Sometime after Christmas and before the start of 1995 Spring Football, a group of seniors got together to discuss the upcoming football season. While the games were still eight months or so away, they talked about the frustration of having talented football teams during their careers at Edinboro, but never ending the season with a title. And they made a very clear commitment that they were not leaving Edinboro without championship rings on their fingers. They discussed the keys to success in 1995 and the thing that kept coming to the surface was UNITY. • • • 20-0 at halftime. But Edinboro didn’t quit. The Scots drove 90 yards on their first possession of the second half to make it 207. But Appalachian State made some big plays and earned the win. The scoreboard read 44-7, but players from both teams knew the game was closer than the final margin when they shook hands afterward. GREAT NORTHWEST UPSET The third game of the season provided another monumen tal challenge. The Scots were flying cross-country to Portland, Ore., to take on a Portland State team that was a national con tender just about each season. The Vikings, playing their last season in Division II before moving up to l-AA, were once again ranked in the top 10, and everyone wondered how this fairly untested Edinboro team would respond to the loss at Appy State and the long trip to the Great Northwest. The questions were answered early. Edinboro’s ferocious pass rush rattled Portland quarterback Kyle Allen and the highpowered Viking offense never got off the ground. With Edinboro clinging to a 6-0 lead, Schuster drilled Allen, causing a fumble that fellow defensive end Bryan Lambert returned 55 yards for a TD. Edinboro pushed the lead to 19-0 before Portland mounted a comeback. The Vikings trailed, 19-7, late in the third quarter and were threatening to make it 19-14, but the Scots’ Ron Allen refused to let it happen. Allen picked off a pass in the end zone, lateraled to David Sadler, and in a flash it was first and goal going the other way. Allen finished the game with four intercep tions to tie a school record and earn National Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Scots finished off Portland with a 26-7 upset that will go down as one of the greatest wins in school history. It sent a clear message 3,000 miles east that this Fighting Scot team was ready to compete for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title. • The Fighting Scots reported to camp in August full of enthu siasm. The opener against Hillsdale was just three weeks away. While the team had a great spring practice and things started to come together, it was suddenly time to begin the most difficult three-game non-conference schedule in school history. THE TOUGHEST STRETCH IN HISTORY In game one, things did indeed come together. Red-shirt freshman Gerald Thompson rambled 73 yards on his first colle giate carry and finished the day with his first 100-yard plus game. New quarterback Chris Hart was sharp, throwing for 233 yards and three TDs. And transfer Gilbert Grantlin showed his great skills, catching a touchdown pass. Senior Pat Schuster did his thing, sacking Hillsdale’s QB three times. In a very phys ical and well-played football game by both teams, the unity of the team already made the difference. With the score tied at 14 in the fourth quarter, Edinboro pulled together and scored a late touchdown to win 21-14. THE PSAC In the conference opener, Edinboro ovenwhelmed Lock Haven, 52-12, as the Boro rushed^r a season-best 438 yards. The Scots then beat Shippensbur^ 40-7 on the road and jumped into the NCAA Division II national rankings for the first time in ‘95. EUP nearly shutout California (31-7) at home in week six, setting up an always difficult game at Slippery Rock. With the Indiana showdown looming, the Scots fell behind for just the second time before rallying to beat a solid Rock team, 22-13. THE GAME It was finally here. lUP, and THE game was at Sox Harrison Stadium. There was an unusual sense of confidence all week. Not cockiness, just a comforting feeling that if Edinboro took care of business against the Indians, the Scots would prevail. And that’s exactly what happened. Senior linebacker Michael Sims returned an interception for a TD to put the Plaid ahead, 7-0, and the Scots never trailed. Even when freshman sensation Gerald Thompson was forced to leave the game with an injury, others stepped up, like junior Tony Brinson, who scored two TDs. Even when lUP scored a TD and two-point conversion to cut the gap to 21-18, Edinboro responded with A VALIANT EFFORT Week two presented a huge challenge for the Scots. Edinboro travelled to Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. to take on the Division l-AA Mountaineers. Not only was Edinboro playing up a level for the first time in four seasons, the Scots were taking on a team that was ranked No. 2 in the l-AA polls and coming off a win over Wake Forest of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Edinboro put up a valiant fight before eventually losing the game. The Scots missed some opportunities early and trailed 2 Team Unity Brings Scots PSAC Title! two TDs, including a clutch touchdown catch by Todd Henne, to post a convincing 35-18 victory. Odds and Ends About the ‘95 Fighting Scots WEATHERING THE HOMESTRETCH The win over lUP meant the Scots would have the oppor tunity to clinch the PSAC West title with a win the final week of the season at Clarion, the team that knocked Edinboro out of the playoff picture in 1994, with an upset. But first, Edinboro had to beat PSAC East rival Mansfield, who also upset the Scots in ‘94. Six inches of snow fell the night before the game, but just like the football team, many peo ple within the athletic department - administrators and studentathletes and coaches from other EU teams - pulled together to remove the snow from the tarp in the hours (and minutes) lead ing up to the game. Another unified effort, just to make the field playable. And once the surface was clear, the Scots again