The '92 Homecoming game is sponsored by Troyer Farms, Inc. It marks the Boro's third home contest in four starts this season. The Records Edinboro remains behind lUP in the Division II and Northeast Regional rank ings and boasts a 3-0 record while Clarion is winless in three tries in '92. The Scots have run off consecutive wins over Buffalo (35-13), Northwood (37-13) and Southern Connecticut (41-0) but face their toughest test in Clarion. Golden Eagle opponents for '92 are a combined 13-1, whereas Edinboro's are just 2-9. Clarion has dropped straight decisions to defending I-AA national champion Youngstown State (48-7), Divi sion II's 13th ranked New Haven (48-47) and the NAIA 4th ranked squad West minster (21-11). Under fifth-year head coach Tom Hollman, Edinboro is tough at home with 21 wins in 24 games (21-2-1) at Sox Harri son Stadium. The Series The Scots are on the short end dating back to 1926, as the Golden Eagles hold a 32-29-2 edge. Edinboro has won five of the last six meetings including a tough 17-9 decision in Clarion a year ago. The last time the Golden Eagles took the Scots in Edinboro was 1984,35-24. The Coaches Hollman owns 32 wins against 14 losses and one tie (.688) directing the Scot fortunes including an 18-5-1 mark in western division play. The Boro has earned two trips to the national playoffs (1989 and 1990) under Hollman including a crowning as PSAC co-champions in '89. His nine-year collegiate mark of 56-25-2 (.691) includes four years at Wooster Col lege (Ohio). Clarion is led by veteran Gene Sobolewski who owns a 49-42 record in his 10th year as head coach. Respected across the PSAC, Sobolewski enters his 22nd year overall at Clarion. Named head coach in 1983, he has helped Clarion to a .647 winning percentage since his arrival as an assistant in 1971. The Offenses Through week #3, the Scots ranked 7th in scoring offense, tallying 37.7 points 2 Inside the Numbers (Three-Game Averages) Edinboro Clarion Scoring Total Offense Rushing Offense Passing Offense 37.7 PPG 440.7 YPG 276.3 YPG 164.4 YPG 11.7 PPG 367.0 YPG 174.0 YPG 193.0 YPG Scoring Defense Total Defense Rushing Defense Passing Defense 8.7 PPG 160.7 YPG 83.7 YPG 77.0 YPG 39.0 PPG 443.7 YPG 243.0 YPG 200.7 YPG per game. The ground attack is 10th best in Division II due to PSAC leader Larry Jackson (54 att., 414 yds., 7 TDs) and backup Derrick Russell (35, 166, 2 TDs). QB Jody Dickerson (16, 51, 1) is also a threat while the Scots feature a trio of fullbacks in Tom Tedder (10, 36, 2 TDs), Chris Snyder (4, 35) and Wade Westerfield (6,23). The passing attack is solid with Dick erson connecting on 28-of-53 passes for 430 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 intercep tions. Wrentie Martin leads the receiving corps with 18 catches for 330 yards and 1 score. Dave Ashton (5, 68, 1 TD), Paul Stone (3, 32) and Brian Heebsh (2, 32) are also threats. Tackles Mike Kegarise and Tony Tighe, guards Bill Sparenberg and Scott Nickel and center Gordy Hitchcock clear the way for the Scots to average 440.7 yards per game, 7th best in Division II. Clarion can score behind the efforts of veteran QB Tim Myers (41, 85, 472, 5 TDs, 3 INTs) and RB Damien Henry (53 att., 283, 2 TDs). FB Jay Tonini (32, 149) gives Clarion good balance. Myers' top targets include tight end Tim Brown (19, 164) and speedster Mar lon Worthy (11, 214, 3 TDs). The Golden Eagles can score, netting 47 points against New Haven while also getting over 300 yards of total offense in the loss at Youngstown. The Defenses Through the first three games, the Scots ranked 3rd nationally in total defense (160.7 ypg). All-American Jason Perkins leads the team with 35 tackles including 25 unassisted. He has also added 3 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 2 deflec tions, 2 forced fumbles and a blocked extra point in '92. Michael Sims (20, 4 def., 1 rec.) and Michael Edwards (15) make up a solid linebacking corps. Up front, ends Antho ny Ross (19, 4 sacks, 4 for loss) and Devas Simmons (15, 4 for loss, 3 forced fumbles. 3 2 rec.) have been a force while tackles Russell Cray (20, 2 for loss) and Rob Harmer (11, 2 for loss) make up the front four. The secondary has been quiet, but anchors a squad that ranks 9th nationally in pass defense efficiency. All-American cornerback Georj Lewis (6, 1 forced fum ble) starts his 38th straight game while Mario Houston (8, 1 for loss) is at the other "DB" spot. Free safety Mike Barnes (14) has the Scots lone interception while strong safety Steve Russell (6) rounds out the starting 11. Clarion has surrendered plenty of points, but to great offensive squads. AllAmerican linebacker Damon Mazoff leads the club with 44 stops, including 18 against Westminster. LB Frank Andrews (36,2 sacks) is also very active. Tackle Jason Reinhart (32) leads the team in sacks with 4 and anchors the inte rior while DB Sean Spencer (39) has also turned in a solid year. Overall, DB Brad Kline may be having the finest year for the Golden Eagles. In three games, Kline has been credited with 36 stops, 1 inter ception, 2 recoveries and 2 fumbles caused. Special Teams/Kicking Game Edinboro has an offensive weapon in PK Scott Rupert who has connected on 14-of-15 