to NCAA Division l-A status in 1999, are a program on the rise. THE COACHES Edinboro’s Tom Hollman has posted an 86-37-3 overall record (.694) in 13 seasons as a college head coach, including a 62-26-2 mark (.700) in nine years at Edinboro. Hollman was ranked 11th in winning percentage among active NCAA Division II coaches entering the ’96 season and 20th in total victories. He became Edinboro’s all-time winningest coach last season, leading the Fighting Scots to a 9-2 overall record. Edinboro has captured a pair of PSAC-West titles under Hollman (1989 and 1995), and the Scots have qualified for the NCAA Division II play­ offs in five of the past seven seasons. Hollman is 7-1 versus Shippensburg. Shippensburg head coach Rocky Rees is in his seventh year at the helm and enters Saturday’s game with a 33-38-2 mark with the Red Raiders. His only victory over the Fighting Scots was a 45-7 win over Edinboro in 1991. Rees has an overall coaching record of 69-53-2. THE SERIES The schools will meet for the 36th time on Saturday with the overall series tied, 17-17-1 Shippensburg dominating the rivalry early on, while Edinboro has enjoyed most of the success in recent years. The Fighting Scots have won four straight over the Raiders and Edinboro has claimed Sophomore Quentin Ware-Bey and senior tight end Corey Keyes lead the receivers. Ware-Bey has has 16 catches for 182 yards, while Keyes has 12 receptions for 106 yards. THE BORO DEFENSE Edinboro returned seven starters from one of Division II’s top defenses from last season. The Scots are led by 6-2, 220-pound senior inside line­ backer Michael Sims, who led the team In tackles each of the past two seasons, 6-5, 285-pound senior defensive tackle, Jeff Traversy, who record­ ed eight sacks a year ago, and junior free safety Brian Decker. Sims was credited with a season-high 18 tackles at Buffalo (9 solo, 9 assists). He now has 24 stops on the season, second on the team behind Decker, who has 30 tackles (18 solo). Traversy has 10 tack­ les this year, including two sacks and two tatkles 12 of last 14 contests. Last year, Edinboro jumped out to a 20-0 half­ time lead and posted a solid 40-7 victory. Wide receiver Gilbert Grantlin scored three touchdowns, and running back Gerald Thompson rushed for 169 yards and two TDs, leading a balanced Edinboro attack which produced 465 yards of total offense. Edinboro’s defense limited Shippensburg to 155 for loss. yards of total offense. the season opener. Shippensburg’s offense averages 337.5 total yards per game, including 174 yards per game rushing and 163.5 yards passing. The attack is led by junior quarterback Mike Carver, who has com­ pleted 47 of 93 passes (.505) for 628 yards with two TDs and three I NTs. Senior Michael Buglia leads the team in receiving, hauling in 22 passes for 384 SCOTS TO WATCH The Edinboro offense features an experienced backfield, led by senior quarterback Chris Hart and the running back tandem of sophomore Gerald Thompson and senior Tony Brinson. Hart has completed 56 of 97 passes (.577) for 563 yards and two TDs this year, and has now thrown for 2,478 yards in his Edinboro career to rank ninth on EU’s all-time list. Hart had an outstanding first half last week at Buffalo, completing 14 of 18 passes for 153 yards. For the game, he completed 22 of 36 passes for 208 yards. Thompson, the PSAC-West Rookie of the Year in 1995 after rushing for 1,281 yards and 10 TDs as a red-shirt freshman, has been slowed by a few nagging injuries (back, shoulder) this year. He had his best outing last week, gaining 71 yards on 29 carries at Buffalo. Brinson has rushed for 137 yards on 50 carries this year. He eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing for his EUP career at Buffalo and enters the Shippensburg game with 1,018 yards on 237 carries. A LOOK AT SHIPP The Red Raiders are coming off a 34-29 loss to Millersville last week, after a heartbreaking 37-34 defeat at Kutztown two weeks ago. Ship defeated Shepherd (WV) College on Sept. 14 for Its only vic­ tory of the year, after losing to James Madison In yards and two scores. Three running backs,sophomore Kevin Washington (27 car., 195 yards, 4 TDs), junior Mark Madson (48 car., 187 yards, 1 TD) and junior Rajahn Bass (31 car., 182 yards, 2 TDs) have han­ dled most of the running