took care of business, overwhelming Mansfield, 42-0. • • • • record, the fifth time the in school history the has Edinboro finished 1995 season withprogram a 9-2 overall won nine games. • The Fighting Scots were ranked No. 8 in the final NCAA Division II poll, and advanced to the NCAA-II playoffs for the fifth time in the past seven years. • The Fighting Scots won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division title with a perfect 6-0 record, the only member of the 14-team PSAC to go unblemished in conference action. • • Edinboro finished the ‘95 regular season undefeated against NCAA Division II opponents with a 9-0 mark. The weather at Clarion the next Saturday was even worse. The field was sloppy at kickoff and got progressively worse as the game was played in a steady rain. It was a true test of char acter. Battling the conditions was as tough as fighting off a very good Clarion team, but there was nothing that could stop Edinboro’s quest for a championship. As the clock was winding down on a 28-6 victory, there was a tremendous feeling on the Scots sideline. Some players cried, some laughed. Some just spent a moment or two by them selves, reflecting on the dedication and sacrifice it took the past 11 months to be in this position. Some, like Florida native Grantlin, did swan dives in the mud. There were hugs and high fives. Coach Tom Hollman got a Gatorade bath before being carried off the field, and Edinboro’s mentor led a Scottish jig in the locker room. The Scots were CHAMPIONS! • Edinboro’s defense allowed just 128 points in 10 reg ular season games, an average of 12.8 points per game. Throw out the 44-7 loss at Appalachian State, and the Scots allowed just 84 points against Division II foes (9.3 ppg) in regular season play. Five of EUP’s 10 Division II opponents were held to seven points or less points. • Statistically, EU’s defense ranked among the Top 15 in NCAA Division II last year in four major defensive cat egories. The Scots allowed just 14.1 points per game overall (7th in Division II), 253.1 yards of total offense (11th), 97.8 yards per game rushing (15th), and 155.5 yards per game passing (7th). NCAA ACTION • The Scots defense recorded 42 sacks in ‘95, and added an additional 63 stops behind the line. That’s 105 opponent plays ending in minus yardage or 9.5/game. The next day, the team watched the live satellite telecast of the NCAA Division II playoff parings... together. Edinboro would have to travel to New Haven, Conn., to face the fifth-ranked Chargers of the University of New Haven. The Scots got off to a great start and led 12-3 at halftime, but New Haven came back in the third quarter to take a 13-12 lead. Edinboro just couldn’t get the momentum back as New Haven made several big plays to storm past the Scots, 27-12, and into the quarterfinals. Edinboro’s dream of a national title ended. It was a bitter defeat, no question, but it was a sweet season. Many years from now, people will reflect back on the ‘95 Fighting Scots. They’ll remember the nine wins, especially the ones at Portland and against lUP and at Clarion. But, perhaps more importantly, people will also remember that the 1995 Fighting Scots were the best TEAM in the PSAC because they were a unified group of talented individuals, led by a special group of seniors, putting it all on the line for each other. And the unity that Edinboro displayed during the ‘95 season will last a lifetime. • Offensively, Edinboro averaged 30.4 points per game during the regular season (33.0 ppg vs. D-ll opponents). Edinboro averaged 236.6 yards per game rushing to lead the PSAC. • Individually, red-shirt freshman running back Gerald Thompson rushed for 1,281 yards on 228 carries to lead the conference in rushing (116.5 ypg). • Senior defensive end Pat Schuster recorded 16 sacks to finish his career with a school-record 38, his jersey number. Junior linebacker Michael Sims led the team in tackles with 105 and interceptions with five, two of which he returned for TDs. 3 GOOD LUCK SCOTS were notjust your bank we re your See us for all your automotive needs! financial teammates y^Dealer New Buicks New Chevys New Chevy Trucks Used Cars Leasing Rentals Service Parts + Full Body Shop LKER BROS CHEVROLET “Celebrating our 80th Anniversary” a financial services company committed to customer satisfaction Present This Coupon By December 31, 1996 QUICKLUBEplM PNCBANK $5.00 Receive Off PA STATE INSPECTION Where Performance Counts Member FDIC Ranking Services • Trust Services • Stocks • Bonds • Mutual Funds $19.95 oil, lube, filter - no appointment necessary 29 minutes or less or your next one is free - Other Parts and Labor Extra - One Coupon Per Car Coupon Edinboro University President Frank G. Academics and Edinboro Football Henne Selected Winner of Woody Hayes National Scholar Athlete Award The Alumni Association of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania is proud of the University's continued excellence in academics, athletics, and special programs, and pleased to continue its support of the Fighting Scot football team! C3 Edinboro University of Pennsylvania senior tight end Todd Henne was named a recipient of the prestigious Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Award in December of 1995 after completing a highly successful career as a member of the Fighting Scot football program. The Woody Hayes Award is presented annually by the Sertoma Club of Columbus, Ohio, to the outstanding man and woman in each of the three NCAA divisions for “demon strated excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.” The award is a living memorial to the high standards of excellence - both on and off the field of the former Ohio State University football coach. Henne received the 1995 award for Division II men. As a speech communication major at Edinboro, Henne posted a 3.79 cumulative grade point average. He was a GTE Academic All-District selection as a senior and a national finalist for an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. On the field, Henne