Edixboro Tniversity Athletic Fmo Drive Free Enlargements Dear Friends of the Fighting Scots: Having accepted the challenge of leading Edinboro University’s athletic department into the 21st century, I am excited about spearheading this annual athletic fund drive for the direct benefit of our studentathletes. With the growing cost of education, the importance of private funding for our athletic program is vital to the continued success we have all enjoyed here at Edinboro University. With no state appropriation for athletic scholarships, we depend on labor-intensive fundraising events, as well as the generous support of our alumni and friends, to supplement our scholarship fund. The efforts of our University employees during our summer camp season continue to be the major source of our financial development. Although the University has enjoyed athletic success in the 1990s, our sports teams continue to be funded well below the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allowable limit. Overall, it is the goal of Edinboro University to give the best quality education and athletic experience possible to our student-athletes. We not only want our students to have the opportunity to compete, but to be the very best they can be. At Edinboro University, we will do everything possible to generate the resources necessary to stay competitive, but we need your ongoing support to continue to improve upon our rich athletic tradition. We are excited about hearing from you soon, as you join us on our mission to provide a quality athletic program for the entire Edinboro family. Providing support to Edinboro University’s athletic program is the Fighting Scot Booster Club. Organized in the early 1980’s, it was formed around a core of devoted, loyal alumni, friends and representatives of Edinboro University. It is an advisory group dedicated to the support and advancement of Fighting Scot athletics. The club is the vehicle by which individuals, businesses, and corporations may make contributions to the overall athletic program or designate a portion to a specific sport. The club’s primary mission is to provide financial support for the athletic teams while promoting community awareness and involvement in the entire program. Its objective of providing athletic scholarships in support of studentathletes and their goals, parallels the department’s mission of furthering community awareness of all athletic teams, as well as rallying support around University advocates. Why Support the Booster ClUR? Your generous membership affords Edinboro University the opportunity to offer a higher quality athletic and academic experience to its student-athletes. State monies are not available for athletic scholarships, making the Booster Club and the department’s fundraising efforts the sole means of raising money for yearly scholarships and endowments. With your assistance, continuing our winning tradition - as well as assisting in the development of our student-athletes as leaders of tomorrow - will be a reality! Four Fighting Scots are currently playing in the professional ranks, including three members of Edinboro’s 1996 team. Denorse Mosely was activated by the Miami Dolphins for last year’s post-season action while three-time All-American offensive lineman Jeremy O’Day and former teammate Jeff Traversy, a defensive tackle, made the move from collegiate ball to the professional ranks of the Canadian Football League. Cleveland Pratt, who finished his career at Edinboro in 1990, has enjoyed several successful seasons in the Arena Football League. Mosely spent the majority of last season on the Dolphins practice squad before being signed to help bolster the secondary Former Edinboro tackle Jeff Traversy (94) lays a for the playoffs. At Edinboro, Mosely used his speed to make a heavy hit on Saskatchewan’s quarterback'. name for himself on special teams, returning kick-offs for touchdowns in consecutive games. He also saw action at receiver, catching a 91-yard pass for a touchdown against Cal. O’Day enters his second season with the two-time defending Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts. The 6-3, 295pound offensive lineman was chosen by the Argos in the 1997 supplemental draft. O'Day’s versatility earned him a back-up role at offensive guard and tackle early in his rookie season, but solid fundamentals won him a starting spot as the season progressed. Eventually, O’Day also saw time at tight end where he caught two passes, one a 2-yard TD pass from Doug Flutie. Traversy was the third pick (15th overall) of the Calgary Stampeders in the 1997 college draft. The 6-5, 280-pound nose tackle’s pass rush abilities helped him secure a starting role early in his rookie season and he currently is playing a reserve role at defensive tackle. O’Day and Traversy both credit the Edinboro coaching staff as the key to their professional success. “Coach (Scott) Browning taught me exactly what I needed to know to have a chance to play pro ball,” said O’Day. “When I arrived at camp, I was amazed at how well my techniques and training stacked up against veterans. I certainly appreciate his guidance and hope people understand what a great coach he is.” Traversy agreed. “Coach Hollman and Coach Cronk are two of the most knowledgable men that I’ve ever been around in football,” he said. “They pushed me ^o the limits and I’m glad they did, because now I’m living a dro6m and I owe much of my success to them and the Edinboro football program.” Once called “the best kept secret in the league,” Pratt has made a name for himself with the Florida Bobcats and the AFL. The 5-7, 171-pound offensive specialist was acquired by the Bobcats in February of 1995, and plays wide receiver and return specialist. Pratt has scored six touchdowns thus far this season and averages 15.6 yards per catch (312 yards) and leads the team with 20 kick returns for 288 yards. Pratt has also seen time in Denorse Mosely the backfield