duties, but Madsen missed the last game with an injury. The Shippensburg defense is led by junior line­ backer Mike Vnuk, who has a team-high 52 tackles 926 solo), senior defensive back Jeff Brown (42 stops, three forced fumbles) and sophomore defen­ sive back Dean Owens (41 tackles) UP NEXT The Fighting Scots will play at California next Saturday night at 7 p.m. Edinboro returns home Oct. 19 with a clash against Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. Versatile Brinson Quietly Does Job For Fighting Scots by Ed Finck, Edinboro sports information assistant Quietly, but surely, Tony Brinson does the job for the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania football team. Brinson, a 6-0, 188-pound senior running back from Pittsburgh’s Langley High School, went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark for his career in last week’s game at the University at Buffalo. During his career at Edinboro, Brinson has been somewhat overshadowed by the likes of Larry Jackson (Edinboro’s career rushing leader with 4,237 yards) and current backfield mate Gerald Thompson (1,281 yards rushing last season), but that has not stopped Brinson from making his mark as a valuable all-purpose back. Last season, en route to earning second-team Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division recognition, Brinson rushed for 649 yards and seven touchdowns, caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two scores and provided solid blocking for Thompson. This season, Brinson has rushed for 137 yards In the Scots’ first three games, including a team-high 85 yards at Carson-Newman. His production this year gives him 1,018 career yards and ranks him No. 19 on the school’s all-time rushing list. A solid rushing performance in Saturday’s home­ coming contest against Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania would enable Brinson to climb even higher on Edinboro’s rushing list, past former Boro players Joe Sanford (1,026 yards), Bryan Libert (1,031), Chris Conway (1,034) and Joe Early (1,095). Brinson, however, is a team player, and he would much rather play an all-around role in a win than rush for 100-plus yards In a loss. “I don’t mind if I’m not the featured back,” Brinson said. “As long as I contribute to the team as an all-pur­ pose back, I’m all for it. I’m valuable to the team in my role. I play halfback, fullback, the slot.” “Tony is a complete player,” said Edinboro head coach Tom Hollman. “He can do a number of things for us. He did a lot of big things last year, and we expect more big things from him this year.” “Tony is a great team player,” said Edinboro offen­ sive coordinator Scott Browning. “He’ll do whatever you ask him to do - run, block, catch a pass.” Brinson, who majors in criminal justice, also plays another key role in a leadership capacity. “Tony Is quiet, but he leads by example,” Hollman said. “He’s an unselfish team player.” “Tony is a quiet leader who leads by example,” Browning said. “He’s a hard-nosed kid who plays hard Edinboro senior Tony Brinson is a key performer in the Fighting Scots backfield and practices hard. He sets a good example for our younger players.” Like most running backs, Brinson would love to rush for 1,000-plus yards In a season, but Brinson Is more concerned with team success, and Edinboro has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years, advanc­ ing to the NCAA Division II national playoffs in two of Brinson’s first three seasons. “I think about what it would be like to rush for 1,000 yards in a season,” Brinson said. “But Larry Jackson was a great player, and Gerald Thompson is a great player. I think I’ve had a pretty good career. I’ve done a lot more than I thought I would.” Brinson has individual goals, but they do not include a certain number of yards rushing or a certain number of receptions. Brinson simply wants to stay healthy and help the Scots win games. Brinson also wants to help take Edinboro deeper into the national playoffs. Coach Rocky Rees begins his seventh season at the helm for the Red Raiders. The Ship lost a great deal on offense, as the departures of OT Dwaine Schultz, TE Brian Stolarick and RB’s Seth Holderman and Tom Coleman will have to be filled. Mike Carver will lead the offense in 1996. The quarterback threw for