was a first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference pick as a senior after earning second-team recognition as a junior. He caught 37 passes for 361 yards and seven TDs as a twoyear starter. He also was a key blocker for a team that averaged 224.2 yards per game rushing and 28.7 points per contest. During the fall of his senior year, Henne was appointed to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and attended the organization’s annual meeting in Dallas. He also was a key member of Edinboro’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board and served as the sports director for the campus radio station (WFSE). He was part of a student team that produced an award-winning video on responsible drinking. “I’ve often said that Todd is one of those people you know will be successful in life,” said Edinboro head coach Tom Hollman. “He truly exemplifies what college athletics is all about, adhering to the same ideals that Coach Hayes stood for. We are very proud to have Todd represent our football program and University with this honor." College Football Preview Academic All-Americans 1996 Spring 3.0 Club Edinboro is proud of its commitment to academic achievement as well as athletic excellence. In order to provide student-athletes with the best possible chance to succeed in their chosen field of study, the athletic department employs an academic counselor, who provides tutorial services as well as monitors academic progress closely throughout the year. During the 1996 Spring semester, 26 EUP football players achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better, the most ever during the Tom Hollman era. 1995 ~ Chris Hart, Quarterback Allison Park, PA/Hampton High School Eric Zechman, Offensive Lineman Centerville, OH/Centerville High School 1994 ~ Todd Henne, Tight End Louisville, OH/Louisville High School Rick Walker, Free Safety Homestead, PA/Steel Valley High School 1993 ~ Dave Ashton, Wide Receiver Erie, PA/Strong Vincent High School Scott Mikowicz, Tight End Cattaraugus, NY/Cattaraugus High School 1992 ~ Brian Heebsh, Tight End Tiffin, OH/Tiffin High School Sean Seibert, Quarterback Painesville, OH/Thomas W. Scots in the Pros Several former Edinboro University of Pennsylvania foot ball players have received the opportunity to play profes sional football, both recently and in the past, when the school was known as Edinboro State College. Wide receiver/kick returner Gilbert Grantlin, who played for Edinboro last season, signed a free-agent contract with the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings last April. According to Minnesota officials, Grantlin has a good chance of landing a spot on the Vikings’ roster this fall. The 6-1, 182-pound Grantlin played only one season at Edinboro, but made a significant impact with his big-play abil ity. The Florida native, a Dr. C.M. Frank honorable-mention All-American, caught 44 passes for 840 yards (19.1 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns. Grantlin also had 372 yards on 17 kickoff returns (21.8-yard average) and 300 yards on 28 punt returns (10.7-yard average). He returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown in a win over Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Before Grantlin, Mike Kegarise was the last Fighting Scot to play in the NFL. The 6-6, 310-pound offensive tack le, a two-time All-American, signed a free-agent deal with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks after concluding his Edinboro career in 1993. Kegarise spent the 1994 season on the Seahawks’ injured-reserve list with a severe knee injury, but Offensive lineman Mike Kegarise spent two years with then was released the following season when Seattle the Seattle Seahawks. changed head coaches. Two other former Scots who played under current head coach Tom Hollman also signed free-agent contracts with NFL teams. Offensive guard Curtis Rose signed with the Miami Dolphins, while wide receiver Ernest Priester inked a deal with the Denver Broncos. Neither Rose nor Priester played a regular-season game in the NFL, r t " r although Cleveland native Priester later played for the Cleveland Thunder of t", the Arena Football League. Rose and Priester both were two-time All-Americans at Edinboro. The 63, 280-pound Rose earned the honors in 1990 and 1991, while the 5-9, 170pound Priester did so in 1989 and 1990. Priester was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Co-Player of the Year in 1990. He is Edinboro’s all-time career leader in receptions (148), receiving yards (3,064), yards per reception (20.7) and touchdown receptions (35). A pair of Scots who performed during the Edinboro State College days David Green and Jim Romaniszyn - played professional football in the 1970s. Both are members of the Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame, with Green being inducted in 1988 and Romaniszyn being honored in 1983. Green, a running back, played for the Cleveland Browns of the NFL and for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. An All-American, Green played for Edinboro in 1975 and 1976. He ranks fifth on the school’s all-time rushing list with 1,978 career yards in 19 games (104 yards per con test). Romaniszyn played at Edinboro from 1970-72, earning All-American honors. The 6-2, 225-pound Titusville native was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1973 as a running back, but was switched to outside linebacker. A versatile performer, Romaniszyn is the only Edinboro player to finish his Gilbert Grantlin sianed a free-aaent career with 1,000-plus yards rushing (1,266) and 1,000-plus yards receiving Gilbert Grantl n signea a free agent basketball for the Scots. contract with the Minnesota Vikings m ^ ^ ^ the spring of 1995. 