Browning is a 1973 graduate of Loudonville High School where he lettered in both football and track for four years. He was enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1976-80, then enrolled at Ohio State University where he received his B.S. in physical education in 1983. Browning plans to complete his masters work in athletic administration, and is also planning to continue his studies towards a B.S. degree in computer science. “Steve is very disciplined, hard working and responsible,” offered Buckeye coach Earl Bruce. “I wouldn’t hesitate to rehire him on my staff,” added the Ohio State mentor. In addition to his three years at Ohio State, Szabo spent 1977 and 1978 as a defensive line coach at Iowa State. From 1974 through 1976 he was a defensive line coach at Syracuse University, and the three previous seasons he coached the offensive line, defensive line and linebackers respectively at the University of Iowa. He was also an assistant at the University of Toledo and John Hopkins University. Before joining the 6 PAUL DUNN - Offensive Line Named new offensive line coach at EUP is Paul Dunn, an assistant at both Pitt and Penn State the past three years. Dunn brings a great knowledge of how the game is played in the interior, having been a three-year starter at Pitt for offensive line coach Joe Moore, considered one of the best in his trade. After graduating from Pitt in 1983 with a B.S. in administration of justice, Dunn served as a graduate assistant line coach at Pitt (1983-84) and Penn State (198486). Dunn’s experience with the linemen should help the Scots build a steady offensive line this year. The Prospect, Pennsylvania, native is married to the former Melody Eckels. 7 ASSISTANT COACHES ATHLETIC STAFF / DAN GIERLAK - Secondary physical education from Baldwin Wallace, and a master’s of science degree from Emporia State University in 1980, majoring in athletic administration. Greg comes to Edinboro with his wife Jeannie and four children, Phillip (6), Nathan (3), Bonnie (2), and 6-month old Benjamin. Dan Gierlak joined the EUP coaching ranks last spring with responsibilities directed to the defensive secondary. Coming to the Boro from Thiel College, where he coached the secondary for the 1984 season, Gierlak’s athletic background secured his position on the staff. Gierlak is coming off an outstanding career on the gridiron which began in Edinboro in 1979. A starter and three year letterwinner during his collegiate days, Dan moved on to the Chicago Cowboys, a semi-pro club in the midwest. Gierlak was a defensive back and outside linebacker during his two season stay, years where the Cowboys were tabbed national champions in 1984 and national runners-up in ‘85. Dan is single and resides in Edinboro. JAMES BRITT, MARK MERRITT, JOE MANCUSO - Student Coaches A trio of 1985 Fighting Scot gridders join the Edinboro coaching staff this season, as Jim Britt, Mark Merritt and Joe Mancuso are aboard to aid the Boro cause. Britt, a first team Pennsylvania Conference selection last season on the offensive line, will be tabbed assistant defensive line coach, and also aid in scouting of the opposition. Britt was a four-year letterman for the plaid, coming to the Boro from Girard High School in Ohio. Jim is currently working on his degree in business administration. Merritt, d four-year letterman at EUP, coached the offensive line last spring and will be responsible for tight end and offensive line assignments this fall. Tabbed second team PC a year ago, Merritt anchored the plaid offensive front from his center position. A product of Western Beaver High School, Merritt will complete his requirements for his health and physical education degree this year. “Bear,” originally from Industry, Pennsylvania, is single and resides in Edinboro. Mancuso will aid as a student assistant after a shoulder injury this past spring caused him to move to the coaching ranks. Joe will be used as an assistant wide receiver coach for the plaid this season. A two-year letterman on the EUP squad, Mancuso came to the Boro from Connellsville High School where he lettered three years in football and basketball. Mancuso is working toward his degree in speech communication. GREG QUICK - Defensive Coordinator Greg Quick begins his coaching career at EUP this year taking over the defensive coordinator spot after the departure of Tom Herman to New Hampshire. Quick comes to the Boro from New Mexico State University where he coached linebackers during the 1985 season. A rundown of Quick’s coaching career started at Emporia State University, where from 1979-83, Greg coached the offensive line, defensive secondary, and was tabbed as defensive coordinator for his final two seasons. Quick returned to the high -school ranks for the 1983-84 season, coaching football, basketball and track at