more than 1,400 yards and 8 TD’s last season. Returning targets for Carver are all-star candidate Mike Buglia, who caught 6 TD’S while averaging almost 20 yards per catch. Veteran offensive linemen Ron Luffy, Andre Pelletier, Matthew Stauffer and Mike laquinta will protect Carver and pave the way for RB Mark Madson, who rushed for 405 yards last season. Defensively, Ship will miss LB’S Martin Pepe, Chris Willingham, Kyle Kane and DB Shawn Brown. All four were 2nd-team All-PSAC last season. Leading the way on defense is Steve McTaggart, who led the down linemen in tackles last season with 59. He also had four sacks. Michael Vnuk, the Red Raiders third leading tackier in 1995 will anchor the linebacking corps. DB’s Jef Brown and Dean Owens also return to the secondary. Brown had 2 INT’s to go along with his 71 1996 Bull Outlook After an injury-filled 1995 campaign, the University at Buffalo looks to be very competitive in the upcoming season. Injuries and one of the nation’s most difficult Division l-AA schedules took its toll on the Bulls after a 2-1 start last season. Second-year head coach Graig Cirbus returns 15 starters (7 offense, 6 defense, 2 specialists) and 28 lettermen from last year's 3-8 squad. Offensively, the Bulls will be led by senior TE Chris Behan, an All-American in 1994, and senior Gerald Carlson (K/P), an All-American candidate who ranked fourth in the nation in field goals in 1995. The Bulls also return junior QB Mark Taylor, who threw for 1,218 yards last season and junior running back Anthony Swan, who rushed for 968 yards in 1995. Two home losses in September put the Indians in a hole, and all post-season dreams were shattered when Edinboro handed the Indians a 35-18 defeat last October. After a “disappointing” 8-3 season, head coach Frank Cignetti looks to rebound with a serious run at the PSAC title and another charge into post-season play for the eighth time in 10 years. IUP must replace 13 starters, but the Indians have several key play­ ers returning. Tailback James Suber, the ECAC Player of the Year, and linebacker Eugene Miller, who was voted the team's Outstanding Freshman, lead the way. Also returning are four All-PSAC players: DE Mike Marshall, OT Darren Walton, FL Mario Hardison, and DT Shannon Manning. Tony Hardy, who caught 30 passes for 497 yards last season, and FS Reggie Carter, who led the team with 69 solo tackles, also return. Cheyney enters the 1996 season looking to improve upon its sev­ enth place finish in the PSAC East last year. Under the direction of second-year head coach Vincent Williams, the Wolves played some tough competition in Pennsylvania schools Indiana, Bloomsburg and Millersville while finishing 0-10-1 in 1995. The last time Edinboro and Cheyney met was in 1970, as then Edinboro State College defeated the Wolves 37-0. Prior to that meeting, the only other contest between the two schools was a 13-12 CU victory in 1967. With seven starters returning to the defensive side of the ball, CU will try to hold opponents under the 46 points per game allowed last season. Leading the way for the defense will be senior DB Kenneth Pickron, junior LB Frank McDermott and junior Tiko Gilliam. On offense, Cheyney returns 5 starters, among them, junior quarterback Yuseff Davison. Davidson will look to junior wideout Terrance Johnson, as he returns to the Wolf lineup for his third season of action. Edinboro enjoyed its’ 1995 Homecoming contest as the Scots scored 38 first half points, and rolled to a 52-12 victory. Gerald Thompson scored twice in the half on a 42-yard run and a 75-yard screen pass from Chris Hart, who also tossed scoring passes to John Sabo and Gilbert Grantlin in the flourish. The second half was much of the same, with Thompson scoring again on a 39-yard run, followed by freshman Mark Brown’s first career touchdown, a 50-yard jaunt, which made the score 52-6. The Scots ran for a season-best 438 yards, led by the PSAC West Player of the Week Thompson, who had 149 yards on 13 carries . Edinboro travelled to Boone, N.C., to take on the Mountaineers in the second of three tough non-conference games to open the season. Appalachian State was ranked No. 2 in Division l-AA. The Mountaineers jumped on top early as quarterback Scott Satterfield ran for an eight yard score. Edinboro marched