extra points and 3-of-7 field goals. His long three-pointer is 30 yards. Gary Lhotsky (10, 38.7 ypp, L55) handles the punt duties. Clarion counters with kicker Paul Cramer (3-5 fg, 4-5 PATs) and punter Tim Myers (21,37.2 ypp, L59). The respective kickoff return teams are potent as Edinboro's Larry Jackson (3 ret., 32.0 ypr) and Clarion's Marlon Wor thy (9, 17.2 ypr) can break the big play. Worthy also handles the punt returns (7, 9.7 ypr) while the Scots will counter with Michael Barnes (6,18) or Dave Ashton (29). Go Fighting Scots! Alumni Association 6 President Foster F. Diebold dent Diebold has positioned Edin boro University to meet the chal lenges of the 1990s, as well as those that will face public higher education in the 21st century. The Orange, New Jersey, native is a graduate of Monmouth College and also holds a master of arts in educa tional administration from Seton Hall University. He has met coursework requirements for a doctorate in edu cation at Rutgers University and is currently completing the dissertation requirement for the Ph.D. program in higher education at the University of Pittsburgh. Foster F. Diebold Now in his thirteenth year as president of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Foster F. Diebold is the fourteenth chief executive officer of the institution of higher learning that has come to acclaim in the last decade as one of Pennsylvania's and the nation's finest. He has brought a vigorous educational and moral lead ership, a strengthening of the spirit of community, a clear sense of direction and purpose, and a dimension of multicultural pluralism and diversity. Much has been accomplished during President Diebold's tenure. The University has returned to finan cial health. Significant facilities and grounds improvements have been achieved, with several of the historic structures on campus restored to their original splendor. Academic programs have been emphasized and improved, with more than 100 degree offerings now available. Enrollment gains have been unprecedented in both numbers and academic quality. International linkages have been established with institutions in sever al other countries, and Edinboro Uni versity's disabled student services program continues to gamer acclaim as one of the finest among all colleges and universities in the United States. Widely recognized as a leader in edu cation both here and abroad. Presi Prior to his presidency of Edin boro University, President Diebold was president of the University of Alaska from 1977 to 1979. Before that, he was executive secretary to the Board of Regents and special assis tant to the president of the University of Alaska Statewide System. From 1969 to 1976, he was director of Development and Planning at Kean College in New Jersey and a member of the graduate faculty at that institu tion; and from 1965 to 1969, he was assistant superintendent of the Nep tune Township (New Jersey) Public Schools. Recognized for his extensive experience in the field of education management. President Diebold's scholarly achievements in the disci pline of applied ethics in higher edu cation deserve special mention. The model statement he authored for the American Association of State Col leges and Universities, "Ethical Prac tices for College Presidents," was unanimously adopted by that profes sional organization and published as policy for the chief executives of its nearly 400 member institutions nationwide. It is the first formally adopted ethical practices and policy statement for higher education presi dents. For his leadership on an interna tional scale and for his many contri7 buttons to the advancement of higher education and enrichment of an emerging culture in Pakistan, Presi dent Diebold was decorated with prestigious gold medals from three Pakistani universities. The awards for educational eminence were presented during visits to the Edinboro campus by official Pakistani delegations. Most recently. President Diebold was honored by the Government of Pakistan with the presentation of the degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) presented at the Government House in the City of Karachi. The cer emony was attended by the presi dents of the various universities holding linkage agreements together with Edinboro University and many high-ranking officials of the Govern ment of Pakistan. A staunch advocate of a statewide system of public universi ties in Pennsylvania, President Diebold supported the enabling legis lation for the State System of Higher Education (Act 188 of 1982) and saw the State System come to existence in 1983 as a member of the transition team. He currently serves on the Sys tem's Executive Council of Presidents and on the boards of the Pennsylva nia Academy for the Profession of Teaching, the Pennsylvania State Ath letic Conference, and the University Center at Harrisburg. Active in community affairs, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Erie Conference on Community Development and the United Way of Erie County, the Board of Corpora tors of both St. Vincent Health Center and Hamot Medical Center, and on the Executive Committee of the French Creek Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is