11 Head Coach Tom Hollman After guiding the Fighting Scot football program to one of the finest seasons in school history last year, Tom Hollman begins his ninth season as head football coach at Edinboro. The Fighting Scots posted a 9-2 record last fall and was the only program in the 14-member Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to record a perfect 6-0 league mark. Edinboro captured the PSAC Western Division title for the second time in Hollman’s tenure, adding the ‘95 championship trophy to the one the Scots claimed in 1989. Edinboro was ranked eighth in the final NCAA Division II football poll and the program received its fifth berth to the national playoffs in the past seven years. Hollman became Edinboro’s all-time winningest coach in 1995 with a Homecoming victory over Lock Haven. He enters the ‘96 campaign with a 61-24-2 mark at Edinboro, compiling more victories and a better win ning percentage (.713) than any coach in Scot history. Hollman enters the ‘96 season ranked 11th on the NCAA Division II Winningest Active Coaches list. He has compiled an 85-35-3 overall record (.703) in 12 seasons as a college head coach, including a 24-11-1 mark in four seasons at Wooster College in Ohio. Hollman joined the Edinboro staff in January of 1988 as the program’s 11th head coach after serving as the defensive coordinator at Ohio University for three years. The Scots lost a thrilling 45-32 decision at perennial Division II power North Dakota State University, but the EU program had clearly arrived as a force in Division II football. Hollman was honored as the top coach in the East Region by the American Football Coaches Association and he also was selected PSAC West “Coach of the Year.” In 1990, Hollman guided the Fighting Scots to their first-ever NCAA II playoff win as Edinboro beat Virginia Union, 38-14, on the road to advance to the national quarterfinals. The Scots then dropped a tough 14-7 con test to PSAC rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Scots returned to the NCAA playoffs in 1992 and 1993 after runner-up finishes in^hb PSAC. In addition to team success' Hollman has coached 48 All-Americans at Edinboro, including Elbert Cole and Ernest Priester, who both placed in the top three in the voting for the Harlon Hill Award presented to the NCAA Division II Player of the Year. He also has coached play ers who have set school records for rushing, passing, receiving, quarterback sacks, and interceptions. Hollman is a 1968 graduate of Ohio Northern University, where he was a three-year starter for the foot ball team and a two-way performer as a defensive back and end on offense. He holds the school record with 13 career interceptions and earned All-American and AllDistrict honors during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Hollman also lettered in baseball for three years. Hollman earned a master of science degree in education from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1971. Head Coach Tom Hollman A chronological look at Hollman's coaching career begins in 1968 as an assistant coach at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio. From there, Hollman moved on to Greenville High School in Ohio, where he became head coach from 1971-73. His Greenville squads posted an impressive 26-2-2 mark during his three-year stay. Hollman then moved on to Fremont Ross High School as head coach for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, where his squad recorded 15 wins against three setbacks and two ties. Fremont was the Buckeye Conference champ in 1974, unbeaten at 9-0-1. In 1976, Hollman moved on to the collegiate ranks, where he was the defensive coordinator for his alma mater at Ohio Northern University. The following year, Hollman accepted the head coach position at Wooster College (OH) and guided his squad to the best four-year record in the school history (24-11-1). In 1981, Hollman took an assistant coach ing spot with Ball State University which he held through the 1984 campaign. Then, beginning in 1985, Hollman held the defensive coordinator position at Ohio University. Tom resides in Edinboro with his wife, Kandi. They have four children, Mari, Jon, Tim and Denise. Browning has coached a variety of positions at the Boro, including the offensive line for the past three years, and running backs and defensive backs in the past. Under his guidance a year ago, the Scots’ offense averaged 388.1 yards of total offense and 28.1 points per game. The offensive line helped the Scots average 224.2 yards per game rushing, 12th in NCAA Division II, and held opponents to only nine sacks in 11 games. Browning’s challenge in 1996 will be to reorganize a young offensive line hit hard by graduation. In his many capacities. Browning has coached several All-Americans such as Steve Russell, Michael Willis, Wade Smith, Georj Lewis, Mike Barnes, Elbert Cole, and Jeremy O’Day. Browning has coached at three NCAA Division I schools. Before joining the Edinboro staff in 1986, he coached receivers and running backs at Ohio State University for three years. He also coached the defensive secondary at New Mexico State University in 1982, and the following year mentored the receivers at Idaho State University, an NCAA Division l-AA playoff participant. Prior to his stint at OSU, Browning coached at Worthington and Dayton-Fairview High Schools in Ohio from 1979-81. Browning earned a master’s degree in education administration from New Mexico State in 1983, and a'BS in edu cation from Ohio State in 1981. Earlier, before transferring to OSU, Scott attended Capital University, where he played football for one season. Browning was a four-year letterman in four sports at Loudonville High School (OH) prior to his collegiate days. Scott is married to the former Lynn Hook, and has a son, Andrew Scott, 3. Tony Elliott - Defensive Coordinator/Secondary Tony Elliott, a defensive back with the Green Bay Packers from 1986-88, enters his third season as an assistant coach with the Fighting Scots, and second year as the Boro’s defensive coordinator. Last season, the Scots had one of the top defenses in Division II football, ranking in the top 15 nationally in all four major statistical categories. EU allowed an average of 14.1 points per game to rank seventh nationally. The Scots also ranked seventh