St. Edwards High School in Cleveland. Following his season in the scholastic ranks. Quick moved on to Heidelberg College for the 1984 campaign where he was offensive line coach, as well as offensive coordinator. Quick also brings to the Boro some impressive playing credentials, as he was the starting center on a national championship club at Baldwin-Wallace in 1978. A brief look at Quick’s educational and personal background is as follows: 1979-B.A. degree in health and Kathleen Lipkovich Harold “Hal” Umbarger Todd V. Jay ASSISTANT TO THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HAROLD “HAL” UMBARGER ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DR. KATHLEEN LIPKOVICH Dr. Kathleen Lipkovich was named Edinboro’s first associate athletic director at the outset of the 1981 school year to help administer both the men’s and women’s athletic program. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Lipkovich has had teaching and coaching experience at West Virginia University, Central Connecticut State College, and Trinity College. The Ohio native, who graduated from Chaney High School, began her teaching and coaching career in 1972 with the Howland Local School District in Howland, Ohio, and then held a similar position from 1972 through 1975 at McDonald High School in McDonald, Ohio. The 1972 Youngstown State graduate received her M.S. degree in 1975 from West Virginia University and was awarded a doctorate from that same institution in 1977 after majoring in educational administration and physical education. She completed a post doctoral fellowship at Harvard in educational administration prior to her arrival at Edinboro. Harold “Hal” Umbarger joined Edinboro University’s athletic staff three years ago as assistant to the athletic director. He brings a wealth of talent and experience to the administrative level of the athletic program and plays a vital role in overseeing the academic progress of student athletes as well as coordinating the on-going functions of the athletic director’s office and the summer programs which involve the department. The West Newton, Pa., native is a 1954 Slippery Rock University graduate and also owns his masters degree from Penn State. After a three-year stint with the U.S. Army Security Agency in Europe, he coached basketball and baseball at Moshannon Valley (Pa.) High School before accepting a guidance position in the West York Area School District in 1961. He became a member of Edinboro’s admissions office a year later and in 1967 was named director of admissions. During his tenure more than 40,000 students were admitted to Edinboro University. SPORTS INFORMATION AND PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR TODD V. JAY TEAM TRAINER - GEORGE ROBERTS George M. Roberts of Titusville, Pa., is beginning his second year as athletic trainer at Edinboro University. George and his wife. Penny, have a four-year-old daughter, Kristin. Todd Jay begins his second year of publicizing Edinboro Univer sity’s athletic program and assisting in sports promotion for the Fighting Scots. A graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Todd received a bachelor of science in education in 1982 and a master of science in communications in May of 1985. The New Castle native served as assistant to the sports information director at Clarion. During the past year. Jay has written releases for 16 inter collegiate sports, edited and produced athletic programs and brochures, and compiled statistics at all events. In addition, Todd hosted a weekly television show on local cable, featuring Fighting Scot football and basketball. He also did the promotion for numerous EUP all americans and received an award from the Amateur Wrestling News for his publication on the USA-Cuban meet held last March. A three-year letterwinner in baseball at Clarion, Jay served as news-sports correspondent for the New Castle News, while also serving as assistant basketball coach for Neshannock High School during his teaching stay in New Castle. On radio. Jay has hosted weekly shows in Clarion and Edinboro featuring intercollegiate athletics and assisting in overall sports promotion. The voice of the Fighting Scots for home football games, Todd is single and resides in Edinboro. 