WILLIAM CORNELL - MRS. RUTH PECK - MR. JAMES HARRISON ADVISORS President McNerney*s 1967 Welcome Message This year the Edinboro State College has an en rollment of 4,892 students on three campuses. By far the greater number, 4,350 are here at Edinboro and the remaining 542 are divided between the Shenango Valley Off-Campus Center located at Hickory Township High School and the Warren Area OffCampus Center at Warren. You will notice the new construction taking place on the campus. If you are seated on the permanent bleachers, to your right is the major dormitory building project. Two dormitories which will house four hundred students each will be completed by September 1968, two additional ones by September 1969, and two more by September 1970. As you came through the campus toward the stadium, you noticed the lake which is becoming a reality, the world cul tures building, and the new student infirmary build ing, all of which are ahead of construction schedule. During this school year, construction will begin on a maintenance building and the new dining hall. The completion of plans for the new field house - gym nasium and student union will be finalized during this school year also. By this time next year, to the north of the stadium, a new baseball stadium will appear as a reality. In addition to these projects, much renovation is occurring in the old buildings on campus and it is my hope that you will tour the buildings to observe this renovation. The faculty of the College now numbers 236 mem bers. It is a cosmopolitan group recruited mainly from the eastern part of the United States. The ma jor part of this faculty, new and old, are professors of advanced academic degrees earned at outstand ing American universities. In addition to the teach ing which they do with a high degree of excellence, the faculty also evaluates and develops the curric ulum of the College and it is interesting to observe the growth in the quantity and quality of faculty re search type activities. The incoming student body is of good quality. Its origins are basically in Northwestern Pennsylvania but a good sprinkling of students come from other parts of the Commonwealth, from other states, and there are representatives on the campus from sev eral foreign nations. It is interesting to note the growth of the resources available for teaching and learning. For example, the Hamilton Library which had a collection of 60,000 volumes when it was dedicated in 1962 now has 160,000 volumes. Also interesting to note is the ex panded use of “teaching tools” such as closed cir cuit television. You, the Alumni of the College, have always been generous in your support of the activities of the Col lege and I know that each of you and your friends will continue being active supporters of this, your Alma Mater. I welcome this opportunity to say “Hello” to each one of you. 5 — — Welcome Alumni Tony and John's Try Our Brand of ^^B.S.” — BETTER SERVICE — Barber Shop Edinboro Hotel Cocktail Lounge The College Book Store EDINBORO^S MOST COMPLETE STORE Greeting Cards ~ Gifts - Textbooks Paperbaeks - Cameras LARGEST ART DEPARTMENT IN NORTHWESTERN PA. 12 MEADVILLE STREET EDINBORO, PA. Following his graduation from Shaler High School, O’Dessa enrolled as an undergraduate at Edinboro State College in 1957 and completed his college ed ucation in 1961, at which time he received his B.S. degree. During his athletic career at his college alma mater, O’Dessa competed on the varsity football and track teams. He was elected captain of the football squad, earned a berth on the PSCAC Western Di vision All-Star Team, and awarded a Little AllAmerican Honorable Mention citation in his senior year. In addition, O’Dessa competed on the Gem City Bowl Game held in Erie, and was the recipient of the Sixth Annual Sox Harrison Outstanding Senior Athlete Award in 1961. Following his graduation from ESC, O’Dessa was named assistant line coach of the Highlander foot ball squad by Head Coach Loyal Park for the 19611962 seasons. The most recent addition to the Highlander coach ing staff is offensive backfield coach Jim Bowen. Bowen has been head football coach at Fairview High School in Fairview for the past 9 years and has compiled an outstanding record of 72 wins and 8 losses. His grid teams have captured 4 league championships while riding 25 and 19 game winning streaks. Coach Bowen is a 1957 graduate of Slippery Rock State College. He also attended Buffalo University where he earned his Master’s degree. He and his wife, Joyce, along with his 6 children, two of which are twin girls, reside in Fairview, Pa. JAMES BOWEN FRED CARO Fred Caro will commence his fifth season as head freshman grid coach this year. In addition he serves as chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department, head Highlander wrestling coach, and Assistant Professor of Physical Education. Caro received his B.S. degree from Lock Haven State College and his M.S. from Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts. Currently, Caro has compiled nine years of coach ing experience: three years at Tyrone Area High School as football, track, and wrestling coach; one year at Derry Area High School in the capacity of assistant football coach; one year as assistant foot ball coach at Williston Academy in Massachusetts; and four years as assistant grid coach at Edinboro. 