The game is sponsored by McDonald's. Today will mark the Boro's fourth home game in six starts. The Records Edinboro enters the PSAC West clash unbeaten in five games while Shippens burg is 2-4. The Scots are 2-0 in western division play while the Raiders are 0-2. The Scots have opened the season with consecutive wins over Buffalo (3513), Northwood (37-13), Southern Con necticut (41-0), Clarion (26-17) and Lock Haven (38-10). Edinboro has trailed only in the Clarion contest but responded with 19 fourth quarter points to seal the win. The Scots exploded for 18 in the final stanza at Lock Haven last weekend. Edin boro continues to be tough at home under coach Tom Hollman winning 22 games in 25 tries (22-2-1) since 1988. Shippensburg started with wins over Shepherd (21-7) and Bloomsburg (20-14) but have recently dropped to Kutztown (3-16), Millersville (10-35), Slippery Rock (3-20) and #2 lUP (16-35). The Series The Scots have won eight of the last ten games but trail 13-17-1 in the series dating back to 1957. The Raiders drilled the Boro 45-7 last year in Shippensburg. The most memorable game of the series was in 1986 when the Scots won a 66-53 decision at Sox Harrison Stadium. The two most recent affairs in Edinboro have been much different with the Scots win ning 19-10 in 1988 and 10-3 in 1990. The Coaches Hollman is 34-14-1 (.701) directing the Scots including 20 wins in 26 tries (205-1, .784%) in the rugged PSAC Western Division. The Scots have earned two trips to the NCAA II playoffs under Hollman including a share of the PSAC crown in 1989. His nine-year collegiate head coach ing mark of 58-25-2 (.690) includes four years at the College of Wooster (Ohio). The Red Raiders are led by third-year coach Rocky Rees (17-13) who led Ship pensburg to a 10-3 slate and a trip to the NCAA II playoffs in 1991. Shippensburg advanced past East Stroudsburg in the final round of the playoffs before bowing to lUP. 2 Inside the Numbers (per game averages) Edinboro Shippensburg Scoring Total Offense Rushing Offense Passing Offense 35.4 PPG 435.8 YPG 265.6 YPG 170.2 YPG 12.2 PPG 301.5 YPG 87.7 YPG 213.8 YPG Scoring Etefense Total Defense Rushing Defense Passing Ifefense 10.6 PPG 232.8 YPG 88.8 YPG 144.0 YPG 21.2 PPG 342.7 YPG 96.3 YPG 246.4 YPG The Offenses The Defenses The Scots continue to rely on the ground attack but will be tested against the stingy Raiders. Larry Jackson (94 att., 687 yds, 11 tds, 7.3 ypc) leads the PSAC in the rushing but is nursing a pulled quad muscle and is questionable for this week. Derrick Russell (54, 249, 4 tds) is an able backup. Injuries have hampered the fullback spot for the Scots as Tom Tedder (11,38, 2 tds) is expected to miss his second straight game. Chris Snyder (11, 72) and William Mills (10, 41) will share time replacing Tedder. Up front, look for tack les Mike Kegarise and Tony Tighe, guards Chad Wallick and Scott Nickel and center Gordy Hitchcock to clear the way. Guard Bill Sparenberg has shared starting time with Wallick this season and will also see action. Sophomore quarterback Jody Dickerson (49-93, 777 yds., 5 tds) continues to improve as he gets his 17th consecutive start under center. He can also rush the ball (32, 109, 1 TD). Primary targets are Wrentie Martin (27 recp., 484 yds, 2 tds), Dave Ashton (8,114, 1 TD), Paul Stone (6, 54, 1 td) and Brian Heebsh (6, 123, 1 td). Martin averages nearly 97 yards per game receiving and nets 17.9 ypc. Shippensburg goes to quarterback Brian Gilbert (103, 208, 1,283 yds, 3 tds) for the big play. The junior signal caller has tossed 11 interceptions this season but none in the loss to lUP. Top receivers include Ed Minogue (27, 433, 3 tds), Leon Davis (20, 281) and Tom Coleman (17, 182). The Red Raider running attack is very young with three "true-freshmen" scheduled to start today. Seth Holderman (25, 159) sat out the Indiana game but is expected back. Other starters are Shawn Brown (24, 49) and Brian Gallagher (16, 77). Backup fullback Ed Madden (13, 38) leads the squad with two rushing touch downs. 