8 George Roberts 9 FIGHTING SCOTS SELECT TRI-CAPTAINS In voting done by the players last spring, the EUP football team and coaching staff announced the appointment of three seniors as tri-captains for the 1986 season. Quarterback Scott Dodds, defensive tackle Abdul Hakim and center Dave Higham were selected as field generals for the Scots. Second-year head coach Steve Szabo feels the three were well chosen and have already shown their leadership qualities to date. “Dodds and Higham were our leaders a year ago on offense and both should be comfortable with their position as captains this season,” Szabo said. “Also, Abdul has made a smooth transition from linebacker to down lineman, and he is well aware that the move to the trenches will benefit this ball club. The team did the selecting and that is what is important. Team unity is very important, and the quality of captains has a lot to do with the progress and direction of a football team,” Szabo added. Dodds, a Beaver (PA) high school product, begins his second season as captain of the Fighting Scot squad. At quarterback, Dodds knows his role as club leader. “Last season I had to establish myself and gain the respect of the players,” Dodds commented. “But going into this season the adjustment is over. I am looking forward to the opportunity to take this team to a conference title.” Although 1985 was Dodds’ initial season as a starter, he put some impressive numbers on the board in leading the Scots to a winning season. Dodds established school records for completions in a game when he connected for 19 against Slippery Rock, and for completions in a season with 111, breaking Blair Hrovat’s mark by an even dozen. Across the board, Dodds totaled 1,380 yards and 7 touchdowns on 216 attempts through the air, while rushing for an additional 267 and a pair of scores. His total offense per game numbers ranked him third in the Pennsylvania Conference. For his career, Dodds has completed 127 of 247 passes (51%) for 1,631 yards and 10 touchdowns. His ground totals are 371 yards on 126 totes for 3 touchdowns. With 1985 and a full year of experience behind him, Dodds is likely to turn into one of the top quarterbacks in the rugged 14 team conference. Higham, from Hubbard High School in Ohio, will be in the starting lineup for the fourth consecutive year when the Scots open their season against Wayne State (MI). Most notably a center, “Higs” showed his versatility as a player last season, starting all ten games at either center, guard or tackle. “Dave Higham was our most consistent performer on the offensive front last season,” Szabo said. “He is, without a doubt, one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever coached. He never complains, plays hurt, and simply goes out and does his job every day. He is an excellent selection for captain,” Szabo added. A legitimate All-American candidate, Higham has been part of an offensive front which has cleared the way for Edinboro runners to the tune of better than 249 yards per game over the last 3 seasons. In 1983, the Scots totaled 2,948 yards and 33 touchdowns in Higham’s initial season, while rushing for 2,441 yards and 24 scores his sophomore year. A year ago. with Higham being the only offensive lineman to start every game, the plaid rushed for 2,090 yards and 20 touchdowns. With the offensive line situation still very much up in the air, Higham will be called on to try and unite such a young squad. “I realize the youth and inexperience in our offensive line this season,” Higham said. “That puts some pressure on me being a veteran to try and unite this group into a good offensive front. Sometimes we get overlooked, but we know the importance of our role. In order for an offense to execute, the offensive line is the most important element,” Higham added. Hakim, from nearby Erie Academy, was a part-time starter for the plaid a year ago at linebacker, but this season has made the move to defensive tackle. “When we made the change from the 3-4 defense, we had to come up with some quality lineman and Hakim fit the bill,” Szabo said. “He’s been chosen as our leader on defense, and the staff feels he will do a ifine job. He is aggressive, quick and smart, plus he has handled the change in position quite well.” At 5T0", 200 pounds a year ago, Hakim ranked 13th on the squad in tackles /With 40 (16 unassisted), while registering a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage. “In the heat of the game, it is very important to have people on the field that you know can take control of a game if need be. As a coach, it is vital to have confidence in your captains, and I feel the players did an outstanding job in the selection. With the youth of our squad this season, the importance of our three senior captains grows even more. Down the stretch of a close game, it will be nice to know that Dodds, Higham and Hakim will be the field generals for us,” Szabo concluded. 