in passing yards allowed (155.5 ypg), 11th in total yards allowed (253.1 ypg), and 15th in rushing defense (97.8 ypg). Elliott came to Edinboro from Wayne State (Ml) University, where he served as the team’s defen sive coordinator in 1992 and ‘93. Elliott began his coaching career at Alma College in 1990-91, before coaching at Grand Valley State University in 1991-92. His main duties at those two schools were recruiting and teaching on the defensive side of the ball. Elliott is a graduate of Central Michigan University where he majored in sports studies with a minor concentration in interpersonal communications. He was a four-year letterman for the Chippewas. Qrigmally from Detroit, Elliott played at Finney High School from 1979-82, where he was an All-State performer. * Tony and his new wife, Bynarozell, were married this summer. Nick Cronk - Defensive Line In his three years as defensive line coach, Nick Cronk has made a tremendous impact on the suc cess of the Fighting Scot defense. Last season, three of Edinboro’s four defensive linemen were All-Conference selections, includ ing senior Pat Schuster, who also was a consensus All-American pick after setting school records for sacks in a season (16) and career (38). Edinboro’s defensive front sacked opposing quarterback’s 42 times and made 63 additional tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Before coming to Edinboro, Cronk coached tight ends at Indiana University. He spent two seasons with the Hoosiers, both of them as a graduate assistant to head coach Bill Mallory. His first season in Bloomington, Cronk spent time assisting the defensive coordinator with the linebackers, and he also helped in the recruiting duties. While at lU, he graduated with a master’s degree in physical education administration. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana, Cronk was an assistant coach at Carroll Consolidated High School, handling the special teams and defensive ends. f spent his playing days at Wabash College, where he was an honorable mention performer in the Indiana College Athletic Conference and captained the 1991 league championship squad. He graduated from Wabash with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. He and his wife, Karla, reside in Edinboro with their son, Hayes Woodrow, who was born in May. 14 Edinboro Coaching Staff Mike Nelson - Wide Receivers Mike Nelson begins his second season as the wide receivers coach at Edinboro after join ing the Fighting Scot staff in 1995. Nelson served as a graduate assistant coach at Indiana University under head coach Bill Mallory for two seasons. While at Indiana, Nelson earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 1992, followed by a master’s degree in college student personnel administration in 1994. With the Hoosiers, Nelson was responsible for working with the defensive backfield, linemen and linebackers. Furthermore, he coordinated lU’s video program and assisted with recruiting. He has also served as an intern in the Indiana University athletic director’s office. His coaching experience also includes a position as assistant at Bloomington High School South, his alma mater, where he helped in coaching the defensive backs, wide receivers and special teams. Mike is single and enjoys playing basketball. Mike McCoy - Running Backs Mike McCoy enters his first season with the Fighting Scots program in 1996 and will be responsible for coaching the Fighting Scot running backs. Mike comes to Edinboro from West Virginia State College, where he served as the offensive coordinator during the 1995 season. Prior to last year, McCoy coached both tight ends and running backs at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1991-94. A 1987 graduate of Marshall University in West Virginia, Mike also coached wide receivers at Rutgers University for one season (1990). He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Marshall, under head coach George Chaump. As an undergraduate, McCoy played running back for a Marshall team that finished the 1987 season as the NCAA Division l-AA runner-up. Mike and his wife. Heather, live in the Edinboro area. John Brenneman - Linebackers John “Butch” Brenneman enters his first season coaching collegiate football. A 1986 graduate of Edinboro, he will be responsible for coaching the Scots linebackers in 1996. John played linebacker for the Fighting Scots from 1982-85 and served as a team captain his senior season. Prior to coming to EUP, Brenneman served as an assistant coach at Joppatowne (Md.) High School. He also serves in the U.S. Army National Guard, where he previously worked as an assistant athletic director. Last season, Edinboro won the PSAC West title, and posted a 9-2 record under head coach Tom Hollman, fea turing a defense that allowed just 9.3 points per game against Division II opponents during the regular season. Seven starters return from that unit, including one of the top linebackers in the country, 6-2, 220-pound senior Michael Sims, who led the team with 105 tackles and returned two interceptions for touchdowns to earn AllAmerica honors. Edinboro also returns its other two starting lineback ers, a secondary with four experienced players including both starting safeties, and two of its four starters on the defensive line. In addition to Sims, senior Jerry Roberts and junior Emery Martin return at linebacker after solid 1995 cam paigns. The secondary also is experienced as both starting safeties, seniors Ron Allen and senior Brian Decker return. Allen had four interceptions in EU’s upset victory at Portland (OR) State University last season to earn National Player of the Week honors. Decker is an out standing athlete who high-jumped seven feet this spring. Senior Jermaine Carswell and sophomore David Sadler could move from safety to corner, but expect Hollman to add a quality recruit or two in the secondary. Up front, the Scots return both defensive tackles, 6-5, 280-pound se'nior Jeff Traversy and 6-1, 260-pound senior Matt Gentile. However, the Boro must replace two