3 The Scots adjusted to the Lock Haven aerial show but Gilbert will be a more polished test for the Boro secondary. Linebacker Jason Perkins (55 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 others for loss, 4 fumbles caused) continues to play at All-Ameri can levels and will get help from linebackers Michael Sims (30, 8 pass deflections) and Michael Edwards (22). Up front, ends Anthony Ross (36, 6 sacks, 6 for loss, 1 recovery) and Devas Sim mons (28, 3 sacks, 6 for loss) and tackles Russell Cray (33, 3 sacks, 5 for loss) and Rob Harmer (17) have been the difference in the Boro's nationally ranked defense. Otha Davidson (7, 1 sack, 3 for loss) is also likely to get more time. The secondary is secured by corners Mario Houston (18, 3 blocked punts) and All-American Georj Lewis (17, 1 int) and safeties Mike Barnes (27, 1 int) and Steve Russell (13). Shippensburg features a trio of AllConference players in linebacker Shayne Mains (104, 2 sacks, 7 for loss) and tackles Mark Maciejewski (39, 3 sacks) and Robert Davis (57, 6 for loss). Linebacker Mike Stofflet (60) is second to Mains in tackles. The pass defense is secured by corner Doug Seidenstricker (42) who leads the team with two interceptions. Special Teams/Kicking Came The Scots have been solid with PK Scott Rupert (3, 7 fg, 20-23 pat) and punter Gary Lhotsky (22, 41.3 ypp). Lhotsky had a banner day in Lock Haven averaging over 44 yards per punt with a long of 50. Shippensburg features PK Joel Yohn (6-8 fg, 7-8 pat) and punter Paul Dormer (23,37.3 ypp). McDonald Edinboro University's athletic program was placed under the talented and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald in July of 1981. Increased emphasis on fund raising to provide a sound scholarship foundation has become his top priority while numerous changes and innovations have also keyed the Scots' athletic program under his direction. Through his efforts more than $4 million has been raised during the past eleven years. The funds generated by the energetic athletic director's efforts will be used to assist Edinboro's men and women athletes who compete in the Scots sixteen intercollegiate sports. In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected winning tradition in intercollegiate athletics, the former health and physical education professor has vastly expanded the University's summer activities. Sixty camps were sponsored by the Fighting Scots Booster Club this past summer on the University's campus. Sox Harrison Stadium was the site for the Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers first scrimmage, an event the veteran ath letic director hopes to bring back to the area each year. The first 500 fans attending today’s game received a coupon for a free McDonald's® Can Cooler The personable athletic director also introduced Edinboro's Hall of Fame program which has evolved into an annual year-ending event to honor present and past athletes. McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12 years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span, his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Confer ence crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that netted trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams set 27 University records and made 19 post-season appearances while four of his players were named All-Americans. Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald served as assis tant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956 graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia. In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also holds a master's degree in health from the University of Buffalo. As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPI basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the sec ond leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led his team to the national basketball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Toumament Team in 1959 and 1960. In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the Year by the eastern seaboard coaches and that same year was honored as one of the top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll. McDonald's honors also include selection to the West Virginia All-Time College Basketball Team and member ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. But when expectations were to advance to the NCAA II playoffs for the third consecutive year, the 1991 won-lost mark was not what the Scots had envisioned. Anticipating that the 1992 pre-season polls will have Edinboro back in the national picture. Football Gazette will rank the Scots number eight. It appears the pressure will be on once again. Expecta tions yes, but the Fighting Scots' recent success has created them. The Hollman Era of 1988-92 has Edinboro posting a 29-14-1 slate, includ ing 18 of 24 wins in the rugged Pennsyl vania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Two trips to the national play offs, co-championship of the PSAC, forty school records, two Division II Player of the Year finalists and 17 All-Americans are among the accomplishments. All in the last four years. Tom Hollman begins his fifth season with the Scots and boasts a 53-25-2 record in eight years on the Division II level. His winning percentage of .663 is among the nation's best in small-college football. Edinboro returns 33 lettermen and 17 starters (including