10 ALL-AMERICAN PLACEKICKER JIM TRUEMAN With two All-American seasons behind him, Edinboro University placekicker Jim Trueman has accomplished a great deal. Has it changed the Northgate High School product at all? Not one bit. “I really do try to keep things in proper perspective,” Trueman noted. “I have always been a team player and my goals have always been team oriented. At this position, you realize that you are going to be put into situations where it may look like the kicker has either won or lost the game by what is done on a single kick of the football. But realistically, the other eleven men on the field are far more important than I am. They have to be sharp on every play and that’s pressure. I simply go out and try and do my best on each snap.” The Associated Press has tabbed Trueman as All-Ameri can the past two years, and 1986 should be no different barring any type of injury. His numbers speak for themselves. In his freshman campaign back in 1983, Trueman was good on 39 of 43 extra points and 10 of 15 field goals for 69 points and a 13th ranking in the NCAA Division II scoring leaders. And he was not chosen All-American. Trueman used these numbers to raise some eyebrows across the country. “Being only a fresh man it is real tough to get the recognition across the country, but things have picked up since,” noted Trueman. His sophomore season was almost a carbon copy, as “True” connected on 42 of 43 PAT’s and 11 of 16 three pointers for 75 points and his first All-American season. His 75 tallies ranked him sixth in the country’s elite based on a points per game total. “In my first two years here at the Boro, I was very fortunate to play with some high powered offenses, so my numbers were high,” Trueman added. In 1986, with the Edinboro scoring numbers not up to past standards, Trueman’s point totals were not as high, but the dead-eye accuracy was still there. The Bellevue, PA, native connected on 10 of 15 field goals and 19 of 23 extra points fora solid total of 49. Of his 10 conversions on 3-pointers, 4 of those boots came on the road against Central Connecticut for a new Edinboro record, 1 of 5 he currently owns. On his most recent record Trueman was quick to point out where the credit was due. “That night in Connecticut the offense put me in some good field position to make those kicks. After all, they worked very hard that night offensively, and if it just so happens to stall then I’m called on to do my job,’’Trueman said. That evening Trueman was good on attempts from 29 twice, 40 and 42 yards, while missing from 45 and 52. “Five would have been nice, but I just came up short,” he added. When it comes to records Trueman is no stranger. Besides the four field goals in one game he also currently owns marks in: most extra points in one season (42), most consecutive extra points (41), most extra points in one game (7), and a running total of 100 for PAT’s in a career. Trueman has converted lOO-of-109 extra points for a solid 92% while connecting on 3 l-of-46 three pointers for 67% in his initial three seasons at the Boro. As far as additional records for 1986, there is one that stands out which could literally put Trueman in a class by himself. With his current point total of 193, Jim needs 72 points to break the all-time Pennsylvania Conference scoring record for total points, a mark set by Millersville University halfback Ricky Stonewall (1981-84). “Just shooting for the total is a great situation to be in,” Trueman commented. “When I came here I knew we would score some points, but the all-time scoring mark was not in my sights. I am just thankful for the opportunity to kick for such an outstanding football program.” Also in reach are the long-standing kicking records in the PC set by former Clarion great Bill May. May currently holds the NCAA Division II mark for field goals in a game with five, while also securing conference records for field goals in a season (16) and career (49). All three marks are definitely within reach, but Trueman once again shows his unselfishness in response. “They would all be nice, I cannot deny that fact. But I would trade them all for a conference title and a trip to the national playoffs. This is my final season to get one, and I’m hungry for a title,” Trueman concluded. Edinboro head coach Steve Szabo knows the importance of a Jim Trueman on a football team and is quick to point it out. “Jim is a quality placekicker and you don’t find too many of those on the Division II level. With some teams a field goal attempt is a real adventure, but not with Trueman. He is almost a guarantee. Like I have said in the past, Trueman will be a deciding factor in many of our ball games this season. As a coach I am looking for the consistent performers and that is what Jim Trueman is,” Szabo concluded. In closing Trueman offered credit where credit was due as he summed up his successful kicking career. “The snap and the hold. Most of the time it is overlooked by football fans. This season, snapper Kevin Collins and my holder Dave Gierlak will play vital roles in the success of our kicking game. They are very important to me and did an outstanding job a year ago,” Trueman added. 