also a member of the Marine Bank Advisory Board, the Advisory Board of the McMannis Educational Trust Fund, and the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Corporation Scholarship Review Committee. Athletic Director James K. McDonald Edinboro University's athletic program was placed under the talented and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald in July of 1981. Increased emphasis on fund raising to provide a sound scholarship foundation has become his top priority while numerous changes and innovations have also keyed the Scots' athletic program under his direction. Through his efforts more than $4 million has been raised during the past eleven years. The funds generated by the energetic athletic director's efforts will be used to assist Edinboro's men and women athletes who compete in the Scots sixteen intercollegiate sports. In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected winning tradition in intercollegiate athletics, the former health and physical education professor has vastly expanded the University's summer activities. Sixty camps were sponsored by the Fighting Scots Booster Club this past summer on the University's campus. Sox Harrison Stadium was the site for the Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers first scrimmage, an event the veteran ath letic director hopes to bring back to the area each year. McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12 years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span, his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Confer ence crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that netted trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams set 27 University records and made 19 post-season appearances while four of his players were named All-Americans. Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald served as assis tant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956 graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia. In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also holds a master's "degree in health from the University of Buffalo. As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPI basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the sec ond leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led his team to the national basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Toumament Team in 1959 and 1960. In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the Year by the eastern seaboard coaches and that same year was honored as one of the top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll. McDonald's honors also include selection to the West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and member ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a record of extensive commu nity involvement. He was Little League Baseball director for four years and also held a four-year post as a member of the General McLane School Board. He and his wife, Mary Lou, have three sons - Mark, Mike and Matthew. 9 The funds generated by the energetic athletic director's efforts will be used to assist Edinboro's men and women athletes. The next time yod want a fresh, hot meal, let us melt one up for you. It's hard to say that a 7-4 season was disappointing. But when expectations were to advance to the NCAA II playoffs for the third consecutive year, the 1991 won-lost mark was not what the Scots had envisioned. Anticipating that the 1992 pre-season polls will have Edinboro back in the national picture. Football Gazette will rank the Scots number eight. It appears the pressure will be on once again. Expecta tions yes, but the Fighting Scots' recent success has created them. The Hollman Era of 1988-92 has Edinboro posting a 29-14-1 slate, includ ing 18 of 24 wins in the rugged Pennsyl vania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Two trips to the national play offs, co-championship of the PSAC, forty school records, two Division II Player of the Year finalists and 17 All-Americans are among the accomplishments. All in the last four years. Tom Hollman begins his fifth season with the Scots and boasts a 53-25-2 record in eight years on the Division II level. His winning percentage of .663 is among the nation's best in small-college football. Edinboro returns 33 lettermen and 17 starters (including specialties) in 1992 and should once again battle for the PSAC West title. Home encounters include the University of Buffalo and Northwood (MI), as well as PSAC western division rivals Clarion (Homecoming), Slippery Rock and Shippensburg. The Scots travel to Southern Con necticut, Lock Haven, California, lUP and Millersville with hopes of extending their season beyond November 14. In 1991, Edinboro played five of their first seven games on the road, and ulti mately it cost them a trip to the national playoffs. This season shows more of a balance, with the Plaid hosting three of the first four games at Sox Harrison Sta dium. With a 19-2-1 home record under Hollman, look for the Scots to come out of the blocks quickly in '92. A LOOK AT THE SCOTS 290 Plum Street Edinboro, PA Phone 734-4600 HOURS Sunday