outstanding defen sive ends, including con sensus All-American Pat Schuster, who set a school record for career sacks (38), and AllConference performer Bryan Lambert. QB Chris Hart leads the Scots The strength of the 18 Jeff Traversy leads the Scots defensive front Fighting Scots offense, which returns six starters, will be the exact opposite as last year, when the Boro featured a veteran offensive line and major questions at quarterback, running back and receiver entering the season. This year, senior quarterback Chris Hart returns after starting and maturing an entire season. Hart threw for 1,803 yards and 13 TDs last season, completing 47.9 percent of his passes. Edinboro also returns both of its starting running backs. Gerald Thompson, a 6-0, 215-pound tailback, rushed for 1,281 yards and 10 TDs on 228 carries (5.6 ypa) as a red-shirt freshman. He was selected the PSAC West Rookie of the Year, first-team All-Conference and first-team All-Northeast Region^ He’ll be joined in the backfield once again by 6-0/188-pound senior Tony Brinson, a versatile performer who rushed for 649 yards and 7 TDs and also caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two additional scores. One of the most versatile backs in the league, Brinson was a second-team All-PSAC pick. Two experienced receivers, junior Quentin Ware-Bey (22 receptions, 289 yards) and senior Terry Roberts (12 catches, 181 yards) also are back, along with tight end John Sabo (3 catches, 29 yards, 1 TD). Up front, Edinboro must replace four of its five start ing linemen, but the one returnee, 6-3, 285-pound senior Jeremy O’Day, is a two-time All-American. He’ll probably play both guard and tackle. If the offense can fill a few holes up front, an experi enced and talented group of returnees are in the fold to put some points on the board. However, the strength of the 1996 Fighting Scots will once again be defense, and the Scots may be just good enough to win another title. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WFSE-FM (88.9). SCOTS AND ROCKETS IN THE PSAC Edinboro has won its first two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games this season and enter Saturday’s contest 3-2 overall. The Scots have posted a 39-9-2 record (.800) against PSAC West foes since head coach Tom Hollman was hired in 1988. The Fighting Scots won PSAC West titles in 1995 and 1989 and finished as the Western Division runner-up in 1990, ‘93 and ‘94. After a 14-13 win at California University of Pennsylvania last week, Edinboro has now won eight straight PSAC contests, dating back to a sea son-ending defeat to Clarion (24-20) in 1994. After a 32-31 loss to top-rated Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Slippery Rock now stands at 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC. The Rock was 7-4 overall last year and 4-2 in PSAC West action. LAST WEEK The Fighting Scots are coming off a 14-13 vic tory at Cal last Saturday night. In that contest, the Scots jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on the strength of Gerald Thompson’s 4-yard TD run and Denorse Mosley’s 91-yard touchdown reception from Chris Hart. Mosley’s catch was the Boro’s longest reception since 1980, when Tim Beacham caught a 92-yard pass from Steward Ayers against Shippensburg. California fought back to pull with one, but a 45-yard field goal with six seconds left fell short, and the Scots held on for the win. Slippery Rock is coming off a 32-31 defeat to No. 1-ranked Indiana last Saturday. The Rock had a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime with an extra-point attempt with 1:42 left in the con test, but the kick was blocked by I UP. Despite RB Rick Magulick’s 124-yard performance, the Rockets dropped their first conference game. PREVIOUSLY Edinboro has posted wins over Hillsdale (35-21 on Sept. 9), Shippensburg (31-17 on Oct. 5) and California (14-13 on Oct. 12). The Scots have dropped contests to CarsonNewman (42-12 on Sept. 14) and the University at Buffalo (17-7 on Sept. 28). Slippery Rock has defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (26-24 on Sept. 14), Fairmont State (34-21 on Sept. 21) and East Stroudsburg (24-10 on Sept. 28). The Rock lost to Youngstown State (22-0 on Sept. 9), West Chester (31-21 on Oct. 5) and lUP (32-31 on Oct. 12). BORO AT HOME, ROCK ON THE ROAD Edinboro has posted a 34-5-1 record (.863) at Sox Harrison Stadium since Hollman became head coach in 1988. The Scots have also won 10 of their last 11 home games. Edinboro defeated Shippensburg in their only home game in 1996. Slippery Rock Is 1-2 on the road in 1996. The Rockets lone road win came at WVa. Wesleyan. The last time the Rock won at Sox Harrison Stadium was in 1992, when they beat EUP 10-7. TOUGH SCHEDULES Not only have the Scots played four of their first five games on the road, their opposition has also been especially tough. Carson-Newman, EU’s second opponent, was ranked third In Division II at the time, then moved up to No. 1 before suffering their first defeat. Buffalo, an NCAA Division l-AA program, is now 52 on the season. The Bulls are making the jump up to NCAA Division l-A status in 1999. Slippery Rock, In addition to playing No.1 Indiana last week, has also played Division l-AA power Youngstown (Ohio) State. THE COACHES Edinboro’s Hollman has posted an 88-37-3 overall record (.699) in 13 seasons as a college head coach, including a 64-26-2 mark (.707) in nine years at Edinboro. Hollman was ranked 11th in winning percentage among active NCAA Division II coaches entering the ’96 season and 20th in total victories. He , ’■.