JOSEPH’S(IN) WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN at Fairmont State CONCORD at West Virginia Tech SHEPHERD at West Virginia St. WEST LIBERTY There’s a saying among coaches that teams experience their most improvement from game one to game two. Long-time Edinboro men tor hopes that is indeed the case as his Fighting Scots turned in a disap pointing performance against Hillsdale last Saturday, dropping a 2810 decision in the season opener for both teams. Welcome to another edition of Fighting Scot football, as the Boro tries once again to present Hollman with his 100th career coaching triumph. Today’s opposition is Glenville State. The Pioneers needed overtime to defeat another PSAC West team, California(Pa.), 35-28 on August 28. They were idle last weekend. THECOACHES Edinboro head coach Tom Hollman (Ohio Northern ‘68) is in his 12th season in charge of the Fighting Scots. With a 75-41-2 record at Edinboro, Hollman ranks as the school’s career record holder for most wins. Add in four seasons as the head coach at Wooster, and Hollman is in pursuit of his 100th victory today. He has an overall mark of 99-53-3, ranking 22nd among all active NCAA Division II coaches in winning percentage. Rick Trickett (Glenville State ‘72) returns to his alma mater look ing to continue the Pioneers’ winning tradition. Trickett is a former top assistant at Auburn University. THE EDINBORO-HILIGDAIE SERIES Bienville Stale leans 2-0 Glenville State has captured the previous two meetings against Edinboro, with both contests high-scoring affairs. The Fighting Scots have not dropped their first two con- tests of the season since the 1977 campaign ... highly-touted junior college transfer Bernard Henry did not disappoint. The 6’1”, 210 lb. junior topped the century mark in his first game with the Scots, rushing for 107 yards on 23 carries ... the 28-10 loss to Hillsdale is not indicative of how well the defense played. Despite starting five freshmen, the Boro limited Hillsdale to 209 total yards, and just 73 on the ground in 38 carries. However, the Scots were unable to come up with a turnover... such was not the case for the Boro. Seven times the Scots handed the ball over to the Chargers, including six fumbles, one shy of the school record. In addition, Hillsdale sacked EUP signalcaller Rick Gates six times, and Boro passers completed just 9 of 30 passes. Hillsdale recovered one Edinboro fumble in the end zone, and returned another bobble for six points. All told, Edinboro outgained Hillsdale, 245 yards to 209 ... sophomore Chris Buehner hauled in his first career touchdown pass vs. Hillsdale, a 38-yarder in the first quarter. Buehner caught 3 passes for 44 yards ... to no one’s surprise, Dan Caro paced the Boro “D”. The senior linebacker, a two-time All-PSAC West first team performer, totalled 7 hits ... a pair of redshirt freshmen were next. Chris Wiggins had 6 tackles, while Dave Smith had 6 as well, including a pair of sacks ... freshman Sean McNicholas enjoyed a fine afternoon. After missing a 43-yard field goal, McNicholas con verted a 39-yard boot for his first career three-pointer. In addition, he punted six times for an average of 40.2 yards, including a 45yarder... redshirt freshman Stephana Lubin put up some big num bers returning kicks. He took back three kickoffs for 102 yards, and had two punt returns for 23 yards. the Fighting Scots now run the risk of going 0-2 for the first time since 1977. SORRY ABOUTTHOSEUNIFORMNUMBERS Head coach Tom Hollman had hoped to debut new uniforms in the opener versus Hillsdale, but the new red uniforms have yet to arrive, and Hillsdale did not agree to wear their dark jerseys. Now the Scots run the risk of having the same thing happen against Glenville State. The problem - with several of the old jerseys gone, players were forced to wear different numbers. We’ll try to keep you informed of any number changes, and apologize for any inconvenience this causes. NEXT WEEK The Fighting Scots head to the highway for the first time in 1999, though it’s just a short trip up 1-79. Edinboro and Mercyhurst renew a rivalry which was last played in 1983, with the Lakers host ing the contest at Tullio Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. SCOUTINGTHEPIONEERS Glenville State slumped to 6-5 a year ago after going 9-2 and reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 1997. The Pioneers closed the ‘98 campaign with two losses in their last three games, but opened with a 35-28 overtime triumph against California(Pa.) in the coaching debut of Rick Trickett... freshman Thaddeus Hampton accounted for the winning touchdown against the Vulcans, scoring from 20 yards out. He paced the Pioneers with 55 yards on 15 totes. Jayce Goree, meanwhile, put up some big numbers to earn West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. The senior signalcaller completed 15 of 27 pass es for 264 yards with a pair of TDs, adding 