11 SCOTS LOOKING TO IMPROVE ON 5-4-1 MARK Second-year head coach Steve Szabo and his Fighting Scot football squad are looking to improve on their third place finish in the rugged Pennsylvania Conference Western Divi sion a year ago, as the Plaid prepare for another hard-nosed season among the PC heavyweights. In 1986, the Scots return a host of talent which should put them in the heat of the battle come title time. “We feel that we have the talent in the skilled positions to make the big plays this year, which should allow us to open up our offense a little more,” Szabo said. Traditionally a Wing-T squad on offense, the Scots are likely to use a more pro oriented approach to their ‘86 offensive plan. “With the year of growth and maturity for quarterback Scott Dodds, we will be using the two wide receiver set more often this season. Scotty proved he could throw the ball a year ago, and I have confidence his numbers will be even better in 1986,” Szabo continued. Most definitely, if the Plaid is going to contend for the division crown, the weight of the EUP offense falls on the shoulders of tri-captain Dodds. The 6'3" signal caller from Beaver, PA, should establish himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the conference this year, coming off a brilliant junior season, posting numbers good enough to rank third in the entire conference in total offense. Completing a school record 111 passes on 216 attempts, Dodds totaled 1,380 yards through the air for 7 touchdowns, while also churning out 267 hard-earned yards on the ground foj; his third place showing in the PC. Dodds averaged 164.7 y/lrds per game for the “o,” placing him behind only Rich Ingold of lUP and Brendon Folmar of California. “Scott showed me a lot of poise a year ago, and we’ll call on him to lead the offense all season. If we can get the protection for him to open up his game, no telling what kind of numbers he will put up,” Szabo stated. “You also can’t overlook his ability to run the football. He has deceptive speed, with a knack for finding the opening on the corner.” Indeed, the offensive front will be the key to the Plaid’s success this season, as the Scots look to replace four quality veterans lost through graduation. Leading the list of returnees up front will be tri-captain Dave Higham. The 6'2", 240-pound center will anchor the Scot interior, a place “Higs” has romped successfully over the last three seasons. “Higham is one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever coached,” stated Szabo. “He comes to play every down and give his 100%. There were games last year, where he should have never played but somehow managed to get himself ready for action every Saturday.” The fifth-year senior from Hubbard, OH, will have to pull a somewhat green offensive front together if the Scot 12 The 71 tallies may seem out of sight, but not for Trueman. The 5'8", 180 pound, Bellevue, PA, product has totaled 69, 75, and 49 points for his total of 193 in his first 3 years, and is looking forward to a crack at the record. “For Trueman to get the mark, we have to have a great year offensively, and get better field position fo; the three points,” Szabo said. When it comes to accuracy, Trueman’s numbers can be matched with anyone’s across the country. His freshman campaign, “True” connected on 39-of-43 extra points and lO-of-15 field goals, followed by 42-for-43 and an ll-for-16 showing his sophomore season. With the EUP offense sputtering at times a year ago, Trueman posted lower numbers but his range was still there; connecting on 19-of-23 PAT’S and 10-15 field goal attempts. A very consistent offensive weapon throughout his EUP career, Trueman will be relied on heavily to help carry the scoring load for the Plaid once again this fall. On the offensive receiving end, the Scots will enter the 1986 campaign with the same corp of players they had a year ago. Leading the squad with 22 receptions last season was Dave Gierlak (Buffalo, NY). The Scots’ prime possession receiver, Gierlak totaled 300 yards through the air and 1 score, while rushing for 53 yards on just 2 carries including a 19 yard scoring jaunt. Also looking for playing time this fall will be Cleveland Pratt (10 catches, 114 yards), Daryl Cameron (6 for 73) and John Toomer (5 for 42). One strength the Scots are assured of this fall, will be at the tight end position. Returning to anchor the offensive front will be veterans Bob Suren (Parma, OH), Scott Brown (Greensburg, PA) and Brian Ferguson (Bethel Park, PA). Suren, in just 8 games, grabbed 12 passes for 152 yards and 3 scores, while Brown latched on to 5 passes for 81 and a score. Defensively the Scots will make the transition from their traditional 3-4 defense, back to the old school 4-3 set. Up front, the Plaid will return a pair of all-conference performers in Chuck Murray (Tyrone, PA) and Rob Lewis (Rochester, NY). Murray, at 6'4", 255, caused many problems for opposing offenses in 