where he is averaging 3.3 yards per carry. was activated by Wide receiver/kick returner Gilbert Grantlin, who played for the Miami Edinboro during the 1995 season, signed a free-agent contract Dolphins for the with the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings in April 1998 playoff run. 1996 and was a member of the team’s practice squad. The 6-1, 182-pound Grantlin played only one season at Edinboro, but made a significant impact with his big-play ability. The Florida native, an honorable-mention All-American, caught 44 passes for 840 yards (19.1 yards per catch) and eight touchdowns. Grantlin also had 372 yards on 17 kickoff returns (21.8 yard average) and 300 yards on 28 punt returns 12 Scots in tre Pros Before Grantlin, Mike Kegarise was the last Fighting Scot to play in the NFL. The 6-6, 310-pound offensive tackle, a two-time All-American, signed a free-agent deal with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks after concluding his Edinboro career in 1993. Kegarise spent the 1994 season on the Seahawks’ injuredreserve list with a severe knee injury, but was released the following season when Seattle changed head coaches. Two other former Scots who played under current head coach Tom Hollman also signed free-agent contracts with NFL teams. Offensive guard Curtis Rose signed with the Miami Dolphins, while wide receiver Ernest Priester inked a deal with the Denver Broncos. Neither Rose nor Priester played a regularseason game in the NFL, although Cleveland native Priester later played for the Cleveland Thunder of the Arena Football League. Rose and Priester both were two-time All-Americans at Edinboro. The 6-3, 280-pound Rose earned the honors in 1990 and 1991, while the 5-9, 170-pound Priester did so in 1989 and 1990. He ranks fifth on the school’s all-time rushing list with 1,978 career yards in 19 games (104 yards per contest). Romaniszyn played at Edinboro from 1970-72, earning All-American honors. The 6-2, 225-pound Titusville native was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1973 as a running back, but was switched to outside linebacker. A versatile performer, Romaniszyn is the only Edinboro player to finish his career with 1,000-plus yards rushing (1,266) and 1,000plus yards receiving (1,088). Hollman joined the Edinboro staff in January of 1988 as the program’s 11th head coach after serving as the defensive coordinator at Ohio University for three years. Edinboro went 4-0-1 during the final five games of his first season, then in 1989, captured the PSAC West title with a 6-0 record and roared into the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in school history. The Scots lost a thrilling 45-32 decision at perennial Division II power North Dakot§i State University, but the EU program had clearly arrivfed as a force in Division II football. Hollman was honored as the top coach in the East Region by the American Football Coaches Association and he also was selected PSAC West “Coach of the Year.” In 1990, Hollman guided the Fighting Scots to their first-ever NCAA II playoff win as Edinboro beat Virginia Union, 38-14, on the road, to advance to the national quarterfinals. The Scots then dropped a tough 14-7 contest to PSAC rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Scots returned to the NCAA playoffs in 1992 and 1993 after runner-up finishes in the PSAC West. In addition to team success, Hollman has coached 53 All-Americans at Edinboro, including Elbert Cole and Ernest Priester, who both placed in the top three in the voting for the Harlon Hill Award presented to the NCAA Division II Player of the Year. He also has coached players who have set school records for rushing, passing, receiving, quarterback sacks, and interceptions. Head Coach Tom Hollman Hollman is a 1968 graduate of Ohio Northern University, where he was a three-year starter for the football team and a two-way performer as a defensive back and end on offense. He holds the school record with 13 career interceptions and earned All-American and All-District honors during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Hollman also lettered in baseball for three years. With the growing cost of education, the importance of private funding for our ath letic program is vital to the continued success we have all enjoyed here at Edinboro University. With no state appropriation for athletic scholarships, we depend on labor-intensive fundraising events, as well as the generous support of our alumni and friends, to supplement our schol arship fund. The efforts of our University employees during our summer camp season continue to be the major source of our financial development. Although the University has enjoyed athletic success in the 1990s, our sports teams continue to be funded well below the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allowable limit. Overall, it is the goal of Edinboro University to give the best quality educa tion and athletic experience possible to our studentathletes. We not only want our students to have the opportunity to compete, but to be the very best they can be. At Edinboro University, we will do everything pos sible to generate the resources necessary to stay competitive, but we need your ongoing support to continue to improve upon our rich athletic tradition. We are excited about hearing from you soon, as you join us on our mission to provide a quality ath letic program for the entire Edinboro family. Sincerely, Bruce R. What is the Fightimg Scot Booster Club? Providing support to Edinboro University’s athletic program is the Fighting Scot Booster Club. Organized in the early 1980’s, it was formed around a core of devoted, loyal alum ni, friends and representatives of Edinboro University. It is an advisory group ded icated to the support and advancement of Fighting Scot athletics. The club is the vehicle by which individuals, businesses, and corporations may make contribu tions to the overall athletic