specialties) in 1992 and should once again battle for the PSAC West title. Home encounters include the University of Buffalo and Northwood (MI), as well as PSAC western division rivals Clarion (Homecoming), Slippery Rock and Shippensburg. The Scots travel to Southern Con necticut, Lock Haven, California, lUP and Millersville with hopes of extending their season beyond November 14. In 1991, Edinboro played five of their first seven games on the road, and ulti mately it cost them a trip to the national playoffs. This season shows more of a balance, with the Plaid hosting three of the first four games at Sox Harrison Sta dium. With a 19-2-1 home record under Hollman, look for the Scots to come out of the blocks quickly in '92. A LOOK AT THE SCOTS 290 Plum Street Edinboro, PA Phone 734-4600 HOURS Sunday thru Thursday 6:00 a.m. - Midnight Friday & Saturday OPEN 24 HOURS 10 Skill Positions PSAC West Rookie of the Year Jody Dickerson returns at quarterback with veteran Sean Seibert ready to step in if needed. Dickerson connected on 53 per cent of his passes last year, covering 1,382 yards and eight scores, while rushing for another 240 yards and three touchdowns. Seibert can still lay claim to Edinboro's lone NCAA II playoff win when he engi neered a convincing 38-14 margin at Vir ginia Union in 1990. A veteran crew of receivers returns, led by Wrentie Martin (39-607-3 TDs), Paul Stone (9-117) and tight end Brian Heebsh (13-162-2 TDs). Martin and Heebsh were PSAC West second team selec tions in '91 and all three bring a wealth of game experience to the offense. The running back position is solid with Derrick Russell (68-403-3 TDs), Larry Jackson (29-188-2 TDs), Corey Hill and Vidal Farr. Someone will have to carry the bulk with the departure of AllAmerican Lester Frye. Three-year starter Tom Tedder (41-173-1 TD) returns at full back and could be the PSAC West's best at this spot. Tedder will get plenty of backup support from sophomore Chris Snyder. Offensive Line With the graduation of All-American Curtis Rose and All-PSAC pick Wally Spisak, the Scots must fill two rather large pairs of shoes. PSAC West second team choice Mike Kegarise has pro potential with his 6-7, 300 pound frame. Starters Scott Nickel, Tony Tighe and Gordy Hitchcock also return, as will Chad Wallick, Det Betti and Dave Nowacki. Quality depth is key, so Hollman will most likely call on a pair of top recruits to help anchor the offensive front. Defensive Line Gone is All-American tackle John Messura, so the interior will highlight some new faces. Experience does return in Otha Davidson (22 tackles) and Russell Cray (42) while LB Devas Simmons (36) is likely to convert to a down lineman spot. End Anthony Mariani (48 tackles, 8 for loss) also returns and had a solid '91 in his initial year. Messura's spot must be filled if the Scots are to improve on their 150-yard per game rushing yield of last year. Linebackers All-American and All-PSAC West choice Jason Perkins (135 tackles) returns to solidify a very good corps of lineback ers. Perkins was sensational in'91, picking off two passes, recording nine tackles for 11 losses and adding four sacks to his team high tackle mark. Perkins has been cho sen as a 1992 pre-season first team AllAmerican by the Sporting News. Returning sophomore Steve Russell will give help after recording 41 tackles in '91 and tying Perkins for the team lead in interceptions with two. Veteran Steve Nagy and newcomer Mike Edwards both looked good in spring workouts and will make heavy contributions. Simmons can play both the down position and linebacker and should be an impact player in 1992. Secondary With the return of All-American Georj Lewis and PSAC West second team pick Mike Barnes, the Scots' defensive backfield returns plenty of experience. 1990 PSAC West Rookie of the Year Mario Houston will be at the other corner spot. Houston was in on 75 stops last year and led the team with 12 pass deflections. Lewis was a third team choice by Football Gazette last year and has started 34 consecutive games at the corner. His 50 tackles also earned him a first-team spot on the PSAC West All-Star squad. Barnes, a free safety/linebacker with outstanding speed and toughness, was third on the squad in '91 with 83 tackles. Only linebackers Perkins and Joel Marratta (88) were in on more tackles than Barnes. Backup quarterback Sean Seibert has the inside track at the vacant free safety spot, vacated by four-year starter Wade Smith. Mike White and a host of top cal iber freshmen give Edinboro a great sec ondary in 1992. Specialties A pair of starters return in punter Gary Lhotsky and place-kicker Scott Rupert. Lhotsky earned second team PSAC West honors a year ago with his 38.1 yards per