1985, registering 59 tackles, including 5 behind the line of scrimmage. A first team All-Conference choice, Murray will have to be in top form to solidify the Boro defense. Lewis, also an imposing figure at 6'3", 250, should really come into his own in ‘86, coming off a 38 tackle performance last season. A second-team choice in ‘85, Lewis also tallied 5 stops for loss, while collecting 1 QB sack. “Murray and Lewis will be the key to our defensive performance this season,” Szabo added. “With the year of experience they got last season, both will be a force to contend with in the middle. With our inexperience at linebacker, we will be looking for those two to make plenty of stops.” Joining Murray and Lewis across the front will be tri-captain Abdul Hakim and Harlen Ware. Hakim, a converted linebacker to defensive tackle, was in on 40 stops a year ago including a pair for losses. Ware, the squad’s outstanding defensive player in the annual red-white scrim mage in the spring, was 14th on the team in tackles a year ago in reserve role, registering 34 stops and causing a pair of fumbles. The linebacking crew for 1986 will consist of a mix of veterans and second year players, with a pair of positions not yet filled. Allen Ellis (Albion, NY) the squad’s fourth leading tackier with 68 stops, and John Cardone (Pittsburgh, PA) third on the team with 71 tackles will anchor the middle line of running attack is going to live up to past standards. Also looking to crack the starting offensive line will be guards Larry Rosenthal (Manassas, VA) and Dave Nye (Windsor, OH). Both return with game experience from a year ago, and will be relied on to help carry the load up front. At tackle, the Scots are looking at converted defensive player Rob Brownrigg and sophomore Mark Courtney (Salem, OH). Also looking to aid the Plaid up front will be a host of talented freshmen, led by 6T", 235-pound tackle Joseph Brooks. A product of Austintown Fitch High School in Youngstown, OH, Brooks could help the squad right away. “We feel that we have a quality individual in Brooks,” Szabo said. “He is a fine looking athlete with great agility. He also is a very versatile lineman, so he can help us anywhere across the front. In addition to Brooks, Szabo’s list of impressive freshmen include Brad Powell (6'2", 240, West Middlesex, PA), Dan Shaffer (6'3", 255, Youngs town, OH), Tom Terhart (6'2", 215, Lackawanna, NY) and Rich Urko (6'2", 250, Monongahela, PA) to help the Scots in the trenches. Traditionally the strength of the Scot offense, the running game should be as strong as ever with the return of Floyd Faulkner, Jim Pisano, Ross Rankin and John Georgiana. Faulkner (Coraopolis, PA) should be the Scots’ starting halfback on opening day this season, a role he has looked forward to for two years. The squad’s second leading ball carrier last season, Faulkner netted 429 yards on just 89 totes for a solid 4.8 yards per carry average and three touchdowns. Also a threat out of the backfield, Faulkner caught 14 passes for 122 and 1 TD in 1985. “Floyd should really come into his own this season,” Szabo said. “He has great balance and is a true break-away threat every time he touches the football.” Pisano (Lower Burrell, PA) is likely to be the Scots’#! fullback due to his unselfish nature and nose for the goal line. Leading the squad a year ago in rushing touchdowns with 5, Pisano carried the skin 66 times for 263 tough yards for a 4.0 average. Meanwhile, Rankin (Canton, OH) and Georgiana (Altoona, PA) posted 251 and 72 yards respectively a year ago to give the team a strong returning corp to the EUP backfield. Rankin also latched onto 10 passes for 142 yards last season, while Georgiana touched pay dirt every 8 times he touched the football from his fullback spot. Although the squad is solid in the backfield, coach Szabo has brought in some quality freshman that could make an immediate impact on the squad. Heading the list of newcomers are Oil City High School sprinter Chris Conway and Erie native Mike Miczo. Conway, a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash, brings added speed to the EUP backs, while Miczo (Northwestern High School) is likely to help the Plaid in a number of places on the offense. “Conway gives us another breakaway threat, while Miczo does so many things well, all around, that they both could see plenty of action throughout the year,” Szabo added. Another strength to the Edinboro offense this season will come from the right foot of All-American placekicker Jim Trueman. An Associated Press All-American the past two seasons, Trueman will cap off a brilliant EUP career this fall, as he embarks on the Pennsylvania Conference record books. Needing a fine 71 point output this season, Trueman would capture the all-time scoring mark in the PC for career points held by Millersville University runningback Ricky Stonewall. 