program or designate a portion to a specific sport. The club’s primary mission is to provide financial support for the athletic teams while promoting community awareness and involvement in the entire program. Its objective of providing athletic scholarships in support of student-athletes and their goals, parallels the department’s mission of furthering community awareness of all athletic teams, as well as rallying support around University advocates. Why Support the BoOS'TER Club? Your generous membership affords Edinboro University the opportunity to offer a higher quality athletic and academic experience to its student-athletes. State monies are not available for athletic scholarships, making the Booster Club and the department’s fundraising efforts the sole means of raising money for yearly scholarships and endowments. With your assistance, continuing our winning tradition - as well as assisting in the development of our student-athletes as leaders of ^morrow - will be a reality' Thomas Jambro Diane Jamison Todd & Sarah Jay Raymond Jeglinski Naomi Johnson & Earl Jacobs Angela & Danny Jones Henry Katzwinkel Pat Kennedy Robert Kern Dr. & Mrs. Mo Kian David Korenich Daniel Kysor Tom Lane Richard & Gretchen Lang Robert J. Pe^sylvama State Athletic Conference The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) has established itself as one of the premier NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation. Founded in 1951 for the purpose of promoting and administering the athletic programs at the 14 state teachers' colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the PSAC is divided into seven-team Divisions. The PSAC crowns Divisional Champions in football, but the “State Game” between the top team in the East and West was eliminated after the 1987 contest. The PSAC is well-represented each year in the NCAA Division II national polls and post-season Football Championship. The PSAC has had at least two teams compete in the NCAA Division II playoffs every year from 1988-96 and a national semifinalist in three of the past five seasons. Since 1990, PSAC teams have participated in a total of 27 NCAA Division II playoff games, highlighted by two national championship game appearances by Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1990 and 1993. From its inception in 1951, each conference member selected its own competitive division within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In 1980, however, the presidents of each school, who make up the league's Board of Directors, voted to reclassify to NCAA Division II membership. Nine schools also elect to participate at the NCAA Division I level in select sports. In 1983, all member institutions were granted University status and the State System of Higher Education (SSHE) was formed. The system currently has an enrollment in excess of 99,000 students with an alumni base of 402,000 including 287,000 who reside in the state. The Chancellor of the SSHE is Dr. James H. McCormick. The PSAC sponsors championships in 20 men's and women's sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. One of the largest NCAA Division M conferences in the nation, the league employs a full-time commissioner and an information director. Steve Murray will serve as Commissioner for the conference after serving as the interim commissioner last year. Office, 814/732-2776 x234 Fane Edinboro University of Pennsylvania took a historic step in its athletic program 16 years ago with the induction of 18 individuals into its newly created Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1982, the university honored 18 charter members who had distinguished themselves through their associations with athletics at Edinboro University, either by virtue of their performances, or by their meritorious efforts on behalf of the university’s athletic program. More than 100 former Edinboro University student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters of the athletic program have since been awarded this honor. The Fighting Scot athletic department takes special pride each April by honoring new members with their induction into the Hall of Fame. Each inductee or representative is presented a plaque, which identifies his or her service to the university. A duplicate plaque is placed in the Athletic Hall of Fame trophy case located in the lobby of McComb Fieldhouse. Additionally, Edinboro University also honors its annual Outstanding Athletic Contributor, Coach of the Year and top senior athletes at the Hall of Fame Banquet. Student athletes are also awarded varsity letters at the banquet. To nominate an individual for induction to the Hall of Fame, contact the Sports Information Office, at (814) 7322776 extension 234. 1995 (9-2) Coach: Tom Hollman EUP .............................0pp. *21 Hillsdale................. 14 7 Appalachian St... 44 26 Portland State........7 *52 Lock Haven.......... 12 40 Shippensburg.........7 *31 California................. 7 22 Slippery Rock...... 13 *35 Indiana.................. 18 *42 Mansfield /............. 0 28 Clarion ..................... 6 NCAA Division II Playoffs: 12 New Haven...........27 316 155 1996 (6-4) Coach: Tom Hollman EUP .............................0pp. 35 Hillsdale................ 21 12 Carson-Newman. 42 7 Univ. of Buffalo....17 *31 Shippensburg...... 17 14 California............... 13 *28 Slippery Rock...... 35 18 Indiana..................20 *38 Cheyney .............. 6 *48 Clarion................. 35 45 Lock Haven..........17 276 of Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees 223 1982 Charter Members 1985 Inductees 1989 Inductees 1994 Inductees Sox Harrison* Henry Anderson, 1931* Walt Askins, 1960 Lawrence Blaney, 1932* Arnold Bradshaw, 1963 Gary Gilbert, 1961 Curli Halmi * Joseph Leson, 1935* Emil Magdik, 1960 David O’Dessa, 1961 Dan Pretchel, 1965 Fred Riley, 1972 Ted Robison, 1970 Joe Sanford, 1971 Frank Smith, 1969 Frank Soscia, 1942* John B.