thru Thursday 6:00 a.m. - Midnight Friday & Saturday OPEN 24 HOURS 10 Skill Positions PSAC West Rookie of the Year Jody Dickerson returns at quarterback with veteran Sean Seibert ready to step in if needed. Dickerson connected on 53 per cent of his passes last year, covering 1,382 yards and eight scores, while rushing for another 240 yards and three touchdowns. Seibert can still lay claim to Edinboro's lone NCAA II playoff win when he engi neered a convincing 38-14 margin at Vir ginia Union in 1990. A veteran crew of receivers returns, led by Wrentie Martin (39-607-3 TDs), Paul Stone (9-117) and tight end Brian Heebsh (13-162-2 TDs). Martin and Heebsh were PSAC West second team selec tions in '91 and all three bring a wealth of game experience to the offense. The running back position is solid with Derrick Russell (68-403-3 TDs), Larry Jackson (29-188-2 TDs), Corey Hill and Vidal Farr. Someone will have to carry the bulk with the departure of AllAmerican Lester Frye. Three-year starter Tom Tedder (41-173-1 TD) returns at full back and could be the PSAC West's best at this spot. Tedder will get plenty of backup support from sophomore Chris Snyder. Offensive Line With the graduation of All-American Curtis Rose and All-PSAC pick Wally Spisak, the Scots must fill two rather large pairs of shoes. PSAC West second team choice Mike Kegarise has pro potential with his 6-7, 300 pound frame. Starters Scott Nickel, Tony Tighe and Gordy Hitchcock also return, as will Chad Wallick, Det Betti and Dave Nowacki. Quality depth is key, so Hollman will most likely call on a pair of top recruits to help anchor the offensive front. Defensive Line Gone is All-American tackle John Messura, so the interior will highlight some new faces. Experience does return in Otha Davidson (22 tackles) and Russell Cray (42) while LB Devas Simmons (36) is likely to convert to a down lineman spot. End Anthony Mariani (48 tackles, 8 for loss) also returns and had a solid '91 in his initial year. Messura's spot must be filled if the Scots are to improve on their 150-yard per game rushing yield of last year. Linebackers All-American and All-PSAC West choice Jason Perkins (135 tackles) returns to solidify a very good corps of lineback ers. Perkins was sensational in'91, picking off two passes, recording nine tackles for 11 losses and adding four sacks to his team high tackle mark. Perkins has been cho sen as a 1992 pre-season first team AllAmerican by the Sporting News. Returning sophomore Steve Russell will give help after recording 41 tackles in '91 and tying Perkins for the team lead in interceptions with two. Veteran Steve Nagy and newcomer Mike Edwards both looked good in spring workouts and will make heavy contributions. Simmons can play both the down position and linebacker and should be an impact player in 1992. Secondary With the return of All-American Georj Lewis and PSAC West second team pick Mike Barnes, the Scots' defensive backfield returns plenty of experience. 1990 PSAC West Rookie of the Year Mario Houston will be at the other corner spot. Houston was in on 75 stops last year and led the team with 12 pass deflections. Lewis was a third team choice by Football Gazette last year and has started 34 consecutive games at the corner. His 50 tackles also earned him a first-team spot on the PSAC West All-Star squad. Barnes, a free safety/linebacker with outstanding speed and toughness, was third on the squad in '91 with 83 tackles. Only linebackers Perkins and Joel Marratta (88) were in on more tackles than Barnes. Backup quarterback Sean Seibert has the inside track at the vacant free safety spot, vacated by four-year starter Wade Smith. Mike White and a host of top cal iber freshmen give Edinboro a great sec ondary in 1992. Specialties A pair of starters return in punter Gary Lhotsky and place-kicker Scott Rupert. Lhotsky earned second team PSAC West honors a year ago with his 38.1 yards per punt. His average was sec ond best in the division and fifth overall in the state. Lhotsky has averaged just under 37 ypp over his two-year career. Rupert, just a sophomore, had a solid freshman year in '91, finishing second on the team with 36 points. He was true on 5-of-7 field goal tries and converted 21 extra point attempts. A great all-around athlete, Rupert led the Scot baseball team last spring with a .398 batting average. Hollman came to Edin boro from Ohio University, where he was the defensive coordinator. VCR & VIDEO RENTALS Hollman, beginning his fifth year, has the Scot program back in the national spotlight. At Edinboro, he has earned 29 wins against just 14 losses and one tie and owns an impressive 18-5-1 slate against the PSAC Western Division. In 1989, he was named the top coach in the East Region by the National Football Coaches Association and also tabbed the top coach in the PSAC West. In 1990, he guided the Scots to their first-ever NCAA II playoff win as Edinboro routed Virginia Union and advanced to the national quarterfinals. "Edinboro has been a great experience, and I like the direction of the pro gram," Hollman said. Tom Hollman "As a coach, I have been fortunate to coach at many different levels, from high school to Division I. The