8 — — ■ j | Head Coach William Catcher WILLIAM CUTCHER In March of 1966, William Cutcher accepted the position of head varsity coach at Edinboro State Col lege. Cutcher began his new duties as Highlander grid mentor at Edinboro during spring football practice, April 22-May 15, 1966. Prior to his appointment as head grid coach at Edinboro, Cutcher served as head football mentor at Central High School, Phoenix, Arizona. When he as sumed the head coaching berth at Central High in 1964, Cutcher inherited a team which finished the previous season with an 0-10 football record. During his first year as head coach at the school, his team recorded three victories and seven defeats. In 1965 during his second season as grid mentor, Cutcher’s team reversed their record to seven victories and only three defeats. Before serving as Central High’s grid mentor, Cutcher was varsity line coach at Persell High School, Cincinnati, Ohio. Under his direction, Persell was the Greater Cincinnati High School Champions for 1952, 1953, 1955, 1959, and 1960. In addition, he served nine years as head varsity basketball coach at Persell and head varsity track coach for seven years, 1952-1959. Cutcher’s high school football career record con tains 102 victories, 30 defeats and 6 ties. Cutcher competed in collegiate gridiron competi tion at the University of Dayton for four years on the varsity squad. In 1952 he participated in the “Salad Bowl” in Phoenix, Arizona, against the Uni versity of Houston, Texas. Cutcher graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. degree in physical education. He earned his M.Ed. degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, in 1958. Hard hit by the loss of many key personnel through academic ineligibilities and injuries. Coach Cutcher’s first grid season at Edinboro State College was marked with a disappointed 1-6-1 record. Team Trainer ................... Sports Information Director Equipment Manager........... Heading the pack is “Chico” Pollick, a 5’11”, 175-pound sophomore from Springdale, who appears to have the edge in the passing depart ment. Tom Mackey, a sophomore from Dormont, in jured his knee while piloting the frosh squad last sea son, but it is reported that he will return and be ready to go. Defensively, the Highlanders are spearheaded by 6’3”, 280-pound senior tackle, Steve Nishnik, and Jim Jaruszewicz, 5’11”, 200-pound linebacker. Ed Hol lins, 6’2”, 195 pounds, and Lee Maitland, 6’0”, 195 pounds, will team up at the defensive end positions. Battle-tested senior Bob Koleno will be the key man in the deep secondary. The addition of several promising junior college prospects could prove to be a key factor in solving some of the offensive problems. Among these are 5’11”, 210-pound halfback-quarter back, A1 Barbati; 6’0”, 290-pound guard, Paul Belosh; and 5’11”, 205-pound halfback, Ben Haberman. Another plus factor is Coach Cutcher’s plans for a two-platoon system, an offensive and defensive unit. This will take the pressure off those players who were forced to go both ways last season because of the squads numerous injuries and lack of adequate personnel. Head football coach Bill Cutcher is optimistic about his second season at the helm of the Highland ers because he has a good nucleus of young, eager, and aggressive ballplayers. The success of Edinboro’s 1967 gridiron campaign relies heavily on how quickly prospects from last year’s fine freshman crop can fill gaps in key positions on the varsity club. On the basis of spring practice, the ’67 edition of Highlander hopefuls should have more speed, quickness, and over-all depth. The squad is young as far as class rank is concerned but is studded with “seasoned” ballplayers and veteran performers. The offensive unit will be bolstered by the return of John Mikovich, 5’9”, 195-pound hard-running junior halfback who missed action last season. Sophomores John Guerrasio, 5’11”, 205 pounds, and “Smokey” Santillo, 5’10”, 185 pounds, are expected to battle for the other halfback slot. Both have excellent speed. Bob Grief, 5’11”, 205-pound senior should ward off all competition at the fullback spot. Leading the list of offensive linemen are seniors Dave Brandel, 6’2”, 230 pounds; Dan Bissontz, 6’1”, 216 pounds; and junior John Ballard, 6’3”, 227 pounds. Biggest worry is Mike Malone’s replacement at the quarterback slot. An outstanding guard for Rhode Island University, he made the All Yankee Conference first team in both his junior and senior year, and was chosen Little-All-American his senior year. DiSpirito has been coaching since 1953, and moved into college coaching in 1958. In 1960 he became head coach at the University of Bridgeport, and in five years as head coach had four winning seasons. After his stay at Bridgeport, DiSpirito was first assistant at Bucknell for two years. Besides his high school and college coaching experience, the new Rocket coach served as head coach for his regimental team at Ft. Dix, N.J., from 1954 to 1956. Pasquale played under DiSpirito at Bridgeport and impressed the new Rocket coach as being a “heady” or thinking ballplayer. Pasquale has rejoined Di Spirito and serves as defensive backfield coach and defensive co-ordinator. STAN KONDRACKI Line Coach Stan was an outstanding football and baseball player at Denison University. He captained both the football and baseball teams at Denison in 1964 and was chosen most valuable player in both sports. Kondracki came to Slippery Rock in 1965 as a graduate assistant and head freshman coach. In 1966 he moved up to the varsity as offensive line coach where he will also coach this year. ROD OBERLIN Backfield Coach Oberlin, offensive backfield coach and offensive co ordinator, is another new face on the Rocket coach ing staff. Rod lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Hillsdale College, Michigan. He quarterbacked Hillsdale’s 1949 undefeated football team. After graduation from Hillsdale, Oberlin played several years of professional baseball in the Cleve land Indian organization. He began coaching in 1953 and moved to Bucknell in 1956, where he served as head baseball and assistant football coach for eleven years. Oberlin is considered to be a top specialist at developing football talent. He will instruct on the Health and Physical Education staff. DOUGLAS CLINGER Freshman Coach A native of Oil City, Clinger was an outstanding football player for the Oilers. Doug is a Slippery Rock alumnus and served as team trainer in foot ball and track. Before coming back to Slippery Rock last year as freshman coach, Doug coached at Grove City High and Northwestern High. He also put in a stint as an assistant coach at Arizona State Univer sity. — 23 — SLIPPERY ROCK STATE COLLEGE Slippery Rock Football Outlook VARSITY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Sept. Sept. Sept. Oct. Oct.