right back down the field to the Appalachian three yard line before a sack and penalty took the Scots back to the 18. A field goal attempt sailed wide and the Scots failed to score. EU’s defense forced a pair of field goals, and a Damon Scott touchdown run made the score 20-0 at the break. Edinboro rallied on their first play of the second half, driving 90 yards to cut the lead to 20-7. An ASU field goal increased the lead to 23-7, and backup quarterback Gerard Hardy's spectacular run ended Edinboro’s hopes of an upset. Appalachian State went undefeated the rest of the season until falling in the second round of the NCAA Division l-AA playoffs. Simply stated, Edinboro’s defense dominted one of the top offenses in the nation. The Scots scored two defensive TDs and forced nine turnovers, including four inter­ ceptions by safety Ron Allen, who was named the national defensive player of the week. With Edinboro leading 6-0 and under a minute to play in the first half, defensive end Pat Schuster recorded his 26th career sack to become Edinboro’s all-time leader. He also forced a fumble on the play and Bryan Lambert scooped it up and rambled 55 yards for a TD to send the Boro into the locker room with a 12-0 lead. Edinboro took the opening kickoff in the second half and drove 69 yards in 11 plays to extend the lead to 19-0. Derek Mitchell recovered a Viking miscue in the end zone after Portland cut the gap to 19-7, and the Scots upset the No. 12 team in NCAA Division II. Grantlin also took a reverse 22 yards to make it 26-0. Thompson scored later on a five yard run, and Grantlin caught another Hart TD pass. Edinboro's defense allowed just 155 total yards, with the only blemish, a 25-yard third-quarter TD pass. Thompson fin­ ished with 169 yards rushing and a pair of TD’s while Grantlin lit the scoreboard three times while amassing 226 total yards on the day. The Scots defense once again dominated, hold­ ing their third straight team to under 200 total yards. Pat Schuster was the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week, compiling 10 tackles (8 solo), 2 sacks, a fumble recovery and a broken-up pass in a solid allaround effort. The Scots defense took over early as Michael Sims picked off a Ken Ferguson pass and raced in from 26 yards out to give the Boro an early 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, the Indians tied the score at seven when Vaughn Mosely took a Ferguson screen and rambled 38 yards. The Scots answered on a fake reverse pass from Chris Hart to Gilbert Grantlin for 57 yards. lUP's Jon Ruff nailed a 52-yard field goal, the second longest in PSAC history, to make the score 14-10 at the half. In the third quarter, the Edinboro defense struck again, as Jerry Roberts forced a fumble and returned it to the lUP 5-yard line. Three plays later, Tony Brinson’s 1-yard run gave the Boro a 21-10 lead. QB Steve Russell came in and led the Indians on an 83-yard drive, capped by a 37-yard run by James Suber. The two point conversion was good and the lead was cut to 21-18 with 10:02 remaining. The team’s traded fumbles, before Hart connected with Todd Henne to give the Scots a 28-18 lead with under four minutes to play. The Boro defense held again and Tony Brinson scored from three yards out to drive a nail in lUP’s coffin. Final score: Edinboro 35, lUP 18. Rock quarterback Chad Vogt opened the scoring with a 17-yard run in the sec­ ond period, before Edinboro answered with three scores of their own, including a pair of TD receptions from Grantlin. The Scots extended their lead to 22-7 on a Tony Brinson 1-yard dive. Vogt drove Slippery Rock 60 yards on 10 plays and found Jeremy Rock in the end zone from 11 yards out to cut the lead to 22-13. But that’s as close as it would get as EUP recorded seven sacks on the day, including four from defensive end Bryan Lambert, who was selected PSAC Defensive Player of the Week. Mansfield was never able to mount any kind of scoring drive, as they were held to 84 yards of total offense on the day. The entire Edinboro defense was selected the PSAC "Player” of the Week. The offense, on the other hand, recorded nearly 500 total yards, including 390 on the ground. Game #11 • November 18,1995 • NCAA Playoffs Jess Dow Field, New Haven, CT Edinboro 12, University of New Haven 27 Edinboro, 