McDonald has been at Edinboro since 1962 and for 12 years served as the Fighting Scot basketball coach (1962-1975) and never experienced a losing season while his teams compiled an impressive 181 wins against only 89 losses. During that span, his cagers won four Western Division Pennsylvania Conference crowns, the PC state championship and two District 18 titles that netted trips to the NAIA National Tournament. His teams set 27 University records and made 19 post-season appearances while four of his players were named All-Americans. Prior to accepting his position at Edinboro, McDonald served as assistant basketball coach in Erie, Pa. He is a 1956 graduate of Bridgeport High School in his home town of Bridgeport, West Virginia. In 1960 he received a degree in chemistry and physical education from West Virginia Wesleyan College and he also holds a master's degree in health from the University of Buffalo. As an undergraduate, he set nine school records at Wesleyan and was twice voted both AP and UPI basketball All-American. In 1960, he was the second leading scorer in the United States, averaging slightly over 33 points a game, and led his team to the national basket ball tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. He was named to the NAIA's All-Tournament Team in 1959 and 1960. In 1966, McDonald was selected Area Eight Coach of the Year by the eastern seaboard coaches and that same year was hon ored as one of the top ten finalists in the Coach of the Year national poll. McDonald's honors also include selection to the West Virginia AllTime College Basketball Team and member ship in the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. As a resident of Edinboro, McDonald has a record of extensive community involvement. He was Little League Baseball director for four years and also held a four-year post as a mem ber of the General McLane School Board. He and his wife, Mary Lou, have three sons Mark, Mike and Matthew. Jim McDonald Edinboro University's athletic program was placed under the talented and aggressive leadership of Jim McDonald in July of 1981. Increased emphasis on fund raising to provide a sound scholarship foundation has become his top priority while numerous changes and inno vations have also keyed the Scots' athletic pro gram under his direction. Through his efforts more than $3 million has been raised during the past seven years. The funds generated by the energetic aAletic director's efforts will be used to assist Edinboro's men and women athletes who com pete in the Scots fifteen intercollegiate sports. In addition to maintaining Edinboro's respected winning tradition in intercollegiate athletics, the former health and physical educa tion professor has vastly expanded the University's summer activities. Fifty-two camps were sponsored by the Fighting Scots Booster Club this past summer on the University's campus. Sox Harrison Stadium is the site of the Cleveland Browns vs. the Buffalo Bills annual rookie scrimmage, which has been a yearly mid-summer highlight. The personable athletic director also intro duced Edinboro's Hall of Fame program which 4 HEAD COACH TOM HOLLMAN make football an enjoyable environment for the team and coaching staff," Hollman added. Hollman's educational background begins with a high school diploma from Memorial High School in St. Mary's, Ohio, followed by his undergraduate degree in education from Ohio Northern University in 1968. Three years later Hollman received his master of science degree in education from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. While at Ohio Northern, Hollman was a three-year starter for the football team and a two-way performer as a defensive back and offensive end during his junior and senior years. He holds the school record with 13 career interceptions and earned All-American and All-District honors during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Hollman also lettered in baseball for three years during his stay at Ohio Northern. A chronological look at Hollman's coach ing career begins in 1968 as an assistant coach at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio. From there, Hollman moved on to Greenville High School in Ohio where he became head coach from 1971-73. His Greenville squads posted an impressive 26-2-2 mark during his three-year stay. Hollman then moved on to Fremont Ross High School as head coach for the 1974 and 1975 seasons, where his squad recorded 15 wins against three setbacks and two ties. Fremont was the Buckeye Conference champs in '74, unbeaten at 9-0-1. In '76, Hollman moved on to the collegiate ranks where he was the defensive coordinator for his alma mater at Ohio Northern University. The following year, Hollman accepted the head coach position at Wooster College (OH) and guided his squad to the best four-year record in the school's history (24-11-1). In 1981, Hollman took an assistant coach ing spot with Ball State University which he held through the '84 campaign. Then, begiiming in 1985 Hollman held the defensive coordinator position at Ohio University. "It has been a very comfortable transition for me," Hollman added. "I have found the community to be supportive and the administra tion is giving me every opportunity to be suc cessful here at Edinboro," he concluded. Tom Hollman In January 1988, Edinboro University hired Tom Hollman, Athens, Ohio, as its eleventh head football coach in the school's his tory. Hollman comes to Edinboro from Ohio University, where he was the defensive coordi nator for the past three seasons. "Last season was a very exciting one and we are simply looking to improve each year," Hollman stated after his initial term. Hollman led the Scots to a 5-4-1 mark, becoming only the second head coach in Edinboro football his tory to post a winning