34 yards rushing on 9 carries. A year ago, Goree came in when celebrated quarterback Wilkie Perez went down, and finished the year completing 119 of 197 passes for 1,799 yards with 12 TDs and 3 INTs in just six games ... Goree made good use of Lavoris Adams against Cal. The junior wide receiver hauled in 5 passes for 143 yards, including a 70-yard TD toss. Adams caught 50 balls in ‘98 ... like Edinboro, Glenville State features youth. The Pioneers start five sophomores and a freshman on offense, along with six sophomores and a frosh on defense. California(Pa.) took advantage of the youth on D and a smallish defensive line to gain 425 yards, including 241 yards rushing ... sophomore strong safety Marcus Wade had 11 tackles to lead the way, with junior backer Blake Tasker adding 10 hits ... Glenville State is literally a melting pot. Twelve states, plus the District of Columbia, are represented on the Pioneer roster. In fact, as many players hail from California and Florida (18 total) as West Virginia. The roster also features players from Missouri, Illinois and Georgia. 0-2 HASBEENAWHIIE Thanks to last week’s 28-10 setback to Hillsdale last Saturday, 1080 Utotiat Sent rnnunll EDINBORO STATISTICS Rushing Bernard Henry Chris Morgan Passing Rick Gates Jack Davis Receiving Chris Buehner Scott Harrer Josh Geis Tackles Dan Caro Chris Wiggins Dave Smith Lou Mitchell Yards Att. 23 115 7 34 Att. I am pleased to announce that over 200 new members joined our Edinboro Family to make our initial campaign a success. Entering my second full year as Athleic Director, I wel come the challenge of leading Edinboro University’s athletic program into the new centu ryAs we enter a year of additional challenges for our department and our student-athletes, we are once again reaching out to the entire Edinboro community to help support our athletic program. Our athletic teams are coming off another successful campaign in 1998-99, but we could not have done it without the continuous support of our campus community, alumni and friends. This year, if you desire, you are invited to earmark your contrribution to exiting endow ments here at the University. Once again, with no state appropriations for athleti scholarships, we depend on fund raising events such as the Annual Athletic Fund Drive to supplement our athletic programs. Our summer camp season continues to be the main source of our financial development, but we cannot main tain our level of excellence without your support. Although still funded well below the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allowable limit, our athletic scholarship program attempts to create the best educational and athletic oppor tunities for our student athletes. At Edinboro University, we are quite proud of our past successes and rich tradition, but we cannot bask in past accomplishments while our sister institutions pass us by in the world of ath letic fund raising. Once again, we look forward to hearing from you soon. Please feel free to contact my office with any questions about our fund drive. I enter tain any recommendations or suggestions which would better our University and its athletic department. Sincerely, Bruce R. Each spring, members of the Fighting Scot Booster Club will conduct a national and community-wide fund raising campaign to support the cost of athletic operating expenses. While student activity fees cover a portion of operating expenses, private funding is crucial in maintaining the level of excellence the Fighting Scot programs have enjoyed in recent years. Your membership affords Edinboro University and its athletic program the opportunity to offer a quality athletic and academic experience to its student-athletes. State appropri ations are not allotted for scholarships, making the Booster QTub and the departmental fund raising efforts the sole means of raising money for the athletic scholarships. ’99-00 ANNUAL ATHLETIC FUND DRIVE MEMBERS Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Adams Dr. William Alexander Brent E. He previously served three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Ohio University. The Fighting Scots posted a 5-4-1 ledger in his initial season, rallying for four wins and a tie in the final five games. Edinboro enjoyed one of its finest seasons ever the following year, finishing 8-3 and ranked seventh in Division II in 1989. The Scots captured their first PSAC West crown since winning the PSAC in 1970, finishing with a perfect 6-0 in league play. The lone losses came to a pair of Division l-AA institutions - Liberty and Youngstown State - and a thrilling 45-32 setback at perennial Division II power North Dakota State in the Division II playoffs. That contest marked Edinboro's first visit to NCAA postseason action, and also marked the Boro as one of the top Division II pro grams in the country. Following the 1989 season, Hollman was honored as the top coach in the East Region