9-1 overall and ranked eighth in the final NCAA Division II poll, drew No. 5 New Haven (9-0-1) for its first round playoff game, which was played at Southern Connecticut State Univeristy. The contest, which was a rematch of a ‘93 Division II playoff game won 48-28 by the Chargers, would be a “Tale of Two Halves.” In the first stanza, Edinboro’s defense, which allowed slightly more than nine points per game against Division II opponents, kept the high-powered New Haven offense out of the endzone, allowing just a field goal in the first 30 minutes. With EUP ahead 6-3 late in the second quarter, defensive back Keith Cushenberry returned a fumble 31 yards to put the Scots up 12-3 at intermission. After outgaining New Haven 156-74 in first half total yards, it appeared the Scots were on their way to victory. However, the second half would be a different story, as UNH rallied for 24 unanswered points for the win. The loss ended one of the most successful seasons in Edinboro history as the Scots matched the school record for wins and earned the pro­ gram’s third conference championship. New Haven (10-0-1) Edinboro (9-2) Edinboro traveled to Clarion with a chance to win the PSAC Western Division title and become the only team in the 14-member conference to go undefeated and untied in league play. For the second straight year, however, the Golden Eagles had a chance to spoil Edinboro’s season. In 1994, a 26-20 Clarion victory kept Edinboro out of the Division II play­ offs. This time, Edinboro would not be denied the conference title. After a scoreless first quarter, in a game played in a terential downpour, Edinboro struck first as Tony Brinson scored on a 5 yard run off tackle to put the Plaid up 6-0. Following a defensive stand. Hart hit wideout Jerry Roberts for a 33 yard gain, before tossing a 28 yard TD to Brinson out of the backfield. A two-point conversion attempt was good, as Hart called his own number and crossed the goal line to put the Scots up 14-0. Gerald Thompson scored a pair of second-half TDs, including an end run from 42 yards out. Clarion broke up the Edinboro’s bid for a second con­ secutive shutout with 4:57 left in the contest. Former Edinboro running back Elbert Cole was one of three Harlon Hill finalists in 1989, while former Fighting Scot wide receiver Ernest Priester was a finalist for the award in 1990. Cole placed third in the 1989 balloting, which was won by Texas A&l University running back Johnny Bailey, a three-time recipient. Priester was runner-up to North Dakota State University quarterback Chris Simdorn in 1990 when the Bison claimed the Division II national title. Cole also was selected an All-American in 1989, receiving first-team honors from Kodak, second-team recognition from Football Gazette and third-team status from the Associated Press. He rushed for 1,507 yards and set Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference records for touchdowns in a season (24) and points in a season (148). Cole led Edinboro to a PSAC West title, an 8-3 overall record and a No. 7 ranking in the final NCAA Division II national poll. Cole finished his Edinboro career with 3,341 yards rushing and 40 rushing touchdowns, ranking him third and second respectively in school history. Priester was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Co-Player of the Year in 1990. He also was an All-American, receiving first-team honors from Kodak, the Associated Press and Football Gazette. Priester caught 47 passes in 1990, totaling 1,102 yards (23.4 yards per catch) and 15 touchdowns. He led Edinboro to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and a 9-3 overall record. Priester also had an outstanding season in 1989, catching 49 passes for 1,128 yards (23-yard average) and a school-record 16 touchdown receptions. He is Edinboro’s all-time career leader in receptions (148), receiving yards (3,064), yards per reception (20.7) and touchdown receptions (35). Following his career at Edinboro, Priester signed a free-agent contract with the National Football League’s Denver Broncos. He later played for his hometown Cleveland Thunder of the Arena Football League. The Harlon Hill Award is named in honor of legendary Chicago Bears wide receiver Harlon Hill, who was an AllAmerican at the University of North Alabama.