season his first year. "As a staff and team we are looking forward to an excellent season. We finished just a half game out of the division crown last year so that should give us the extra incentive we need in 1989." "As a coach, I have been fortunate to coach at many different levels, from high school to Division I. The Division II level here at Edinboro is very appealing to me in relation to my career goals. It is a great feeling to be a head coach at this level." "I still feel one of the most important things about football on the Division II level is to make it fun for the players involved. My ini tial goal for this team when I got here was to 5 ASSISTANT COACHES Dan Gierlak enters his third season as a full-time coach with his responsibilities con cerning the running backs. He is also the head women's softball coach for the Scots and led the squad to a 19-14 overall slate last year. His coaching stint began back while attending Findley when he was the head scout for Arlington High School. The next two sea sons, Niswonger was the defensive coordinator at West Carrollton High School (OH) where his squad posted an impressive 17-1-2 slate. THE PAST 24 • • • 1988 SEASON IN REVIEW Liberty 17 - Edinboro 7 Edinboro University took the field for the 1988 opener against Division I-AA Liberty University and proceeded to give the Flames all that they could handle. Liberty led throughout the first half on a Joe Pouncey field goal, but with 0:44 left in the half, Scot WR John Toomer caught a 13-yard TD pass from QB Hal Galupi and the Scots appeared ready to take a 7-3 lead into the half. Disaster struck Edinboro just forty seconds later when Flame QB Paul Johnson connected on a 45-yard TD strike to Pat Nelson. Liberty took a 10-7 lead into the half and went on to defeat Edinboro 17-7 in front of over 5,000 fans. Edinboro's Elbert Cole was the offensive star of the day, gaining 94 yards rushing on the rain soaked Sox Harrison Stadium field. But the difference in the game was Liberty QB Johnson, who fought off the weather and com pleted 15 of 20 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Another bright spot for Edinboro was the play of free safety Mike Willis, who had what would be a season high 20 tackles. Edinboro was only outgained by 50 yards in the game, but the play of Johnson kept the Flames out of reach. The Scots scored two unanswered touch downs, one in the third period and one at the beginning of the fourth, to take a commanding lead. The Scots never relinquished that lead and went on to post the 37-28 victory, evening their record at 1-1. New Haven 30 - Edinboro 14 Edinboro hit the road for the first time and ran into a buzz saw in New Haven, Connecticut. The Fighting Scots could do noth ing as New Haven piled up 418 total yards enroute to a 30-14 victory over the Scots. Edinboro's sound running game was firm ly shut down, gaining only 84 yards on 45 car ries. The bright spot offensively for Edinboro was the play of both Jim Ross and Hal Galupi at quarterback. Ross connected on 8 of 11 pass es for 136 yards, the long pass being a 56-yard strike to John Toomer. Galupi passed for 143 yards, completing 15 of 24. The only Boro scores came on two short TD runs, one by Cole and one by Chris Conway. Edinboro went into halftime tied at 7-7, and were tied at 14-14 with 3:00 left in the third quarter. But New Haven scored three unan swered touchdowns on their way to a 30-14 victory. lUP 27 - Edinboro 7 Edinboro traveled south to the campus of Indiana University the next week for their con ference opener, prepared to do battle with the highly touted Indians. lUP got on top of the Scots early by post ing a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. For the next three periods, Edinboro played Indiana even. With the score still 14-0, Edinboro got within a touchdown on a 1-yard TD run by Matt Koehle. But that was as close as the Boro would get as lUP went on to score two late game touchdowns and post the final 27-7 score. Edinboro fell to 1-3 and were 0-1 in the PSAC West. Edinboro 37 - Saginaw Valley 28 5,000 Fighting Scot fans packed Sox Harrison Stadium the following week and were treated to an offensive showcase put on by both Edinboro and Saginaw Valley. Edinboro totaled 345 yards on offense, most of it via the legs of running back Elbert Cole. Cole rushed for 100 yards on 27 carries with one touchdown. Edinboro found the board first as the Scots scored on their first drive of the game. QB Hal Galupi hit John Toomer for a 39-yard TD strike and the Scots were up 7-0. Saginaw, not to be outdone, proceeded to knot the score at 7-7 on their first drive. Two Darren Weber field goals and a 29yard interception return for a TD by Brian Keaton finished off the Scot scoring in the half while SV's Rob Cook ran back the last kickoff of the half 92 yards to make the score 20-14 Edinboro at the half. Kutztown 34 - Edinboro 22 Edinboro hit the road for the third straight game and left Kutztown with their third straight loss. Following the 34-22 loss at the hands of the Golden Bears, Edinboro saw its overall record dip to 1-4. 