punt. His average was sec ond best in the division and fifth overall in the state. Lhotsky has averaged just under 37 ypp over his two-year career. Rupert, just a sophomore, had a solid freshman year in '91, finishing second on the team with 36 points. He was true on 5-of-7 field goal tries and converted 21 extra point attempts. A great all-around athlete, Rupert led the Scot baseball team last spring with a .398 batting average. Hollman came to Edin boro from Ohio University, where he was the defensive coordinator. Tapes Hollman, beginning his fifth year, has the Scot program back in the national spotlight. At Edinboro, he has earned 29 wins against just 14 losses and one tie and owns an impressive 18-5-1 slate against the PSAC Western Division. In 1989, he was named the top coach in the East Region by the National Football Coaches Association and also tabbed the top coach in the PSAC West. In 1990, he guided the Scots to their first-ever NCAA II playoff win as Edinboro routed Virginia Union and advanced to the national quarterfinals. "Edinboro has been a great experience, and I like the direction of the pro gram," Hollman said. "As a coach, I have been fortunate to coach at many different levels, from high school to Division I. The Division II level here at Edinboro is ve^ appeal ing to me in relation to my career goals. It is a great feeling to be a head coach at this level." Tom Hollman "Edinboro has been a great experience, and I like the direction of the program." GIANT EAGLE Hollman's educational background begins with a high school diploma from Memorial High School in St. Mary's, Ohio, followed by his undergraduate degree in education from Ohio Northern University in 1968. Three years later Hollman received his master of science degree in education from Xavier Uni versity in Cincinnati, Ohio. FULL SERVICE SUPERMARKET While at Ohio Northern, Hollman was a three-year starter for the football team and a two-way performer as a defensive back and offensive end during his junior and senior years. He holds the school record with 13 career intercep tions and earned All-American and All-District honors during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Hollman also lettered in baseball for three years during his stay at Ohio Northern. Groceries A chronological look at Hollman's coaching career begins in 1968 as an assistant coach at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio. From there, Hollman moved on to Greenville High School in Ohio where he ^became head coach from 1971-73. His Greenville squads posted an impress!yb 26-2-2 mark during his three-year stay. Hollman then moved on to Fremont Ross High School as head coach for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, where his squad recorded 15 wins against three setbacks and two ties. Rolling Scots vs. Fighting Scots - October 29 Great Minds. Great Places. Thursday is sports day! At 3:30 p.m. the Edinboro Rolling Scots football team will take on the Edinboro Fighting Scots football team in a wheelchair football game at Crawford Gymnasium. Wheelchair football is an action packed sport which promises to be fun for all who attend. Thursday evening will feature a lecture by Mr. Todd Bit tner, an athlete with a disability who has competed with able bodied athletes since he was eight years old. His lec ture will begin at 7:30 in Butterfield 137. The Organization for Disability Awareness and the Office of Disabled Student Services are sponsoring Ability Awareness Week from October 26 through October 30. This year's events intend to promote an awareness of the many abilities of persons who have disabilities. On Tuesday, October 27, a group of U.S., state and local government officials will participate in a wheelchair tour of the Edinboro campus. Participants and campus officials who participate in this tour will be our guests at a wheelchair luncheon. After lunch, we will conduct a round table discussion with select members of the admin istration and student body which highlights the observa tions of the tour members. Throughout the week there will be display tables set up in the University Center to help promote awareness of achievements of students with disabilities. Of special interest will be the display and practical demonstration of computer equipment Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the University Center lounge. Wednesday, October 28 will feature a seminar on Job Readiness conducted by Mr. James Prentice. Mr. Prentice now works at the Westinghouse Energy Center in Pitts burgh. It is interesting to note that he has a severe speech problem and must communicate through a sp>eech synthe sis device. What makes the 14 universities in the State System so great?