by the American Football Coaches Association and was selected the PSAC West Coach of the Year. Edinboro bettered the '89 campaign in 1990, going 9-3 and win ning its first-ever NCAA playoff game. The Scots won at Virginia Union, 38-14, before suffering a 14-7 setback to PSAC West rival Indiana (Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Just three weeks earlier the Indians handed Edinboro a 36-29 defeat in a showdown for the PSAC West crown. Edinboro's only other loss in 1990 came to Youngstown State by four points. Following a 7-4 record in 1991, Hollman's Scots finished as the PSAC West runner-up in 1992 and '93, but reached the NCAA play offs both years. In 1992, the Scots recorded a 8-2-1 ledger, drop ping a narrow 19-15 decision at Ferris State in the first round of postseason play. The '93 season featured a 8-3 finish and a sea son-ending 48-28 loss at New Haven in the first round of the play offs. With a 7-3 record in 1994, the Scots missed out on postseason action, but they returned in '95, thanks to a 9-2 record and a perfect 6-0 showing in the PSAC West. Following a 44-7 loss at Division IAA power Appalachian State in the second game of the season, Edinboro ran off eight straight wins to attain a playoff berth. New Haven again halted the Scots' playoff hopes in the first round with a 27-12 win. Edinboro was ranked eighth in the final NCAA Division II poll. Hollman was honored as the PSAC West Coach of the Year for the second time in 1995. The Scots went 6-4 in 1996, higjnfighted by a 48-35 victory over PSAC West champion Clarion. Th6 Golden Eagles would go on to Since taking over the Edinboro University football progrann in 1988, winning and Tom Hollman have become synonymous. Hollman ranks as the all-time winningest coach in Edinboro history, entering his 12th campaign with a 75-41-2 record. In addition to holding the career record for victo ries, Hollman's .644 winning per centage ranks second, bettered only by Denny Creehan (.658). Hollman has guided the Edinboro program to nine winning seasons in his first eleven years, marred only by four-win seasons in each of the last two years. That includes five NCAA Division II playoff appearances, the first ever for Edinboro. The Fighting Scots have also captured a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles, in 1989 and 1995, and have been consistently ranked in the national polls. Including four seasons as the head coach at Wooster College, Hollman showcases a career record of 99-52-3. That is good enough to rank him 22nd among all active Division II head coaches in winning percentage at .653. Hollman’s Wooster teams won six games in each of his four seasons, giving him a 24-11-1 ledger at the Division III school. He set the school record with 13 career interceptions, and was recognized as an All-American and AllDistrict performer in 1966 and 1967. Hollman also lettered in base ball for three years. Hollman's coaching career began in 1968 as an assistant coach at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio. After earning a Master's Degree in Education from Xavier University in 1971, he became head coach at Greenville High School in Ohio, posting an impressive 26-2-2 mark from 1971-73. Hollman then moved on to Fremont Ross High School in Ohio in 1974-75, where his teams were 15-3-2. Fremont Ross captured the 1974 Buckeye Conference champi onship with a 9-0-1 record. In 1976, Hollman advanced to the college ranks, joining his alma mater, Ohio Northern, as the school's defensive coordinator. He was named the head coach at Wooster College the following year. Hollman snapped a stretch of three consecutive losing seasons for the Scots in his first campaign, going 6-3. It would be the first of four straight six-win seasons. After four seasons in charge of the Wooster program, Hollman served as an assistant coach at Ball State University from 1981-84. He then moved on to Ohio University in 1985, serving as the defen sive coordinator until taking over at Edinboro in 1988. Hollman resides in Edinboro with his wife, Kandi. They have four children - Mari, Jon, Tim and Denise. .Years . . .9 . .19 . .11 . . .5 . . .5 . . .8 . . .5 . .11 . . .8 . .30 . .17 . . .6 . . .5 . .10 . .15 . .14 . .30 . .10 . . .9 . .12 . . .9 . .15 . .17 . .11 . .26 Won 93 184 80 41 38 65 36 85 64 205 140 49 35 70 101 107 214 66 65 84 64 99 117 76 175 Lost 16 45 23 14 14 24 14 33 25 83 58 21 15 33 48 52 106 33 32 43 34 52 64 41 95 Tied 2 2 1 1 0 2 0 1 2 6 1 1 1 1 3 1 4 1 4 1 0 3 2 4 7 Pet. .847 .801 .774 .741 .731 .725 .720 .718 .714 .707 .706 .697 .696 .678 .674 .672 .667 .665 .663 .660 .653 .653 .645 .645 .644 OPPOSITION American International . . . . If one word could sum up senior tight Barney's attitude entering the 1999 football season, it would be 'domi nate.' "I have to dominate. I have to dominate the man across from me. I have to dominate on running my routes. I have to dominate on catching the ball. I just have to ^H|r ^ ' 1 make you see me out there," says Barney. ^HBM iPi ,...