Division II level here at Edinboro is very appeal ing to me in relation to my career goals. It is a great feeling to be a head coach at this level." / Hollman's educational background begins with a high school diploma from Memorial High School in St. Mary's, Ohio, followed by his undergraduate degree in education from Ohio Northern University in 1968. Three years later Hollman received his master of science degree in education from Xavier Uni versity in Cincinnati, Ohio. While at Ohio Northern, Hollman was a three-year starter for the football team and a two-way performer as a defensive back and offensive end during his junior and senior years. He holds the school record with 13 career intercep tions and earned All-American and All-District honors during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Hollman also lettered in baseball for three years during his stay at Ohio Northern. "Edinboro has been a great experience, and I like the direction of the program." A chronological look at Hollman’s coaching career begins in 1968 as an assistant coach at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio. From there, Hollman moved on to Greenville High School in Ohio where he became head coach from 1971-73. His Greenville squads posted an impressive^ 26-2-2 mark during his three-year stay. * Hollman then moved on to Fremont Ross High School as head coach for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, where his squad recorded 15 wins against three setbacks and two ties. Fremont was the Buckeye Conference champ in ’74, unbeaten at 90-1. Tapes GIANT EAGLE FULL SERVICE SUPERMARKET $1.49+tax Per Day Free Membership A lot yoxjL can feel good about. In 1981, Hollman took an assistant coaching spot with Ball State University which he held through the ’84 campaign. Then, beginning in 1985 Hollman held the defensive coordinator position at Ohio University. "It has been a very comfortable transition for me," Hollman added. "I have found the community to be supportive and the administration is giving me every opportunity to be successful here at Edinboro," he concluded. The 10,000 ft. expansion is here!! Tom resides in Edinboro with his wife, Kandi, and four children, Mari, Jon, Hm and Denise. 14 Benefits Senior Citizens 15 The Hollman Era 1988-1992 Purveyors of Fine Food and Spirits "I still feel one of the most important things about football on the Division II level is to make it fun for the players involved ... Jay Sports Information and Promotions Director When the PSAC men's basketball coaches vote in the pre-season for the western division favorite for 1992-93, look for the Fighting Scots to be selected near the top. In three seasons directing the pro gram, head coach Greg Walcavich has led the Scots to 60 wins in 84 games includ ing a conference runner up finish last sea son. A 20-9 slate in 1991-92 was good enough for a berth in the state champi onship game but once again, the Scots fell short of their ultimate goal - a trip to the NCAA II national championship tourna ment. After beginning 1992-93 with a pre season slate of games against NCAA Division I Alaska-Anchorage and AlaskaFairbanks on the road, the Scots face a non-conference schedule which includes backyard rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst and PSAC Eastern Division perennial powers Cheyney and Millersville. Wal cavich feels it will all benefit the Scots in the conference stretch run. But the good news for the four-year coach is the return of his most experi enced group since taking over in 1989-90. Leading the charge will be the team's leading scorer of a year ago, Adam Cheek. The 6-2 shooting guard netted an Edinboro single season record 594 points last year and averaged 20.5 points per game - all when he averaged just 27 min utes of play. Fox earned the starting point guard spot a year ago at Christmas and the Scots proceeded to win over 85% of their games the rest of the way. He finished the year with 103 assists. Dickerson and Simpson occupied the middle last season and averaged 3.0 and 7.0 ppg respectively. Both are solid rebounders while Simpson is the defen sive force at center, leading the squad with 49 blocked shots a year ago. Crider, who averaged just over three points per game, appears to be fully recovered from knee surgery and will press both centers for playing time. Santi ago will spell Fox at the point while Zolli coffer will look to improve on his 6.5 ppg mark a year ago. A clutch performer, Zol licoffer drilled a game winning three point basket in the PSAC semi-finals against East Stroudsburg last season. Leroy Bobo, a 6-4 forward from Jor dan Community College in Michigan, will look to fill the void left by Aaron Brown. Bobo netted 17.6 points and 8.1 rebounds a year ago. New Look Lady Scots for 1992-93 Replacing first-team Kodak AllAmerican Tammy Walker, Edinboro's first ever, is literally impossible, so Lady Scot head coach Stan Swank does not want to talk about 'that' anymore. His sights are on a "new-look" squad with a mesh of some familiar faces and plenty of new. The Lady Scots return six players from a team that finished 22-8 and quali fied for the NCAA II national tourna ment. Edinboro has claimed one PSAC crown under Swank and twice has fin ished runner up. Leading the list of returnees will be PSAC West 1st team choice Jeannine Jean Pierre. The senior from the Virgin Islands averaged 20 points per game last year, playing an average of over 35 minutes. Her 581 points were the third most in Lady Scot history. Also returning to the fold will be guards Andrea Williams, Pam Artman and Shelby Hodge and forwards Terri Ayers and Cathlene Criss. 