26 Kutztown got off to a fast start, climbing out to a quick 13-0 lead. Their first score came off an Edinboro miscue as Todd Hopwood recovered a Scot fumble in the end zone. Kutztown followed that up with a short TD run with just 1:09 left in the first period. But Edinboro's Cleveland Pratt pulled the Scots right back in the game by returning the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to get Edinboro within a touchdown, trailing only 13-7 at the end of one quarter. Edinboro took their only lead of the game with 5:25 left in the half when Pratt caught a 15-yard TD pass from Hal Galupi. That strike gave the Boro a 14-13 lead, but it was short lived. With 2:45 left in the half, Kutztown took the lead for good when Eric Werley scored his second TD of the game on a 5-yard run. The Golden Bears were successful on the two-point conversion and took a 21-13 lead into the lock er room. Edinboro stayed close, but Kutztown maintained the momentum and got the victory. The Scot offense was held to just 190 total yards, 138 of that coming from the arm of QB Galupi. The Scot defense gave up over 400 yards and Edinboro was in dire need of a morale boost. Edinboro 35 - Clarion 0 Homecoming turned out to be just what was needed to stop the downward spiral that the Scots found themselves in. Following the previ ous weeks dismal offensive performance, the Scot offense exploded for almost 500 yards, while the defense pitched their first shutout of the season. Edinboro crushed arch-rival Clarion 35-0. Elbert Cole was the star of the day as the All-American RB ran for 178 yards on just 16 carries, while scoring three of Edinboro's five TDs. Scot QB Hal Galupi also had a fine day completing nine of 17 passes for 212 yards with one touchdown (that being a 69-yard bomb to WR Cleveland Pratt). Edinboro did most of the damage in the second period. Taking a 7-0 lead into quarter number two via a 30 yard Cole TD run Edinboro proceeded to score 28 points in the stanza to post what would be the final score of the game. Chris Conway got things started on a 3-yard plunge. Elbert Cole then scored two straight touchdowns, one a 6 yarder and the other a 55-yard dash. The final score was 27 Galupi's bomb to Pratt with 2:45 left in the half. The victory broke a three game losing streak and raised the Scot's record to 2-4 over all and 1-1 in the Conference. Edinboro 45 - Lock Haven 7 After last week's win over Clarion, many Scot faithful expected a letdown as Edinboro traveled to Lock Haven to play the Bald Eagle club that had posted a 1-4-1 record previous to the game. The Boro defense had other things in mind as they led the Scots to a sound 45-7 drubbing of LHU. Coming off their first shutout, Edinboro's defense shut out the opposition for the second straight game. The lone Bald Eagle score came via a kickoff return, as the Edinboro defense had gone eight straight quarters without being scored on. The stingy Edinboro defense, led by Mike Willis and Chip Conrad, limited Lock Haven to only 4 total yards in the first half and only 62 for the entire game. The Edinboro sec ondary backed up the play of the line by pick ing off four Eagle passes. Edinboro's offense, given plenty of breath ing room, proceeded to rack up a season high 45 points. Elbert Cole again led the way, gain ing 96 tough yards on the ground while QB Hal Galupi passed for 158 yards. Scot WR John Toomer was Galupi's main target, hauling in three passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns. Galupi also threw a TD pass to Cleveland Pratt. The win boosted ^inboro's record to 3-4 overall and placed them in the thick of the PSAC West race with a 2-1 record. Edinboro 19 - Shippensburg 10 Edinboro 2-1, Shippensburg 3-0. Those two records said everyAing about the impor tance of this game to the Fighting Scots. After two straight victories, Edinboro found them selves at home with a chance to claim a share of the PSAC lead and to even their overall record at 4-4. Although the Scots won by what apjpears to be a close 19-10 margin, the game was never in doubt. The Normal School Act of 1857 established regional teacher training institutions throughout the Commonwealth. The School Code of 1911 called for the state purchase of all normal schools, and by 1921 the present configu ration of 14 state-owned universities was established. The 14 normal schools evolved from state normal schools, to state teachers colleges, to state colleges. On Novranber 12, 1982, Act 188 was signed into law establishing on July 1, 1983 the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Thus, the 13 former state col leges joined with Indiana University of Pennsylvania to achieve university status. The universities have a cumulative history of 1,600 years. There are 14 universities in the State System of Higher Education with three branch campuses and the McKeever Environmenud Center. The total student population among the System universities is 92,000. While 88% of students are from Permsylvania, they represent many other states and foreign countries. The total university campus has over 4,000 acres in 19 Pennsylvania coxmties. □ □ □ □ □ Buildings for classrooms, residences, administration and student support number 690. Collectively the 14 universities offer 225 imdergraduate and 98 graduate degree pro grams, led by 5,000 full-time faculty members. An average 75% of undergraduate studoits receive some form of financial assis tance to help meet costs. Several study abroad programs are avail able in System universities. System uni versities are part of the Pennsylvania Council for International Education. All the universities support life-long learn ing programs throughout the academic year. Many feature Elderhostel. Most universities have honors programs, student counseling and career planning, cooperative education, and internship pro grams. System library holdings total more than 5.1 million volumes and 3.5 million peri odicals, microforms, and audio materids. The universities in the State System of Higher Education are fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and several appropriate nation al professional organizations. Last year, the System awarded 15,128 degrees, over 40% in arts and sciences, 25% in education, 24% in business, and 8% in health-related fields. System graduates living in the Commonwealth number over 240,000. 1989 SCHEDULE September 9 Sat. at Liberty University (1:40 p.m.) September 16 Sat. UNIV. OF NEW HAVEN (1:00 p.m.) September 23 Sat.