\ "If you're watching the game, when you leave that game I want you to be asking, 'Did you see that tight end?' That's what I have to do out there." Edinboro University football fans won't be the only people Barney will be trying to impress with his play each week. At 6-4, 250 pounds, Barney has the size NFL scouts look for in a tight end. Offensive coordinator Scott Browning agrees, "In his mind and in a lot of people's minds, he is an NFL prospect. He's so big, he runs extremely well, he's got excellent hands, and he runs great routes. The thing that he's got to do to give himself an opportunity in an NFL camp is become a dominant blocker. I think he's worked hard in the weight room, which is where he needed to step for ward." Browning continued, "It's amazing, you look at Rob Barney, and then watch an NFL game on television. You're going to see tight ends who are 6-4, 250 pounds, and Rob Barney is that size. But the big thing is he is on a Division II football team, so he's got to do an exceptional job to get the next level." There is room for optimism. In last year's NFL draft, 12 tight ends were selected. Of those players, three were from Division II schools. One was drafted as high as the second round. Barney knows of the added pressure to perform at this level, "Being on this Division II level you really have to play hard and put everything into what you are doing because it's not on TV,” he stressed. “You have to do something to make them come see you. The only real difference is the exposure. A scout can just sit at home and watch them (Division I schools) play, where as he has to get on a plane to see me. That's the only difference. If you're put ting up good numbers and you're working hard in the weight room, I see no reason why you shouldn't have the same advantage as a Division I player." Barney opted to go Division II out of Central High School in Erie when he enrolled in Central State University of Ohio. Financial difficulties at the school led to cuts to the football program. Uncertain of the future of the team, Barney chose to transfer to Edinboro. "I decided to come to Edinboro because it is closer to home. What is most important to me is my family, and Edinboro is real close for my family to come and see me play." Barney started his first year with the Fighting Scots, but an injury forced him to miss nearly the entire 1997 season. "I popped a tendon in my ankle, which needed surgery to be put back. I was out for the rest of the year." Barney worked hard to rehabilitate the injury and came back to start the entire 1998 season. After just one catch for 10 yards in '97, Barney responded with 23 receptions for 241 yards in '98, his first full season with the then run-oriented Boro. As for this year, Barney has high expectations for himself and his team. "My goals for this season are basically team-based,” noted the Boro captain. “My main goal is to win the PSAC, but I do have individual goals. I'd like to be All-Conference. I feel I was overlooked in that last year. My ultimate goal is to be the best tight end in Division II. That's what I'm pushing towards." To be considered the best tight end in Dll, Barney is going to have to be the focal point of the Fighting Scots' offense. "I feel I should play a major role in the offense this year,” he admitted. “In the first couple games I don't think people will respect my ability. It was kind of shown last year, but I didn't get as many balls as I could have." When talking about his receptions this year, Barney says he'll take whatever comes his way. "Forty to fifty would be nice, but I'm just going to have to take them when I can get them. The ones I do get I have to make of the most of." Says head coach Tom Hollman, "He has a lot of potential to be a great receiver for us, and we will utilize him as such. The thing about Rob is that in crucial situations he has the knack to step for ward and be a very clutch performer." Barney's play in 1998 mirrored the sentiments of Hollman. In most of the third and fourth down situations the Fighting Scots faced last season, the Boro offense counted on Barney to move the chains. Many of these plays resulted in Barney taking nasty hits over the middle of the field. Barney will be asked to do much of the same this year for Edinboro, but under much more pressure. But Browning feels very confident about the ability of his senior captain to exceed the expectations. "He's worked extremely hard and he's a very goaloriented person,” Browning commented. “Whether he is drafted or invited to an NFL camp, getting the opportunity to play in the NFL is his ultimate goal." Barney has his own opinion on the NFL, "That's a goal of mine. I'm looking forward to the chance, and if it happens, great. But if it doesn't. I'm still going to enjoy college football and what I have done up to this point."