13 1986 FIGHTING SCOTS returning LETTERMEN SCOUTING THE 1986 SCOTS PRESS BOX PHONE: 814-732-2749 R. Bulas registered 22 stops in limited play a year ago, while Lux was limited to kickoff coverage duty, but played excellent ball in the spring. In looking at the hnebacking situation for the ‘86 squad, Szabo will be relying on freshmen to come in and play for depth at the position. The Scots’ top recruit at linebacker this year will be Paul Sibila out of Massillon, OH. The 6'3", 207-pound product has caught the eye of the EUP coaching staff, turning in a 4.8 time m the 40, to go along with an outstanding 51.5 clocking in the 440. “He has a lot of pure athletic ability and this is what you’re looking for in any recruit. The conference is as tough as thought, and we are going to have to play all-around better football, both offensively and defensively, if we are going to have a shot at the conference crown. There are plenty of good teams in this division and we are going to have to be ready every Szabo stated. The Scot secondary could be the strength of this year s defense, led by veteran Martelle Betters, Claude Webb, Michael Churn and red-shirt freshman Mike Willis. Betters, an all-conference selection as a sophomore, returns for his senior campaign to anchor the Scot secondary. Betters was the squad’s ninth leading tackier last season, collecting 47 stops and 1 QB sack. The 6'0", 180-pound product out of Connellsville, PA, also broke up 4 passes and blocked 1 punt in 1985. A trio of talented youngsters are likely to make up remain er of the Plaid secondary in Webb, Churn and Wilhs. Web registered 17 stops a year ago, while picking off 1 pass in limited action while Churn and Willis are trying to shake off injuries from a year ago to land in the starting secondary. “We have a group of very talented players in our defensive backfield wit great speed and range. We should be stronger back there this season,’’ Szabo pointed out. “This is a throwing conference and you must stop the pass if you’re going to win. Senior quarterback Rich Popp is fully recovered from a throwing arm injury that hampered him all last season and ready to return to his sophomore season form that garnered him All-GLIAC honors. Also recovered from injuries are running backs Vic Chenault and L.C. Bulger. The receiver spots are nailed down, by returning starters Tom Badalamenti (23 receptions for 439 yar-ds) and Tim Jones. Up front the Tartars look strong with all five starters returning including all conference selection Tim Schramm. On defense eight starters return including outside linebacker Robert Magee and inside linebacker Mark Brown both all-conference in ‘85. Handling the specialist duties are senior placekicker Jerry McGowan, Wayne State’s all-time field goal kicker, and punt returner Keith Bennett, who finished number 12 in the NCAA II with a 10.4 yards per punt average. The most effective player in the Mounties offense should be three year starter Robert Funder burk (Sr., 5-8, 180) running behind the blocking of guard Rod Purcell (6-2,295). Top candidates for the quarterback job include junior Todd Smith (6-0, 185) and freshman Chris Fusco (6-1, 180). Defensively, the Mounties return three starters in the backfield, including free-safety Doug Westervalt (Sr., 6-0, 205), cornerback John Meyers (Sr., 6-0, 190), and linebacker Mike Beamish (Jr., 6-0, 225). The backfield will miss the play of Scott Holtzapple, while the defensive line will be hard-pressed to fill the void left by AllConference tackle Don Chubb, MU’s fall Athlete of the Year in 1985. They are favored to go all the way this year with 47 lettermen and 15 starters back for new coach Frank Cignetti. The former West Virginia mentor (1976-79) is returning to coaching after a seven-year absence. The big question will be who will start at quarterback in place of ECAC Player of the Year Rich Ingold, who passed for 2,760 yards and 23 touchdowns. Leading candidates are juniors Bob Kiel and Scott Rhodes. The receiving corps returns intact in split ends Tony Trave, 55 catches for 788 yards, Darel Patrick and tight end Doug Niesen. Tailback Pat McCullough and fullback Steve Girting will handle the running chores. AILECAC tackle Jim Angelo (6-4, 272) is a force on the offensive line. The 1986 Golden Eagles could be looking at a rebuilding season, since 5 All-Americans and 11 starters graduated from the 1985 squad. Offensively, Clarion will count on quarterback Doug Emminger (Jr., 5-10, 180), who started the final five games of 1985. His favorite returning target will be tight end Jim Hahn, (Sr., 6-0,215), who caught 35 passes for 736 yards and 1 TD last year. Tailback Mick Kehe(Jr., 5-9, 187), an All-Conference selection in 1985 when he ran for 460 yards and 4 TD’s in only 4 games, returns to