33 Williams proved her ability to score with 31 points in the season finale and finished the year with 320 points and 111 assists. Artman was also solid, dishing off 85 assists and scoring 5.3 points per game, while Hodge connected on nearly 30% of her three point tries last season. Ayers will be the Lady Scots' inside force, coming off a year where she grabbed 247 rebounds. Just a junior, Ayers now stands as Edinboro's 15th alltime rebounder with 424. Criss played in 20 games last season and will look to improved playing time this season. Swank boasts some top recruits for the upcoming season including Diana Holder, Lori Montgomery and Shauna Nevel, the most valuable player in the 5th Annual North Coast All-Star Classic in the Cleveland, Ohio, area last year. Wrestlers Eye Division I Top 20 After finishing 25th at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships last season and in the top 30 the past two years, the 1992-93 Fighting Scots and head coach Bruce Baumgartner will eye the nation's elite and a ranking in the top 20 at season's end. Under the watchful eye of the Olympic champion, the Scots have made a steady progression back to the nation's top 10 - a position they secured in their first three seasons of Division I wrestling from 1987-89. The Scots return a pair of All-Americans in 118-pounder Lew Rosselli and Tom Shifflet at 142. Rosselli has emerged in the national spotlight as one of the favorites for the NCAA Division I national title. After placing 4th in the 1992 Olympic Trials, Rosselli has gained the experience to gear up for his title run in March. A 4th place finisher in 1990-91, Rosselli redshirted last season and enters the season with 96 career wins against just 23 losses and 4 ties. Shifflet earned All-American honors last year as a freshman, finishing 7th at the Division I championships. He was voted PSAC and Eastern Wrestling League Rookie of the Year for his 32 wins against just 13 losses and 1 tie. HAMILTON INSURANCE AGENCY Good Luck Scots Georgiann M. Pete Zapadka Wins PSAC Media Award Pete Zapadka, former sports reporter at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, is the winner of the fourth annua! Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Media Award. He left his position in the sports depart ment in May after nearly 11 years to accept a position as an executive producer with the Post-Gazette Radio Network. The award is given by the sports information directors of the PSAC to a media member who has supported and promoted conference athletics. Zapadka is the second Pittsburgh media person to receive the award. Ray KienzI, sportswriter for the Pittsburgh Press, was the first recipient of the award in 1989. Ross Nevel of the Lock Haven Express and former sports information director at Lock Haven University, was the 1990 honoree and Skip Mutter of the Patriot News in Harrisburg was the award winner last year. Zapadka is being recognized for his dedication to excellence in sports reporting and for the many contributions he has made to the PSAC over the years. He is known for his honesty, integrity, diligence and hard work. In addition to his outstanding efforts to get coverage in the paper for PSAC Pete Zapadka athletes from the greater Pittsburgh area, Zapadka has been a valuable friend and confidant to the sports information directors throughout the PSAC, not only those in the Western Division. Through his job on the sports staff, he would regularly fight for listings including Great Minds. Great Places. standings, schedules, results, etc. of PSAC schools in the Post-Gazette. He also was actively involved in the sports department of the P-G zone editions and used informa tion on all sports, not only the traditional sports of major media interest. A strong booster of coverage for all NCAA Division II and III schools plus NAIA institutions, Zapadka was an initial supporter of the idea of PSAC press conferences for football and basketball when those events were in the formative stages. In addition to sports, Zapadka’s hobby is astronomy and he has written feature articles for the Post-Gazette’s Science page on that topic. He is the membership secretary for the Amateur Astronorhy Asso ciation of Pittsburgh. A native of Ellwood City, Pa. he earned a Journalism degree from l^oint Park College in Pittsburgh in 1975, and went to work full-time at the Post-Gazette in January of 1976. He moved to the sports department in August, 1981. Zapadka and his wife, Lynne, live in Pittsburgh with their two daughters, Allison, 7, and Jessica, 3V2. Lynne works as an account representative in retail advertising for the Pittsburgh Press. What makes the 14 universities in the State System so great? Education leading to opportunities.