*5 ‘ 5>,'}fl’ became Edinboro’s all-time winningest coach last season, leading the Scots to a 9-2 overall record. Edinboro has captured a pair of PSAC-West titles under Hollman (1989 and 1995), and the Scots have qualified for the NCAA Division II play offs in five of the past seven seasons. Hollman is 52-1 vs. Slippery Rock while at Edinboro. Slippery Rock Is coached by Dr. George Mihallk, I who Is In his ninth year with the Rockets. Mihalik owns a career record of 49-36-4 (.573), ail at the Rock. Mihallk is 2-5-1 vs the Fighting Scots. THE SERIES The schools will meet for the 65th time on Saturday, with the Rockets holding a 37-20-7 edge in victories. The two schools began the rivalry back in 1926. The ‘Boro has won the previous three games between the two schools and has won 10 out of the last 15 meetings. The last time the team’s met at Sox Harrison, Edinboro trained 39-23 before one of the most amazing comebacks in school history. Edinboro scored 36 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 59-39. LASTYEAR Last season. Slippery Rock opened the scoring with a 17-yard TD run in the first quarter. Edinboro led 16-7 at halftime on the strength of two Gilbert Grantlin TD receptions. After RB Tony Brinson scored on a 1-yard run, the Scots extended their lead to 22-6. The Rock would cut the Scots’ lead to 22-13, but the Edinboro defense, led by Bryan Lambert’s four sacks, would hold off the Rockets. Partners in Crime: Scots’ Safeties Second to None Keyes has 15 catches for 172 yards and a TD. Defensive back/kick returner Denorse Mosley has added another big-play threat to the EUP passing attack, as he also lines up at wide receiver. He caught a 91-yard TD last week at Cal. I THE BORO DEFENSE The Scots’ defense is allowing 22 points per contest this season, placing them seventh In the PSAC. The Scots are also second in pass defense In the conference, allowing only 128.2 yards pass ing per contest this season. Individually, Edinboro is led by senior linebacker Michael Sims, who leads the Scots in total tackles with 60. Sims had 15 stops, including two for loss es, against the Vulcans last week. Junior defensive back Brian Decker addfed 10 tackles a week ago, and now has 55 in 1996. Two week’s ago. Decker returned an interception 44 yds vs Shippensburg for his first-ever TD. Senior defen sive tackle Matt Gentile has three of the Scots 10 sacks, while senior tackle Jeff Traversy has added two this season after eight last year. A LOOK AT THE ROCK On offense, senior QB Chad Vogt directs the Rocket attack. The left-hander threw for 2,188 yards last season after transferring from Youngstown State. He has completed 64 of 142 (.451) attempts for 887 yards with six TD’s and only one I NT in 1996. Vogt also can run with the ball when he needs to, as he also has gained 135 yards I I I I rushing in 1996. RB Rick Magulick (91-455, 3 TDs) and DaMon Macklln (80-387, 5 TDs) give the Rockets a solid 1-2 punch^ln the backfield. The Rock’s top receivers are seniors Jeremy Rock (34476, 2 TDs) and Calvin Kuiken (6-106). Defensively, Slippery Rock is led by LB Rodney Wilson, who leads the Rock with 70 total tackles. SCOTS TO WATCH On offense, the Scots are led by senior quarter back Chris Hart. In 1996, Hart has completed 74 of 140 (.529) passes for 875 yards. Hart has thrown five TDs and five INTs in 1996. I I I I I I I I I I By Kevin Kleps, Meadville Tribune I I I I Two quarters earlier, Shippensburg quarterback Mike Carver narrowly snuck a completion to Jamie Ware over the outstretched hands of Edinboro.free safety Brian Decker. The second time around he wasn’t so lucky. Decker stepped in front of a Carver aerial with 5:52 remaining in the Scots’ 31-17 win over the Red Raiders on Saturday and raced 44 yards for what would prove to be a crucial touchdown in the PSAC opener. "They ran that play earlier and I stepped In front and just got a fingertip on It and the guy still caught the ball," Decker said afterwards. "I knew it was coming again when I saw the alignments. Coach, he does a good job preparing us during the week so I knew the pattern was coming. I saw the quarterback set and I just took off." The touchdown - which would gain significance when Shippensburg, down 31-17, recovered an onside kick with 3:55 remaining - was Decker’s first since his high school days when he was a three-time Section 6 all conference quarterback at Portville Central. Decker’s rise to his current status as one of the premier safeties in the conference has been almost as fast as his dart to the end zone versus Shipp. The Portville N.Y. native walked on at Edinboro after three years at Fredonia State, where he did not compete athletically. Although Decker cut his athletic involvement at Fredonia State from four sports (In high school) to zero, his adjustment after three years away from the playing arena has been phenomenal. As a junior at the ‘Boro In 1995, Decker gave defensive coordinator Tony Elliott an effective combination of coverage skills and bone-rattling hits in the secondary. He finished sixth for the Scots in tackles with 58, while adding seven passes broken up, one interception, a sack and one forced fumble. Decker racked up 15 tackles to go along with his interception against Shippensburg to raise his team leading total to 45 (23 solo) on the season. Decker also placed fifth In the high jump at the NCAA Division II national championships last spring, which would mean an All-American status in two sports within one year’s time should Decker get honored after the Scots conclude defense of their PSAC title this season. Decker teams with Dave Sadler and Ron Allen to give the 'Boro possibly the PSAC’s best safety corps. Allen, a senior, led the secondary and finished third on the team with 84 tackles last season. He also picked off four passes In a huge win at Portland State to match Safety Brian Decker returned an interception 44 yards for a TD in the Scots last home game a school record. Allen, though, has been mainly a reserve in ’96 due to the emergence of Sadler. Sadler finished one notch below Decker last season with 53 stops to give the safety triumvirate three of the top seven slots on the ‘Boro tackle charts. Sadler has been one of the primary reasons Edinboro ranks third In the PSAC in pass defense despite a brutal schedule. The junior leads Edinboro with two interceptions. Including one against Shipp, and is third in tackles with 33. Sadler’s 26 solo pops are tied with Sims for the team high as well. Allen has added 