lead the ground attack. Defensively, the Eagles will be looking to replace All-American noseguard John Hughes. Back from a “D” that led the PSAC-West in team defense last year is AllConference tackle Ken Edwards (Sr., 6-3, 265). Opening the holes for the backs will be a veteran offensive line led by senior captains Frank Pofer (6-1, 210) and Tom Rogers (6-3, 230). If Fairmont is to improve on last year’s 7-3 record and 16th ranking in the NAIA, they’ll have to rebuild the passing game. With the loss of NAIA All-American wide receiver Ed Coleman and tailback Brian Brown, sophomore quarterback Tom Morrone will be looking for new targets this year. Defensively, the Falcons appear solid, returning 8 starters from last year’s team. Wayne State standout quarterback Rich Popp caught the Scots off-guard as he rifled three first-half touchdown passes. Showing their stfong stamina in the uncomfortable heat and humidity, the Scots began their comeback late in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown plunge by fullback Jim Pisano. Pisano tacked on a nine-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and quarterback Scott Dodds completed a pass to tight end Scott Brown for the all-important two-point conversion. The Scots scored the tying touchdown with 3:35 left on a 19-pass reception by Dave Gierlak. Cleveland Pratt made a catch for the two-point conversion which deadlocked the opening contest. The Scots had an opportunity to pull off a stunning comeback when John Cardone intercepted a pass with less than a minute remaining, butthey ran out of time with the ball at the Wayne State 39. McCullough led the Big Indians rushing attack with 100 and 92 yards, respectively. Star quarterback Rich Ingold was held to 132 yards passing by the fired-up Edinboro defense which intercepted 3 passes, but he completed 15 of 25 aerials for 2 scores. The Scots came back to control the second half and took tbe lead for good on a 2-yard touchdown reception by tight end Bob Suren. CLARION 26 — EDINBORO 7 CLARION, PA - The Scots’ hopes for a Pennsylvania Con ference title were dashed as they were stopped by a strong Clarion squad in late October. Fullback Mick Kehoe ripped his way through the Scots, picking up 184 yards rushing on 30 carries. The Scots were held to 122 yards rushing and 122 yards passing. CALIFORNIA 14 - EDINBORO 9 EDINBORO, PA - The Scots suffered a disappointing loss to defending champ California in their conference opener before a Parents Day crowd of 5,500. Edinboro had little difficulty moving the sticks, as they racked up 20 first downs and totaled 200 yards rushing and 138 passing. But they were unable to dent the endzone until John Georgiana’s 2-yard touchdown run with 1:34 left in the game. After a scoreless first half, Edinboro took a 3-0 lead early in the third period on Jim Trueman’s 35-yard field goal. Two quick scores by California early in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning points. Edinboro’s inability to contain the Fairmont runners led to its downfall. Fairmont rolled up 316 yards rushing and ripped off a handful of long gainers to demoralize the Scots. Fairmont led 6-0 when Brian Brown scampered 72 yards on the second play from scrimmage. Fairmont scored 4 minutes later on a 2-yard touchdown run which was set up by gains of 24 and 33 yards to stun the Scots early with the 14-0 lead. Edinboro then settled down and began its comeback. A 19-yard touchdown scamper by wide receiver Dave Gierlak on a reverse put the Scots on the scoreboard late in the first period. Jim Trueman booted a 25-yard field goal with 7 seconds left in the first half, then Edinboro got the break it needed when it recovered a fumbled punt snap at the Fairmont 1 yard line late in the third quarter. John Georgiana’s touchdown plunge gave the Scots their first lead of the game. But Edinboro was unable to hold onto the lead as Brown scored the winning touchdown from 6 yards out in the fourth quarter at the 10:27 mark. The big play in Fairmont’s winning drive was a 46-yard run on a third-and-three from its own 42. Edinboro played for most of the game without star quarterback Scott Dodds, who was hobbled with an ankle injury. Edinboro struggled in the passing department, completing only 3 of 18 attempts. The East vs. West conference championship game, known as the “State Game,” has been in existence since 1960. Mythical champions were picked by sportswriters from 1934 until 1950 with the champion determined by the Saylor system from 1951 until 1959. All members of the conference (with individual sports exceptions) compete at the NCAA Division II level and have since 1980. Athletes and teams have won numerous honors in national competitions over the years and have helped the PSAC become one of the most respected “small college” conferences in the nation.