12 tackles for a cumulative figure of 90 stops (56 solo) for the trio. Sadler stepped in front of a Carver pass to put a halt to the Shippensburg comeback attempt in the closing minute Saturday and returned it 30 yards to the ‘Boro 48-yard line. Sadler was pleased to get the pick, but he wanted to join his partner at safety. Decker, in the scoring department. Yeah (it was nice), but It would’ve been even sweeter if I would’ve taken it up the sidelines," Sadler said. "I tried. Next time." Sadler smiled when reminiscing about his shot of living out a defensive back’s dream. He knew he’d get another chance, as will his partners in crime at the safety position. Mike Whitley Mike Turner “"S’ lSrR« Harris jun or CB ju?L ‘96 Edinboro Opponents I II I I 1996 Red Raider Outlook Shippensburg enters the 1996 season with hopes of improving upon the 3-8 overall record of a season ago. Coach Rocky Rees begins his seventh season at the helm for the Red Raiders. The Ship lost a great deal on offense, as the departures of OT Dwaine Schultz, TE Brian Stolarick and RB’s Seth Holderman and Tom Coleman will have to be filled. Mike Carver will lead the offense in 1996. The quarterback threw for more than 1,400 yards and 8 TD’s last season. Returning targets for Carver are all-star candidate Mike Buglia, who caught 6 TD’S while averaging almost 20 yards per catch. Veteran offensive linemen Ron Luffy, Andre Pelletier, Matthew Stauffer and Mike laquinta will protect Carver and pave the way for RB Mark Madson, who rushed for 405 yards last season. Defensively, Ship will miss LB’S Martin Pepe, Chris Willingham, Kyle Kane and DB Shawn Brown. All four were 2nd-team All-PSAC last season. Leading the way on defense is Steve McTaggart, who led the down linemen in tackles last season with 59. He also had four sacks. Michael Vnuk, the Red Raiders third leading tackier in 1995 will anchor the linebacking corps. DB’s Jef Brown and Dean Owens also return to the secondary. Brown had 2 INT’s to go along with his 71 1996 Bull Outlook After an injury-filled 1995 campaign, the University at Buffalo looks to be very competitive in the upcoming season. Injuries and one of the nation’s most difficult Division l-AA schedules took its toll on the Bulls after a 2-1 start last season. Second-year head coach Graig Cirbus returns 15 starters (7 offense, 6 defense, 2 specialists) and 28 lettermen from last year’s 3-8 squad. Offensively, the Bulls will be led by senior TE Chris Behan, an All-American in 1994, and senior Gerald Carlson (K/P), an All-American candidate who ranked fourth in the nation in field goals in 1995. The Bulls also return junior QB Mark Taylor, who threw for 1,218 yards last season and junior running back Anthony Swan, who rushed for 968 yards in 1995. Defensively, UB returns honorable mention All-American Graig Guest (LB). Guest led the team last season with 161 tackles, includ ing 15 tackles for a loss. UB will call upon the leadership of Guest and the experience of the five returning starters and the 14 returning DB Jon Jon 21-0 21-35 24-21 29-6 41-21 24-25 42-0 38-10 40-21 39-30 37-26 7-28 1996 Schedule Sept. 5 Lane (TN) Sept. 14 EDINBORO Sept. 21 Presbyterian Sept. 28 at Elon Oct. 5 at Catawba Oct. 12 Wingate Oct. 19 at Mars Hill Oct. 26 Gardner-Webb Nov. 2 at Lenoir-Rhyne Nov. 9 Newberry 7 OO 7:00 7;30 2;00 i ;30 tba 1 ;3o 3;30 2.00 tba 1995 Results W Fordham L Lafayette W at Illinois State L at Connecticut L Villanova L Maine L Massachusetts L at Hofstra L Central State at Youngstown State W L Boston University 49-13 17-24 19-6 25-26 3-28 6-19 9-33 14-17 7-33 9-6 40-54 Aug. 29 Sept. 7 Sept. 14 Sept. 21 Sept. 28 Oct. 5 Oct. 12 Oct. 19 Nov. 2 Nov. 9 Nov. 16 1996 Schedule Illinois State Connecticut at Colgate at Lehigh EDINBORO Cornell Youngstown St. at Massachusetts at Hofstra New Haven at Maine 1995 Results W Shepherd L Bloomsburg L West Chester L Millersville L Indiana (PA) L EDINBORO L Clarion W Lock Haven L Kutztown W California (PA) L Slippery Rock 7:00 7:00 1:00 1:00 7:00 1:30 1:30 1:30 1:00 1:30 1:00 39 24-21 34-41 14-25 3-20 21-62 7-40 9-31 73-29 6-35 26-15 16-34 Sept. 7 Sept. 14 Sept. 21 Sept. 28 Oct. 5 Oct. 12 Oct. 19 Oct. 26 Nov. 2 Nov. 9 Nov. 16 1996 Schedule at Jam. Two home losses in September put the Indians in a hole, and all post-season dreams were shattered when Edinboro handed the Indians a 35-18 defeat test Ortober. After a “disappointing” 8-3 season, head coach Frank Cignetti looks to rebound with a serious run at the PSAC title and another charge into post-season play for the eighth time in 10 years. UP must replace 13 starters, but the Indians have several key play ers returning. Tailback James Suber, the ECAC Player of the Year and linebacker Eugene Miller, who was voted the team's Outstanding hreshr^an, lead the way. Also returning are four All-PSAC playersDE Mike Marshall, OT Darren Walton, FL Mario Hardison, and DT Shannon Manning. Tony Hardy, who caught 30 passes for 497 yards test season, and FS Reggie Carter, who led the team with 69 solo tackles, also return. Under the direction of second-year head coach Vincent Williams, the Wolves played some tough competition in Pennsylvania schools Indiana, Bloomsburg and Millersville while finishing 0-10-1 in 1995. The test time Edinboro and Cheyney met was in 1970, as then Edinboro State College defeated the Wolves 37-0. Prior to that meeting, the only other contest between the two schools was a 13-12 CU victory in 1967. With seven starters returning to the defensive side of the ball, CU will try to hold opponents under the 46 points per game allowed test season. Leading the way for the defense will be senior DB Kenneth Pickron, junior LB Frank McDermott and junior Tiko Gilliam. On offense, Cheyney returns 5 starters, among them, junior quarterback Yuseff Davison. Davidson will look to junior wideout Terrance Johnson, as he returns to the Wolf lineup for his third season of action. Up front, CU will run behind the blocking of senior Calvin Wade, who at 6-4, 330, should be able to help the Cheyney running game.
